Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done”. That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren’t many around — all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (功能) wasn’t powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming (编程) to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interests in computer programming and languages. “I’m planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”
4.What do we know about Noah?
A.He began to learn Chinese at 11. B.He failed his first Chinese exam.
C.He likes teaching Chinese to people. D.He gets a lot from learning Chinese.
5.What are included in Noah’s app?
A.Advertisements. B.Pieces of world news.
C.Suggestions for memorizing words. D.Ways of writing Chinese characters.
6.What has Noah decided to do shortly after high school graduation?
A.Look for a job. B.Attend university.
C.Develop a new app. D.Learn more languages.
7.Which of the following can best describe Noah?
A.Humorous and honest. B.Curious and creative.
C.Courageous and caring. D.Outgoing and kind.
C
Most of us probably feel that learning a new language is difficult, even if that new language is similar to our own. So how challenging is it to learn English, especially if your first language is quite different?
The most common complaint language learners make about English is that the spelling of words is baffling. They often have little or nothing to do with their pronunciation. It’s easy enough to teach someone how to write the letter “a”, for example, but then they must be taught that pronunciation changes in words like hat, hate and father. And in oak it isn’t pronounced at all.
Another area of difficulty that learners of English often comment on is the prevalence (普遍) of irregular verbs in English. It’s simple to remember that the past tense of walk is walked and pick is picked. But what about all the irregular verbs, like read and think? For read, the past tense looks the same, but is pronounced differently. For think, the past tense thought involves (包含) great change to both the spelling and the pronunciation.
There’s not always a pattern (模式) to many of these irregular verbs. For verbs ending with “ink” we have think/thought, but another irregular pattern drink / drank. English has several hundred such irregular verbs for learners to look forward to memorising.
A difficulty has something to do with how English speakers show politeness. Some languages have quite clear ways for their users to do this. In French you can use the pronoun vous instead of tu to be polite. English only has you, so that doesn’t work. In Japanese you can use polite forms of words, so that although kuu, taberu and meshiagaru all mean “to eat” in Japanese, the longer words are more polite.
In English we can use longer words: “Would you like to consume nourishment?” instead of “Would you like to eat?” but instead of being polite, it sounds rather strange.
So spare a thought for those picking up an English textbook for the first time—mastering the language is difficult.
8.What does the underlined word “baffling” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Interesting B.Confusing C.Important D.Traditional
9.What does the author think of irregular verbs in English?
A.Many of them have the same pattern.
B.Many of them have changed over time.
C.They are difficult for learners to memorize.
D.They are used more commonly than regular ones.
10.What does the author want to show by giving French and Japanese examples in Paragraph 5?
A.It might be hard to show politeness in English in a clear way.
B.There are many ways to be polite when speaking English.
C.English and other languages have similar ways to show politeness.
D.It’s important to be polite when we speak English and other languages.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Why is learning English challenging?
B.Where English words come from?
C.Why do English words have so many forms?
D.How is English different from other languages?
D
When I tell people I’m learning Chinese and Italian, they often look surprised. It annoys me that I can’t easily answer their unspoken questions: “Why do you learn languages you have no personal connection to? Why do you spend hours studying languages spoken by people far away? ”
In my freshman year, I started Italian on a whim (一时兴起). Now, I’m preparing to study at an Italian university. When I worry about not being ready, I watch old Italian movies. I understand little of the dialogue, but the parts I catch mean a lot to me. Like in the film Umberto D., where a main character—an old man, says, “Everyone takes advantage of the ignorant (无知的).” These small moments of understanding hit me hard.
As a boy, growing up with Filipino and American parents in Hong Kong, I’m used to language barriers (障碍). Cantonese, the language of my home, is still hard for me. But small moments of connection through languages feel special. As Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his mother tongue, that goes to his heart.”
The more I think about “why” learn languages, the more I realize it’s about “how”. Learning a language makes it easy for you to make mistakes and feel embarrassed. Sometimes, this makes me want to stick with English. But then I watch an Italian film and hear some new words and conversations that wouldn’t be possible without my efforts. I wouldn’t feel the connection without falling many times. I’ve learned that however fluent you may think you are, there is no finish line in learning a language. And that’s what keeps me pushing forward in my language journey.
12.How does the author find about people’s questions?
A.They are difficult to explain. B.They are easy to answer.
C.They make him comfortable. D.They encourage him in a way.
13.What does the author do when feeling worried about studying in Italy?
A.Practice English more. B.Turn to an old man.
C.Watch Italian films. D.Speak with Italians.
14.Why does the author mention what Mandela said?
A.To prove the difficulty in understanding.
B.To give the solutions to language barriers.
C.To say the existence of cultural differences.
D.To show the importance of feeling connected.
15.What does the author think of learning a language?
A.It helps one avoid mistakes. B.It is an endless process.
C.It is a short-term project. D.It takes fewer efforts.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Words are without a doubt the basic elements, the bricks of a language. Learning new words is a serious challenge for many language learners. 16 . For some, it is a real obsession (痴迷). Quite often, these efforts are met with disappointment and frustration.
17 . In general, the brain tends to select the information that it receives, discarding (丢弃) what it considers unnecessary. Imagine remembering every single detail that enters your brain. You would remember thousands of words effortlessly, but would also pay a terrible price. 18 . Fortunately, the brain has a natural way of organizing and sorting information, which helps us manage it better.
In fact, forgetting information is a good thing. 19 . Language learners want to remember as many words as possible, and they often cannot. They come to the conclusion that they simply do not have a good memory or that language learning is too difficult for them.
But how can we improve our ability to remember new words? Memory works like a muscle — it becomes weaker if not used regularly. Just like any skill, if you don’t practice it, your ability to keep information weakens over time. 20 . If you want your memory to work well, make it work a little bit every day. The repetition of an operation has a cumulative (累积的) effect whose main goal is to force information into our brains without putting in so much effort.
A.A sea of words feels strange in your brain
B.It allows the brain to let go of less important details
C.Your brain would hardly focus on what really matters
D.So the best way to improve memory is to repeat continuously
E.Reading these words opens a window for you to another world
F.Memorizing new words seems a difficult task for many reasons
G.However, learning lots of words fast is a dream for every language learner

