She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic---and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. If you have the wish and really make a conscious (自觉的) effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you. Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before. Memory “tricks” work the other way as well. Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber(理发师) shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office. We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones. Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “tricks” of our memory can cause us great trouble. 46. If we want to have a good memory, _______. A. we should force ourselves to remember things B. we should make a conscious effort of practice and exercise C. we should never stop learning D. we should try hard to remember things 47. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. One night the writer forgot to lock the front door. B. One night the writer forgot having locked the front door. C. The writer remembered to lock the door. D The writer remembered unlocking the front door. 48. From the underlined sentence, we can infer that _______. A. we enjoy hearing new stories about absent-mindedness of professors B. we don’t want to know anything more about absent-mindedness of professors C. we will never get tired of listening to new stories about absent-mindedness D. absent-mindedness happens not only to professors but to many other people 49. In the passage, the writer seems to tell us _______. A. forgetting things is serious and dangerous B. always forgetting things is understandable C. forgetting things at times is natural D. the way to protect yourself from memory “tricks” 50. The best title for this passage is _______. A. How to Get a Good Memory B. “Tricks” of Memory C. Forgetfulness and Absent-mindedness is Dangerous D. Get Rid of Absent-mindedness 【答案】46. B 47. A 48. D 49. C 50. 根据第一段中“Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious (自觉的) effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things.(他们说,记忆是一个关于练习和实践的问题。如果你有这个愿望,并真正有意识地努力,那么你可以很容易地提高你的记忆能力)”可知,如果我们想有一个好的记忆力,我们应该有意识地努力练习和锻炼。故选B。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.(例如,上周的一天早上,我起床后发现我整晚都没锁前门,但我清楚地记得前一晚我小心地锁上了前门)”可知,一天晚上,作者忘记锁门了。故选A。 根据最后一段中“We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years”可知,我们似乎总能在人们的健忘或心不在焉引起的事件中找到一些有趣的东西,并且关于心不在焉的教授的故事已经讲了很多年了,我们从来没有厌倦听新教授的故事,说明心不在焉不仅发生在教授身上,而且发生在许多其他人身上。 根据最后一段中“We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones.(我们似乎总能在人们的健忘或心不在焉引起的事件中找到一些有趣的东西。关于心不在焉的教授的故事已经讲了很多年了,我们永远不会厌倦新的故事)”可知,忘记事情是很正常的,也是经常会发生的。故选C。 【50题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.(但即使你成功了,有时你的记忆似乎也会捉弄你)”根据最后一段“Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “tricks” of our memory can cause us great trouble.”(有时候,我们的记忆“把戏”会给我们带来很大的麻烦)结合本文主要讲述的就是记忆在很多情况下出错的话题,B选项“记忆的‘诡计’”最符合文章标题。故选B。 D Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle (挣扎,奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges (挑战) of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly. When people are young, meeting and overcoming (克服) challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives. Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them. 51. From the story we know that the butterfly can’t fly because ________. A. the man feels sorry for it B. the man helps it come out C. it gets out by itself D. it tries to challenge itself 52. Dennis’s example shows that successful people should ________. A. take up business early B. sell clothes from door to door C. overcome the difficulties D. become the leaders of tomorrow 53. The meaning of the underlined word “mature” in the passage is “________”. A. take up B. get up C. wake up D. grow up 54. What is the writer trying to do in the passage? A. Encourage young people to face challenges. B. Suggest how to become a successful businessman. C. Explain what will happen if a person fails the exam. D. Describe where a butterfly comes from. 55. What is the best title for this passage? A. Successful People Have a Sense of Achievement B. Young People Must Develop Their Energy Actively C. Countries Should Continue to Become Successful D. Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People 【答案】51. B 52. C 53. D 54. A 55. 根据第一段中“He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn’t struggle (挣扎,奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can’t fly!(他剪开了蛹,蝴蝶很容易就出来了。令人惊讶的是,蝴蝶不会飞。如果蝴蝶不挣扎着离开蛹,它就不能飞!)”可知,蝴蝶不能飞是因为男人帮助它从蛹里出来,没有经历挣扎的过程。故选B。 【52题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.(另一个成功的人是丹尼斯。他父亲在他二十岁的时候就去世了。父亲的死迫使他迅速成熟起来。他不得不养活一个九口之家。他接受挑战并克服了它们。今天,他的兄弟姐妹们都过着成功的生活)”可知,Dennis接受了挑战并克服了它们,由此可推测,Dennis的例子说明成功人士应该要克服困难。故选C。 