Unit 1 Growing up 成长
Growing Through Hardship
No one grows up without pain and confusion. Adolescence is a stage full of subtle changes: we struggle with self-identity, quarrel with family, feel inferior among peers, and often doubt our own value. Many teenagers tend to avoid difficulties, thinking comfort equals happiness. But a study from UNICEF points out that true growth never comes from ease. It is hardship, setbacks and tough choices that shape our character.
When we face pressure, two paths lie ahead: give in to negative emotions, or pause, reflect and move forward. Those who choose the second way develop resilience — the most valuable virtue a young person can gain. Resilience does not mean never feeling sad or scared. It means allowing yourself to feel pain, yet refusing to be trapped by it.
Parents and teachers often worry about teens’ fragile mental state, yet they ignore a simple truth: independence is cultivated through solving problems on our own. Every time you calm down after a fight with your parents, every time you pick yourself up after a failed exam, every time you dare to speak your true thoughts, you are stepping closer to adulthood. Adulthood is not merely turning 18. It is taking full responsibility for every choice you make, accepting both the sweet and bitter results of your actions.
Growing up is a bittersweet journey. We lose childish innocence but gain clear self-awareness. We say goodbye to old versions of ourselves to become kinder, braver and stronger people. No matter how tough the present moment is, remember that all struggles you go through will turn into power to support your future self.

(2024·天津卷·阅读理解B篇)I looked through the window of the charming little violin shop, and my heart began to race. I’d been out to dinner that evening. Since it wasn’t dark yet after the meal, I decided to walk home from the restaurant. I had traveled that way before, yet I had never noticed that old little shop. But that night I felt drawn to the violin shop the moment I came across it. I wiped the dirt from the window to get a better look inside. Several violins hung from the dark walls, quietly waiting to be chosen. As my eyes rested on them, I felt as though I were looking through a window into my own past.
My childhood was all about the pursuits I had attempted, most of which had been chosen by Mom. She was like, “Join the swim team, Tara. Your sister is a good swimmer; surely you will be, too.” What she refused to acknowledge, however, was that I was visibly afraid of water. Every Saturday I begged Mom not to make me go to the swim meet, but had little chance of success. That said, with a bang of the starting gun, I would dive into the cold water with all my strength and swim to the other side of the pool as fast as I could, only to find that the other swimmers slid past me. I would have given it up if I had not heard my father’s encouraging shouts to cheer me on. When at last my hand would grab the edge of the pool, he would always be there with a warm, dry towel, telling me how proud he was of my desperate efforts.
Then came a turning point in my life the day our school orchestra visited my class, and gave a demonstration. The drums annoyed me. The flutes bored me. But the violin…ah, the violin. It made the sweetest sound I’d ever heard! My heart was dancing along with its flowing tune. For the first time in my life, I went so wild with joy. Tightly holding the permission slip from the orchestra director, I ran all the way home after school, and shakily handed it to my parents with a fear that they might dismiss my desire. They didn’t. Mom was thrilled to see me finally excited about something, and Dad winked at me while eagerly signing the slip. I began practicing the violin with great passion, and rose quickly in ability. Before long I had won the first seat in the community orchestra.

48. How did the author feel when she handed the permission slip to her parents?

根据文章第一段最后一句“As my eyes rested on them, I felt as though I were looking through a window into my own past.(当我的目光落在它们身上时,我感觉自己仿佛透过一扇窗户看到了自己的过去。)” C“She was reminded of her past experiences.(她被唤起了对过往经历的回忆)”与此相符。选项A(她以前从未注意到它)是事实但非被吸引的原因;选项B(她被里面的小提琴迷住了)是表面现象;选项D(她想给自己买一把小提琴)在文中未提及。
47. C
根据文章第二段,作者虽然“visibly afraid of water(明显怕水)”,每周六都求母亲不要去游泳比赛,比赛中也总是落后于其他选手,但她从未放弃——“I would have given it up if I had not heard my father’s encouraging shouts to cheer me on.(如果不是听到父亲鼓励的喊声为我加油,我可能已经放弃了。)” C“She persisted despite her fear and lack of success.(尽管害怕且不成功,她仍然坚持了下来)”正确。选项A(她天生有游泳天赋)与事实相反;选项B(她很享受比赛)与文中她求母亲不要去参加比赛相矛盾;选项D(她被母亲强迫放弃)与文中她一直在坚持的事实不符。
48. B
根据文章第三段“shakily handed it to my parents with a fear that they might dismiss my desire(颤抖着把它递给父母,害怕他们可能会拒绝我的愿望)”可知,作者递交申请表时是“nervous and uncertain(紧张而不确定的)”。
作者在游泳中虽努力却从未成功,而在小提琴上“began practicing with great passion, and rose quickly in ability(满怀激情地开始练习,能力迅速提升)”,最终“won the first seat(赢得了首席位置)”。选项B“One should find what truly inspires passion and pursue it.(人应该找到真正激发热情的事物并去追求它)”准确概括了文章主旨。
“afraid of water”
“not talented in swimming”
。
2.
A
“begged not to go”
说成
“enjoyed the competition”
。
5.
“always”
、
“never”
、
“all”

