The Yuyuan Garden is located in the northeastern part of Shanghai’s old city, next to the city’s famous place—City God Temple, and is the only remaining garden from the Ming Dynasty. For hundreds of years, it has served as the center for the Shanghai lantern show.
Lantern shows date back to the Han Dynasty. Later after the Ming Dynasty, such events became a cultural celebration in Shanghai. Traditionally, lantern shows started on the 13th day of the first lunar month of the year, and then ended on the 18th day of the first lunar month. During the festival, locals according to customs hung lanterns inside their houses and performances of lantern dancing were staged in streets. This event began to decline (衰落) during the late 19th century until a company in Shanghai reorganized it in the Yuyuan Garden in 1995. Grandparents Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after Labour Day (first Monday in September) in the US, did not start for business reasons but because of a determined woman, Marian McQuade.
McQuade began caring for the elderly when she was a child. After chores (家务) were done, she would help elderly neighbours with her grandmother, often taking along food and gifts. These experiences and her close relationship with her grandmother planted the seeds for a lifetime of helping the elderly.
When McQuade grew up, she became a housewife. She took care of her kids and had many grandchildren. She believed that spending time with elderly loved ones was very important and wanted to create a holiday where families could enjoy themselves together. In the early 1970s, she started her journey to make the holiday a reality.
She kept calling and writing letters to the local and state leaders until she finally got attention in 1973 from Senator Jennings Randolph. He introduced to the Senate (参议院) the idea of making Grandparents Day a national holiday. His plan fell through in the Senate, but McQuade didn’t get discouraged. After years of efforts, her hard work paid off. On August 3rd, 1978, the president officially made Grandparents Day a national holiday. He also stated how important it was to honour grandparents and understand the value of family.
Although Grandparents Day began in the US, it is now celebrated in many other countries. In Germany, Grandparents Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in October. In Mexico, it is on August 28th, when children often prepare a special meal for their grandparents or give gifts to them.
6.When is Grandparents Day in the US?
A. B.
C. D.
7.Which experience made McQuade want to help old people all her life?
A.Preparing meals for her grandma. B.Being raised by her grandparents.
C.Going to small family parties often. D.Spending time with elderly neighbours as a kid.
8.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Grandparents Day was allowed to be celebrated.
B.Making Grandparents Day a national holiday failed.
C.The Senate delayed the decision on Grandparents Day.
D.Jennings Randolph passed away from working too hard.
9.What can we infer about Grandparents Day today?
A.Its original meaning has changed. B.Its influence has gone beyond the US.
C.Other countries value it more than the US. D.Other countries celebrate it at the same time as the US.
10.Which of the following can best describe Marian McQuade?
A.Kind and persistent. B.Brave and intelligent.
C.Careful and imaginative. D.Strict and independent.
【答案】 6.C 7.D 8.B 9.B 10.A

Thanksgiving is an American festival. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time for a special dinner among family and friends. People make short speeches and give thanks for 1 (they) food.
We have celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America by ship in 2 seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how 3 (grow) corn. The following year they celebrated together by 4 (eat) a dinner of the new food.
We still celebrate Thanksgiving today 5 a traditional dinner. The kitchen is always the most crowded room in our house 6 we all help prepare the food. We lay the table, and then before we begin dinner, my father gives thanks for the food, so we remember why we celebrate the festival. We usually eat too much, but it is only once a year! We often talk a lot and tell stories after dinner as well. When it is all over, everyone helps wash the 7 (dish).
The festival is a very busy time for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. During the festival, there are plenty of other things to see and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The parade goes along several streets and 8 (finish) at the famous Macy’s store. Thanksgiving is the start of the Christmas season, and we start shopping for presents. Football is also important at Thanksgiving, with many teams 9 (play) games. Graduation day came. The ceremony was loud. I heard Sarah crying on my left. Owen was laughing the way he always did—big and loud. We had spent six years together at this school. Now we were leaving. But I found it hard to say goodbye to my teachers and friends.
After the event, our teachers led us back to the classroom.
“Everyone, sit down,” Mrs. Miller said excitedly.
I heard something being set on the table in front of me. It was a little heavy.
I reached out my hand and touched a smooth surface. Then—a round face, a small nose, a big smile.
My breath caught. “Is this... Sarah?”
“Yes,” the teacher said softly.
I stopped. I touched it again. I had heard that smile so many times. Now I could feel it.
I moved my hand to the right. It was another face with big eyes and a small bump (凸起) above the left eye. That was Owen’s scar (伤疤), earned from a fall out of a tree in the third grade.
“Owen,” I said quietly.
Face after face. All my friends. I learned them with my hands.
Then I reached for the last one. It felt different—older, lines around the eyes, a kind smile.
“Teacher,” I said.
I heard her take a deep breath. “Yes. That’s me.”
I touched her face again—the laugh lines and the kindness written all over her face. This was the woman who had guided me for six years. At last, I knew her face.
Under each face were tiny raised bumps. ‘Sarah Smith,’ the bumps spelled out. Under Owen’s face: ‘Owen Brown.’ This way, we would always remember each other’s names.
Tears came out. For the first time, I could “see” all my friends—and so could they.
6.Which picture best shows the writer’s feeling according to paragraph 1?

7.How did Owen get his scar?
A.He had a bike accident. B.He fell out of a tree. C.He was caught in a fire. D.He was born with it.

A.He always felt lonely at school. B.He forgot his friends’ names.
C.He truly looked forward to his new life. D.He was in a school for the blind.
9.What does the underlined word “they” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.The names. B.My friends. C.My teachers. D.The bumps.
10.What is the text mainly about?

Have you been to a lantern show in Shanghai? The Yuyuan Garden Lantern Show is a traditional event that takes place every year in Huangpu District of Shanghai. Among all the lantern shows in Shanghai, the one in the Yuyuan Garden is generally considered to be the most beautiful.
