Since our twins began learning to walk, my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding glass door is just a window. The reason is obvious. If we admit it is a door, they'll want to go outside constantly. It will drive us crazy. The kids apparently know the truth. But our insisting it's merely a window has kept them from attempting millions of requests to open the door.
I hate lying to the kids. One day they'll wake up and discover that everything they've always known about windows is a lie.
I wonder if parents should always tell the truth no matter the consequences. I have a very strong fear that the lie we're telling is doing spiritual damage to our children. Windows and doors have important metaphorical meanings. I'm telling them they can't open what they absolutely know is a door. What if later in life they come to a metaphorical door, like an opportunity of some sort, and instead of opening the door and taking the opportunity, they just stare at it and wonder, "What if it isn't a door?" That is, "What if it isn't a real opportunity?"
Maybe it's an unreasonable fear. But the bottom line is that I shouldn't lie to my kids. I should just accept repeatedly having to say, "No. We can't go outside now." Then when they come to other doors in life, be they real or metaphorical, they won't hesitate to open them and walk through.

Passage 1
A couple decided to tell their twins that the glass door was just a window. The reason was simple — they didn't want the children to constantly ask to go outside. The children seemed to know the truth, but the parents insisted it was merely a window to prevent them from attempting to open the door. The parents knew they were telling a lie and feared that one day the children would wake up and discover the truth. They wondered whether parents should always tell the truth, regardless of the consequences.
Passage 2
The father had a deep fear that the lie was causing spiritual damage to the children. Doors and windows carry important metaphorical meanings in life. He worried that if his children later encountered a metaphorical door — like an opportunity — they might stare at it and hesitate, wondering if it was real, instead of opening it and walking through. He realized that the bottom line was that he should never lie to his children. He needed to accept the difficulty of saying no and trust that his children would not hesitate to seize real opportunities.
Passage 3
Honesty is one of the most important values we can teach our children. When we tell a lie, we may think we are protecting them, but in reality, we are teaching them that the truth can be bent. The consequences of such a lesson can be far-reaching. Children who grow up with lies may hesitate to trust others, or they may stare at opportunities with doubt instead of embracing them. As parents, it is our responsibility to admit our own mistakes and model honesty. The bottom line is that a foundation of trust built on truth will serve children throughout their lives far better than any well-intentioned lie ever could.

Passage 1
Passage 2
Passage 3
