When the branches of Elizabeth Milgrim’s pear trees saw the weight of a heavy harvest, the 14-year-old saw more than just a surplus (盈余) of fruit. While most would see it as a chore or maybe a gift for neighbors, Elizabeth saw a solution to a local food shortage. Disturbed by the idea of fresh food going to waste while neighbors struggled with food insecurity, she took her extra output to a local church food pantry (储存室) last spring.
That small action sparked a life-changing idea. Elizabeth realized countless local gardeners faced the same surplus problem. She founded Garden Givers Port Washington (GGPW), a volunteer group linking home gardeners and hungry households. She posted short videos on social media to call for volunteers, explaining their simple mission: pick donated fruits and vegetables, then deliver them free to community pantries.
At first, only three classmates joined her. They drove around town after school every Wednesday, knocking on gardeners’ doors to collect greens, apples and berries. Some elderly gardeners could not bend to pick fruits themselves, so teens climbed ladders and filled baskets for them. Weeks later, over forty volunteers signed up. With time going by, local supermarkets even donated unsold fresh food to their project.
Elizabeth met unexpected doubts at the beginning. A few elders commented, “young people will lose interest quickly.” Faced with such doubts, she stuck to her simple but meaningful work through hot summers and cold autumns. “Volunteering is not about big rewards,” she said in an online interview. “It’s about turning small, unused things into hope for someone else.”
Up to now, GGPW has handed out more than 1,200 kilos of fresh produce to low-income families. For Elizabeth, the greatest reward is handwritten thank-you notes from parents whose kids can enjoy fresh fruit every week. She plans to expand the project to two nearby towns next year, hoping more teens will discover the joy of giving.
4. Why did Elizabeth send extra pears to the food pantry?
A. To share gardening videos online.
B. To help locals with food shortages.
C. To stop fruits from being wasted.
D. To attract gardeners to join her program.
5. What is the goal of Garden Givers Port Washington?
A. To collect donated produce for local food pantries.
B. To supply farm goods to nearby supermarkets.
C. To teach locals to grow fruits and vegetables.
D. To deliver fruits and vegetables to gardeners.
6. What can we infer about the volunteer group GGPW from the text?
A. It accepts crops from teenage volunteers.
B. It serves over 1,200 poor households.
C. It receives a variety of support.
D. It appeals to many of Elizabeth’s classmates.
7. Which words can best describe Elizabeth?
A. Generous and determined. B. Humorous and selfless.
C. Thoughtful and tolerant. D. Modest and responsible.

Digital technology, ranging from smartphones and laptops to learning apps and AI tools, can effectively assist students’ studies and daily lives. However, uncontrolled use produces numerous negative impacts. It distracts students’ attention, shortens sleep time, reduces physical activity and weakens independent learning skills. Importantly, these problems stem from improper usage rather than the technology itself.
Unregulated technology use greatly lowers students’ learning efficiency and quality. Classroom distraction stands out as the most common issue. According to OECD’s PISA research, 30 percent of students get distracted by digital devices during most math lessons, which leads to poorer academic performance. To make matters worse, many students depend heavily on online search results and AI answers. They abandon key steps for deep learning, including careful reading, independent thinking, problem analysis and mistake correction. As a result, although their homework appears finished, they fail to build solid, in-depth knowledge.
According to a 2025 CDC (疾控中心) report, excessive screen time does great harm to teenagers’ physical and mental health. Late-night gaming and social media use can seriously affect teenagers’ sleep. Meanwhile, prolonged screen use takes up time for outdoor sports, walking and daily exercise, leaving students in poor physical condition. In addition, social media exposes teenagers to peer comparison and the fear of missing out, causing invisible mental pressure. A 2025 CDC analysis also proves that too much non-school screen time is closely associated with teenagers’ poor sleep, lack of exercise and negative mental states.
Thankfully, students can avoid these risks by developing scientific daily routines. Before studying, they need to keep phones away from desks, turn off distracting notifications and use only essential digital tools. Before bedtime, they should quit all online entertainment by a fixed time and charge their phones outside the bedroom. It is also advisable to finish exercise and housework before enjoying screen time. Instead of rejecting technology completely, proper management enables technology to better support students’ learning and healthy growth.
8. What does the word “unregulated” underlined in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Unprotected. B. Unfinished. C. Uncontrolled. D. Unchanged.
9. What can we infer from the 2025 CDC analysis?
A. Social media use reduces teenagers’ mental stress.
B. Outdoor exercise removes screen-caused harms.
C. Staying up late mainly leads to poor health.
D. Off-school screen time brings about health problems.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards digital technology?
A. Objective. B. Supporting. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Long screen time harms teens’ bodies and minds.
B. Proper digital use brings teens great benefits.
C. Digital tools are widely used in teens’ study.
D. Digital technology brings harm yet solutions exist.
D
More than a century ago, a German psychologist named Wolfgang Köhler did a famous experiment. He proved that chimpanzees could solve problems by stacking boxes to get out-of-reach food. Inspired by this classic experiment, Finnish scientist Olli Loukola designed a similar test to study bumblebees’ (大黄蜂) thinking abilities. His team’s new findings were published in the journal Science.
As a scientist who has studied bumblebees for about ten years, Loukola always finds surprising things about them. His earlier research showed that bumblebees can use tools, learn skills from one another, and even cooperate with partners. These abilities were once thought to belong only to backbone animals (脊椎动物) with developed brains.
To fit bumblebees’ flying habits, Loukola’s team changed the classic experiment. They trained bees to connect blue circles with sweet food rewards, and the bees quickly learned that blue marks meant rewards. Researchers put blue circles with no sugar water on top of a small container, which was too high for standing bees to reach and too narrow for them to fly inside. Video recordings showed nearly 75 percent of untrained bumblebees rolled foam balls under the circles, climbed on them and got the reward, though some bees spent more time and made more mistakes.
To confirm the bees acted intentionally instead of playing randomly, the team did a second experiment. They added barriers to block the bees’ sight of the blue circles and moved the ball to a new place. Despite the difficulties, around 80 percent of bees rolled the ball to the right position, proving bumblebees can solve problems independently. It is the first time that tiny-brained insects have shown such abilities.
Loukola’s research keeps breaking people’s old understanding of bumblebees’ abilities. He plans further studies to observe bees’ body movements while solving problems and explore changes in their tiny brains. He believes humans have not found the real limits of bumblebees’ intelligence, and more amazing discoveries will be made.
12. What can we infer about Loukola’s earlier research on bumblebees?
A. It proved bumblebees had developed brains.
B. It found bumblebees often work without help.
C. It focused on bees’ flying habits in the wild.
D. It challenged traditional views on insects’ intelligence.
13. What is the purpose of setting barriers in the second experiment?
A. To test if bees find the right path for rewards.
B. To see if bees can overcome barriers independently.
C. To check if bees complete the task on purpose.
D. To judge if the task will become easier to finish.
14. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Most untrained bees succeeded in the first test.
B. Most trained bees failed in the first experiment.
C. The two experiments chose the same settings.
D. Bumblebees’ intelligent abilities are fully explored.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Bumblebees Learn to Identify Blue Circles B. Bumblebees Have Unknown Intelligence
C. Bumblebees Use Tools as Humans Do D. Bumblebees Turn Out Smart Problem-Solvers