(2025-2026学年高一下·广东茂名市田家炳中学·期中)The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner! For the first time in history, three nations — the United States, Canada, and Mexico — will jointly host this expanded 48-team tournament. Here is a guide to 4 of the iconic (标志性的) stadiums where the world's biggest sporting event will take place.
MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey)
Temporarily renamed New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament, this venue will host 8 matches, including the highly anticipated final on July 19. Notably, there is no general parking available for World Cup matches here, so fans are highly recommended to use public transportation like NJ Transit to reach the stadium.
Estadio Azteca (Mexico City)
With a capacity of over 80,000, this historic venue is one of the oldest in the lineup. It will make history on June 11 by hosting the tournament's opening match between Mexico and South Africa. This also marks Mexico's record-breaking third time hosting or co-hosting the World Cup (previously in 1970 and 1986).
SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles)
Opened in 2020, this revolutionary indoor-outdoor venue features a translucent (半透明的)roof and a massive two-sided video board. It will host major games like USA vs. Paraguay on June 12. Since SoFi Stadium has no direct rail stop, fans should plan around Metro connections and official match-day shuttles
.Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City)
Formally known as GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, this venue is famous for its passionate sports culture. Located 8.5 miles from downtown Kansas City, the stadium has no direct rail access. To help fans travel easily, the local host committee has arranged $15 round-trip shuttle buses on match days.

Passage 2
(2025-2026学年高一下·湖南岳阳市平江县·期末)Jane Goodall (1934-2025), the famous scientist who devoted all her life to studying and protecting primates (灵长类动物), died at the age of 91.
Jane’s love of animals began at birth. As a child growing up in the coastal town of Bournemouth, London, she dreamed of traveling to Africa and living among the wildlife. When she was 10, she read the book Tarzan (人猿泰山), and the inspiration changed her life. Jane later earned a PhD in ethology, the study of animal behavior, from the University of Cambridge.
At the age of 26, Jane set out on her journey to study the chimpanzees (黑猩猩), attracted by the calls of the African jungle. With curiosity and determination, Jane ventured into the heart of Tanzania’s Gombe National Park in 1960, where she made history by observing chimpanzee behavior.
In 1977, Jane founded the Jane Goodall Institute with Genevieve di San Faustino in Washington, D.C. With offices in 25 cities around the world, the organization aims to improve the treatment and understanding of animals like monkeys and apes through public education and conservation efforts.
“We depend on the natural world for everything,” she said. “It’s like a beautiful web, with all the strings interconnected. As each species disappears from this ecosystem, the web weakens and may eventually collapse. So we must leave our young people a complete and unspoiled natural world.”
With every sincere interaction with creatures, she appealed to us to value and protect the wonders of our planet. Indeed, in the firm dedication and profound insight of Dr. Jane Goodall, we witness a lifelong commitment to nature, love for all living beings, and a vision for harmony and coexistence in our world.
1.What led Jane Goodall to pursue the study of chimpanzees?
A.Her PhD study in ethology. B.Her childhood life in Bournemouth.
C.The call from the Jane Goodall Institute. D.Her love for animals and inspiration from Tarzan.
2.What can we learn about the Jane Goodall Institute?
A.It was founded by Jane alone. B.Its members all come from America.
C.It educates people more about primates. D.It focuses on studying the chimpanzees.
3.What can be inferred from Jane Goodall’s words in paragraph 5?
A.The natural world is very beautiful to appreciate.
B.People should reduce their dependence on the world.
C.Young people are responsible for the extinct species.
D.Every species plays an important role in the ecosystem.
4.Which words can best describe Dr. Jane Goodall according to the text?
A.Talented and curious. B.Responsible and inspiring.
C.Determined and polite. D.Warm-hearted and careful.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.D 4.B

Passage 3
THE TAXI RIDE I’LL NEVER FORGET
Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi. One time, I was called at midnight to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for one light in a window.
I walked to the door and knocked. After a long wait, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took her suitcase and gave her my arm. We walked slowly to the street. She kept thanking me for my kindness.”
“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I try to treat my passengers how I want my mother treated.”
“You’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered.
“I don’t mind,” she said.” I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice
“I saw her eyes shining with tears.”
“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly turned off the meter. “What road do you want me to take?” I asked.
For hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived. Sometimes she asked me to just slow down while she sat staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the sun was coming up, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the hospice. As we pulled up, two nurses were waiting for us. They helped her into a wheelchair.
“How much do I owe you?” she asked me, reaching for her purse.
“Nothing,” I said. Without thinking, I leaned down and gave her a hug. She hugged me tightly.

