At the middle school level, there are many academic clubs in which students can participate. Students can choose clubs that focus on an area of interest.
Mathcounts Club
Mathcounts tries to increase excitement towards mathematics achievement. It hopes to provide students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Schools select individuals and teams to participate in competitions. Local competitions are held in February with winners progressing to state competitions and then on to the national level. Mathcounts works to challenge student math skills, develop self-confidence and give rewards for their achievements.
Envirothon
The Envirothon program focuses on natural resources knowledge and exposes students to diverse environmental issues, ecosystems, and topography. The ecology field competition for five-member middle school teams offers competitions in wildlife, soils, forestry, current environmental issues and aquatics. Students work and learn in middle school clubs and can compete at the local and state level.
Future Problem Solvers
Future Problem Solvers is an academic club that uses a six-step process to solve problems that may happen in the future. Students who are in the talented and gifted program, who like to “think out of the box,” or who enjoy thinking about futuristic problems may like this club. Teams comprised of four students read future scenes and write up solutions in a booklet using the six-step process. Teams that score high enough can go to the state competition and then to the international competition.
Builders Club
Builders Club is open to any middle school student who wishes to perform community service. Each Builders Club is co-sponsored by a Kiwanis club and the middle school. The members learn by doing, and they learn organization, teamwork, and leadership. Builders Clubs can sponsor a “Teacher of the Year” program, provide a recycling collection point, organize canned food and clothing drives to support local shelters, adopt a resident at a local senior citizens home, adopt a highway, tutor, etc. Middle school academic clubs offer students a place to explore interests or talents. The clubs they join in middle school can help guide choices in high school and beyond.
1. Why do some students choose Mathcounts Club?
A. To enjoying solving future problems. B. To be successful in science careers.
C. To study environmental issues. D. To perform community service.
2. What can we know about the Builders Club?
A. It is mainly sponsored by the middle school.
B. It only accepts students with excellent academic performance.
C. Its members can gain skills in organization, teamwork and leadership.
D. Its members mainly learn theoretical knowledge about community service.
3. What is the common feature of the four clubs?
A. Leadership. B. Problem-solving.
C. Teamwork. D. Creativity.

When people ask me now why I’m not an Instagram user, I usually give a general response like, “I’m not really a social media person.” But the true reasons are more complicated.
For a while, I quite liked this. I didn’t have to bother cultivating a perfect profile, and could enjoy a sense of moral superiority believing I didn’t buy into the same image-driven society as other teenagers. It’s true that I appeared to care less about popularity than some of my peers — if only because I’d always been on the outside loop. Admittedly, this may also be a reflection of my fixation on something else at school: studying. My satisfaction did not come from social media likes, but from teacher reports and test papers.
Yet, over time, I have also felt the negative effects of my lack of social media presence. At school, as at university, it partly contributed to my status as a wallflower. Above all, it was isolating. Aside from a small circle of friends (fortunately, extremely good ones), I felt that people generally did not know me, or even know of me, and I didn’t know them. Would Instagram have helped me make friends more easily?
Overall, I have a contradictory attitude towards my own lack of Instagram. In some ways, I feel that it has genuinely bettered my outlook on life, enabling me to resist constant comparison with others, but, at times, I have also felt it to be an unnecessary self-imposed social exclusion. The latter may reveal how deep-rooted social media has become in our times.
For better or for worse, I did take a different route. I never created a social media presence. I never posted photos. I never watched how many likes they got. Whichever path I might have gone down, there are positives and negatives to both. But this is the choice I took. And that has made all the difference.
4. What does the underlined word “wallflower” represent in Paragraph 3?
A. An outsider. B. An outgoing person.
C. A garden plant in spring. D. A flower growing on the wall.
5. Which may be the negative effect of using Instagram?
A. Making one isolated. B. Causing mental diseases.
C. Cultivating dependent personality. D. Causing constant comparisons with others.
6. Which may the author agree with?
A. Instagram is a must in social media age.
B. Social media play a vital role in our times.
C. Lack of social media makes people insecure.
D. Instagram improves mental and physical health.
7. Which can best describe the author?
A. Independent-minded. B. Old-fashioned.
C. Outgoing. D. Over-confident.
C
Burning oil, gas and coal — fuels that come from the remains of ancient plants and animals — releases carbon (碳) into Earth’s atmosphere, where it traps heat and changes the climate. That process has caused massive destruction and loss of life, and it will continue to do so. As a result, carbon is seen as a pollutant.
