Here are some great destinations to get a fi x on dragon. France Calais in France has a dragon standing 33 feet tall, 82 feet long, with a wingspan of more than 55 feet. It walks and moves as you would imagine a dragon does, and you can take it for a ride. The Calais dragon is a mechanical wonder, which is nearly too real to be called a fairground creature. Wales In the UK, you will find a proud dragon country, Wales. Here there is the legend of two dragons: one white and one red. Wales’ tale describes the two dragons fighting and the red one winning, so you will find it difficult to hurry about the country without coming across a red dragon. Dragons are sold in souvenir shops, sit by ancient castles, hang around in King Arthur’s Labyrinth, and are featured on the national flag. Norway The Vikings knew a thing or two about dragons. In the lovely film How to Train Your Dragon, they even flew them. But seriously, when you dig into Norway’s Viking history and legends, you will find dragons mentioned everywhere, though not as cute as those in the film. From the figurehead in the Viking Ship Museum to jewelry, and decorations on buildings, be on the lookout for them when visiting Norway. Bhutan The Druk or Thunder Dragon, is the national symbol and appears everywhere. The country is called Land of the Thunder Dragon, or Kingdom of Druk, and it’s part of the national anthem (国歌) and its flag. Despite its fearful name, it’s actually rather cute. The legend has it that the sound of thunder through the mountain s is actually the dragon roaring. 21. What can we learn about the Calais dragon? A. It’s a character from a popular film. B. It’s a creation designed for entertainment. C. It’s a real creature trained for rides. D. It’s a sculpture displayed in a museum. 22. What do Wales and Bhutan have in common on dragons? A. They feature dragons on their flags. B. They include dragons in their anthems. C. They have a legend of two dragons. D. They describe dragons as cute images. 23. Which country associates dragons with a natural phenomenon? A. France. B. Wales. C. Norway. D. Bhutan. B If you love art then, “Picasso” is going to speak a lot. Modern art is a result of Picasso’s work and he stands as a legendary figure in its birth. Pablo Picasso was born in Madrid on October 25, 1881. Picasso wasn’t just a painter of his time, he was an exceptional painter and his expertise didn’t just stop there. He was a sculptor, printmaker and stage designer. Due to his amazing skills and talent, he became an outstanding figure in all of these fields. Picasso received training from his father who himself was an art teacher and a painter as well. Just at the age of 16, Picasso had already lost a liking to traditional art techniques and he desired to introduce something new. He began to experiment with different styles of art. Most of his life was spent in Paris, which was a city to be in if you were an artist in the early 20th century. During his stay in Paris, he became friends with Guillaume Apollinaire, Georges Braque, and Max Jacob. All of them were influential artists and writers of the time and they quickly became close friends. With time, Picasso’s style continued to evolve. He explored different grounds like still life, portraits, mythological scenes, and landscapes. His work was bold and he always preferred to use innovative perspective. Picasso also excelled in other forms of art. He also produced sculptures, and collages, and even took an interest in theatrical productions. His most famous work was “Guernica”, a typical example of cubist (立体主义的) style. He produced this in response to the Spanish Civil War when the town of Guernica suffered a horrifying bombing. To this day, his work is an iconic representation of war horrors. On April 8, 1973, Picasso passed away in the city of Mougins, France. He left behind a legacy of art that is celebrated still to this day. 24. Which of the following best describes Picasso? A. Gifted. B. Energetic. C. Greedy. D. Efficient. 25. What can be inferred about Picasso’s early life and education? A. He had no interest in art. B. He spent his entire life in Spain. C. He preferred traditional art techniques. D. He was trained by his father, an art teacher. 26. Which city played the most crucial role in Picasso’s artistic development and why? A. Madrid, because it was his birthplace. B. Paris, because it was a center for artists in the early 20th century. C. Mougins, because it was where he passed away. D. Guernica, because it inspired his most famous work. 27. What is a suitable title for the text? A. The Life of a Spanish Actor: Picasso’s Journey B. Picasso: A Revolutionary Artist in Modern Art C. From Traditional to Cubist: Picasso’s Artistic Evolution D. Paris and Picasso: The City that Shaped an Artist C Native to southwest China, pandas are famous for their love of bamboo, spending up to 16hours a day consuming this fast-growing plant. Pandas have puzzled biologists for decades with their bamboo-only diet. Despite having digestive systems typical of meat-consuming animals, pandas have adapted to a diet that is almost entirely plant-based. A recent study published in the journal