根据第九段中的“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.(“我没有亲人了,” 她继续说道,“医生说我时日不多了。” 以及第十段中的“I quietly turned off the meter.(我默默地关掉了计价器。)”可知,司机意识到老妇人孤身一人且时日无多,出于同情与尊重,决定不再收费。
2.细节理解题。 根据第五段中的“When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”(当我们坐进出租车时,她给了我一个地址。然后她问:‘你能开车穿过市区吗?’)”可知,老妇人上车后请求司机开车穿过市中心。
3.推理判断题。 根据第四段中的“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I try to treat my passengers how I want my mother treated.(“这没什么,”我告诉她。“我尽量像我希望别人对待我母亲那样对待我的乘客。”)”以及后文关掉计价器、耐心陪伴等行为可知,司机将善良作为待客的原则。

Let’s go now.”(太阳升起时,她突然说:‘我累了,现在走吧。’)”
Passage 4
(2025-2026学年高一下·江苏镇江市丹阳市·期末)London, New York, Tokyo and Paris are world-famous cities. They have a great influence on the world economy. Millions of people live there, and they have many famous art, culture and education centers. But these big cities cannot stand for most other cities in the world. Today, 54% of the world’s population live in cities, and about half of these people live in small or ordinary cities with 500,000 or fewer people.
These ordinary cities are often ignored by politicians, business people and researchers. But they are active and important in social, cultural and economic life. After falling behind in industry, many of these cities are trying to develop again.
However, they do not have to copy big cities. Studies show that ordinary cities can avoid the bad results of development by showing their own special features.
Around the year 2000, many city leaders liked the idea of the “creative city”. They wanted to attract talented and creative people by making their cities open, friendly and modern.
“Regeneration” became a popular plan. Cities tried to turn old or useless places into new areas for creative and high-tech industries. This kind of project worked well in some old industrial cities, such as Detroit in the US.
Soon, many ordinary cities copied this creative city plan. Cities even competed with each other to become more livable and business-friendly. With many old industrial places, these cities easily got money for development.
But copying creative city policies can bring problems. House prices and land costs rise quickly. Many poor people cannot afford to live in their homes anymore.
So city leaders must think twice. They must care about local people and local situations before copying other cities’ development plans.
1.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A.Ordinary cities deserve more attention. B.Urban population should stop growing.
C.Famous cities will become smaller in size. D.Most cities will soon lose their advantages.
2.What lesson can ordinary cities learn from the studies?
A.Attracting creative talents. B.Making use of their own features.
C.Building various high-tech zones. D.Following in the footsteps of big cities.

Passage 5
(江苏镇江市丹阳市2025-2026学年高一下学期6月期末英语试题)When Lena Burton first moved to London in 2008, joining a charity handcraft group helped her settle in. To comfort and boost confidence for people in trouble, she hung posters in local hostels advertising “a new volunteer group”, and it was an immediate success. Thus was officially born Bright Hope Community (BHC), which now has seven branches across multiple cities to support those affected by homelessness and exclusion.
Studies have documented the close link between homelessness and poor mental health. A 2022 report revealed homeless people experience worse physical and mental health than the general population. Fortunately, research in Social Psychological Research found handcraft participation improves positive emotions, with 88% of people seeing mental health improvements and 78% reporting reduced stress and anxiety.
Frequently ignored and rejected, homeless people are often isolated. “We aim to do the opposite, where everyone is seen and heard,” says BHC’s CEO Dr. Kate Wareham.
Unlike other groups, BHC is free to join, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds and handcraft abilities, with no pre-registration, skill audition or regular participation. Activities start with a chat, followed by 90 minutes of group handcraft making and a hot meal afterward. The group leaders are teaching group cooperation in a way that ensures everyone is supported to grow both personally and socially.
Dan, who has been in the group since 2015, says his life has been transformed. Forced to leave his family home and live in a hostel, he withdrew from the world. Weekly activities gave him a routine among the chaos, providing hope during darkness. “When I joined, I was at the bottom of the ladder; the group was the start of climbing up, and, slowly but surely, I got to where I am today — a confident and outgoing person,” he says. Now Dan has his own flat and rebuilds family relationships.
1.Why did Lena Burton set up BHC?
A.To help advertise local shelters. B.To make her life in London easier.
C.To build charity groups across Britain. D.To cheer up people in difficult situations.
2.What can we learn from the research?
A.Handcraft activities are becoming popular.
B.Doing handcrafts helps lift people’s spirits.
C.Homeless people are in poor physical health.
D.Homelessness leads to mental health problems.