【53题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“His father died when he was only twenty. His father’s death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people.(他父亲在他二十岁的时候就去世了。父亲的死迫使他迅速mature起来。他不得不养活一个九口之家)”可知,父亲去世后,他需要承担起养家的责任,所以这里mature意思是“成长,成熟”,与“grow up”意思相近。故选D。 【54题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges.(所以一些家长和老师积极鼓励年轻人面对挑战)”以及全文内容可知,作者写这篇文章是为了鼓励年轻人面对挑战。故选A。 因此,最佳标题是“Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People(生活中的挑战激发年轻人的潜能)”。 Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车). They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plate contraptions many miles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them. Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地携带) groceries around in baskets they had to carry. One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business. On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention. But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try. After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts. “Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied. But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的) customers. As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before. Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart. 56. The underlined words “chrome-plate contraptions” in Paragraph 1 refer to ______. (No more than 3 words) __________________ 57. What was the purpose of Goldman’s invention? (No more than 10 words) __________________ 58. Why was Goldman disappointed at first? (No more than 10 words) __________________ 59. Why did Goldman hire people to push carts around his market?(No more than 10 words) __________________ 60. What do you think of Goldman? Please give your reasons. (No more than 20 words) __________________ 【答案】56. Shopping carts. 57. It was to make shopping easier and attract more business. 58. Because few customers used his carts. 59. Because he wanted to promote his shopping carts. 60. He was a smart businessman. He invented the shopping cart and made it accepted by customers. Or: He was smart but he shouldn’t have used tricks to attract customers. 分析可知,“the”表示特指,第二次提及,因此结合语境可知,划线“the chrome-plate contraptions”应是指前文“a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(在购物车后面的他或她生活的一部分)”中的“a shopping cart(购物手推车)”,与划线短语在名词复数上保持一致,应是复数形式。 根据文章第三段内容“One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.(有一天,Goldman突然有了把篮子装在轮子上的想法。带轮子的购物篮会让他的顾客更容易购物,并有助于吸引更多的生意。)”可知,他的想法是给购物篮装上轮子,这样做的目的是让顾客更容易购物,并有助于吸引更多的生意。故答案为:It was to make shopping easier and attract more business. 根据文章第五段内容“Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.(大多数购物者都花了很长时间看这些手推车,但几乎没有人愿意试一试。)” Because few customers used his carts. 根据文章第七段内容“He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony customers.(他知道,只要他能说服人们试一试,他的手推车就会大获成功。为此,Goldman雇佣了一群人在他的市场上推着手推车,假装他们在购物!看到这一点,真正的客户逐渐开始模仿假冒客户。)”可知,他想要人们尝试使用手推车购物,于是他雇佣人推着手推车假装在购物,这样,真正的顾客就开始效仿使用手推车购物了。由此可推知,他雇佣人是因为要推广购物手推车的使用,以鼓励人们尝试使用。故答案为:Because he wanted to promote his shopping carts. 根据文章第二段末尾内容“Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry.(每天,他都会看到购物者用篮子拖着食品杂货四处走动。)以及第三段内容 One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.(有一天,Goldman突然有了把篮子装在轮子上的想法。带轮子的购物篮会让他的顾客更容易购物,并有助于吸引更多的生意。)”可知,Goldman通过观察顾客购物的行为想到有轮子的购物篮可以方便购物,而且可以吸引更多的生意,说明他是一个聪明的生意人,且文章第七段提及“To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony customers.(为此,Goldman雇佣了一群人在他的市场上推着手推车,假装他们在购物!看到这一点,真正的客户逐渐开始模仿假冒客户。)”他通过“推广宣传”购物车使得真正的顾客开始使用并接受购物车购物的方式。同样可以说明他是一个聪明的生意人。故答案为:He was a smart businessman. He invented the shopping cart and made it accepted by customers. 100。 Dear Mr Wang, How time flies! I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 81. Our home was a complete zoo---a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree! I am not special, just single-minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember;little steps add up to big dreams. 41. When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be____. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Caring and determined. B. Honest and responsible. C. Ambitious and sensitive. D. Innocent and single-minded. C Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise. A One night the writer forgot to lock the front door. B. One night the writer forgot having locked the front door. C. The writer remembered to lock the door. D. The writer remembered unlocking the front door. Get Rid of Absent-mindedness D Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. A the man feels sorry for it B. the man helps it come out C. it gets out by itself D. it tries to challenge itself 52. Challenges of Life Bring Out the Best in Young People Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(购物手推车).