Frontiers by researchers from China West Normal University demonstrates how this is possible. The study reveals that bamboo contains microRNA (miRNA), a genetic material that pandas absorb into their bloodstream. This miRNA plays a crucial role in regulating gene expression, influencing pandas’ growth, behavior and immune (免疫) responses. Dr. Li Feng, a senior author of the study, explains in a statement that miRNA also affects pandas’ sense of smell, taste, and dopamine (多巴胺) pathways, all of which are closely linked to their feeding habits. The researchers believe that by the time a baby panda grows up,it will develop the ability to pick the freshest and most nutritious bamboo, which enables them to adapt to a plant-based diet. The research team analyzed blood samples from six pandas, identifying 57 kinds of miRNAs likely coming from bamboo. These findings suggest that miRNA is key to pandas’ adaptation to their unique diet. The study also highlights the potential broader implications of this discovery. By understanding how plant miRNA affects animals, scientists may be able to develop new treatments or preventive measures for diseases. The panda’s diet consists almost entirely of bamboo leaves, stems and shoots. And only about 1% of their food comes from other plants, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This research not only deepens our understanding of pandas but also opens new ways for exploring the interactions between plant and animal biology. 28. What aspect of pandas is focused on in the research? A. Physical growth. B. Social behavior. C. Hunting strategies. D. Genetic adaptation. 29. How do pandas adapt to their plant-based diet over time? A. By learning to select bamboo. B. By increasing their consumption. C. By reducing their reliance on plants. D. By developing stronger digestive systems. 30. What may be the positive impact of the finding in the future? A. Increasing the panda population. B. Developing new medical treatments. C. Changing pandas’ digestive systems. D. Improving bamboo planting techniques. 31. What is the author’s attitude towards the outcome of the study? A. Curious. B. Critical. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful. D The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) spends a lot of its time staring at nothing. The shots of deep space this produces are remarkably beautiful, transforming an apparently empty sky into a field dotted with thousands of distant galaxies. The first surveys of the early universe have surprised astronomers, as the galaxies seem brighter than expected, with more star formation and larger black holes. Yet maybe we shouldn’t have been too startled to find the universe surprising us: it has been doing so since we first peered into the cosmic darkness. The most famous image of the early universe is the Hubble Deep Field captured in 1995. Yet this shot was almost never taken. Time on the Hubble Space Telescope is precious and astronomers spend months preparing proposals to try to get access. The process is a bit odd — often requiring researchers to argue simultaneously that the proposed observations would transform astronomy, but also that we know exactly what they will show. There are normally seven or eight times as many proposals as can be accepted, so risky observations have trouble getting through. Back in the 1990s, many renowned astronomers argued that directing Hubble at deep space was pointless, betting that the space telescope wouldn’t find a single new galaxy. They assumed that the galaxies we see around us today are representative of those throughout the past 14 billion years or so, a pessimistic outlook we now know is badly wrong. Finding the early universe lit up with firework displays of star formation was a fortuitous discovery. But once you start looking, you will find that astronomical history is filled with discoveries made by accident, or while scientists were looking for something else entirely. The team behind NASA’s Cassini probe was focused on its mission to explore Saturn’s famous rings and its mysterious moon Titan when an unexpected encounter with the tiny moon Enceladus revealed fountains of water coming from its south pole. It is now perhaps the most likely place for us to find life beyond Earth. These discoveries are all a long way from how science is taught, where careful experiment and testing of hypotheses lead to progress. Surprise is fun, so maybe we should embrace serendipity a little more. Some astronomers involved in reviewing this year’s JWST observations have suggested it would be fairer, and easier, to allocate time on the telescope by lottery, acknowledging that with so many good ideas floating around, we can’t possibly choose between them. But whether it is staring into deep space or exploring the solar system, experience has taught us that preparing to be surprised by the universe is the best way to make new discoveries. 32. What can be inferred about JWST? A. It functions from time to time. B. It renews our knowledge of deep space. C. It surprises people more than Hubble does. D. It confirms previous assumptions of the universe. 