Our idea is simple. We want to teach people how to understand and speak English like a native speaker. Different from broadcast English programs, we design special fun English programs based on the computer and use them to teach words and expressions we use in the real life. We talk in a casual style on a number of interesting topics and we share personal stories from our real lives. Now we have over two hundred units on our website. We make a new unit every week that you can listen to on your computer anytime you want. Our materials are from English movies, TV shows and real life conversations. We hope people will use the materials to practice every day. We’re sure that your English will improve a lot!

(本题10分)Some polyglots (通晓多种语言的人), who can speak quite a few languages, may seem especially talented. Zhao Yuanren, a Chinese American linguist, could speak seven languages and more than 30 dialects. England’s Queen Elizabeth I could speak about 10 languages. A famous Italian named Giuseppe Mezzofanti was reported to have been able to communicate in 30 to 40 languages. Polyglots are indeed amazing, but American teenager Tim Doner is living proof that anyone can try to be one.
As a child, Tim studied French and Latin at school, but he found it difficult to be interested in just words and grammar rules. When he was 13, Tim started listening to Hebrew rap music. One day, he looked up the words in a dictionary and realized he could put them together to make sentences! He started looking for people who spoke Hebrew so he could practise, and then, he decided to sign up for a summer Arabic class. One evening, just for fun, he posted a video of himself speaking Arabic and another of him speaking Hebrew. Hebrew and Arabic speakers wrote nice comments on his videos and gave him advice. Tim loved it. He could actually communicate with people! After that, Tim started looking for new languages to learn, and posting more videos of himself speaking new languages, including Chinese. Tim also began to use many other methods to make learning fun.
Tim wishes everyone would learn more than one language and not just as a school subject. “Knowing a language is a lot more than knowing a couple of words out of a dictionary,” Tim says. “Languages are for communicating with people, learning about their culture, and understanding how different people think. ‘Open up your mind to the fact that language represents a cultural worldview,’ says Tim. ‘You can translate words easily, but you can’t quite translate meaning.’ Or, as Nelson Mandela said, ‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.’”
24.(10分)What helped Tim understand Hebrew at first?
A.Watching movies.
B.Talking to friends.
C.Using a dictionary.
D.Taking online courses.
25.How is Tim different from historical polyglots mentioned?
A.He uses modern technology to learn.
B.He speaks fewer languages than they do.
C.He learns languages only at school.
D.He doesn’t care about grammar rules.
26.What can be inferred from Mandela’s quote at the end?
A.Language affects emotional connection.
B.Everyone should learn African languages.
C.Speaking well impresses other people.
D.Translation is often unnecessary.
27.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To list famous polyglots in history.
B.To show how to become a linguist.
C.To encourage language learning for communication.
D.To compare school language teaching and self-study.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.A 27.C
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了一些通晓多种语言的人,并着重介绍了美国少年蒂姆·多纳(Tim Doner)如何通过多种有趣的方式学习多种语言,以及他对语言学习的看法。
【详解】24.细节理解题。根据第二段“When he was 13, Tim started listening to Hebrew rap music. One day, he looked up the words in a dictionary and realized he could put them together to make sentences.(13岁时,蒂姆开始听希伯来语说唱音乐。一天,他在字典里查单词,意识到他可以把它们组合成句子。)”可知,最初是使用字典帮助蒂姆理解希伯来语的。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“One evening, just for fun, he posted a video of himself speaking Arabic and another of him speaking Hebrew. Hebrew and Arabic speakers wrote nice comments on his videos and gave him advice.(一天晚上,为了好玩,他上传了一段自己说阿拉伯语的视频和另一段自己说希伯来语的视频。说希伯来语和阿拉伯语的人在他的视频上写下了好评并给了他建议。)”可知,蒂姆使用现代技术学习,这是他与文中提到的历史上的通晓多种语言的人的不同之处。故选A。
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Or, as Nelson Mandela said, ‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart’.(或者,正如纳尔逊·曼德拉所说,‘如果你用一个人能理解的语言与他交谈,那会进入他的头脑。如果你用他的语言与他交谈,那会进入他的内心’。)”可知,从曼德拉在结尾的引语中可以推断出语言影响情感联系。故选A。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Tim wishes everyone would learn more than one language and not just as a school subject. ‘Knowing a language is a lot more than knowing a couple of words out of a dictionary,’ Tim says. ‘Languages are for communicating with people, learning about their culture, and understanding how different people think’.(蒂姆希望每个人都能学习不止一种语言,而不仅仅是作为一门学校科目。蒂姆说:‘知道一种语言不仅仅是知道字典里的几个单词。语言是用来与人交流、了解他们的文化、理解不同的人如何思考的’。)”可知,这篇文章的主要目的是鼓励为了交流而学习语言。故选C。
(本题10分)When learning a new language, our journey begins with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Yet the deepest experience happens when language is presented through culture. The recent World Chinese Language Conference (世界汉语大会) in Beijing explained this approach clearly. By presenting language education through cultural experiences — whether through tea, calligraphy or opera — Chinese language instructors worldwide are making use of the richness of tradition to build a connection.
