Active Learning vs Passive Learning
Have you ever felt like you studied for hours but still couldn't remember what you learned? The problem might not be how much you studied, but how you studied. There are two main ways of learning: active learning and passive learning.
Passive Learning
Passive learning is when you receive information without thinking deeply about it. Reading a textbook without taking notes, listening to a lecture without asking questions, or watching a video without pausing to think — these are all examples of passive learning. It feels easy and comfortable, but it's not very effective. Studies show that passive learners remember only about 20% of what they learn after 24 hours. This is because information doesn't stay in the brain unless it is processed actively.
Active Learning
Active learning, on the other hand, requires effort. Active learners ask questions, take notes, explain concepts to others, and connect new information to what they already know. They don't just read — they think. They don't just listen — they discuss. Research shows that active learners remember much more — up to 80% of what they learn. This is because active learning creates stronger connections in the brain.
How to Become an Active Learner
Here are some simple strategies to become an active learner: First, ask "why" and "how" questions. Second, summarize what you have learned in your own words. Third, teach someone else what you have learned. Fourth, take breaks and reflect on what you have studied. These strategies may take more time, but they are much more effective in the long run.
1. According to the passage, which is an example of passive learning?
A. Asking questions in class. B. Taking notes while reading.
C. Watching a video without thinking. D. Discussing ideas with a partner.
2. How much do passive learners remember after 24 hours?
A. About 20%. B. About 50%. C. About 80%. D. About 100%.
3. What does active learning create in the brain?
A. More stress. B. Stronger connections.
C. More memories. D. Fewer mistakes.
4. Which is NOT mentioned as a strategy for active learning?
A. Asking questions. B. Summarizing in your own words.
C. Teaching someone else. D. Memorizing facts quickly.
5. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Reading textbooks is a waste of time.
B. Active learning is more effective than passive learning.
C. Passive learning is easier and more comfortable.
D. Students should only study alone.

Learning Styles: Find Your Best Way to Learn
Everyone has a preferred way of learning. Understanding your learning style can help you study more effectively. Here are the three most common learning styles.
Visual Learners
Visual learners prefer to see information. They learn best through pictures, diagrams, charts, and written text. They often remember faces but forget names. They like to take detailed notes and use different colours to organize information. Visual learners should use flashcards, mind maps, and highlighters to study. They should also sit near the front of the classroom where they can see the board clearly.
Auditory Learners
Auditory learners prefer to hear information. They learn best through lectures, discussions, and audio recordings. They often remember names but forget faces. They enjoy reading aloud and may talk to themselves while studying. Auditory learners should record lessons and listen to them again. They should also join study groups where they can discuss ideas with others. Listening to educational podcasts is also a great way for them to learn.
Kinesthetic Learners
Kinesthetic learners prefer to learn by doing. They learn best through hands-on activities and movement. They need to touch, feel, and experience things to understand them. They often have good hand-eye coordination and enjoy sports or crafts. Kinesthetic learners should stand up while studying, use gestures to help remember things, and take frequent breaks to move around. Role-playing and acting out concepts can also help them learn.
By understanding your learning style, you can choose study methods that work best for you and become a more effective learner.
