(本题10分)38-year-old Chris Ringot lives in Missouri and was born with Down syndrome (唐氏综合症). He began taking part in the Special Olympics at the age of 10 and has kept it up for decades. He has tried various events including golf, bowling and basketball, but swimming is his lifelong favorite. The first time he swam in a pool, he showed extraordinary natural talent and quickly fell in love with this sport.
Swimming soon became the most important part of his life. The friendship and team atmosphere in the Special Olympics meant a lot to him, especially during his teenage years. Chris turned into a top athlete in competitions. In 2011, he was selected to join the Special Olympics World Games held in Greece, where his relay team won a gold medal. This unforgettable experience became a precious memory for him.
After returning home from the World Games, Chris was invited to give inspirational speeches to local communities and schools. His speech at his alma mater was praised by a local newspaper editor as the best back-to-school speech he had ever heard.
Last year, Chris was inducted into the Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame. This honor recognized not only his athletic achievements but also his positive influence on other disabled athletes. His elder sister Carrie said she never doubted Chris’s success. “Our parents set a good example for us. They always told us Chris can do anything I can do, and often he does it better,” she said.
Chris is also grateful to his parents for teaching him to give back to the community. He serves in his local church with his wife and has worked as an assistant in a children’s hospital for seven years. Recently, he realized his childhood dream — becoming a swimming coach for the Special Olympics. “This is a huge milestone for me,” Chris said. “I hope to pass on my swimming skills and experience to young players.”

27.Which words best describe Chris Ringot?

C.Ambitious, strict and confident. D.Diligent, shy and sensitive.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.B 27.A
根据文章第一段中的“The first time he swam in a pool, he showed extraordinary natural talent and quickly fell in love with this sport. (他第一次在游泳池里游泳时,就展现出了非凡的天赋,并迅速爱上了这项运动。)”可知,Chris在尝试游泳后立刻就喜欢上了它。
25.词句猜测题。根据文章第四段中的“Last year, Chris was inducted into the Special Olympics Missouri Hall of Fame. This honor recognized not only his athletic achievements but also his positive influence on other disabled athletes. (去年,Chris被______密苏里州特奥会名人堂。这项荣誉不仅认可了他的运动成就,还认可了他对其他残疾运动员的积极影响。)”可知,能够进入名人堂并获得荣誉,意味着他被“接纳、入选”了。C选项“Admitted(准许进入,接纳)”符合语境。
根据文章第四段中的“His elder sister Carrie said she never doubted Chris’s success. ‘Our parents set a good example for us. They always told us Chris can do anything I can do, and often he does it better,’ she said. (他姐姐Carrie说她从未怀疑过Chris的成功。‘我们的父母为我们树立了榜样。他们总是告诉我们,Chris能做到我能做的一切,而且往往做得更好,’她说。)”可知,作者提及Chris的父母是为了说明他们给予的鼓励和支持是Chris取得成功的重要原因(秘诀)。
27.推理判断题。根据第一段“The first time he swam in a pool, he showed extraordinary natural talent and quickly fell in love with this sport. (他第一次在游泳池里游泳时,就展现出了非凡的天赋,并迅速爱上了这项运动。)”可知,他是有天赋的;根据第五段“ He serves in his local church with his wife and has worked as an assistant in a children’s hospital for seven years. Recently, he realized his childhood dream — becoming a swimming coach for the Special Olympics. ‘This is a huge milestone for me,’ Chris said. ‘I hope to pass on my swimming skills and experience to young players. ’(他与妻子一起在本地教会服务,并曾在一家儿童医院担任助理工作七年。最近,他实现了儿时的梦想——成为特殊奥林匹克运动会的游泳教练。“这对我来说是一个巨大的里程碑,”克里斯说,“我希望将我的游泳技能和经验传授给年轻运动员。”)”可知他是热心肠的;根据第三段“After returning home from the World Games, Chris was invited to give inspirational speeches to local communities and schools. (从世界运动会回国后,克里斯受邀为当地社区和学校发表鼓舞人心的演讲。)”及第四段“This honor recognized not only his athletic achievements but also his positive influence on other disabled athletes. (这一荣誉不仅表彰了他的体育成就,也肯定了他对其他残障运动员所发挥的积极影响。)”可知他是鼓舞人心的(inspiring)。因此,A选项“Talented, warm-hearted and inspiring. (才华横溢、心地温暖且富有启发性。)”最能概括他的性格特征。
(本题10分)On Perranporth beach in Cornwall, the local outdoor swimming group, the Perranporth Bluetits, jump into the Atlantic on cold days. Their friendship and sense of achievement are obvious. Encouraged by such refreshing experiences, community groups and the voluntary area have started designing “blue care” programmes to connect people with water. Some doctors even strongly recommend “bluespace” activities.