33. What does the writer think of the Hubble Space Telescope’s proposal process? A. It fails to leave much room for flexibility. B. It favors proposals by renowned scientists. C. It leads to pessimistic views of the universe. D. It ensures the most promising ideas get through. 34. What does the underlined word “fortuitous” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Groundbreaking. B. Effortless. C. Chance. D. Plain. 35. What does the author mainly do in this passage? A. Introduce space history. B. Examine a discovery. C. Balance opposing views. D. Encourage a mindset. We are faced with increasing pressure to make sensible decisions about every aspect of our lives — from choosing the healthiest breakfast option to finding a school or university to attend. Make the correct choice and you can give yourself a pat on the back. ____36____ Psychologists have found that people’s approaches to decision-making tend to fit into one of two categories. You are either a maximiser — a person who strives to make a choice that will give them the maximum benefit later on — or a satisfier, whose choices are determined by more modest criteria and nothing more. Given that maximisers task themselves with making the most informed, intelligent decisions, we might expect that the outcome of their approach would be superior. This assumption, however, has been contradicted by numerous studies. Studies have found that maximisers are often less effective in a decision-making environment. They tend to exhaust all options in search of the perfect choice.____37____ Setting unachievable goals may itself get in the way of making good decisions. ____38____ The abundance of alternatives can overwhelm even the most diligent decision-makers. In The Paradox of Choice, U.S. psychologist Barry Schwartz looked at the proliferation (激增) of choices that are available to us in our everyday lives. He found that an increased range of options does not necessarily lead to higher satisfaction with the outcome of a decision.____39____ Maximisers tend to experience a sense of “buyer’s regret” following a decision, doubting whether it was correct, and imagining how life would have been had they chosen a different path.____40____ While a maximising approach might seem an optimal approach to decision-making, our energy may be better spent satisficing and appreciating what we have, rather than what we might have had. A. Make a bad decision and you can be left with feelings of regret. B. We are often overwhelmed by the abundance of choices we face. C. A satisficer is usually much more efficient and mentally less burdened. D. This problem is especially pronounced in a world where options seem endless. E. By contrast, a satisficer accepts his choice as good enough, even if it’s not the best. F. In other words, maximisers struggle to stop searching despite a good enough option. G. If anything, choice may in fact limit our ability to enjoy and appreciate what we have. You might be leaving some happiness on the table by doing your everyday activities all by yourself. A new study has found that almost any activity becomes more ____41____ when done with others. The ____42____ of another person makes life’s routines a little brighter. Generally, the effect was ____44____, holding true across data collected over several years (2010, 2012, 2013, and 2021). The only exception came in 2021, when doing food-related chores with others appeared to ____45____ moods. Unsurprisingly, in this respect, the biggest boosts were linked to activities ____46____ by nature. Yet even individual hobbies such as reading saw an increase in happiness when ____47____. Epley, a behavioral scientist in Chicago, observed, “This continues to show how surprisingly positive social ____48____ is.” The lesson, researchers suggest, is to be ____49____. Schedule time with others. Even daily routines can become ____50____. Catch up with a friend on the phone — social contact doesn’t always need to be face-to-face; phone calls also ____51____. Or share a ride home. As Epley puts it: “Having a good life is about ____52____ positive experiences together until it becomes a habit.” In short, happiness may not ____53____ what we do, but who we do it with — a ____54____ that our instinct (本能) for connection remains our most reliable source of ____55____. 41. Mr. and Mrs. Martin wanted to make it warm and lovely, so they decided to do some decorating themselves. That morning, Mrs. Martin stood at the door, reminding her busy husband. “Don’t climb too high, don’t move heavy boxes, and don’t forget to rest,” she said again and again, before she eventually headed out to buy curtains. Earlier, their daughter Emily had called. She said she was tied up with her job in another city, but promised, “Don’t worry, we’ll celebrate together soon.” The couple missed her, of course, but they smiled at each other and agreed it would be meaningful to get the new home ready, a warm welcome awaiting their daughter’s arrival. Mr. Martin waved goodbye to his wife and went back to his decorating work, confident and full of energy at first. But soon the living room turned into a battlefield. Boxes, nails, a hammer and screwdrivers lay