Dear Allen,
I’m sorry to hear you’re finding high school science tough. Don’t feel discouraged — many students face this challenge at the start, so you’re not alone.
Here are two practical tips. First, focus on mastering basic concepts. If you get stuck on a topic, ask your teacher or classmates for help immediately instead of letting confusion build up. Second, do regular, targeted practice. Start with simple problems to build confidence, then gradually tackle more difficult ones.
I’m sure with patience and effort, you’ll make steady progress. Wish you all the best in your studies!
Yours,
Li Hua
Eventually, I ranked first in the mid-exam, expecting cheers and congratulations. However, the classroom remained unusually quiet when the results were announced. A few classmates offered polite smiles, but most simply turned back to their own papers. The applause I had dreamed of was absent, replaced by an awkward silence. My victory felt empty, like a star shining in an empty sky. Later, I overheard Josh talking to George by the lockers. “Why should we cheer for him? He wouldn’t even spare an afternoon for the relay race.” Their words struck me deeply, and for the first time, I started to question whether grades truly were the only way to win respect.
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. Mr. White was grading papers but looked up warmly. “Vik, I saw the results — well done academically.” Before I could thank him, I confessed my confusion, “But why does being first feel so lonely?” Mr. White put down his pen. “True recognition isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about shared joy. Remember the relay? That was a chance to stand with your class, not above them.” He handed me the trophy our class had just won in the relay race. “They managed without you, but they wanted you there. Respect is earned by lifting others, not by standing alone.” His words finally broke through my stubbornness, and I understood what I had missed.

Zach, a fourth grader, sits alone in the school cafeteria. At break, he skirts the edges (边缘) of the playground, not joining in. He doesn’t play sports, so he doesn’t mix well with the other boys in his class. His mother is concerned about that.
At most schools, this child might become lonely and even sad. But at Graham Elementary School in Naperville, Illinois, teachers moved him around to different groups for class projects until he clicked with another boy.
“Suddenly, Zach had a best friend. They would hang out together, and help each other with homework,” says Zach’s mother.
Sue Clendening, the principal of Graham Elementary, believes that friendships are just as important as schoolwork. For years she had watched children get their feelings hurt at break and they couldn’t focus on their lessons afterward. Two years ago, she decided to do something about it.
Clendening surveyed the students to learn who had friends and who didn’t. She found that 30 percent of the children in fourth grade said they were often alone on the playground because no one wanted to play with them. Some students even wrote their own names on the survey under the question, “Who most needs a friend?”
Clendening shared the survey results with her teachers. She flagged lonely kids and got teachers to put them in groups of children where they might make friends. The school also started after-school clubs like book club and chess club so that children could find like-minded people. Each week, a lunch group brings together shy children and more social children to talk with a social worker.
“I believe social skills can be taught the same way math can be taught,” says Clendening. “A growing body of research points to social skills being as important as academic (学业的) skills for future success.”
24.Why does Zach’s mother feel concerned?
A.He has trouble making friends. B.He forms the habit of playing outside.
C.He prefers to go to school alone. D.He spends too much time on homework.
25.What did Clendening’s survey show?
A.Some students were left out and felt lonely.
B.Few children had an interest in school activities.
C.Most children were unhappy with their grades,
D.30 percent of students wanted to play in groups.
26.What is paragraph.6 mainly about?
A.How the children feel about social ties. B.How the teachers share the survey results.
C.How the school draws out lonely kids. D.How the social workers help shy children.
27.What do Clendening’s words suggest?
A.She pays more attention to math lessons. B.Friendship building can hardly be taught.
C.Academic skills are the key to one’s success. D.She values social skills as part of education.

