Do you remember the Flaming Mountains (火焰山) from “Journey to the West”? Do you know where the real Flaming Mountains are? They are in Turpan, in the east of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (维吾尔自治区).
It’s known as one of the hottest areas in the world. The desert sand can be as hot as 80 ℃ in summer. That’s hot enough to make your feet burn! It may sound crazy, but the local people can cook an egg on the desert sand. Rainfall in Turpan is only 16 mm a year. It is one of the driest places in China. How do people live in such a terrible climate? The answer lies in the ancient Karez system (坎儿井水利系统).
The Karez system in Turpan includes more than 1,000 wells. They appear every 20-30 meters. Some of them are 100 meters deep! Under these wells are large underground canals (运河). Water from the mountains falls into the wells. It then runs underground in the canals. Even though it is hot in the desert, the water keeps cool in the canals. There are over 5,000 km of underground canals in the area. That’s nearly as long as the Yellow River! Thanks to the Karez system, people can grow plants for food in this area. And amazingly, all the Karez system was finished with only hand tools. No wonder it’s one of the most famous projects in ancient China.
Today, Turpan faces water problems. There is less water from the mountains and less rainfall. Although modern technology is helping to solve some of the problems, the Karez system still plays an important role. Now, more and more young people are taking action to protect it. The old water system will surely last for a longer time.
19.What do the numbers show in Paragraph 2?
A.People can’t live in Turpan, China.
B.The desert sand can be used to cook food.
C.The real Flaming Mountains are hot and dry.
D.The desert in Turpan is the biggest one in China.
20.Which of the following words can be put into ________ in the picture of the Karez system?
A.river B.canal C.sand D.rainfall
21.Which of the following meanings fits the underlined word “wells” in Paragraph 3?
well /wel/
A. (adv.) in a good, right way
e.g. They played well in the game.
B. (adj.) in good health
e.g. I don’t feel very well today.
C. (exclamation) used to show you accept and agree to something
e.g. Well, I think I could meet you at 3 o’clock.
D. (n.) a deep hole in the ground from which people can get water
e.g. We get water from the well outside the door.
22.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Who can live in Turpan. B.Where the Flaming Mountains are.

The world has lost a great scientist — Dr. Jane Goodall passed away on October 1.
In 1960, Goodall went to Gombe National Park in Tanzania to study chimpanzees. What she discovered there forever changed science. She found chimpanzees are not vegetarians and live in groups. She also watched them use sticks as tools to catch termites (白蚁). It proved humans are not the only tool users. She discovered chimpanzees had different personalities, too. Some were kind, but some were tough, and many were both.
But Goodall didn’t just make new discoveries. She became a bridge between humans and nature. Although she loved her life in the forest, she left Gombe in the 1980s. Forests were cut down fast, and hunters killed chimpanzees for trade. Goodall realized that studying animals alone was not enough to protect them. She traveled around the world — almost until the last day of her life — sharing her experiences and hoping to make a difference.
Goodall also inspired (激励) young people. In 1991, she set up the Roots & Shoots movement. Today, this youth-action program runs in more than 60 countries. Under Goodall’s influence, millions of students have taken on the challenge of making the world a better place for humans, other animals and the environment we share.
Throughout her life, Goodall carried a message of hope. She believed that hope gives people the strength to act and care for the Earth. Though her work has ended, her love for all living things will continue to inspire.

A.They only ate plants and fruits. B.They were all kind to each other.
C.They could use tools and show personalities. D.They lived alone and liked to fight.

25.Which word can best describe Jane Goodall?
A.Humorous. B.Hopeful. C.Modest. D.Quiet.
26.What is the main purpose of this passage?
A.To tell a story about a national park.
B.To invite young people to join a program.
C.To introduce a great scientist’s life and work.
D.To describe the life of chimpanzees in forests.

Fashion psychologists say colors can influence our feelings. For example, yellow is often linked with happiness, while blue can bring calmness.