“I can’t believe it,” Lin whispered, staring at the English test paper in her hands — 60 out of 150. In junior high, she’d been the class “English star,” always topping the exam rankings. Back then, English had been her pride. She never struggled with it. She talked with foreign teachers fluently without hesitation after class.
But now, as a first-year high school student at this top-tier school, the first English exam felt like a cold shower. The long reading passages blurred before her eyes, and the grammar fill-in-the-blanks that once seemed easy now looked like a totally new language. The numbers on the paper seemed to laugh at her. That evening, Lin pushed the test paper into the bottom of her schoolbag, fearing her parents’ disappointment. In the following days, the bad feeling was always around her. In the weeks that followed, Lin became a “silent learner” — hiding behind her textbook in class, copying every word the teacher said into her notebook, and staying up late memorizing vocabulary lists. She avoided the teacher’s eyes in class and buried herself in note-taking. But the harder she pushed alone, the more difficult the questions seemed.
One rainy afternoon, as Lin sat alone in the canteen, her English teacher, Miss Zhou, appeared. “Mind if I join you?” she asked. Lin’s heart sank, ready for criticism (批评). Instead, Miss Zhou said, “I’ve noticed you work very hard. But sometimes, the way we learn needs to change when we come into a new stage.” Miss Zhou took out a small notebook across the table.“My senior-year notes,” she smiled.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
“I wasn’t always good at English either,” she patted Lin on the shoulder.

With Miss Zhou’s encouragement, Lin felt confident again.

第三部分 写作(共两节, 满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Dear classmates,
I’m glad to have a chance to share my English learning experience with you.
For me, consistency is key. I read English articles daily, listen to podcasts during breaks, and practice speaking! I also keep a vocabulary notebook where I write down new words with example sentences, which helps me remember them better.
Here are two suggestions: First, don’t be afraid of making mistakes — every error is a step toward improvement. Second, try to use English in real life, like labeling objects at home or chatting with classmates in English. The more you use it, the more natural it becomes.
Keep practicing, and you’ll surely see progress!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【答案】
“I wasn’t always good at English either,” she patted Lin on the shoulder. “When I first entered high school, long sentences gave me a headache and grammar rules seemed complex,” Miss Zhou said, flipping open the notebook filled with colorful mind maps, sorted grammar mistakes and new words paired with sentences. Lin stared, eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Instead of keeping everything down, mind maps and mistake collections keep notes organized for better reflection. Also, try to learn words in sentences. I am sure you can make progress soon.” Miss Zhou added, as light broke through the glass.
With Miss Zhou’s encouragement, Lin felt confident again. Determined to follow Miss Zhou’s way, she began to write three sentences each evening with new words and even kept a small English diary. Gradually, the confusing passages became clearer, and grammar rules started to make sense with the application of mind maps and sorted mistakes. A familiar sense of achievement welling up in her heart, she realized that effective learning wasn’t about endless memorisation, but about using smart methods. A long-lost smile returned to her face as she found her way forward.

