Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. They bring with them lots of waste. The crowds might damage the beauty of the place. The glaciers are disappearing, changing the face of Kilimanjaro.
Hearing these stories, I'm skeptical about the place — other destinations are described as "purer" natural experiences.
However, I soon discover that much has changed since the days of disturbing reports of camps among tons of rubbish. I find a clean mountain, with toilets at camps and along the paths. The environmental challenges are significant but the efforts made by the Tanzania National Park Authority seem to be paying off.
The best of a Kilimanjaro experience, in my opinion, isn't reaching the top. Mountains are regarded as spiritual places by many cultures. This view is especially evident on Kilimanjaro as climbers go through five ecosystems in the space of a few kilometers. At the base is a rainforest. It ends abruptly at 3,000 meters, giving way to lands of low growing plants. Further up, the weather changes — low clouds envelope the mountainsides, which are covered with thick grass. I count twelve shades of green from where I stand. Above 4,000 meters is the highland desert: gravel, stones and rocks. Finally you climb into an arctic-like zone with permanent snow and the glaciers that may soon disappear.
Does Kilimanjaro deserve its reputation as a crowded mountain with lines of tourists ruining the atmosphere of peace? I found the opposite to be true.

Passage 1
Every year, thousands of people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro. They bring waste with them, and the crowds may damage the beauty of the mountain. The glaciers are disappearing, changing the face of Kilimanjaro. Hearing these stories, I was skeptical about visiting the place. However, I soon discovered that much has changed. I found a clean mountain with toilets at camps. The environmental challenges are significant, but the efforts of the park authority are paying off.
Passage 2
In my opinion, the best part of a Kilimanjaro experience is not reaching the top. Mountains are regarded as spiritual places by many cultures. This view is especially true on Kilimanjaro, where climbers pass through five ecosystems. The rainforest gives way to low-growing plants, and then the weather changes again. From where I stand, I can count twelve shades of green. Above 4,000 meters is the highland desert. Finally, climbers reach a zone with permanent snow and glaciers.
Passage 3
Is Kilimanjaro a crowded mountain that deserves its reputation as a place where tourists ruin the peaceful atmosphere? I found the opposite to be true. The mountain is well-managed, and the natural beauty remains significant despite the large number of visitors. This experience taught me not to believe every negative report I hear. Sometimes, we need to see things for ourselves to discover the truth. The view from the top is not just about the scenery — it is about the journey itself. And the permanent memories we create along the way are worth every step.

Passage 1
Passage 2
Passage 3
