B
Five middle school students, all wearing “I choose kindness” T-shirts, sat around a table discussing how to turn that message into action.
It was a class called “Ready, Set, Give!” at West Suburban Summer School, Minnesota, US. For five days, from 8:30 am to 4 pm, Hannah, Annette, Adelaide, Allison and Ben designed activities that could bring more positive energy into the world.
They learned a lot about service projects. For example, after hearing about “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon”, a program that provides care to soldiers, the students made cards for soldiers themselves. They filled care packages (爱心包裹) with nuts, beef jerky (牛肉干), toothbrushes and even air fresheners (空气清新剂).
The best part, though, was choosing their own service projects. Adelaide is planning to set up a lemonade stand (柠檬汁小摊) to help the homeless. Annette is interested in protecting animals. She plans to create posters to help people understand the dangers of ocean litter, pesticides (杀虫剂) and pollution. Hannah and Allison are focusing on protecting the rights and health of young people. Ben wants to help people do a better job of recycling plastic.
The students also visited Prism, a social service agency in Minnesota. They worked for five hours, sorting donations (整理捐赠物), putting food on the shelves and doing some cleaning.
Sarah Bailey, the activity’s organizer, is confident that the students’ projects will be successful.
“These guys are ready to take action,” Bailey said. “It’s more than I hoped for.”
14. What did the five students do in the “Ready, Set, Give!” class?
A. They learned to design new T-shirts.
B. They planned activities to spread positive energy.
C. They sold cards to raise money for people in need
15. What was the best part of the class?
A. Picking their own volunteer service projects.
B. Making care cards and packages for soldiers.
C. Cleaning up city parks and streets around the school.
16. Which picture shows Adelaide’s service project?
A. B. C.
17. What does the underlined sentence “It’s more than I hoped for” mean?
A. Bailey is not satisfied with the students’ projects.
B. Bailey hopes the students will do more work later.
C. Bailey thinks the students did better than she expected.
B 15. A 16. B 17. C
第二段明确写道:“...students designed activities that could bring more positive energy into the world.”(学生们设计了能为世界带来更多正能量的活动。)
第四段首句:“The best part, though, was choosing their own service projects.”(然而,最好的部分是选择他们自己的服务项目。)
第四段提到:“Adelaide is planning to set up a lemonade stand to help the homeless.”(Adelaide计划设立一个柠檬汁小摊来帮助无家可归的人。)
最后一段Bailey说:“These guys are ready to take action. It’s more than I hoped for.”(这些孩子已经准备好采取行动。 “more than I hoped for”意为“比我希望的还要多”,即学生们做得比她预期的要好。
C
Have you ever noticed a cat quickly running away from a bathtub? Most cats really don’t enjoy being wet. This common behavior (表现) has some interesting scientific reasons behind it.
Evolution may be the first reason. The ancestors (祖先) of our pet cats came from dry, desert-like areas in Africa and the Middle East. Water wasn’t a regular part of their lives, so they never developed a natural comfort with swimming or bathing like some other animals. These wild cats did not need to go into lakes or rivers, which explains why many pet cats today still act surprised or scared around large amounts of water.
Another major reason is connected to a cat’s amazing sense of smell. Cats need their own special smell to understand the world and feel safe. They spend hours cleaning themselves to keep their own familiar smell on their fur. Water, especially tap water which can contain chemicals (化学品) like chlorine, washes this important smell away. To a cat, this is like losing its personal identity card. At the same time, the strange unfamiliar smells in the water can confuse their sensitive noses, making the experience even more stressful.
Furthermore, a cat’s normal body temperature is higher than a human’s. This means that water feels much colder to their skin than it does to us. Getting wet can make them lose body heat quickly, leading to an uncomfortable and stressful chill.
Lastly, many cats dislike the feeling of water on their skin and paws. It can feel strange and uncontrollable to them. Sudden noises of moving water may also frighten them, as their natural feeling is to escape from things they cannot control.
So, when a cat seems unhappy about water, it’s not just being difficult. Their dislike is a mix of their ancient history, their need for their own smell, their physical sensitivity, and their natural feelings. Understanding this can help us care for them better.
18. Which of the following is TRUE about cats’ dislike of water?
A. Their ancestors lived by lakes and were good at swimming.
B. Tap water may wash away their familiar smell and bring them strange smells.
C. Their body temperature is lower than humans so they hate cold water.
19. What does the underlined word “chill” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. A feeling of coldness. B. A sense of stress. C. A loss of personal smell.
20. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Ways to help cats get used to water.
B. Scientific reasons for cats’ dislike of water.
C. The living habits of cats’ wild ancestors.
21. Where is the text probably from?
A. A novel about animal stories. B. A travel guide for pet owners. C. A science magazine for students.
B 19. A 20. B 21. C
