As soon as you meet a person, you form an impression of him based on his postures,
gestures and facial expressions. This is why it is important to make a good first impression on
the person who will be interviewing you.Within the first 60 seconds of meeting you,the
interviewer will have formed an impression about what type of person you are and what kind
of employee you would become, and 55%of this will be based only on your body language.
Here are some tips to make that impression a good one.
First of all, relax.Think positive thoughts and you are more likely to come across as a
positive, confident person during the interview.Dress smartly,as your appearance is one of the
first things an interviewer will notice you.Stand up straight, and walk in with your shoulders
back and your head up.Try to avoid slowing down as you walk into the room because this
suggests fear and uncertainty.Shake hands with the interviewer firmly. You should have a
positive handshake and a warm smile.Opening your coat or jacket as you sit down shows that
you,too,are open.
Posture is important. You should be sitting well back in your seat.Sit up straight and lean
forward slightly, but not too much.Sitting at too much of an angle expresses discomfort and
distrust. Two of the most common defensive (signals are crossing your arms and
legs,so try to avoid them.
Another important issue is eye contact.Looking someone in the eye shows confidence in
yourself and trust in the other person. However, don't overdo it,as too much eye contact or
staring will make the other person uncomfortable.Use more eye contact when listening than
when talking, and when you look away, look down.Looking up at the ceiling will make you
seem bored or rude.
19.The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell readers_
A.what a good first impression is
B.how to make a good first impression
C.how long it takes to make a first impression
D.the importance of making a good first impression
20.Which of the following does the author advise you to do when you are being interviewed?
A.Cross your arms or legs.
B.Open your coat or jacket when sitting down.
3/10
C.Go into the room more slowly than usual.
D.Avoid looking at the eyes of the interviewer directly.
21.If you lean forward too much,it means
A.you are very thrilled
B.you are really comfortable
C.you don't trust others
D.you don't have confidence
22.Where can we read this passage?
A.In a newspaper.
B.In a biography.
C.In a chemical paper.
D.In a fiction novel.

A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on Sina Weibo recently. So
what is Versailles literature?
Actually, the term has nothing to do with the French palace nor with literature. It came
from The Rose of Versailles,a Japanese manga series about aristocratic(贵族化的)life at
the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese
influencer earlier this year.Known as humblebragging,it is a boast (disguised as a
complaint."I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate?"and "I thought
I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge
diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last nightare some examples of Versailles literature. The
intention is to show off---usually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that's
not the point.
As the 19th century English author Jane Austen famously wrote,"Nothing is more
dishonest than the appearance of modesty."The psychology behind humblebragging is to be
recognized for one's successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars.
In her article titled Why do people hate humblebragging?published in Psychology Today,
psychologist Dr.Susan Krauss Whitbourne at the University of Massachusetts Amherst noted
that humblebragging is a "strategy in pursuit of respect"because it draws attention to one's
accomplishments in a circuitous way.
However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion
strategy does not work.In the essay Humblebragging:A distinct and ineffective self
presentation strategy, the University of North Carolina researcher Ovul Sezer and Harvard
University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that
humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former's
insincerity."The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity.People
4/10
don't like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers,"said
Francesca Gino.
So,how can we annoy humblebraggers back?"Just pretend you don't get whatever it is
they try to show off,"a netizen advised."And respond with genuine sympathy for their
complaints.”
23.Which of the following statements is typical of Versailles literature"?
A.You know who my father is?My father is the boss of a big company.
B.I'm fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.
C.It's a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.
D.Got five offers to date.I'm at a loss for which to choose.
24.What is the psychology behind humblebragging?
A.To earn others'admiration.
B.To win others'sympathy.
C.To show his/her sincerity.
D.To mask his/her complaint
25.What does the underlined word"circuitous"in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.indirect
B.straightforward
C.obvious
D.sharp
26.What can't be inferred from the passage?
A.Braggers are relatively more sincere than humblebraggers
B.Humblebragging is an artificial appearance of being humble
C.If you want to be perceived positively, try using Versailles literature.
D.To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.