A central idea stressed at the conference was that Chinese characters provide a basis for understanding the cultural logic that shaped the language. At the conference, participants from different corners of the world shared how cultural interest had inspired their language journeys. Alessandro Tosco, Italian director of the Confucius Institute in Sicily, described how Chinese opera offered him a way to understand not only the language but also its philosophical (哲学的) and emotional meanings.
The global spread of Chinese further stresses the link between culture and language. Tea serves as a historical example of this. As it traveled from Yunnan and Sichuan across the ancient Tea Horse Road, so too did Chinese words, philosophies and practices. The Chinese character “cha” developed into “chai” across Central Asia, while the Amoy dialect of Fujian province exported “te” to Europe. A single word thus carries with its centuries of exchange, reflecting both linguistic development and cultural spread. Teaching such word-origin stories not only enriches vocabulary but also develops a sense of historical and global awareness, strengthening the idea that language is closely linked to its cultural basis.
Finally, the World Chinese Language Conference showed that cultural experience is not secondary but basic to effective language teaching. Culture turns the study of a language from an educational task into a journey of understanding — a journey that, in the case of Chinese, links learners to centuries of artistic, philosophical and social tradition.
28.(10分)How do we get the deepest language experience?
A.By connecting language with culture.
B.By teaching Chinese with tea culture.
C.By learning grammar and vocabulary.
D.By presenting education through culture.
29.How does Alessandro Tosco see culture’s role in language learning?
A.It is the only reason for language learning.
B.It helps find philosophy in Chinese characters.
C.It helps understand language and its deep meanings.
D.It is an effective way to memorize Chinese characters.
30.Why does the author mention the word “cha” and “te”?
A.To show Chinese words change with places.
B.To explain language and culture connect closely.
C.To suggest dialects matter more than Mandarin.
D.To prove trade routes drive Chinese word spread.
31.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Learn Chinese Effectively
B.Chinese Characters and Culture Meaning
C.The World Chinese Language Conference
D.Language Learning Links to Cultural Origins
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。北京世界汉语大会阐释语言教育需结合文化体验,汉字、文化案例印证语言与文化的紧密关联,强调文化是有效语言教学的基础。
【详解】28.细节理解题。根据第一段“Yet the deepest experience happens when language is presented through culture.(然而,最深刻的体验发生在语言通过文化呈现时)”可知,将语言与文化结合能让我们获得最深刻的语言体验。故选A项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Alessandro Tosco, Italian director of the Confucius Institute in Sicily, described how Chinese opera offered him a way to understand not only the language but also its philosophical (哲学的) and emotional meanings.(西西里岛孔子学院的意方院长亚历山德罗・托斯科表示,中国戏曲为他打开了一扇门,让他不仅能读懂汉语的文字本身,更能体会到其中蕴含的哲学内涵与情感深意)”可知,他认为文化有助于理解语言及其深层含义。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“Teaching such word-origin stories not only enriches vocabulary but also develops a sense of historical and global awareness, strengthening the idea that language is closely linked to its cultural basis.(教授这类词汇起源的故事,不仅能丰富词汇量,还能培养历史和全球意识,强化语言与其文化根基紧密相连的观念)”可推知,作者提及“茶”的不同译法是为了解释语言与文化联系紧密。故选B项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文特别是第一段“When learning a new language, our journey begins with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Yet the deepest experience happens when language is presented through culture. The recent World Chinese Language Conference (世界汉语大会) in Beijing explained this approach clearly. By presenting language education through cultural experiences — whether through tea, calligraphy or opera — Chinese language instructors worldwide are making use of the richness of tradition to build a connection.(学习一门新语言,我们的旅程总是从语法、词汇和发音开始。
A speech in a play by Shakespeare can be as short as a word or as long as several hundred. But what is the most common length?
Staying away from Shakespeare himself for a moment, we can take Ben Jonson’s play Volpone (1606) and count the number of speeches and their lengths. The most common length is four words. The next most common length is five words. Of the other 16 Jonson’s plays, 12 also have a speech length mode (模式) of four. It was not just Jonson; it was everybody. After 1602, four-word speeches were the most common kind across all the early modern plays that survived.
The London theatre industry took off in the late 1580s and early 1590s and we see a concentration of speech length modes of nine or ten. After 1602, the mode of four predominated. If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.
Our suggestion is that the playwrights (剧作家) learned progressively from one another how to represent more closely the speech lengths of everyday exchanges and found that audiences responded well to these. They started to focus less on strict writing rules and more on the liveliness of everyday speech.