第三段明确指出:“Water, especially tap water... washes this important smell away. At the same time, the strange unfamiliar smells in the water can confuse their sensitive noses...”,水,尤其是自来水…… A选项错误,第二段提到猫的祖先来自“dry, desert-like areas”(干燥的沙漠类地区),并不生活在水边,也不擅长游泳;C选项错误,第四段提到:“a cat’s normal body temperature is higher than a human’s.”(猫的正常体温比人类高),而不是更低。
第四段中提到:“Getting wet can make them lose body heat quickly, leading to an uncomfortable and stressful chill.”,弄湿会让它们迅速失去体温,导致不舒服和充满压力的chill。
最后一段总结道:“Their dislike is a mix of their ancient history, their need for their own smell, their physical sensitivity, and their natural feelings.”。
D
Imagine an AI-powered robotic dog that shakes its tail and happily follows you everywhere, or a smart study helper shaped like a wise bird that helps you solve math problems step by step. These are not just toys from stories—they are real AI “smart friends” appearing in our lives.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s toy market was expected to be worth 29 billion yuan in 2025. International brands from other countries are also set to develop AI products (产品) for kids.
Why do children like these toys so much? Experts say they use technology to build emotional connections. They remember your name, answer your questions and tell stories you enjoy. More importantly, they can help with learning. In the past, only rich children could have private teachers or special lessons. Now, AI can offer similar help to many kids. They can teach English; explain science, and create fun games based on what a child likes to learn.
But these smart toys also bring problems. Sometimes, they may give bad advice. For example, in a test, one AI bear told a child where to find knives and how to light a match. Also, if children spend too much time with AI friends, they might find it hard to play with real people. AI friends never say “no”, never argue, and never show their own feelings. This may make it difficult for children to understand real feelings or solve problems with friends later.
So, what should we do? Stricter rules are needed for AI companies to make safer toys for children. Parents also play an important role. AI toys can be good helpers, but they cannot take the place of family time, playing outside, or real friendships. Childhood should be a time to explore the real world, learn from mistakes, and grow with love and care.
AI toys are exciting new tools, but we must use them wisely. Balancing fun with safety, technology, and real human connection, will help every child grow up happily and healthily.
22. What does the underlined word “They” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Experts. B. Connections. C. AI toys.
23. What can AI toys do to support kids’ learning?
A. Remember kids’ names and tell them interesting stories.
B. Teach languages and science with fun games.
C. Help kids build emotional connections with others.
24. What problem may be caused if kids play with AI toys too much?
A. They will become better at communicating with real friends.
B. They may have difficulty getting along with real people.
C. They can understand their own feelings more easily.
25. What should parents do when using AI toys?
A. Control the time children spend on screens each day.
B. Let AI toys help children learn, but not take the place of real life.
C. Teach children how to tell the difference between AI toys and real people.
C 23. B 24. B 25. B
根据第三段中的“Why do children like these toys so much? Experts say they use technology to build emotional connections. They remember your name, answer your questions and tell stories you enjoy.”
根据第三段中的“More importantly, they can help with learning…They can teach English; explain science, and create fun games based on what a child likes to learn.”
根据第四段中的“Also, if children spend too much time with AI friends, they might find it hard to play with real people.”
根据第五段中的“Parents also play an important role. AI toys can be good helpers, but they cannot take the place of family time, playing outside, or real friendships.”

根据下文“Just between January 1st, 2019 and January 1st, 2024, there were 11,180 home fire deaths in the country.”
avoid doing sth.

Create a plan for escape,因此这里指逃生计划。

Many teenagers feel upset easily when growing up, and there are many reasons for it. Some feel upset because of too much study pressure, some because of arguments with their parents, and others because they can’t get along well with their friends. No matter what causes the upsets, it’s important to find proper ways to deal with them.
My cousin, Linda, is a 14-year-old girl. She often feels upset because her parents are too strict with her. They always ask her to get good grades and don’t allow her to do what she likes. Last month, Linda had a big argument with her parents because they didn’t let her join the school music club. She felt very sad and cried for a long time.
Her teacher found her upset and talked to her. The teacher told her to communicate with her parents patiently and tell them her true feelings. Linda followed the teacher’s advice. She had a heart-to-heart talk with her parents and explained that music is her hobby and it can help her relax. Her parents finally understood her and allowed her to join the club.
Linda told me that talking to others is the best way to deal with upsets. She also said that we should never give up when we feel upset. Instead, we should face our problems bravely and find ways to solve them.
