A
China's high-speed railway network has grown rapidly over the past 15 years. It is now the largest in the world, covering over 45,000 kilometers. The development of high-speed rail has greatly changed the way Chinese people travel.
Before the high-speed rail era, it took more than 10 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai by train. Now, the high-speed train covers the distance in about 4.5 hours. This has made business trips and family visits much easier and faster.
The high-speed railway has also brought economic benefits to many cities. For example, small cities along the railway lines have seen a rapid growth in tourism. More people are willing to visit these places because they can get there quickly and comfortably.
However, building such a large railway network was not easy. Engineers had to solve many difficult problems, especially in mountain areas where they needed to build many bridges and tunnels. Despite these challenges, China has successfully built one of the most advanced railway systems in the world.
The government plans to continue expanding the high-speed railway network in the coming years, connecting more cities and making travel even more convenient for everyone.

D. It will become less popular among travelers.

Xinzhai Village in Yunnan Province is one of China's earliest coffee-growing places. Local temperature and soil are perfect for planting high-quality coffee beans.
Villagers first grew coffee trees in 1952. Back then, few Chinese people drank coffee, so villagers stopped coffee planting and grew rice and corn instead.
In the 1980s, international coffee brands entered China, and villagers restarted coffee farming. But foreign companies only bought low-grade beans to make cheap instant coffee. Villagers could hardly make enough money to live.
Since 2007, the village has upgraded its coffee industry. Farmers started growing high-quality beans and created its own local coffee brand. Today, coffee plantations cover over 9 million square meters. "Baoshan coffee" has won many international awards and sells worldwide.
The village also developed rural tourism. A coffee experience hall, coffee museum and farm stays were built. Around 120,000 tourists come to Xinzhai every year. The village has changed from a poor farming area into a famous coffee tourist spot.

Technology has changed nearly every part of daily life. The way we communicate, shop and study is totally different from twenty years ago.
Communication changed most greatly. In the past, people wrote letters or made costly long-distance calls to contact relatives far away. Today, smartphones and the Internet allow free video calls with people anywhere. Apps like WeChat and Douyin let us share daily moments instantly.
Shopping also sees huge changes. Twenty years ago, people could only buy goods in physical shops. Now online platforms such as Taobao and JD offer millions of products. People can order goods on mobile phones, and things arrive at home within hours or days.
Education is another field with big improvements. Online courses let students take lessons from top universities at home. During COVID-19, millions of students took classes online, which sped up the development of digital education.
Still, technological changes are not all good. Many people worry that long screen time harms health. Others care about online privacy and false information spread on the Internet. As technology develops, we need to make good use of its advantages while avoiding its downsides.
31. How did people keep in touch with distant family in the old days?
A. Through video calls.

五、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
A New Way of Living: Smart Cities
Imagine a city with street lights that turn on when people walk past, rubbish bins that tell cleaners when they are full, and traffic lights that adjust according to car numbers. These are not science fiction—they already exist in many cities as part of smart city construction.
A smart city uses technology and data to improve residents' life quality. Sensors are placed on roads, in buildings and parks. They collect information about traffic, energy use, air quality and more. Computers analyze the data to help the city run more efficiently.
Singapore is a top smart city worldwide. It uses sensors to watch public cleanliness and the physical state of elderly people living alone. In Barcelona, Spain, smart parking systems help drivers find empty parking spots fast, cutting traffic jams and air pollution.
China also makes big progress in smart city building. Cities including Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Shanghai use AI and big data to upgrade public services. For example, AI cameras in some Chinese cities can spot traffic accidents and send help right away.
However, smart city construction brings challenges. Privacy risk is the biggest worry—people fear constant monitoring will disturb personal life. People also worry about high building costs and online safety problems.
Even with these difficulties, building smart cities is an unavoidable trend. As technology keeps improving, more cities will become smarter in the future.

Changes in My Hometown
Great changes have taken place in my hometown over the past few years.
Years ago, it was a small town with narrow roads and low old houses. Most people traveled by bike or on foot, and there were no large shopping malls.
Now everything looks new. Wide roads and tall buildings appear everywhere. The biggest change is the high-speed railway connecting our town to big cities. It makes visiting my grandparents much easier. I used to spend four hours on the bus, but now the high-speed train takes only one hour. Though the station is a little far from my home and I need to take a bus to get there, I still love this change. It saves lots of time and makes our life more convenient.
I believe my hometown will become better and better in the future.