Another way to think of this is offered by the Russian literary scholar Boris Yarkho. He put forward an “index (指数) of liveliness” — the ratio of the number of speeches to the total number of lines in a play. He researched the works of the 17th-century French playwright Pierre Corneille and found that his comedies have a higher index because of their shorter speeches. The move from a mode of nine words to a mode of four represents the shortened average speech, and thus a move to livelier drama in Yarkho’s terms.
Nevertheless, we have no record of any dramatist or playgoer reflecting on the shortening of average speech lengths; our only knowledge of it comes from counting the words in the plays for ourselves.
32.(10分)What happened in English plays around the 1600s?
A.Their storylines were about famous writers. B.They were influenced by a poetic writing style.
C.They featured different storytelling techniques. D.Their speeches were generally shorter in length.
33.What does the underlined word “predominated” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Remained unique. B.Took the leading position.
C.Disappeared slowly. D.Played an educational role.
34.Why did playwrights change their writing styles according to paragraph 4?
A.To challenge traditional writing rules. B.To stand out by applying their unique style.
C.To avoid being affected by social values. D.To create realistic and acceptable speeches.
35.Which of the following is Yarkho’s opinion on the change in plays?
A.It saved actors the trouble of memorizing their lines.
B.It reflected people's preference for serious dialogues.
C.It helped present dramas in an active and pleasant way.
D.It made the characters express their feelings effectively.
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.D 35.C
【导语】本文为一篇说明文,讲述了17世纪后,大多数戏剧的话语长度转向四字模式,剧作家认为较短的戏剧话语能以一种积极愉快的方式呈现戏剧。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The London theatre industry took off in the late 1580s and early 1590s and we see a concentration of speech length modes of nine or ten.(伦敦戏剧产业在1580年代末和1590年代初开始发展,我们看到演讲长度模式集中在9词或10词)”及“If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.(如果我们只看莎士比亚的戏剧,我们会发现他做的和其他人一样:在1597-1602年左右,他从喜欢9个词的演讲变成了喜欢4个词的演讲,并且再也没有回去过)”可知,16世纪末尾,话语长度多为9词,10词,17世纪后,话语长度转向4词,话语长度变短。故选D。
33.词义猜测题。根据划线词下文“If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.(如果我们只看莎士比亚的戏剧,我们会发现他做的和其他人一样:在1597-1602年左右,他从喜欢9个词的演讲变成了喜欢4个词的演讲,并且再也没有回去过)”可知,划线词后以莎士比亚的戏剧为例,说明话语长度变短,并且再没有变长,推知,4词模式从此处于主流领导地位,划线词意思为:处于领先地位。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Our suggestion is that the playwrights(剧作家)learned progressively from one another how to represent more closely the speech lengths of everyday exchanges and found that audiences responded well to these. They started to focus less on strict writing rules and more on the liveliness of everyday speech.(我们的建议是,剧作家们逐渐从彼此学习如何更紧密地表达日常交流中的讲话长度,并发现观众对此反应良好。他们开始不那么关注严格的写作规则,而更多地关注日常讲话的生动活泼)”可知,剧作家写作时更加重视日常用语的生动性,因此,他们改变写作风格创造现实和可接受的演讲。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“The move from a mode of nine words to a mode of four represents the shortened average speech, and thus a move to livelier drama in Yarkho’s terms.(从9个词的模式到4个词的模式代表了缩短的平均讲话,因此用Yarkho的话说,这是一种更生动的戏剧)”可知,Yarkho认为,将戏剧的词数变短,有助于以一种积极愉快的方式呈现戏剧。故选C。
(本题12.5分)Everyone sends texts. It’s simple — one message goes out, and another comes back. 36(12.5分) They smile, wink (眨眼) and cry. Without much notice, emojis (表情符号) change how messages feel.
Researchers often ignore these tiny images. But Eun Huh from the University of Texas at Austin and her team decided to take a closer look. 37
Think about your last text. Did it have an emoji? Most likely it did. Nearly everyone uses them. But emojis aren’t just decorations. They work like tiny signals of emotion and bring life to plain words. 38 The researchers looked at this effect closely. Their analysis showed something surprising. People feel more connected to those who use emojis. It’s not about picking the right emoji. The magic lies in using them at all.
Why do emojis work so well? They make conversations feel softer and friendlier. They can help to reduce misunderstandings since tone gets difficult to express over text. They also act like little touches of warmth. 39 Most importantly, they can do what words sometimes can’t: show that you care.
40 This one focused on imagined situations. People weren’t texting real friends during the test. The researchers suggest testing real-time chats next. The experts pointed out that this study included mostly U.S.-based participants. Emoji meanings can shift across cultures. What works in one place might not in another. And there’s one more question waiting. What happens when emojis conflict with words? Like a smiley face paired with sad news. Future studies might explore those mixed signals.
A.Somewhere in between, emojis appear.
B.That sense of being heard led to stronger friendships.
C.Every study has limitations and this one is no exception.
D.They called them more responsive and the chats felt warmer.
E.A simple heart can completely change the tone of a message.
F.They draw attention and show effort, even in rushed conversations.
G.Her study examined emojis’ role in improving relationship closeness.
【答案】36.A 37.G 38.E 39.F 40.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了表情符号在信息交流中的作用、相关研究成果以及该研究存在的局限性。