Encouraged by the health benefits of open water swimming, my team and I did the largest survey of open-water swimmers to date. Our study, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, shows that wild swimming improves mental (心理的) health by satisfying mental needs like freedom and control in the water.
As part of the Blue Health project, we surveyed around 20,000 adults in 19 countries about their interactions (互动) with blue spaces and their health. Among them, 1,200 reported swimming in blue spaces, including open-air pools, lakes, rivers and the sea. Wild swimming has more important benefits.
Surprisingly though, social connection did not play as big a role in these effects on mental health as we had expected, although the number of community swimming groups like the Perranporth Bluetits is increasing. At least in this international group, personal achievement seemed to be more influential than community connection. However, more skilled swimmers, who often choose adventurous places, sometimes reported higher anxiety (焦虑) levels. This suggests that wild swimming can be good but also challenging.
These findings add to earlier research on open-water swimming. They show that this activity is good for the physical and mental health of adults from different countries, explain how these benefits happen, and point out the discrepancy between natural waters and man-made outdoor pools. So, should we all be jumping in and recommending such experiences for better mental health?
The research does not quite support that yet. We need to be realistic about some of the other challenges our oceans face, such as drowning (溺水) risks and polluted waters. Still, our results support research into recommending getting close to nature to improve certain health conditions. This is something that the UK government is prepared to spend millions on.
What is the activity of the Perranporth Bluetits according to paragraph 1?
A.Running on the beach. B.Playing in indoor pools.
C.Doing scientific research. D.Swimming in the Atlantic.
29.How does wild swimming improve mental health?
A.By reducing anxiety levels. B.By meeting mental needs.
C.By improving social connection. D.By increasing body strength.
30.What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Connection. B.Problem. C.Difference. D.Balance.
31.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Wild swimming is risk-free for mental health.
B.Polluted waters are worse than drowning risks.
C.Research advises everyone to try wild swimming.
D.The UK supports health studies on nature connection.
根据第一段中“On Perranporth beach in Cornwall, the local outdoor swimming group, the Perranporth Bluetits, jump into the Atlantic on cold days. (在康沃尔郡的佩伦波斯海滩上,当地的户外游泳团体“佩伦波斯蓝山雀”会在寒冷的日子跳进大西洋。)”可知,该团体的活动是跳入大西洋游泳。故选D项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Our study, published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, shows that wild swimming improves mental (心理的) health by satisfying mental needs like freedom and control in the water. (我们发表在《环境心理学杂志》上的研究表明,野外游泳通过满足在水中的自由和控制等心理需求来改善心理健康。)”可知,野外游泳改善心理健康的机制是满足精神需求。故选B项。
30.词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“These findings add to earlier research on open-water swimming. They show that this activity is good for the physical and mental health of adults from different countries, explain how these benefits happen (这些发现为早先对开放水域游泳的研究提供了新的证据。它们表明,这项活动对来自不同国家的成年人的身心健康都有好处,解释这些好处是如何发生的)”和下文“between natural waters and man-made outdoor pools (在天然水域和人造室外游泳池之间)”可知,上下文强调野外游泳与人造泳池的差异,前者对身心健康有益,画线词意思应该是“不同,差异”,与Difference“不同”意思接近。故选C项。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Still, our results support research into recommending getting close to nature to improve certain health conditions. This is something that the UK government is prepared to spend millions on. (尽管如此,我们的研究结果支持了建议亲近自然以改善某些健康状况的研究。这是英国政府准备投入数百万资金的事情。)”可知,英国支持有关自然联系的健康研究。故选D项。
(本题10分)Weighted blankets(毯子), which have been advertised as a solution to anxiety and poor sleep, have gone from a not-well-known tool to a common wellness must-have, with producers saying they’ll bring better sleep and less stress to people. But do they keep these promises?
Sleep researchers have used weighted blankets since the 1970s to help children with autism, a kind of mental problem, and adults with sensory problems. They appeared on the market in the1990s, but most were only used by people with special needs.
Things changed a lot in recent years. Companies started focusing on what they call “people who feel anxious sometimes”— basically anyone having trouble with modern life’s stress. The ads worked: Time magazine even said the weighted blanket was one of the top 50 “inventions” of 2018.
