When he left the hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, the USA. But when he was there, he did things in a different way. For example, he didn’t like the doctors’ white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients and he tried to make them laugh. The doctors at the medical school didn’t like Adams because he was too different. But Adams believed that people in hospital need more than medicine. He saw unhappy and lonely people, and he tried to help them. He spent a lot of time with children in hospital and often dressed up like a clown to make the children laugh. When he finished medical school and became a doctor, Adams opened his own hospital, called “The Gesundheit Institute”, together with some other doctors. They wanted it to be a place with a different way of working with sick people. Hunter Adams became famous during the 1980s, and in 1998, Universal Pictures made a film about his life. It was also a thing I believed I needed to do with a partner. Years passing by, I realized this habit of saying “I’ll be happy when…” is far more damaging than it seems on the surface. In our pursuit (追求) of happiness, we end up postponing joy. We put off trips until we have the right partner to go with. But then as we scroll through our social media feed, it feels like everyone else is living life while we’re just sitting on the sidelines. I decided to stop waiting for happiness. In 2019, I booked a New Year’s trip to Iceland — by myself. What do you think happened when I finally took that trip to Iceland after nearly 10 years of thinking about it? I found joy! I watched the fireworks explode over Reykjavik with three generations of Icelanders. I ate fish and chips and scribbled (草草地写) in my journal. I booked a trip to Snaefellsnes, which ended with hot chocolate and singing carols (颂) with a crowd of farmers in a hotel. And the highlight of this trip was seeing the Northern Lights, which were more magical than I had imagined. What I’ve learned about leaning into the present rather than waiting for the future is that something unexpected always happens. Sometimes it’s adventure, and then you’re left with memories you never would’ve had if you’d just waited for happiness to find you. Other times, you find new friends, new opportunities, new inspiration — things that may actually help you get to the happiness you’re seeking faster or help you uncover a new definition of happiness. Now, when I catch myself saying some version of “I’ll be happy when…” I try to imagine myself in the future, looking back on right now and asking myself: what are you waiting for? 34. What was the author like at first? A. She hated to travel by herself. B. She desired to have an ideal partner. C. She valued her family above her friends. D. She disliked sharing her vacations online. 35. What does the underlined word “postponing” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Creating. B. Destroying. C. Waiting. D. Putting off. 36. What did the author think was most impressive during her trip to Iceland? A. Seeing the Northern Lights. B. Trying various kinds of local cuisine. C. Celebrating New Year with Icelanders D. Spending lime in a hotel in Snaefellsnes. 37. What did the author learn from her Iceland trip? A. A joy that’s shared is a joy made double. B. Happiness doesn’t depend on what happens. C. Don’t wait for happiness to come; just live life in the present. D. Don’t rely on others for your happiness; create it on your own. 38. How does the author now handle thoughts of “I’ll be happy when…”? A. They immediately book another international trip. B. They imagine their future self regretting present inaction. C. They post on social media to seek travel companions. D. They lower their expectations to avoid disappointment. B 35. D 36. A 37. C 38. 根据“I’ll be happy when I finally find someone who will go to Iceland with me. It was also a thing I believed I needed to do with a partner.” 根据“We put off trips until we have the right partner to go with.” 根据“And the highlight of this trip was seeing the Northern Lights, which were more magical than I had imagined.” 故选A。 根据“What I’ve learned about leaning into the present rather than waiting for the future is that something unexpected always happens.” 根据“Now, when I catch myself saying some version of “I’ll be happy when...” I try to imagine myself in the future, looking back on right now and asking myself: what are you waiting for?” B。 D In the United States, most of our electricity comes from power plants (发电厂) that burn coal and oil. There are two big problems with using these things for electricity. First, their supply is limited. Second, burning them causes pollution. So to make sure we always have power and to keep our planet clean, we must find other ways to make electricity. Some people think that wind power is our best choice. First, there will always be more wind. Also, wind power does not pollute the environment. Best of all, we don’t have to search for wind. Today, less than 1 percent of our electricity comes from wind. But scientists have been developing better wind machines. As a result, wind power is getting more popular in this country. Yet wind power may not keep growing so quickly in years to come. Why not? Many wind turbines (风力涡轮机) are needed to make much electricity. So wind-power companies try to build wind farms but are competing with other uses for the land. A wind farm is a group of turbines placed close together in an area with frequent winds. In places where companies try to build wind farms, people think that lines of turbines are ugly. Noise from turbines often troubles people. Also, turbines kill birds that fly into them. Wind-power supporters disagree. They think the sight of wind turbines is lovely. They point out that people have gotten used to living near noisy highways. They say ways can be found to keep birds away from turbines. In today’s world, we need clean and unlimited power sources more than ever. Unless a better power source comes along, people may just have to accept wind power as a part of their lives. 39. The underlined part “these things” in the second paragraph refers to ________. A. frequent winds B. coal and oil C. power plants D. wind turbines 40. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss? A. How wind power works. B. How wind power was found. C. The development of wind power. D. The advantages of wind power. 41. Why may wind power not keep growing so quickly in the future? A. It is very expensive to build lots of wind turbines. B. It is difficult to improve the wind power technology. C. There are few people who accept it as a new power source. D. Many wind turbines are needed and there is less space for them. 42. Which of the following is the right reason why people don’t support turbines? a. Lines of turbines are ugly. b. Noise from turbines often troubles people. c. Turbines kill birds that fly into them. d. Turbines take up too much space. A. abcd B. acd C. abc D. bcd 43. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The Power of Wind B. The Role of Wind C. The Cost of Wind Power D. The History of Wind Power 【答案】39. B 40. D 41. D 42. C 43. 【39题详解】 根据第一段“most of our electricity comes from power plants… that burn coal and oil”和第二段“There are two big problems with using these things for electricity”可知,“these things”指代前文提到的用于发电的燃料,即煤炭和石油。 【41题详解】 根据第五段“Many wind turbines are needed to make much electricity. So wind-power companies try to build wind farms but are competing with other uses for the land.” 【42题详解】 根据第六段“people think that lines of turbines are ugly. Noise from turbines often troubles people. Also, turbines kill birds that fly into them.” Why are good eating habits important? C Every time I saw my coupled friends share their vacations on social media while I went home to visit my family, I thought, “I’ll be happy when I finally find someone who will go to Iceland with me.” Iceland was a symbol of a lot of things for me. 34. D In the United States, most of our electricity comes from power plants (发电厂) that burn coal and oil.