However, Paul Hawken argues in his new book Carbon: The Book of Life that both the thinking and the message of the climate movement are wrong. “Those who call carbon a pollutant should rethink what they are saying,” Hawken writes. “Carbon is the building block of life. Without it, Earth would just be a lonely, dead rock.”
Hawken believes that treating carbon as a pollutant not only misses what has caused climate change in the first place, but also further separates people from the living world. “There is no climate crisis, but a crisis of human thinking and behavior that’s damaging the soil, wiping out entire species, and changing the weather faster than people can adapt,” he argues. “The warming atmosphere is a response, a teaching.”
Hawken’s book is a lesson in what’s sometimes called “unlearning”, or letting go of old assumptions, like the idea that nature is something to fix or control. Instead, it explores ways to repair a broken relationship with the natural world by drawing inspiration from native cultures and new scientific discoveries.
First of all, Hawken wants a change in how people talk about the natural world. He describes the word “biodiversity” as “a bloodless term”. Even terms like “nature” are not proper for Hawken. He points out that such terms would only be needed if we are not a part of the living world.
The goal of the book is not to map out a plan for saving Earth, but to rebuild the relationship with it. “My community recently broke down a barrier under a bridge that had blocked the fish on their journey up the stream to give birth. The lesson from the project is about care,” Hawken writes. “That’s where we should start.”
8. According to Paul Hawken, carbon should be treated as ________.
A. a polluting element B. the result of burning fuels
C. a part of the living world D. the cause of climate change
9. What does Paul Hawken say about “biodiversity” and ”nature“?
A. They are not based on the latest discoveries.
B. They are helpful in fighting climate changes.
C. They are not easy for the public to understand.
D. They are misleading and should be abandoned.
10. What does Paul Hawken suggest people do in his new book?
A. “Unlearn” to co-exist with nature. B. Find ways to control nature.
C. Return to traditional ways of living. D. Fix the problems scientifically.
11. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A new book. B. A book review.
C. An advertisement. D. An environment report.
D
To keep a Hula-Hoop aloft (悬浮) with robots, it helps to be in shape — literally. Experiments with hoop-slinging robots have revealed how these rings stay up despite the pull of gravity. The shape of the robot’s body is a crucial factor, researchers report in the Jan. 7 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The shape needs to have “hips” — a slope (斜面) that provides upward force to balance gravity. And a “waist” arch — like an hourglass (沙漏) — keeps the hoop from moving up or down and sliding off.
Inspired by performers near his home in Greenwich Village, applied mathematician Leif Ristroph of New York University began considering the physics of Hula-Hoops. Previous studies, he and his coworkers realized, hadn’t explained how the hoop stays aloft.
So Ristroph and his coworkers gave it a try. In experiments, a circling cylindrical robot couldn’t keep a hoop from sliding down. It was missing the essential upward force, generated when a hoop swings over a sloped shape. But a cone-shaped robot, with a slope but no waistlike curve, also failed. If the hoop began toward the top of the cone, the upward force overpowered gravity, and the hoop would move up. If the hoop began toward the bottom, the upward force wasn’t enough to keep it aloft, and it moved down. But an hourglass-shaped robot kept a hoop stably aloft.
People should be able to hula-hoop regardless of the body shape, by adapting their gyrations (旋转) based on position changes of the hoop. Indeed, the researchers were able to get a cone-shaped robot to hula-hoop by adjusting the rate of gyration depending on how high the hoop slid.
A correct launch was also essential in the experiments. If the hoop started off too slow, the attempt would fail. In successful sessions, the hoop lined up with the gyrating body, so that the hoop and the body always shifted in the same direction. “That’s also the best way to launch a hoop,” Ristroph says.
“We were surprised that an activity as popular, fun, and healthy as hula hooping wasn’t understood even at a basic physics level,” says Ristroph. “As we made progress on the research, we realized that the math and physics involved are very subtle.”
