I'm not the kind of mother who normally brushes her daughter's hair, and my daughter has never liked sitting there, waiting for me to do it.
But today,I've sat my daughter Sally on a kitchen seat. She's sitting high with her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her long hair behind her back.I realize she is enjoying the moment. It's the last time for a week that our bodies will connect.Today,I'm sending Sally away for a week of summer camp. This was all my idea. She's nearly 12,and I noticed that I'm with my child nearly 24 hours a day.
Living on a farm without any neighbors,I've chosen a life that is quieter than a normal family's.But rather than expecting space away from me,Sally has become increasingly dependent. What frightens me most is that she has become a “mini-me”,even has the same hobbies, dreams, and opinions as me.That's why I pulled her to the summer camp: a nearby wilderness(荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.
After eating,I drive Sally to Hawk Circle.Once there,we are introduced to her fellow campers.Sally stands by them, holding my hand, horror in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer.“I need you for a few more minutes,” she tells me.I pull her away to walk to one of the camp's workers.“Excuse me,” I say loudly,“I'd like to introduce you to my daughter.Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.” He comes over to talk to Sally, and then I disappear before she realizes it.
It is a hard time for me to drive back. When I arrive home,I calm down and remind myself why I chose this way.I want Sally to have a chance to find herself.I want to learn who she is.If I don't set her free,I fear I'll never really meet her real personality.

We use robots for tasks like building cars and sorting mail, but can we use them as stand-up comedians? One robot called Robo Thespian has been trying out some jokes.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London organized Robo Thespian's performances to test whether it could be as funny as a human. The electronic comedian went on stage for a show with British comedians Andrew O'Neilland Tiernan Douieb, performing the same jokes as Douieb but with a few changes—it is a robot after all.The robot has some advantages over human comedians, too.
“We used computer vision and audio software 3 to notice the response of each audience member, something a human comedian couldn't do,” said Kleomenis Katevas, the robot's programmer.“The machine used this information to decide who to look at and which gestures to use.”
The robot also has other advantages over human comedians.Impressions of other people and sounds are very popular ways for performers to get laughs, and according to New Scientist reporter Celeste Biever, the robot can perform recorded sound by simply playing it back.It can also act out programmed pieces from Shakespeare or just about anything else.
“Another of the robot's advantages is more surprising.Because I feel less empathy(同感)for RoboThespian than for human comedians,I feel more relaxed during its performances,” Biever added. And of course,RoboThespian is unlikely to feel as nervous as other comedians,or be affected too badly by an audience member shouting at it.
The researchers say they're most interested in how audiences can be part of live performances. So in the future,we may be watching robots performing exactly the show we want to see.Do you think it's time for the robot to perform some more jokes?
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文,介绍了机器人Robo Thespian 以及它相对于人类喜剧演员的优势。

D.To assist human comedians to make up some better jokes.
解析 细节理解题。根据第一段第一句“We use robots for tasks...can we use them as stand-up comedians?”和第二段中的“Researchers from Queen Mary University of London...as funny as a human.”可知,机器人Robo Thespian最初被开发出来是为了测试机器人能否像人类喜剧演员一样有趣。故选C。
答案 C
9.When Robo Thespian gave performances on stage,it .
A.imitated the audience's voices to make them laugh
B.was affected easily by an audience member shouting at it
C.performed different kinds of jokes from human comedians

(2024·福州质检)Both humans and animals possess the ability to cry out for help when endangered or threatened.Plants,as it turns out,can too.
“We found that plants usually emit (发出) sounds when they are under stress and that each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound,”researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel wrote in their findings, published in the scientific journal Cell.“While undetectable to the human ear,the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects.”
Stressors like dehydration (脱水) and damage to leaves gave rise to the plants' high-pitched (尖声的) cries, which ranged from 20 to 250 kHz.The bigger the danger is,the more frequent a plant's signals are.“Unstressed plants emitted less than one sound per hour,on average,”researcher Lilach Hadany said,“while the stressed plants—both dehydrated and injured—emitted dozens of sounds every hour.”
To catch these sounds,Hadany's team surrounded tomato and tobacco plants with super-sensitive microphones. They then fed the data into an artificial intelligence program that could tell the difference between the species of plant and the types of sounds produced.
“Our findings suggest that the world around us is full of plant sounds, and that these sounds contain information,”Hadany wrote. She added that to translate that information,we just need the “right tools such as sensors that tell growers when plants need watering.”Doing so,researchers noted, may allow farmers to judge exactly when and where to water crops, saving water, increasing harvests, and lowering stress for both plants and humankind.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了关于植物会发声的研究。