【答案】One possible version:
Language Opens Cultural Windows
Learning a language is much more than memorizing vocabulary. It is a gateway to understanding another culture. When I began studying English, I not only improved my communication skills but also gained insight into Western literature, traditions, and ways of thinking.
To learn effectively, I recommend immersing yourself in real-life contexts. Watch films, listen to music, or join language exchange groups. Do not be afraid of making mistakes, as they are natural steps in the learning process. Most importantly, stay curious. Every new word or expression can reveal how people from another culture see the world.
Through language, we truly open windows to different lives and perspectives.

六、书面表达
67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
If you are walking across the campus, you can be embarrassed with every pair of eyes on you, especially when you’re 13 years old. I looked around to find a friendly face or a smile, but got nothing. I was quite disappointed. And I, in turn, felt a little foolish, walking across the campus with a false smile on my face. I was simply hoping to follow the advice that my mother had given me years before: When things get awkward, smile. No matter where you are, a smile will always be understood. At that very moment, however, I felt my mother’s advice didn’t work.
Just at that time, I was asking myself questions and concerns of any 13-year-old on the first day of school: Where would I sit at lunch? Who would I talk to? Not to mention, how would I make friends when I didn’t even speak the language? My heart was beating fast, and I felt nervous. Still, I did my best to be calm so as not to let others know just how scared I truly was.
When the teacher introduced me to the class as the “American girl”, 10 sets of hands immediately shot up. Some students had questions, while others wanted to practise their English with me. Because I didn’t speak much Chinese then, I talked with the other students through body language mixed with English and broken Chinese. However, I was not sure how much of it was positive. It was almost as if they weren’t sure what to make of me and I was being examined. Then again, who could blame them? After all, I was the first American ever to attend the school. So, we were all first-timers.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Then came the first class — Chinese painting.

【答案】参考范文
Then came the first class — Chinese painting. The teacher showed us how to use a brush to paint bamboo on a piece of xuan paper. Then all the other students began to paint. But it was quite difficult for me. How could I hold the soft brush and make it go as I wished? Hesitating for a while, I tried dipping the brush into the inkstone. When I took it out, drops of black ink fell on the paper. There was no bamboo, but big black dots!
As I burnt with great embarrassment, Li Hua, who was next to me, gave me a warm smile. I smiled back awkwardly. He came up to me and demonstrated how to use the brush. He moved the brush across the paper, and lifelike bamboo appeared! With his help, I finally completed the painting, although it was such an ugly one. After that, we became good friends. He taught me Chinese while I taught him English. We both made great progress in our studies. Yes, my mother was right. A smile did make a difference.

2.续写线索:

30.Why does the author mention the word “cha” and “te”?

31.What would be the best title for the passage?

(本题10分)A speech in a play by Shakespeare can be as short as a word or as long as several hundred.