【答案】8.B 9.C 10.A 11.A
【知识点】语言学习策略、说明文
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了学习英语为何具有挑战性,包括拼写、不规则动词及礼貌表达等方面的困难。
8.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“The most common complaint language learners make about English is that the spelling of words is baffling. They often have little or nothing to do with their pronunciation.(语言学习者对英语最常见的抱怨,就是英语单词的拼写baffling。单词的拼写往往和发音没什么关系,甚至完全不相关。)”可知,单词的拼写常常与发音关系不大或毫无关系,这会让学习者感到困惑,因此baffling的意思是“令人困惑的”。故选B。
9.细节理解题。根据第四段中“There’s not always a pattern to many of these irregular verbs.(许多不规则动词并不总是有规律可循。)”以及“English has several hundred such irregular verbs for learners to look forward to memorising.(英语中有几百个这样的不规则动词需要学习者去记忆。)”可知,作者认为英语中的不规则动词对于学习者来说很难记忆。故选C。
10.推理判断题。根据第五段中“A difficulty has something to do with how English speakers show politeness. Some languages have quite clear ways for their users to do this. In French you can use the pronoun vous instead of tu to be polite. English only has you, so that doesn’t work. In Japanese you can use polite forms of words , so that although kuu , taberu and meshiagaru all mean “to eat” in Japanese, the longer words are more polite.(还有一个难点和英语使用者如何表达礼貌有关。有些语言有非常明确的礼貌表达方式:法语中可以用代词“vous”代替“tu”来表示礼貌;英语里只有“you”,所以这行不通。日语中有单词的礼貌形式——比如“kuu”、“taberu”、“meshiagaru” 都表示“吃”,但单词越长,礼貌程度越高。)”可知,作者想通过法语和日语的例子说明用英语清晰明了地表达礼貌之意或许并非易事。故选A。
11.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“So how challenging is it to learn English, especially if your first language is quite different?(那么,学习英语到底有多难呢?尤其是如果你的母语与英语截然不同的话?)”可知,文章主要讲述了学习英语为何具有挑战性。“Why is learning English challenging?(为什么学习英语具有挑战性?)”符合题意。故选A。
【答案】12.A 13.C 14.D 15.B

【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述了作者学习中文和意大利文的个人经历与感悟,强调语言学习的意义在于连接人心,而非仅仅达到流利。文中通过回忆和具体事例,如准备在意大利大学学习、观看意大利电影以及引用纳尔逊·曼德拉的话,表达了语言障碍背后的小瞬间所带来的深刻联系感,同时传达了语言学习是一个没有终点的过程。
【详解】12.细节理解题。由文章第一段“When I tell people I’m learning Chinese and Italian, they often look surprised. It annoys me that I can’t easily answer their unspoken questions: “Why do you learn languages you have no personal connection to? Why do you spend hours studying languages spoken by people far away? ” (当我告诉别人我正在学习汉语和意大利语时,他们通常看起来很惊讶。让我烦恼的是,我不能轻易回答他们那些没有说出口的问题:“你为什么要学习与你没有个人联系的语言?”你为什么要花几个小时学习远方的人说的语言?”)”可知,作者不能轻易回答人们的问题,这让他感到烦恼。因此,作者觉得这些问题很难解释。故选A。
13.细节理解题。根据第二段中“When I worry about not being ready, I watch old Italian movies. (当我担心自己没有准备好的时候,我会看意大利老电影。)”可知,当作者对在意大利学习感到担忧时,会看意大利电影。故选C。

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】One possible version:
Yours,
Li Hua

Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make sure yours builds up.
Watch movies
“If you see the movie version of your favourite book you’re likely to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the words in it,” says Neuman, professor of Childhood and Literacy Education at New York University. “Seeing and reading something on the same topic is really important.”
Read magazines
If you want to improve vocabulary, don’t just flip through your favorite magazine, really read it.
Listen to how words sound
Many people won’t remember tricky words unless they come across them frequently. But if you hear a word that you think sounds interesting, you become word conscious (有意识的) and start using it yourself, says Neuman.
Join a book club
“Book clubs are a wonderful strategy to learn new words,” says Neuman. Not only will it force you to set aside time in your day to read, but it’s also a good way to discover books you might not normally be drawn to.
Listen to the radio
Those types of programs can expose you to topics you may not be familiar with. Don’t miss these middle school vocabulary words adults still don’t know.
Pay attention to your surroundings
Next time walk down a busy street or take a walk in the park, try to describe what you’re seeing as much as possible inside your head.
Read, read, read
Even if you don’t stop to look up every single foreign word, chances are you can improve vocabulary simply by figuring out (想出) their meaning based on the context.