The idea behind weighted blankets is simple. They usually weigh 2 to 13 kilograms— around 10% of your body weight. They use what occupational therapists call “deep pressure stimulation (压力刺激)”. The soft, steady pressure on your body makes you feel like being held.
A study of 120 psychiatric patients found that weighted blankets improved sleep quality over four weeks in people with some health problems, like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and ADHD.Smaller studies have shown similar results. One found that 63% of adults reported lower anxiety after just five minutes under a weighted blanket, while another study of psychiatric patients found 60% experienced reduced anxiety during their hospital stay.
However, these studies all focused on people with mental health conditions, not the general population that companies are now focusing on. There’s not enough evidence(证据) that they do good to common users who don’t have mental health problems.
This doesn’t mean weighted blankets are totally useless for healthy people. Shift workers — who have to sleep during the day — might find them helpful. They can fight the known health problems from irregular schedules. Healthcare workers, firefighters and pilots need short, useful naps. These blankets could help them fall asleep faster.
If a weighted blanket makes you feel calmer and sleep better, even if it doesn’t work like producers say, that’s still good. Just make sure you know what you’re buying.
What do weighted blankets promise to solve?
A.Sleeplessness. B.Weight problems. C.Headache. D.Forgetfulness.
33.How does the weighted blanket work?
A.By fixing users’ sleeping time. B.By working out users’ body weight.
C.By bringing users a pleasant feeling. D.By copying the feeling of sleeping in bed.
34.What does the author think of weighted blankets?
A.They are useless for healthy people.
B.They will have a very hopeful future ahead.
C.They are helpful to certain groups of people.
D.They may cause some mental health problems.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Science Behind Deep Pressure
B.Who Gets Most from Weighted Blankets?
C.Weighted Blankets: From Special Needs to Daily Use
D.Do Weighted Blankets Really Live Up to Their Wellness Promises?
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.C 35.D
根据第一段中“Weighted blankets(毯子), which have been advertised as a solution to anxiety and poor sleep, have gone from a not-well-known tool to a common wellness must-have, with producers saying they’ll bring better sleep and less stress to people.(重力毯,宣传为一种缓解焦虑、改善睡眠的方案,已从一种鲜为人知的工具,变成了常见的健康必备品。生产商说,这类毯子能为人们带来更优质的睡眠,还能减轻压力。)”可知,重力毯被推广为解决焦虑和失眠问题的方案。故选A。
根据第四段中“They use what occupational therapists call “deep pressure stimulation(压力刺激)”. The soft, steady pressure on your body makes you feel like being held.(它们运用了职业治疗师所说的“深度压力刺激”原理。毯子施加在身体上的柔和且持续的压力,会让人产生被拥抱的感觉。)”可知,重力毯通过在身体上施加柔和均匀的压力,模拟被拥抱的感觉发挥作用,即让用户产生很舒适的愉悦感。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第七段中“Healthcare workers, firefighters and pilots need short, useful naps. These blankets could help them fall asleep faster.(医护人员、消防员和飞行员需要短暂且有效的小憩。这类毯子能帮助他们更快入睡。)”可知,重力毯对于某些人群人来说是有用的。故选C。
35.主旨大意题。文章主要围绕重力毯“是否符合其健康承诺”展开,介绍了其从针对特殊需求群体的小众工具转变为主流健康产品的历程,阐述了它的工作原理、相关研究结果,以及对普通健康人群的实际作用与价值。所以最佳标题为“重力毯真的能兑现它们所宣称的健康功效吗?”。故选D。
(本题12.5分)How to Decide What Sport to Play
Playing a sport is an effective way to strengthen physical fitness and develop good personalities. Nevertheless, faced with a wide variety of sports activities, many teenagers feel confused about making a proper choice.
To begin with, you had better consider your financial situation. Certain sports, such as golf and skiing, require massive investment in professional equipment and training courses. 37 They often require minimal cost to begin because public sports facilities are widely available in communities and schools.
Next, consider your preference for teamwork. Some people enjoy playing in a group and working towards a common goal, so team sports that rely on close communication, like volleyball and hockey, are suitable for them. 38 If so, individual sports, such as swimming or track and field, will be more rewarding for those.
39 Natural conditions and local infrastructure (基础设施) greatly limit your options. For instance, people living near waters can try rowing or surfing, while those in cold areas have more chances to practice ice sports.
