B Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness (荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000. Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche (雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762. 24. What attracted the early settlers to New York City? A. Its geographical position. B. Its small population. C. Its business culture. D. Its favourable climate. 25. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson? A. Two-thirds of them stayed there. B. Almost everyone gave up. C. One out of five people got rich. D. Half of them died. 26. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson? A. They found the city too crowded. B. They were short of food. C. They were unable to stand the winter. D. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. The gold rush in Canada. B. The rise and fall of a city. C. Journeys into the wilderness. D. Tourism in Dawson. C An accurate diagnosis of ADHD (多动症) is really important for people who have it. It helps them understand their condition and get the right support. But the current ways of diagnosing ADHD take a lot of time and aren’t always accurate. A new study suggests AI could help. Researchers in South Korea trained machine learning models to connect characteristics in photos of the fundus (眼底) at the back of the eye to a professional diagnosis of ADHD. Among the four machine learning models they tested, the best achieved a 96.9 percent score for predicting ADHD accurately, based on image analysis alone. The team discovered that higher blood vessel (血管) density, the shape and width of the vessels, and some changes in the eye’s optic disc were key signs of ADHD. For many years, people have thought that the changes in brain connectivity related to ADHD might also show up in our eyes. If we can figure out what exactly to look for, it could mean we have a faster and more reliable way to detect the disorder. The researchers tested this method on 323 children and teenagers with ADHD and another 323 without ADHD. The second group had the same age and sex as the first one. They found the AI system did very well in predicting ADHD and spotting some of its features. like problems with visual selective attention. Next, the researchers plan to test this method on more people of different ages. The average age of participants in this study was 9.5 years, and we know ADHD in adults can present quite differently. Also, they need to make the system better at telling the difference between ADHD and autism (自闭症). Since about 1 in 20 people has ADHD, a quicker and more accurate diagnosis can really make a difference to their lives. “Early screening and timely intervention can improve social, familial, and academic functioning in individuals with ADHD,” write the researchers. 28. What is the main problem with current ADHD diagnosis? A. Expensive and unetable. B. Dependable and available. C. Inaccessible and incorrect. D. Time-consuming and inaccurate. 29. What did the South Korean researchers do in the study? A. They developed a new drug for treating ADHD. B. They treated 323 children and teenagers with ADHD. C. They trained machine learning models to predict ADHD. D. They studied the relationship between autism and ADHD. 30. How did researchers test the AI system? A. By predicting the features. B. By using a matched control group. C. By referring to previous studies. D. By testing 600 children in total. 31. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. The intention of applying the AI system to more people. B. The significant impact of age differences on ADHD symptoms. C. The necessity of expanding AI-based ADHD diagnosis research. D. The importance of early social support for children with ADHD. D Scammers (骗子) are becoming tricky, turning to the Internet to better cheat their targets out of money. This includes using deep fakes (冒充者) to present themselves as someone else. Now, AI is being used in the fightback with Telecom Company O2 applying an AI granny in the action. Daisy, an AI grandma created by British Telecom Company O2 as the cleverest scam fighter, is a new AI tool with the voice of a grandmother designed to talk with scammers and “waste as much of their time as possible”. Basically, she rambles on (絮叨) about anything and everything to keep them away from real people. While Daisy may sound like a human, she is actually an AI large language model with the character application of a grandma. The company worked with known scam artists to train Daisy and used a method called Number Seeding to get Daisy’s phone number added to a list of online “mugs lists” — lists used by scammers targeting UK users. She functions by listening to the scammers and translating their voice to text. The AI then searches its large