Passage A

Sixty years ago, Saihanba was a wide sandy wasteland with almost no tall trees. Strong sandstorms hit this area all year round. Local farmers could only grow little corn on poor soil, and their daily lives were extremely hard. In 1962, with full support from the local government, a group of young forest workers moved to this cold barren land. They made up their minds to plant trees to hold soil and stop terrible sandstorms.

At the very beginning, most young saplings died because of freezing winters and thin sandy earth. But the workers never gave up their long-term goal. Year after year, they kept planting bushes and different kinds of trees. Up till now, millions of trees have been grown here, forming the world’s largest man-made forest.

Now Saihanba looks totally different. Heavy sandstorms have almost disappeared. Large areas of fruit crops grow well on rich soil.