The University of Rochester’s new textbook program, UR Essentials, started in the Fall 2025 semester. This program provides all required textbooks to every full-time undergraduate student, with the cost included in tuition .
Before UR Essentials, students had to find and pay for their books themselves. Now, the university gives them all necessary books, either physical (实体的) or digital, at the beginning of the semester. Physical books are packaged for students to pick up, and digital materials are delivered through online learning platforms like Blackboard. At the end of the term, students can return the physical books or buy them at a lower price. However, some items like lab goggles and art supplies are not included in the program.
The university says the program helps students get ready for their classes on time by removing financial barriers. Sara Miller, a university spokesperson, explained that UR Essentials ensures students have their materials from the first day of class without extra cost. This helps avoid delays caused by money problems or confusion about which books to buy .
The first semester of the program had both successes and challenges. Some students saved money and received their books smoothly. However, not all professors submitted (提交) their book lists on time, so some students had to wait for their materials or buy books on their own. Some students also found the program emails confusing at first .
Despite these early problems, student leaders like Alexa Rosenbloom call the program “a huge win” for making textbooks more affordable. The university will use feedback from students and teachers to improve UR Essentials for the future .
28.What is the main purpose of the UR Essentials program?
A.To sell textbooks to students at a lower price.
B.To provide required textbooks to students through tuition.
C.To encourage students to use more digital books.
D.To help professors choose better textbooks.
29.According to the text, what can students do with physical textbooks at the end of the semester?
A.They must return them to the bookstore.
B.They can either return them or buy them permanently.
C.They are required to keep them for future classes.
D.They can sell them to other students.
30.The word “barriers” in Paragraph 3 most likely means ______.
A.choices B.advantages
C.challenges D.rules
31.What is Alexa Rosenbloom’s attitude towards the UR Essentials program?
A.She is against it because of the initial problems.
B.She feels sorry that it causes confusion among students.
C.She believes it is very good for students.
D.She thinks it requires further discussion before continuing.

Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
32.Which of the following represents (代表) a fixed mindset?
A.I’m at the starting point of my ability. B.My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C.I should start studying a little earlier next time. D.It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
33.What might the author encourage parents to do?
A.To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B.To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C.To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D.To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
34.What is the third weapon mainly about?
A.Enjoying good health. B.Owning the ability to say no.
C.Balancing schoolwork and play. D.Developing time management skills.
35.Which one is the best title of the passage?
A.Making friends in High School
B.Academic Challenges in High School
C.Differences between Middle School and High School
D.Preparations for High School: What you need to know

As a teenager, I longed for popularity among my class. The desire to stand out consumed me. Toby’s raised hands always lit up teachers’ eyes. Josh, the basketball star, pulled cheers from the crowd with every shot. And George could walk into a silent room and start conversations with everyone around him. I envied them all.
“Maybe I would be visible when I climbed my way to the top of every exam ranking,” I thought. To stand out academically, I doubled my effort. I spent every minute trying to be number one. Whenever classmates asked for help, I would close my textbook and lie. “Sorry, I don’t get it either,” terrified they would outperform me.
Mr. White, our head teacher, noticed. “Real respect grows when you lift others up, Vik.” But I dismissed his words and still believed grades were my only currency.
The school was organizing a relay race for the upcoming sports day, and our class was making the team. The monitor turned to me with hopeful eyes. “Vik, you have to be on our team!” But I shook my head, “No way, I can’t afford to waste time on that. I have studies to do.” He tried to reason, “It’s just one afternoon, and it’s for the class!” Yet I stood firm, my mind fixed on my academic goals.
Mr. White saw the whole exchange and called me aside, “Vik, life isn’t just about books and grades. The relay isn’t just a race; it’s a chance to build teamwork.” I was too blind to see his point.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

注意:

【答案】28.B 29.B 30.C 31.C

This program provides all required textbooks to every full-time undergraduate student, with the cost included in tuition .( 罗切斯特大学的新教材项目UR Essentials于2025年秋季学期启动。
根据第二段中“At the end of the term, students can return the physical books or buy them at a lower price. However, some items like lab goggles and art supplies are not included in the program.( 在学期结束时,学生可以退回实体书或以更低的价格购买。然而,一些项目,如实验室护目镜和美术用品不包括在该计划中。)”可知,学期末学生对实体教材可“选择归还或购买”。故选B项。
30.词义猜测题。根据第三段划线单词句中“The university says the program helps students get ready for their classes on time by removing financial….( 该大学表示,该项目通过消除经济……,帮助学生按时备课。)”
根据最后一段中“Despite these early problems, student leaders like Alexa Rosenbloom call the program “a huge win” for making textbooks more affordable.( 尽管早期存在这些问题,但像Alexa Rosenbloom这样的学生领袖称该项目是“一个巨大的胜利”,因为它让教科书变得更便宜。)”