everywhere. Paint splashed onto the floor, and the wall looked like a child’s drawing. And several photo frames were scattered on the ground. “A spider!” Mr. Martin climbed onto a shaky stool to chase it away-his wife hated those things — but instead he slipped and broke a photo frame. “Ouch, my back!” he groaned, sweat trickling down his forehead. He began to wonder whether he was really able to do this job alone. Then came a sharp smell from the kitchen. “Oh no, my cake!” Mr. Martin dragged himself to open the oven. The cake, which he had planned to surprise his wife, was now nothing but a hard black rock. He stared at it, shaking his head. “Should I admit the mess? Or pretend nothing happened?” he whispered. Suddenly, the door creaked open. Mrs. Martin stepped inside with the new curtains in her arms. Paragraph 1: For a moment, Mrs. Martin stood frozen. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: With the new curtains finally in place, the doorbell rang. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2026届福建省闽侯县第一中学高三下学期第一次校级适应性训练 英语试题 命题教师:吴文芳 审核教师:林心悦 2026.03.23 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 注意事项: 1. What will Ben do at lunchtime? 23. A. Curious. B. Critical. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful. 28. D 29. A 30. B 31. B 33. A 34. C 35. 根据第一段中的“The shots of deep space this produces are remarkably beautiful, transforming an apparently empty sky into a field dotted with thousands of distant galaxies.(它拍摄的深空照片异常美丽,将看似空旷的天空变成了布满数千个遥远星系的领域)”以及第二段中的“The first surveys of the early universe have surprised astronomers, as the galaxies seem brighter than expected, with more star formation and larger black holes.(对早期宇宙的首次观测让天文学家感到惊讶,因为这些星系似乎比预期的更亮,有更多的恒星形成和更大的黑洞)”可知,JWST的观测结果刷新了我们对深空的认知,让我们看到了此前未预料到的宇宙景象。 根据第三段中的“The process is a bit odd — often requiring researchers to argue simultaneously that the proposed observations would transform astronomy, but also that we know exactly what they will show.(这个过程有点奇怪——通常要求研究人员同时证明,拟议的观测将改变天文学,同时还要证明我们确切知道观测结果会是什么)”以及第四段中的“There are normally seven or eight times as many proposals as can be accepted, so risky observations have trouble getting through.(通常情况下,申请的数量是可接受数量的七八倍,因此有风险的观测很难通过)”可知,哈勃望远镜的申请流程要求研究人员既证明观测的突破性,又要确切知道结果,这使得具有不确定性的风险观测难以通过,缺乏灵活性。故选A项。 根据第五段中的“But once you start looking, you will find that astronomical history is filled with discoveries made by accident, or while scientists were looking for something else entirely.(但一旦你开始探索,你会发现天文学史上充满了意外发现,或者是科学家在寻找完全不同的东西时的发现)”以及后文卡西尼探测器原本专注于探索土星环和土卫六,却意外发现土卫二南极有喷泉的例子可知,早期宇宙中恒星形成如烟花般璀璨这一发现是意外的。 通读全文可知,文章通过JWST、哈勃望远镜的观测发现以及卡西尼探测器的意外发现,阐述了宇宙探索中意外发现的普遍性和重要性,结合最后一段“Surprise is fun, so maybe we should embrace serendipity a little more. But whether it is staring into deep space or exploring the solar system, experience has taught us that preparing to be surprised by the universe is the best way to make new discoveries.(惊喜本身充满乐趣,所以或许我们应该多一些对偶然的接纳与包容。 We are faced with increasing pressure to make sensible decisions about every aspect of our lives — from choosing the healthiest breakfast option to finding a school or university to attend. A 37. F 38. D 39. G 40. You might be leaving some happiness on the table by doing your everyday activities all by yourself. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, offering a stark contrast to the rush of everyday life. I stumbled upon it one rainy day, seeking shelter from the downpour. As I stepped into the courtyard, I was greeted by lush greenery, delicate flowers, and the soothing sound of raindrops on leaves. This unexpected encounter revealed a peaceful refuge in the midst of the busy campus life. Mr. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Paragraph 1: For a moment, Mrs. Martin stood frozen. Her eyes widened at the messy living room — paint splatters on the floor, scattered tools, and the broken photo frame. When she spotted the blackened cake in the oven, she let out a soft sigh. Mr. Martin lowered his head in shame, ready for criticism. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Martin walked over and gently touched his back. “Are you hurt?” she asked worriedly. Then she smiled, “We’re decorating a home, not building a palace. Mess is part of the fun.” Together, they started cleaning up, with Mr. Martin sharing his clumsy attempts to chase the spider. Paragraph 2: With the new curtains finally in place, the doorbell rang. It was Emily, holding a big bunch of flowers. She stepped inside and gasped, “Wow, it feels like home already!” Her eyes fell on the slightly messy but warm room, and then on the black cake. Mr. Martin scratched his head awkwardly, but Emily laughed and said, “I love it — it’s full of your love.” That evening, they ordered takeout, talked and laughed while arranging photo frames. The messy living room, once a battlefield, had turned into the warmest corner of their new home. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发现:spot/discover ②走过去:walk over/go over ③轻拍他背部:gently touch his back/pat him on the back gently 情绪类 ①羞愧地:in shame/shamefacedly ②出乎意料地:unexpectedly/surprisingly 【点睛】【高分句型1】When she spotted the blackened cake in the oven, she let out a soft sigh.
