My Best Friend
Everyone has a best friend. My best friend is Leo. He is a tall boy with short black hair and always wears a big smile.
Leo is kind and helpful. He is also hard-working and does well in all subjects. We often study together and help each other with our lessons. When I have difficulty with my English, he always explains problems to me patiently.
I learn a lot from him, like being positive and hard-working. I feel very lucky to have such a good friend, and I hope our friendship will last forever.

There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere. Dickon and Mary's seeds grew and produced poppies. And the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume (香味).
Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes he sat on the grass watching the insects. One morning, he watched a mole (鼹鼠) digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.
One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said: “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I'm going to tell you something very important.”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff. “I'm going to do a scientific experiment (实验),” he said proudly. “When I grow up, I'm going to make a scientific experiment about magic, and I'm going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn't really understand.
“I believe that there is magic in everything,” added Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He attracts animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There's magic in the garden, too. I'm going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I'm going to say, 'Magic is in me!' And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?” “Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff.
They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious. “Now let's begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting (吟唱). “Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (泛泛之交), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don't miss them when they're not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don't tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “guest friends”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don't talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (害怕), and they don't open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You're like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other's houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you're wrong, and though they may not be perfect, they at least will always care about you, and hardly ever do anything bad to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.
39. If you and David are neighbors and classmates, and do things together, but don't share your feelings, you are “______”.
A. pest friends B. guest friends C. best friends D. not friends
40. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ______.
A. how to make a best friend B. how to learn from your best friends
C. what a “best friend” is D. what a best friend can do for you
41. From the passage, we can learn that ______.
A. pest friends are more important than guest friends
B. we miss our pest friends when we're not with them
C. a best friend hardly ever does something bad to you
D. a “pest friend” will never become your best friend
42. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. ①/②③④⑤ B. ①/②③④/⑤ C. ①/②/③④⑤ D. ①/②③/④⑤
D
How many close friends do you have? And does the number of friends you have play a role in your life?
Researchers in Australia studied 1,500 people over 70 and found that those with strong friendships live longer. Good friends encourage healthy habits. For example, people with close friends are more likely to exercise, eat well, and feel good about themselves.
Friendships also influence wealth (财富). An American study of 10,000 students, over a period of 35 years, found that if you make more friends at school, you'll make more money in later life. People need good social skills at work to communicate with people and work in a team successfully. These are the same skills we use to make friends at school.
Online networks make it easy to stay in touch. On average, teenagers have 500 online “friends,” while adults have 130. But according to Oxford Professor Robin Dunbar, people regularly communicate with only about 150. He suggests we typically have five very close friends, ten more we contact sometimes, 35 we share hobbies with, and 100 we don't know well. More than this, relationships become less meaningful.
43. What did the Australian study find?
A. Good friends can stop people from getting ill
B. People with strong friendships live longer lives
C. Old people should make as many friends as possible
D. Healthy habits are the only key to a long life
44. Why can making more friends at school help people make more money later?
A. They have better social skills for work and teamwork
B. Their friends can offer them well-paid jobs directly
C. They spend less time on study and more on socializing
D. They learn how to make money from their school friends
45. What can we learn from Professor Robin Dunbar's idea?
A. Teenagers should have 500 true online friends
B. People regularly keep close contact with about 150 people
C. Having 100 online friends is bad for people's health
D. Most people have more than 35 very close friends

五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
阅读短文,回答下面5个问题。(每题答案不超过10个词)
Friends play a very important role in our lives. They share our happiness and sadness, and they are always there to support us when we are in trouble. But do you know how to make friends and keep friendships? Here are some useful tips.
First, you should be friendly and open. When you meet new people, smile at them and greet them warmly. A smile is a powerful tool—it can make others feel comfortable and welcomed. People are more likely to talk to someone who looks kind and approachable. If you are always wearing a cold face, others may think you are unfriendly and stay away from you.
Second, be a good listener. When your friends are talking, listen to them carefully and do not interrupt. Look into their eyes and nod from time to time to show that you are interested in what they are saying. Sometimes, your friends do not need your advice; they just need someone to listen to them and understand their feelings. Good listening skills can help you understand your friends better and make them feel valued.
Third, always be honest. Honesty is the foundation of any good friendship. Never tell lies to your friends, because once they find out the truth, they will lose trust in you. If you make a mistake, admit it bravely and say sorry. True friends will forgive you if you are sincere. Remember, a friendship built on lies can never last long.
Fourth, be helpful and generous. When your friends are in need, offer them a helping hand. It does not have to be something big—even small acts of kindness, such as helping with homework or giving advice, can make a big difference. A friend in need is a friend indeed. People will remember those who stood by them during difficult times.
Fifth, be cheerful and positive. Nobody likes to stay with a person who is always complaining or feeling down. Share funny stories and jokes with your friends to make them laugh. A sense of humour can bring joy to your friendship and make your time together more enjoyable. When your friends are sad, try to cheer them up with kind words and encouragement.
Finally, give your friends space. Everyone needs some personal time and privacy. Do not be too pushy or demand too much attention. Respect your friends' choices and opinions, even when they are different from yours. A healthy friendship is built on mutual respect and understanding.
Making friends takes time, effort and patience. You cannot expect to become best friends with someone overnight. But if you follow these tips and treat others with kindness and sincerity, you will surely find good friends who will stay with you for life. Remember, a true friend is the greatest treasure in life.
56. How many tips are mentioned in the passage?
57. What should you do first to make friends according to the passage?
58. What does “A friend in need is a friend indeed” mean?
59. What is the passage mainly about?
60. Do you think it is important to be a good listener? Why? (开放式回答,言之有理即可)

C. what a “best friend” is D. what a best friend can do for you
41. From the passage, we can learn that ______.

B. we miss our pest friends when we're not with them
C. a best friend hardly ever does something bad to you

A. ①/②③④⑤ B. ①/②③④/⑤ C. ①/②/③④⑤ D. ①/②③/④⑤

A. pest friends B. guest friends C. best friends D. not friends