D.Preparations for High School: What you need to know
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.D 35.D
根据第二段“People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak.(拥有固定思维倾向的人认为他们生来就是厉害或弱小的)”可知,固定思维倾向是把人的能力归为与生俱来的。
根据第三段“The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades.(第二个武器是健康均衡的饮食。研究表明,每天吃营养食物和锻炼60分钟的学生在上学期间注意力更集中,学习成绩和成绩也有所提高)”可知,作者认为健康均衡的饮食很重要,可以帮助孩子们改善学习表现。因此,作者会鼓励家长为他们的孩子准备健康的食物。故选A项。
根据第三段中“This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.(最后这一“秘密”策略就是不要过度安排时间。要确保学生们懂得如何制定切实可行的计划,以及如何拒绝那些对他们而言不重要的任务和活动)”可知,第三个武器主要是培养时间管理技能,合理安排时间。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,并根据第一段“Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.(从初中升入高中可能会很困难,因为学生们会面临新的学业和社交方面的挑战。在高中开学的第一天之前,每一位即将升入高中的新生及其家人都应该了解一些事情)”可知,文章主要为每个即将进入高中的新生和他们的家人介绍了一些应该知道的事情。D选项“高中入学准备:你需要了解的内容”最符合文章标题。故选D项。

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Changing schools means leaving behind your old school, friends, and neighborhood. Some students think it’s not a big deal. But for others, fitting into a new school with new people is not easy. 36 . In this case, the following tips will help make this easier.
Know your environment
It is necessary to know your environment to feel at ease in your new school. Familiarize yourself with your school, especially your classroom, since you will spend most of your time there. 37 .
Interact (互动)
The pressure to socialize and make friends is high when you change schools. But don’t let that stop you. Don’t try to make friends on the first day. Instead, try to interact with lots of people. To do this, be active. 38 . Move on if you find common interests with them. Then you can meet them outside to hang out.
Be yourself
39 . Stay true to yourself, and the right people will get close to you. People will notice you if you’re confident, kind and friendly. You can try a few things, like showing off your skills, to attract people. But don’t do anything unusual or too loud. Also, don’t worry too much about what people think about you.
40 .
By joining clubs, sports teams, or other group events, you can meet people who share similar interests. This helps you build friendships quickly and feel more connected. Don’t be shy. Just stay open to new experiences, and you’ll soon feel like part of a group and finally part of your new school.
A.Take part in group activities
B.It is slow, painful and frightening
C.Communicate with like-minded classmates
D.Don’t be afraid of making mistakes on campus
E.If you know where everything is, you will feel comfortable
F.Whenever there is a chance, start a conversation with others
G.Changing yourself is the worst thing to do when you try to fit into a new school

37.根据本段小标题“Know your environment”和前面的“Familiarize yourself with your school, especially your classroom, since you will spend most of your time there.(熟悉你的学校,尤其是你的教室,因为你大部分时间都会在那里度过。)”
38.根据本段小标题“Interact (互动)”和前文“Instead, try to interact with lots of people. To do this, be active.(相反,试着与很多人互动。要做到这一点,要积极主动。)”可知,前面讲述了要积极主动地多和人互动,后文“Move on if you find common interests with them.(如果你发现和他们有共同的兴趣,就更进一步。)”
40.空处是本段小标题,根据下文“By joining clubs, sports teams, or other group events, you can meet people who share similar interests.(通过加入俱乐部、运动队或其他团体活动,你可以结识有着相似兴趣的人。)” 故选A。

Dear Allen,
I’m sorry to hear you’re finding high school science tough.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
