四、阅读理解(每题2分,共10分)
When sixteen-year-old Maya first joined the Humour Team at Riverside Children's Hospital, she assumed that making young patients laugh would be the easiest part of volunteering. She could tell a few jokes, perform a simple trick and leave the room feeling useful. During training, however, the programme director, Dr Chen, challenged that assumption. “A joke is not helpful simply because it is funny,” she explained. “You must first read the room.”
To do that, volunteers learned to notice small signals: whether a child wanted company, whether a parent looked exhausted, and whether silence might be kinder than another cheerful voice. They also had to ask permission before beginning. The aim was not to produce laughter on demand but to offer patients a moment of choice in a place where much of their day was controlled by appointments and treatment. In this sense, humour was an invitation rather than a command.
Maya understood the lesson when she met Oliver, a ten-year-old boy waiting for an operation. He turned away when she introduced herself and said he hated clowns. Instead of trying harder, Maya put away her red nose and sat quietly near the door. A few minutes later, Oliver noticed the toy penguin in her pocket and asked why it was wearing a tiny bandage. Maya replied that the penguin had injured itself while attempting to fly. Oliver did not laugh, but he began to talk. The next morning he asked whether the “flying patient” had recovered. Their exchange, which lasted less than five minutes, gave him something familiar to return to.
Hospital researchers later compared patients who received short Humour Team visits with those who followed the usual routine. The first group reported less anxiety immediately before some procedures, although the difference did not last in every case. Dr Chen welcomed the result but warned volunteers not to exaggerate it. Humour cannot replace medicine, professional counselling or honest information. Its value, she argued, lies elsewhere: when used with sensitivity, it can restore a little control, create human connection and make a difficult experience feel more manageable.
19. What did Maya assume before her training?
A. Hospital volunteering required medical knowledge.
B. Making young patients laugh would be straightforward.
C. Most patients preferred tricks to conversation.
D. Volunteers should follow the same routine in every room.
20. Why were volunteers taught to “read the room”?
A. To discover which jokes were most popular.
B. To report the patients' condition to doctors.
C. To choose a response suited to each patient's feelings.
D. To complete their visits within a limited time.
21. What does the phrase “an invitation rather than a command” suggest?
A. Humour should be included in hospital rules.
B. Patients should remain free to accept or refuse humour.
C. Volunteers need to speak in a polite and formal way.
D. Laughter is more effective when patients expect it.
22. What can be inferred from Maya's meeting with Oliver?
A. A successful joke can remove a patient's fear completely.
B. Children are more willing to talk about toys than treatment.
C. Respecting a patient's reluctance can help build connection.
D. Silent company is always more useful than cheerful conversation.
23. Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. Hospital volunteers should receive the same training as doctors.
B. Research has proved that humour offers lasting medical benefits.
C. Helpful hospital humour depends on sensitivity and supports, rather than replaces, care.
D. Young patients recover faster when they are given more control.

Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) was a British actor and filmmaker, who became a worldwide icon during the silent-film era. His most famous character was the Tramp, whose small moustache, bowler hat and funny walk are instantly recognisable. Chaplin used physical comedy to make audiences laugh, but his films also showed sympathy for ordinary people. Modern Times, which presents the pressures of factory life, is my favourite work. In my view, Chaplin deserves admiration because he combined humour with serious social messages. His films still entertain people today, which proves that great humour can cross time and culture.