Additionally, take physical intensity (强度) and body contact into consideration. Fast-paced sports like basketball bring intense competition, while yoga and cycling offer gentle exercise. 40 Thus, badminton and archery are more suitable alternatives.
Actually, selecting a sport is a personal exploring process. Never hesitate to attempt different sports before locating your ideal one. The lasting goal is to keep active, gain happiness and hold on to regular exercise.
A.Others enjoy achieving sporting goals independently.
B.However, running or playing soccer is more economical.
C.Here are several practical suggestions for your reference.
D.Your local living conditions should also be taken seriously.
E.It is interesting to take part in outdoor sports with partners.
F.What’s more, some people are unwilling to accept body contact.
G.Modern facilities have greatly improved people’s sports experience.
【答案】36.C 37.B 38.A 39.D 40.F

Some people enjoy playing in a group and working towards a common goal, so team sports that rely on close communication, like volleyball and hockey, are suitable for them.(其次,要考虑你对团队合作的偏好。 A项Others enjoy achieving sporting goals independently.(而另一些人更倾向于独立完成体育目标)承上启下,且Some...Others...
39.该空为段首句,根据下文“Natural conditions and local infrastructure (基础设施) greatly limit your options. For instance, people living near waters can try rowing or surfing, while those in cold areas have more chances to practice ice sports.(自然条件和本地基础设施会大大限制你的选择范围。例如,住在水边的人可以尝试划船或冲浪,而生活在寒冷地区的人则更有可能参与冰雪运动)”可知,本段主要讲自然条件和当地基础设施会限制运动选择。D项Your local living conditions should also be taken seriously.(此外,当地的居住环境也应被认真考虑)概述了本段核心内容。
40.根据上文“Additionally, take physical intensity (强度) and body contact into consideration. Fast-paced sports like basketball bring intense competition, while yoga and cycling offer gentle exercise.(此外,还需考虑运动的强度和身体接触情况。篮球等快节奏高强度运动竞争激烈,而瑜伽和骑自行车则属于温和的锻炼方式)”及下文“Thus, badminton and archery are more suitable alternatives.(因此羽毛球和射箭可能更适合他们)” 可知,上文围绕运动强度和身体接触展开,后文提到羽毛球、射箭是更合适的选择,该空内容与下文构成因果关系。F项What’s more, some people are unwilling to accept body contact.(另外,有些人不希望与他人发生身体接触)符合逻辑。

About six months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one personal trainer who worked out. He did his routine with such a quiet determination that he made it all look very easy. When I wanted to quit, I watched him push himself to his own limits, and I found myself motivated to work hard.
Several weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上) effortlessly. I asked him if I could try a chin-up. I had never tried before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step up to the bar. I pulled myself up without thinking... Once...then twice. I had no strength left. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and a fourth pull. It felt so good and I smiled from ear to ear.
The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him to spot me again. Again, I did two. Again on day three and so on. I thought it was pitiful that I could only do two, but he said he was impressed with my chin-ups, explaining that most people couldn’t do them at all. He further told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
I just jumped in and gave it a try. A few months had passed since that memorable day at the gym. I continued to work on my chin-ups, slowly but steadily. With each passing week, I could feel my strength increasing and my determination growing.
One day, as I approached the chin-up bar, my trainer noticed the determination in my eyes. He smiled and said, “You know, you’ve come a long way in such a short time. I believe it’s time to set a new goal for yourself.” I asked, “What do you have in mind?” He replied, “How about aiming for ten consecutive (连续不断的) chin-ups? I have no doubt that you can achieve it with your insistence.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, one morning, it happened.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge. Ten chin-ups seemed like a significant leap from where I had started, but the belief my trainer had in me fueled my determination. I accepted the challenge and got to work. Every morning, I pushed myself harder than before. The numbers slowly climbed: three, four, five and then seven chin-ups. It was challenging, but I remembered the lesson that I had learned. The most difficult tasks can be achieved through consistent effort and belief in oneself.
Finally, one morning, it happened. I pulled myself up to the bar and completed ten consecutive chin-ups. I couldn’t contain my excitement and joy. I felt a profound sense of accomplishment. I achieved my goal through persistence. I had made it a reality. As I continue my fitness journey, I carry this lesson with me: No matter how daunting the obstacle may seem, the belief and persistence can help me overcome it. It’s not just about physical strength but also about mental fortitude and the power of setting and achieving goals.

How to Decide What Sport to Play
