Exploring the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China is the highest plateau in the world, with an average altitude of over 4,000 metres. It is often called the “Roof of the World”. This vast region covers about 2.5 million square kilometres and is home to many unique species.
Because of the high altitude, the weather on the plateau is very different from other places. The temperature changes greatly between day and night. Even in summer, the nights can be freezing cold. The air is thin and dry, making it hard for visitors to breathe at first.
Despite these challenges, the plateau supports a surprising variety of wildlife. The Tibetan antelope, also known as the chiru, is a graceful animal with beautiful horns. It can survive the cold winters and thin air because of its thick fur and special breathing system. The plateau is also home to wild yaks, which are large, strong animals that provide meat, milk and wool for the local people. The Tibetan fox is another resident of this region, known for its cleverness and ability to hunt in the rocky landscape.
However, the plateau faces problems. Climate change is causing the glaciers to melt at an alarming rate. Overgrazing by livestock is damaging the grasslands. Some animals are being hunted illegally. Scientists and conservation groups are working to protect this unique environment. They are setting up nature reserves and educating local people about the importance of wildlife protection.

Part 1: Read and Explore
Mountains are one of the most impressive features of the natural world. They cover about 24% of the Earth’s land surface and are home to more than 15% of the world’s population. They provide fresh water, food and shelter for millions of people.
However, mountain environments are fragile and face many challenges. One of the biggest threats is climate change. As global temperatures rise, mountain glaciers are melting at an alarming rate. This not only affects the ecosystems on the mountains but also the people living downstream who depend on the melted snow for water.
Another threat is deforestation. In many mountain regions, trees are being cut down for timber and farming. This causes soil erosion and leads to landslides. It also destroys the habitats of many rare animals. When the forests disappear, the animals lose their homes and food sources.
Tourism, while good for local economies, can also harm mountain environments. Too many visitors can cause pollution, disturb wildlife and damage natural landscapes. It is important to find a balance between development and protection.
Despite these challenges, there is hope. Many organizations are working to protect mountain environments. National parks have been established to safeguard these areas. Sustainable farming practices are being encouraged. Local communities are being educated about the importance of conservation. By taking action now, we can ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and benefits of mountains.