Vitamin D was recognized a century ago as the cure for rickets,a childhood disease that
causes weak bones. Then,in the early 2000s,a pile of studies suggested that low vitamin D
levels could be a factor in cancer, cardiovascular (disease,Parkinson's disease and so
on.This simple vitamin seemed to be a cure for whatever troubled us.However, all these
observational studies have a fundamental weakness:they can identify a co-occurrence between
vitamin D and a disease,but they can't prove there is a cause-and-effect relation.
To look at whether taking vitamin D had curative effects,Manson and her team started the
world's largest and most far-reaching randomized vitamin D trial. The study followed nearly
26,000 healthy adults,randomized to receive either 2,000 international units (IU)of vitamin D
or a placebo(安慰剂),for an average of5.3 years. The volunteers were almost evenly split
between men and women, and 20 percent of the participants were black.
The results came as a shock. Not only did vitamin D not reduce rates of cancer or heart
5/10
disease, but the trial also found that vitamin D did not prevent or improve cognitive function,
or reduce the risk of bone fractures ()The finding about fractures"was a real surprise to
many people,"Manson says.
In 2011,the Institute of Medicine established an expert committee to conduct a thorough
analysis of all existing studies on vitamin D and health. The committee concluded that the
bone-strengthening benefits of vitamin D remain steady when blood levels reach 12 to 16
nanograms per milliliter. They also found that there were no benefits to having levels above 20
ng/ml.According to measurements of vitamin D levels in the general U.S.population,most
had levels of 20 ng/ml or more in 2011.Levels have actually risen since then, meaning that
most people don't need to take extra vitamin D.
The ups and downs of vitamin D offer a lesson in humility. The relation between the
vitamin and disease is far more complicated than it first seemed and a reminder that scientific
understanding is always developing over time
27.What is the problem with the early studies regarding vitamin D?
A.No related cases were involved.
B.They lack convincing evidence.
C.No observation was conducted.
D.They fail to account for anything
28.Why were 20 percent of the participants black in Manson's trial?
A.To identify vitamin D-related disease.
B.To help solve the problems they faced.
C.To make their findings more reliable.
D.To show their respect for the minority.
29.What do you know about the findings in paragraph 3 and 4?
A.They proved vitamin D was the cure for disease.
B.They revealed that vitamin D made no difference.
C.They came as no surprise to Manson and her team.
D.They updated people's knowledge about vitamin D
30.What should we realize from the ups and downs of vitamin D?
A.Scientific understanding is dynamic.
B.We should not believe the old theories.
C.Research into vitamins is worthwhile.
D.Some diseases are practically incurable.

Teamwork Doubles the Strength
Admittedly, teamwork is undoubtedly important for any class or team to achieve its goals
and objectives.Let me give three reasons why it is advantageous.
As people,we bring diverse talents, strengths, weaknesses and experiences.A team is just
like a tapestry (that combines what each of us brings, resulting in an end product that is
diverse yet homogenous(同种类的).As team members exchange thoughts and experiences,.
there can be more efficiency and effectiveness at problem-solving.This pooling of talents can
also lead to greater creativity and success.31.It won the Premier League in 2016,to the
utter disbelief of many soccer fans.Leicester City, previously regarded as the weaker team of
the League, displayed extremely impressive teamwork, which led to its unbelievable victory in
soccer history.
Next, teamwork means members share the workload. When work is shared out and each
of us in a team specializes in specific tasks, the stress on each of us is reduced and the
completion of tasks before deadline is ensured.32.
33.Team members learn from more experienced members who may offer deeper
understanding and views.Newer members may also contribute new ideas.Besides encouraging
the sharing of knowledge and experiences, teamwork also develops soft skills like
communication and interpersonal skills.34.
Some may think that working in isolation (is more efficient since more time is taken
when cooperating with others. For more talented individuals, working alone means being the
star of a project.._35_.But,the loss of synergy(协同作用)that only team effort can generate
may also prevent the team from reaching its full potential.
A.Take Leicester City for example
B.Thus we can expect greater job satisfaction