12. Which body shape is ideal for Hula-Hooping according to the experiment?
A. Cone-shaped. B. Hourglass-shaped. C. Round. D. Cylindrical.
13. What is the message implied in the fourth paragraph?
A. Hula-hooping can help shape people’s body gradually.
B. Robots are flexible in learning human body movements.
C. Anyone can do hula-hooping by adjusting their movements.
D. A perfect body shape is required to be a good hula-hoop player.
14. What was essential for a successful Hula-Hoop launch in the experiments?
A. Starting with the right shape. B. Opposite movement of the hoop and the body.
C. Using a hoop of the proper size. D. Same directional shifts of the hoop and the body.
15. Which can be used as a proper title for the text?
A. Scientists Identify the Perfect Hula Hoop “Body Type”
B. Hula-hooping Inspires NYU Mathematicians
C. How Do Hula Hoops Benefit Our Health?
D. What Do Hula Hoops Do for Your Body?

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Class, quiet please!” Ms. Tan, our teacher, called out with her arms crossed, annoyed by the noise we were making. Once the class quieted down, she continued, “Today we have a new student joining us. His name is Luke Orye! As you know, today is the first day of this school year. He is a transfer (转学) student from Sunnyfield Primary School. I hope you will help him feel comfortable in school.” All of our faces lit up. None of us had had a transfer student before! I gave Luke a friendly smile and waved from my seat. He saw it and gave a tight smile back. He lowered his head to keep his eyes fixed on the ground. I also noticed that he was nervous.
Just then, I realized something. “Oh no, Mike is going to bother Luke. A shy guy like Luke might not handle it well,” I thought. Mike was known for being mischievous (调皮). He would behave properly when teachers were watching, but act up as soon as they weren’t looking. Every student found his behavior annoying because he loved to play tricks on others.
When the bell rang for a break, I raced over to talk to Luke about Mike. However, Luke was out of the door before I could open my mouth. “He probably wants some fresh air,” I thought as I sighed and slowly walked towards the courtyard.
On my way, I saw Mike approaching Luke with a mischievous grin (咧嘴笑). “Why so quiet? Cat got your tongue?” Mike joked, pushing Luke playfully. Luke looked uncomfortable and shifted his weight nervously. Mike laughed heartily and clapped Luke on the back, thinking he was just having some fun.
As luck would have it, Ms. Tan walked by! She was the teacher on duty in the courtyard that day. Mike quickly composed himself and put on his best behavior. Luke and I exchanged worried glances. I wanted to tell Ms. Tan what happened but hesitated. “Should I get involved? This could blow up in my face,” I thought. But then I remembered how Luke looked — like he needed someone to stick up for him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to Ms. Tan.

【答案】Dear Peter,
I heard you’re hesitating about the open-air concert next Saturday because of your unfamiliarity with the local traffic. I strongly suggest you go. It’s a rare chance to enjoy live music outdoors, which will surely relieve your stress. Besides, many famous bands will perform, and you love rock music.
As for the traffic, don’t worry. I can pick you up at your dormitory at 5:30, and we can take the subway together. Being only a 5-minute walk from the station, the concert venue is highly convenient. We can get there early to find good spots.
Let’s meet at 6 p.m. sharp. I’m sure we’ll have a great time. Looking forward to your positive reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】例文
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to Ms. Tan. My heart pounded with a mix of fear and determination. “Ms. Tan.” I began, my voice trembling slightly, “I think Mike is bothering Luke. He was joking around, but Luke looked really uncomfortable.” Ms. Tan’s eyes narrowed as she scanned the courtyard, quickly spotting Mike and Luke standing together. Without hesitation, she marched over, her stern voice cutting through the air. “Mike, come with me. We need to talk.” As Mike followed Ms. Tan, I watched relief wash over Luke’s face. I approached him and whispered, “Don’t worry, he won’t bother you again.”
A few minutes later, Mike returned, his face red with shame. After Ms. Tan’s serious talk with him, he finally realized his mistakes. To everyone’s surprise, Mike sincerely apologized to Luke, his voice trembling with regret. Luke, with a nod and an extended hand, accepted the apology. From that day on, the three of us became inseparable. We spent lunch breaks sharing stories of our old schools, and worked together to help Luke adjust to his new environment. That experience taught us all a valuable lesson: standing up for others and allowing room for growth can turn conflict into lasting friendship.
