二、阅读理解(共3篇,每篇5小题,每题2分,满分30分)
Passage A
Sixty years ago, Saihanba was a wide sandy wasteland with almost no tall trees. Strong sandstorms hit this area all year round. Local farmers could only grow little corn on poor soil, and their daily lives were extremely hard. In 1962, with full support from the local government, a group of young forest workers moved to this cold barren land. They made up their minds to plant trees to hold soil and stop terrible sandstorms.
At the very beginning, most young saplings died because of freezing winters and thin sandy earth. But the workers never gave up their long-term goal. Year after year, they kept planting bushes and different kinds of trees. Up till now, millions of trees have been grown here, forming the world’s largest man-made forest.
Now Saihanba looks totally different. Heavy sandstorms have almost disappeared. Large areas of fruit crops grow well on rich soil. Every year hundreds of tourists come to visit the forest park, and local villagers sell handmade crafts and fresh fruits to visitors. Many young people who once left for big cities have returned to run small local businesses. People all call this amazing environmental change a miracle created by sixty years of hard work.

A. It was covered with thick green woods.
B. It was a large sandy wasteland with few trees.
C. It had many fruit farms for local villagers.
D. It had a popular tourist forest park.
2. Why did groups of young workers move to Saihanba in 1962?

A. terrible natural disaster

C. common daily trouble
D. difficult long-time job

B. Lots of young villagers come back to start businesses.
C. Millions of trees have been planted on the wasteland.
D. Farmers still cannot grow any fruit crops on the land.
5. What is the main idea of this article?
A. The huge environmental and living changes in Saihanba after 60 years’ hard work.
B. Detailed steps of planting trees on cold sandy land.
C. Different kinds of fruits grown in Saihanba forest farms.
D. Travel rules and ticket standards of Saihanba park.
Passage B
The 480-kilometer Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway was put into service in 2017 with China’s technical and financial support. Before this new railway appeared, local people could only choose old slow trains or rough muddy dirt roads. It took nearly ten hours to travel from Mombasa Port to Nairobi, the country’s capital city.
Since the railway opened to passengers, great positive changes have taken place across Kenya. The travel time between the two cities is cut down to only about four hours. Local businessmen can send fruits, grains and daily goods by train with much lower transport costs. More foreign tourists take the railway to visit wild animal reserves, so local hotels and souvenir shops gain more customers every year.
Local government officials interviewed by newspapers said small towns along the railway have developed rapidly over the past nine years. Many young people can find stable work in transport, tourism and agricultural trade. This railway not only shortens travel hours but also greatly improves ordinary Kenyan people’s living standards.
1. When did the Mombasa-Nairobi railway start to work?
A. In 1901 B. In 2017 C. Sixty years ago D. Last spring
2. How long did the trip between the two cities take on old transport?
A. About four hours B. Half an hour C. Almost ten hours D. One whole day
3. What good influence does the railway bring to local businessmen?
A. They don’t need to sell farm products.
B. Their transportation costs become much cheaper.
C. They can travel to China for free.
D. They build large factories beside the railway stations.
4. We can infer from the text that ____.
A. No young people can find jobs near the railway
B. Tourism develops better because of the railway
C. Old trains are still more popular among travelers
D. Local citizens seldom take trains for daily trips
5. The word “capital” in the passage refers to ____.
A. big port city B. countryside village
C. national central city D. farmland area
Passage C
Three years have passed since I became a Grade Nine student, and every side of my daily life has gone through obvious shifts. When I studied in primary school six years ago, my parents walked me to school every single morning without exception. Our family lived in a narrow two-room flat with no independent study space for me. At that time, our home network was extremely slow, so I could hardly take any online courses or watch educational learning materials after school. I seldom joined group discussions at that time because I was too shy to share my ideas with classmates.
Now everything has turned completely different. My family has moved into a spacious new apartment with a private study room just for me. I take the school bus with my deskmates every weekday morning. Our family has installed high-speed fiber Internet, so I can watch high-quality teaching videos and finish online exercise tasks smoothly after finishing in-class homework. I actively take part in all group discussion activities at school. Through communicating with partners, I can fix many weak knowledge points that I cannot figure out by myself.
Besides study and housing, my social life also changes a lot. I used to only play indoor games at weekends, but now I often take part in outdoor volunteer activities in the community, such as tree-planting and waste sorting promotion. However, one warm tradition never shifts no matter how many changes happen in our daily life: my whole family will sit together and chat about our daily gains and troubles after dinner every evening.
