高考高频单词 DAY 35(说明文阅读) 板块一:真题再现 [(2018·全国三卷·高考真题)] Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness. But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000. Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762. 24. What attracted the early settlers to New York City? A. Its business culture. B. Its small population. C. Its geographical position. D. Its favourable climate. 25. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson? A. Two-thirds of them stayed there. B. One out of five people got rich. C. Almost everyone gave up. D. Half of them died. 26. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson? A. They found the city too crowded. B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere. C. They were unable to stand the winter. D. They were short of food. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. The rise and fall of a city. B. The gold rush in Canada. C. Journeys into the wilderness. D. Tourism in Dawson. A genius is the person who repeats the most times! 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 reason /ˈriːzən/ 原因;理由 nearby /ˌnɪəˈbaɪ/ 附近的 port /pɔːt/ 港口 river /ˈrɪvə/ 河流 settle /ˈsetl/ 定居;解决 place /pleɪs/ 地方;地点 easy /ˈiːzi/ 容易的 naturally /ˈnætʃərəli/ 自然地 suit /suːt/ 适合;适宜 communication /kəˌmjuːnɪˈkeɪʃən/ 交流;交通 trade /treɪd/ 贸易 harbour /ˈhɑːbə/ 海港 population /ˌpɒpjʊˈleɪʃən/ 人口 gradually /ˈɡrædʒuəli/ 逐渐地 boom town 新兴城市 overnight /ˌəʊvəˈnaɪt/ 一夜之间 unmapped /ˌʌnˈmæpt/ 未在地图上标明的 wilderness /ˈwɪldərnəs/ 荒野 gold /ɡəʊld/ 黄金 discover /dɪˈskʌvə/ 发现 snow-covered /ˈsnəʊ ˌkʌvəd/ 被雪覆盖的 mountain /ˈmaʊntən/ 山 icy /ˈaɪsi/ 结冰的 avalanche /ˈævəlɑːntʃ/ 雪崩 reward /rɪˈwɔːd/ 回报;奖励 necessity /nəˈsesəti/ 必需品 crowded /ˈkraʊdɪd/ 拥挤的 disappointed /ˌdɪsəˈpɔɪntɪd/ 失望的 tourism /ˈtʊərɪzəm/ 旅游业 chief /tʃiːf/ 主要的;首要的 板块三:词形变换(供背诵) 1. nature /ˈneɪtʃə/ 自然 — naturally /ˈnætʃərəli/ 自然地 — natural /ˈnætʃərəl/ 自然的 — supernatural /ˌsuːpəˈnætʃərəl/ 超自然的 — unnatural /ʌnˈnætʃərəl/ 不自然的 2. suit /suːt/ 适合 — suitable /ˈsuːtəbəl/ 合适的 — suitability /ˌsuːtəˈbɪləti/ 适合性 — unsuited /ʌnˈsuːtɪd/ 不适合的 — suitor /ˈsuːtə/ 求婚者 3. communicate /kəˈmjuːnɪkeɪt/ 交流 — communication /kəˌmjuːnɪˈkeɪʃən/ 交流 — communicative /kəˈmjuːnɪkətɪv/ 爱交流的 — communicator /kəˈmjuːnɪkeɪtə/ 沟通者 — telecommunications /ˌtelikəˌmjuːnɪˈkeɪʃənz/ 电信 4. gradual /ˈɡrædʒuəl/ 逐渐的 — gradually /ˈɡrædʒuəli/ 逐渐地 — graduate /ˈɡrædʒuət/ 毕业生 — graduation /ˌɡrædʒuˈeɪʃən/ 毕业 — gradualism /ˈɡrædʒuəlɪzəm/ 渐进主义 5. cover /ˈkʌvə/ 覆盖 — snow-covered /ˈsnəʊ ˌkʌvəd/ 被雪覆盖的 — uncovered /ʌnˈkʌvəd/ 未覆盖的 — discovery /dɪˈskʌvəri/ 发现 — discover /dɪˈskʌvə/ 发现 6. disappoint /ˌdɪsəˈpɔɪnt/ 使失望 — disappointed /ˌdɪsəˈpɔɪntɪd/ 失望的 — disappointing /ˌdɪsəˈpɔɪntɪŋ/ 令人失望的 — disappointment /ˌdɪsəˈpɔɪntmənt/ 失望 — disappointingly /ˌdɪsəˈpɔɪntɪŋli/ 令人失望地 7. tour /tʊə/ 旅游 — tourism /ˈtʊərɪzəm/ 旅游业 — tourist /ˈtʊərɪst/ 游客 — touristic /tʊəˈrɪstɪk/ 旅游的 — touring /ˈtʊərɪŋ/ 巡回的 8. rich /rɪtʃ/ 富有的 — riches /ˈrɪtʃɪz/ 财富 — enrich /ɪnˈrɪtʃ/ 使丰富 — enrichment /ɪnˈrɪtʃmənt/ 丰富 — richly /ˈrɪtʃli/ 丰富地 板块四:选词填空 Group A(从以下8个词汇中选择填空,每个词限用一次) 可选词汇:settle, river, population, gradually, gold, discover, wilderness, port 1. New York City, for example, grew gradually over 300 years. But not all cities develop so slowly. Some, known as boom towns, spring up almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson in Canada was an unmapped wilderness. But when gold was discovered there in 1897, it quickly became one of the largest cities in the West with a population of 30,000. Passage B Dawson was not a comfortable place to live. Necessities like food and wood were expensive. The path to the city was dangerous, covered with snow and ice, and avalanches were a constant threat. Yet thousands risked their lives to reach Dawson in search of gold. About one in five of the first 20,000 miners became rich, but most left with nothing. When new gold discoveries were reported in Alaska, people left Dawson as quickly as they had arrived. Passage C Today, Dawson is a shadow of its former self. Its population has fallen to just 762. The gold rush ended long ago, but the city survives on tourism. Visitors come to see where history was made and to experience the atmosphere of a bygone era. The story of Dawson serves as a reminder that boom towns can rise and fall with extraordinary speed. It also reminds us that natural resources are finite, and communities that depend too heavily on a single resource risk decline when that resource is exhausted. 板块八:单词默写(汉译英) 原因;理由 __________ 附近的 __________ 港口 __________ 河流 __________ 定居;解决 __________ 地方;地点 __________ 容易的 __________ 自然地 __________ 适合;适宜 __________ 交流;交通 __________ 贸易 __________ 海港 __________ 人口 __________ 逐渐地 __________ 新兴城市 __________ 一夜之间 __________ 未在地图上标明的 __________ 荒野 __________ 黄金 __________ 发现 __________ 被雪覆盖的 __________ 山 __________ 结冰的 __________ 雪崩 __________ 回报;奖励 __________ 必需品 __________ 拥挤的 __________ 失望的 __________ 旅游业 __________ 主要的;首要的 __________ 【参考答案】 板块一 真题再现答案 24.C 25.B 26.B 27. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich 26.B 事实细节题 根据第三段的 when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come 可知,当听说别的地方有金矿的时候,人们都迅速地离开了道森市。 板块四 选词填空答案 Group A settle port river population gradually Gold wilderness discovered Group B boom town overnight icy avalanche snow-covered reward 板块五 单词填空答案 A. 单句语法填空 naturally discovery crowded disappointed necessities avalanche's Gradually mountainous were rewarded Tourism B. 首字母单词拼写 population settlers wilderness dug avalanche reward crowded disappointed Tourism present 板块六 语篇翻译参考译文 Passage A 城市通常位于 自然适合 定居的地方,如港口或河流附近。 板块八 汉译英答案 reason nearby port river settle place easy naturally suit communication trade harbour population gradually boom town overnight unmapped wilderness gold discover snow-covered mountain icy avalanche reward necessity crowded disappointed tourism chief $