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last month, our school held an annual hiking activity. All Senior One students were required to climb a nearby mountain. Full of youthful energy and overconfident, I looked down on the slow pace of my classmates and grew impatient soon. I was eager to rush forward to the top as fast as possible.
Noticing my idea, my best friend Lucy gently stopped me. She reminded me that group activities required teamwork and caution. She warned me that the mountain path was complicated, and running ahead alone was extremely dangerous. She sincerely persuaded me to stay with the team and move forward steadily together.
However, I turned a deaf ear to her kind advice. Proud and stubborn, I insisted on rushing ahead of the whole team. I even joked that she was too timid and worried too much. Ignoring her worried look, I quickened my steps and soon left the crowd far behind.
Pride goes before a fall. Halfway up the mountain, the flat road disappeared. The path turned extremely rocky, narrow and slippery. I walked too fast and tripped over a sharp stone. I fell heavily to the ground, injuring my left knee badly. Sharp pain spread through my leg, making me limp and unable to move quickly. To make matters worse, thick fog suddenly rolled in, wrapping the whole mountain in gray mist. Visibility became so poor that I could hardly see the road ahead. Confused and slowed down by the painful wound, I wandered off the main trail. Soon, I found myself totally lost in the quiet woods.
I got into a panic immediately. The cheerful voices of my classmates faded away completely. The wind whistled through the woods, and strange rustling noises made my heart pound wildly. My legs were dead and I was sweating coldly. Extreme regret flooded my mind. I deeply blamed myself for being so silly and stubborn. I shouldn’t have ignored Lucy’s kind warning. Exhausted, painful and helpless, I was in tears and almost gave up.

6. What can we infer about the volunteer group GGPW from the text?
A. It accepts crops from teenage volunteers.
B. It serves over 1,200 poor households.

【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. D

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. D

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Suddenly, a familiar voice came through the thick fog. “Jack! Where are you?” It was Lucy, calling anxiously. Tears of relief rolled down my face as I shouted back. Moments later, she rushed to my side, her eyes filled with worry. She knelt down, examined my injured knee gently, and wrapped her scarf around it to stop bleeding. Then she helped me up and supported me firmly. “Lean on me,” she said. With her help, I limped forward slowly but steadily, encouraged by her words.
When reaching the mountain top, we spotted our teacher and all our classmates. They had been waiting anxiously, their faces lighting up with relief when they saw us. Our teacher gave me a warm hug, and classmates cheered. Overwhelmed, I turned to Lucy, tears welling up again. “Thank you for not giving up on me,” I whispered. She smiled and patted my shoulder. At that moment, I deeply understood the true meaning of teamwork: it’s not how fast we run, but how we trust and support each other.
