The Lantern Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar (阴历的) month. It dates back over 2,000 years. There are many stories about how it came into being. Here is one of them.
A long time ago, a beautiful crane (a large bird with long legs and a long neck) flew from heaven (天堂) to earth. The villagers thought it was dangerous, so they killed it. When the Jade Emperor, Master of Heaven and Earth, learned that his favourite crane was killed, he decided to set fire to their village on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.