A.It is accessible to all people. B.People need great handcraft skills.
C.People must sign up ahead of time. D.Members have to take part every week.

Passage 6
(2025-2026学年高一下·江苏镇江市丹阳市·期末)Small talk is far more than empty words. It serves as a gentle social glue that connects strangers and eases uncomfortable silences in daily life. Mastering it can make you more confident in social settings and help you build deeper, more lasting relationships. Yet, it’s an uphill battle for many. 1
2 Asking open-ended questions is far better than closed ones. Instead of yes-no questions that stop conversations short, choose ones that invite personal stories and genuine feelings. People love to share their unique experiences, and this keeps the conversation flowing naturally. This way, you will never run out of things to say, even with someone you just met.
Listening is just as important as speaking. 3 Nod, smile, and give short, warm responses like “That sounds interesting!” or “I see what you mean.” This makes others feel valued and willing to talk more openly. If you only wait for your turn to speak without truly listening, the conversation will quickly die down. Good listening builds trust and closeness quickly.
Body language sends powerful messages. 4 Stand relaxed, keep your posture open, and avoid looking at your phone or clock. These small actions show that you are friendly and truly interested, making others feel safe and comfortable around you. It helps create a warm, friendly talking environment for both sides.
The more you practice small talk, the easier it becomes. 5 Over time, it will feel less forced and more natural, turning awkward moments into pleasant, meaningful connections. You will gradually become a skilled and charming talker.
A.Practice alone is not always enough.
B.Keep talks brief, positive and engaging.
C.Watch your physical expressions carefully.

Passage 7
(2025-2026学年高三·河北省衡水市联考模拟)A classic song says, “Everybody needs good neighbours.” But in 2026, do we still need them? Or have we forgotten how to be friendly with those around us? 1 But these days, many live next door for years without learning their names. Is neighbourliness disappearing?
Studies show we have less contact with neighbours than before. One survey found that 76% of us believe people were closer to neighbours 20 years ago than today. 2
There are reasons behind this fact. People today move homes more often for work or family needs, making long-term connections harder. In smaller communities, people attend the same schools or shops, so they get to know each other easily. But in cities with larger populations, these chance meetings happen less often. 3 Long office hours or irregular remote work means neighbours may not see each other. At the same time, many of us care more about privacy. Often, our only interactions are arguments about noise or shared areas.
4 A global study found that knowing just six neighbours can reduce loneliness and help people feel safer. For older people or those in poor health, informal acts of support from neighbors can be life-changing. Age UK has highlighted how regular neighbourly contact can help older residents stay independent for longer, while reducing social isolation.
Ultimately, there’s no hard and fast rulebook to being a good neighbour. 5 But at the very least, making sure to smile and offer a kind word can go much further than you might think.
A.Our working patterns also play a part.
B.However, having good neighbours still matters.
C.Most people spend more time socializing than working.
D.What feels caring to one may feel unwelcome to another.
E.Once, our front doors remained unlocked for friendly faces.

G.The survey also noted urban residents interact less with neighbours.

前半句是完整句子,此处无连词,为独立主格作补充说明;its history 与date back to为主动关系,且date back to无被动用法,故用现在分词dating。
根据句意可知,listen to wonderful erhu works与feel its unique artistic charm是两个并列的动作,用连词and连接顺承关系。

No matter how tough the present moment is, remember that all struggles you go through will turn into power to support your future self.
resilience n.

Passage 1

“Nothing,” I said. Without thinking, I leaned down and gave her a hug. She hugged me tightly.

3.What effects does “regeneration” plan have on ordinary cities?
A.It fully meets their development needs.
B.It successfully turns them into livable places.
C.It quickly drives up living costs in these cities.
D.It easily brings in technology for their development.
4.What attitude does the author hold towards creative city policies?
A.Positive. B.Ignorant. C.Careful. D.Negative.

D.Focus closely on what the other person says.
E.Progress comes with consistent and constant efforts.
F.Fortunately, some seasoned souls bring them hope and light.
G.Easy and broad topics are a gateway to smooth communication.
F.It also found that one in five have never spoken to neighbours.
G.The survey also noted urban residents interact less with neighbours.
