Lake Huron Lake Huron is the second-largest Great Lake and boasts the world’s longest shoreline. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects almost 100 historic shipwrecks, the oldest dating back to the mid-1800s, often referred to as “shipwreck alley”. Lake Michigan The only Great Lake entirely in the United States, is Lake Michigan. The Indiana Dunes National Park provides a home for a variety of wildlife. Lake Michigan also features more than 50 lighthouses, the most among the five lakes. Lake Superior Lake Superior is the largest, coldest and deepest of the Great Lakes and the biggest freshwater lake in the world. Within the lake is Isle Royale National Park where wolves, moose, and western painted turtles live. Lake Erie Lake Erie is the warmest and shallowest, which attracts migratory birds. In the 1960s, Lake Erie experienced severe water pollution and was thought to be dying. But thanks to the ecologists’ joint efforts by Canada and the US, water quality has improved significantly over the decades. Lake Ontario The smallest of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario holds almost four times the water of Lake Erie. Water from the other four lakes flows into Ontario, which features several special sights. Ontario recently drew scientific attention from experts and college students, who set out on a mission to create 3D digital models of 17 shipwrecks in the region. 1. What is a unique feature of Lake Michigan? A. Lying completely within the US. B. The second-largest lake. C. The warmest and shallowest lake. D. Receiving water from other lakes. 2. What can be inferred about Lake Erie? A. It is famous for having the most lighthouses. B. It is the deepest and coldest among the five lakes. C. It faced an ecological problem properly handled later. D. Its water quality has remained excellent throughout history. 3. Which two lakes commonly have shipwreck projects? A. Lake Huron & Lake Erie. B. Lake Huron & Lake Ontario. C. Lake Michigan & Lake Superior. D. Lake Superior & Lake Ontario. B I recently realized that my kids are most excited by television, or any screen. I’ve tried other choices: cake, the zoo and parties. Now I’m making a documentary (纪录片) film about children and their lack of connection to nature. When I take my children outside I see them change. At first they look at me as if to say: “What are we doing? The cartoons are on!” Thirty seconds later, their eyes move away from the 30cm zone that screens occupy. This supported my decision to make a documentary, Project Wild Thing, to find answers. But what are the questions? I’ve settled on these: Is nature good for children? Why don’t children love nature as much as TV? Yet when they get close to it, why are they so happy? When I started to find what would happen if my kids went outside more, I realized that the things children love are constantly marketed. Marketing seems like the best way to get kids to love nature. I’ve discovered a surprising truth and called myself marketing director for nature. I have made an app that re-connects people to nature. I have been sneaking around London replacing signs with advertisements for the great outdoors. But I’ve come to wonder then whether I should be selling nature. Maybe it’s the one thing we shouldn’t. I think I’ve found another way. Rather than adding nature’s voice to the noise of marketing, I started to work with ex-marketers from different fields, using an e-platform to develop a way to connect the thousands of groups who all want children to connect to nature. If you think fondly of your own childhood, or worry that children spend over half their waking hours on screens, please come and help. 4. What is probably the major concern for the author? A. Not enough free time to relax. B. Too many choices to have fun. C. Too much screen time at school. D. Few chances to connect with nature. 5. What was the kids’ attitude to going outside at first? A. Confused. B. Unwilling. C. Surprised. D. Supportive. 6. According to the author, what could be the best way to solve the problem? A. Marketing the concept of nature to children at school. B. Using an app to encourage people to connect to nature. C. Putting up more signs on the advantages of outdoor fun. D. Asking for the joint efforts from people from all walks of life. 7. Which is the best title of the passage? A. How to get kids to love nature more than TV. B. How to make a documentary film about nature. C. How to record happy moments with the children. D. How to prove nature is good for children’s health. C A short nap (小睡) during the day seems to increase the overall amount of sleep a young child gets, rather than being a serious threat to night-time sleep. Babies and young children typically nap during the day, a habit that has been linked to the development of early memories. This trend usually stops between the ages of about 3 and 5, but the timing varies, leaving many parents unsure as to whether their child should nap or not. In France, children start a form of preschool at 3 years old, which presents a dilemma (窘境) of whether staff should let them nap. “Some parents and teachers are concerned that napping during the day might disturb night-time sleep or reduce valuable learning time,” says Stéphanie Mazza at the University of Lyon in France. To see if naps meaningfully disturb night-time sleep, Mazza and her colleagues gave wrist-worn sleep trackers to 85 children aged 2 to 5 from six French preschools and measured their sleep over an average of 7. 8 days. This data, combined with sleep diaries filled in by parents, showed that an increase in nap time of 1 hour was linked to getting 13. 6 minutes less sleep at night, on average, and pushed back the time at which the child got to sleep at night by 6. 4 minutes. On days when children napped, their overall sleep time across the day increased by 45 minutes. “Naps resulted in a significant increase in total daily sleep time, bringing children closer to the recommended international sleep duration for a 24-hour period,” says Mazza. The World Health Organization recommends that children of this age should sleep for 10 to 13 hours per day. “Parents shouldn’t worry if their child still needs a nap before the age of 6,” says Mazza. “Rather than viewing naps as disturbing, they should be recognized as a valuable source of rest, especially when children are exposed to exciting environments.” “To me, this says — if they can nap, let them nap,” says Rebecca Spencer at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. 8. Why is the start of preschool at age 3 in France mentioned as a “dilemma”? A. Because daytime napping ends universally at three. B. Because parents in France are strongly against napping. C. Because worries about night sleep and learning remain. D. Because no napping after age 3 is required by law in France. 9. What method did Mazza and her colleagues use to conduct their research? A. Interviewing parents about children’s sleep habits. B. Using sleep trackers and parent-kept diaries. C. Comparing kids’ sleep patterns in different nations. D. Observing children’s behavior in preschools directly. 10. Which of the following statements agrees with the finding of Mazza’s study? A. Daytime napping greatly reduces the quality of night-time sleep. B. An hour of napping causes the same reduction in night-time sleep. C. Napping helps children meet the recommended amount of daily sleep. D. Daytime napping shortens the total sleep time within a day. 11. What is Rebecca Spencer’s attitude towards napping? A. Unconcerned. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Worried. D When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America, the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife. Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely. Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources. Millions of waterfowl (水禽) were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen. Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the ever-increasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat. In 1934, with the passage of the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act (Act), an increasingly concerned nation took firm action to stop the destruction of migratory (迁徙的) waterfowl and the wetlands so vital to their survival. Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and over must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. The very first Federal Duck Stamp was designed by J.N. “Ding” Darling, a political cartoonist from Des Moines, lowa, who at that time was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as Director of the Bureau of Biological Survey. Hunters willingly pay the stamp price to ensure the survival of our natural resources. About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System — a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come. Since 1934 better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat. Little wonder the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated. 12. What was a cause of the waterfowl population decline in North America? A. Loss of wetlands. B. Popularity of water sports. C. Pollution of rivers. D. Arrival of other wild animals. 13. What does the underlined word “decimate” mean in the first paragraph? A. Acquire. B. Export. C. Destroy. D. Distribute. 14. What is a direct result of the Act passed in 1934? A. The stamp price has gone down. B. The migratory birds have flown away. C. The hunters have stopped hunting. D. The government has collected money. 15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. The Federal Duck Stamp Story B. The National Wildlife Refuge System C. The Benefits of Saving Waterfowl D. These activities will not only encourage students to experience the power of stories, but also provide them with a platform to express themselves creatively. Thank you for considering my suggestions.