(2024·湖北恩施高中联考)Being sophisticated can get you respect from the adults and other teenagers at your school. 16 Being sophisticated means paying attention to how you dress, how you act and how you treat others. It might take a bit of effort, but you'll end up being a confident, cultured person.
17 Conversations are often filled with interruptions, and many people listen only when they can put in their own piece. If you want to stand out as a more sophisticated talker, spend more time listening in a conversation than you do in speaking.Listening in an appropriate way means listening actively.Ask questions where needed and show that you're not distracting your attention from what someone is saying.
Be considerate and put other people's needs ahead of your own. 18 Rather than putting yourself first in every situation, consider how you should treat others.A perfect example of this is allowing the elderly to take your seat on a crowded bus or subway.
Dress for the occasion.Your clothes should meet the expectations of a specific event. For example,if you are attending a wedding, you'll want to have your finest suit on.In most situations, like a night out with friends, smart casual clothes are enough. You don't need to wear a suit or a fancy dress to every occasion. 19
Maintain good posture.Having good posture is helpful to your overall image. 20 To maintain good posture, imagine that ice water is poured down your cheeks, forcing you to straighten as you react to the cold.
A.Listen more than you speak.
B.Listen with patience and never interrupt.

How time flies!Today I will become a real adult. So I'm writing this letter to convey my deepest gratitude and love to you.
During these years,I gradually gained a lot of confidence from your companion and encouragement.I still remember when I failed in maths exams and even tended to give it up,you just patted me on my shoulder and inspired me to keep on.What's more, you praised me for my earnest effort and progress, which really gave me a sense of achievement. To be good parents is by no means an easy job as I imagined before,so I'm very grateful for your patience, guidance, responsibility and affection as well as all you have done for me.
Dad and Mom,I will spare no effort to pursue my dream and try my best to live up to your expectation.
Love you forever!
Yours loving boy,
Li Hua

Bob and I hung out the whole summer, running in the field, swimming in the lake and exploring everywhere joyfully.
It was a typical summer afternoon.Bob suggested we skip a language lesson to play basketball where I would show my defense,lay-ups and three-point shooting.I loved to explore,I loved sports, and I loved basketball most.I believed I would be the next LeBron James.
But my passion for sports came to a sudden stop when I began experiencing extreme back pain later that day. After several visits to doctors, finally I was told that spine(脊柱) surgery was necessary.Unfortunately, the surgery accidentally damaged my spinal cord (脊髓).I was in the ward hanging face down to relieve the pressure on my spine.
After four-month rehabilitation training (康复训练 ) in hospital, reality slowly set in—I was unable to walk again.I couldn't believe this should have happened to me,that it wasn't possible to recover, that I wouldn't become a famous basketball player, that my life,as I had known, was over.My future would be chained to a wheelchair.I was just 16 years old!
Back home,I learned how hard it was going to be to get around in a wheelchair.I withdrew from my friends and my basketball. At Bob's repeated invitation,I agreed to go to our regular swimming hole.Unable to make it down the riverbank alone,I was too proud to ask for help. When I finally realized my pride would keep me away from people and sports I loved,I let Bob carry me on his back to the river's edge.
Allowing others to help was a turning point.I realized my attitude was the biggest barrier I had to face. How could I expect others to see my potential if I didn't see it myself? How could I realize my basketball dream if I withdrew into myself?

One possible version:
One day,Bob took me to a wheelchair basketball game.We watched the players weave their way and make impressive shots. They were fiercely competitive and moved around the court with incredible speed and precision, using wheelchairs to their full advantage. How I wished I could be one of them!Seeing the spark of excitement in my eyes,Bob whispered,“You can do it if you try.”I hesitated,“You mean it?”He nudged me and smiled,“It doesn't hurt to give it a shot!”
With Bob's encouragement,I decided to have a try at my dream.Initially,it was a struggle.Getting around in a wheelchair was challenging itself, let alone defending or shooting.Luckily,I was introduced to some of the wheelchair players who shared some tricks and encouraged me to carry on.Bob was always keeping me company during all the practices. The more I practiced, the more potential I saw in myself.I was back on court with Bob,pursuing my basketball dream, just in a different way.
