Reading for Writing Unit4 Body Language Can you think of an example of body language that is appropriate in China but might be understood in another cultures? As an educator, people often ask me how I know what is going on in the minds of my students. Many students are quite shy and don’t speak all that much. At the same time, in a classroom of more than forty students, it is hard to have many one-on-one conversations with each person. So, how can I really know what makes each student tick? 1. educator n. 2. go on in one’s minds 某人心里在想什么 3. all that much 那么多(常用于否定) 4. at the same time 与此同时 5. one-on-one conversations 一对一交谈 6. make sb tick 使某人有这样的想法 / 行为,摸清某人的心思 Can you think of an example of body language that is appropriate in China but might be understood in another cultures? As an educator, people often ask me how I know what is going on in the minds of my students. Many students are quite shy and don’t speak all that much. At the same time, in a classroom of more than forty students, it is hard to have many one-on-one conversations with each person. So, how can I really know what makes each student tick? 1. 主干:people often ask me As an educator 介词短语作状语,逻辑主语是后文 “I”; ask sb sth 双宾语结构,间接宾语 me,直接宾语是 how 引导的宾语从句; how 从句内嵌套 what 引导的宾语从句,作 know 的宾语; what is going on 固定表达:正在发生什么。 2. 主干:it is hard it 形式主语,真正主语是不定式 to have many one-on-one conversations; 固定句型:It is + adj. + to do sth 做某事是…… 的。 3. 主干:how can I really know what 引导宾语从句,作 know 的宾语; make sb tick 固定习语,从句谓语 makes,主语 what 为单数。 Can you think of an example of body language that is appropriate in China but might be understood in another cultures? It is easy to recognise when students are interested in a lesson. Most tend to look up and make eye contact. When I make a joke, they smile. When I talk about something difficult, they look confused. I know when students are really interested, however, because they lean forward and look at me. People have a tendency to lean towards whatever they are interested in. So if a student has his head lowered to look at his watch, it implies he is bored and just counting the minutes for the class to end. 1. recognise v. 3. have a tendency to do sth 倾向于做某事 4. lean towards 凑近,倾向于 5. lower one’s head 低下头 6. count the minutes 熬时间,数着分钟等结束 Can you think of an example of body language that is appropriate in China but might be understood in another cultures? It is as though they are asleep with their eyes open. 1. an absence of eye contact 没有眼神交流 2. distant expression 茫然失神的神情 3. as though 仿佛,好像 4. as though 引导表语从句,意为 “仿佛、好像”; with their eyes open with 复合结构作伴随状语。 Some students are amused by something else. The main thing is reminding distracted students that they need to pay attention in class. 1. be amused by… 2. look anywhere but at me 看任何地方,唯独不看我 3. daydream v. 4. with one’s chin on one’s hands 手托着下巴 5. occupy oneself by doing sth 靠做某事打发时间 6. stare out of the window 盯着窗外 7. distracted adj. Some students are amused by something else. Students who are sad or worried will nearly always wear a frown. They may also hide their faces in their hands like they are embarrassed or ashamed. 1. perceive v. While it is easy to perceive when students are interested, bored, or distracted, it is sometimes much harder to distinguish when students are troubled.