database to find a suitable reply, based on the specific scam training she’s received, and translates that text answer to speech for Daisy to reply. All this happens in seconds with no additional input needed. The goal is to keep the scammer on the phone for as long as possible by trapping them in a lifelike, but lengthy conversation. “Daisy is turning the tables on scammers — outsmarting them at their own pitiless game simply by keeping them on the line,” Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud at O2, explained. O2 also hopes to draw attention to scams by warning users to be careful about who they may be speaking to. “No matter how good someone on the other end of the phone may be, they aren’t always who you think they are,” Murray said. “In terms of tips and tricks, whether you’re shopping online, reviewing your emails, or receiving an out-of-the-blue phone call, it’s important to always remain watchful.” 32. How does the AI granny fight against scammers? A. By telling scammers funny stories. B. By talking scammers into quitting. C. By taking up scammers’ time. D. By keeping scammers interested. 33. Why does Daisy receive scam training? A. To recognize scammers’ tricks. B. To react to scammers properly. C. To make herself more creative. D. To improve her translation skills. 34. What do the underlined words “turning the tables on” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Serving. B. Educating. C. Tracking. D. Defeating. 35. What is Murray’s suggestion to the users? A. Stop answering calls. B. Use particular software. C. Raise anti-scam awareness. D. Avoid shopping online. Group tours offer convenience for international travel. ____36____ Here are a few key points to consider. A 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第一段中“People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. (人们在这些地方定居,因为它们很容易到达,而且自然适合交通和贸易。例如,纽约市靠近哈德逊河口的一个大港口。)”可知,纽约市靠近大港口的地理优势是早期定居者被吸引的主要原因。故选A项。 根据第二段中“Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. (在最初挖金的2万人中,有4000人致富。)”可知,最先在道森挖金的人中,五分之一(=4000÷20000)致富。故选C项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. D 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第一段中“But the current ways of diagnosing ADHD take a lot of time and aren’t always accurate.(但是目前诊断多动症的方法需要花费大量时间,而且并不总是准确的)”可知,目前这段多动症的方法耗时且不准确,故选D。 根据第二段“Researchers in South Korea trained machine learning models to connect characteristics in photos of the fundus (眼底) at the back of the eye to a professional diagnosis of ADHD. The second group had the same age and sex as the first one. The second group had the same age and sex as the first one.(研究人员在323名患有多动症的儿童和青少年以及另外323名没有多动症的儿童和青少年身上测试了这种方法。 D Scammers (骗子) are becoming tricky, turning to the Internet to better cheat their targets out of money. 32. C 33. B 34. D 35. He went about making ends meet by pulling a rickshaw(人力 车) and transporting passengers from one destination to another. Times were hard and he had to take the responsibility for supporting his family. One day, while returning from work, a man who looked like a wealthy person coming from the city stopped his rickshaw. He quickly told Ashwin the place he wanted to visit. His car had broken down and he desperately needed to get to the mentioned address urgently. After an uneventful ride, they reached the destination, and the passenger paid the fare. Ashwin, on returning home, found to his surprise that his passenger just then had dropped a small bag in his rickshaw. On opening it, he found 50 gold coins in it. He showed it to his family who couldn’t believe their luck. His wife said with joy, “Thank goodness. Now we find a solution to our problems.” That night, Ashwin couldn’t sleep. His conscience(良心) kept troubling him. At the crack of dawn, he woke his wife up. He said, “Lalita, I think it’s wrong to keep someone else’s gold coins. I am going to search for the man and hand over the coins to him.” Lalita was shocked and cried, but Ashwin stuck to his word. He tried hard to find the man, but nothing seemed to work. Eventually when he was about to give up, he saw that wealthy passenger. Ashwin ran to him and thrust(塞) the bag in his hand, “Sir, you left this bag in my rickshaw. I have been looking for you since then and I am so relieved to find you. Please take this,” he said. Paragraph 1; The man was surprised. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________. He was touched by Ashwin’s conscience and said he wanted to meet his family. Ashwin took the man home and introduced him to his family. The man looked at the poor condition of Ashwin’s house and his children and told Ashwin that he would like to help his family. Ashwin refused, but the man was insistent and said, “I would like to take the responsibility for educating your children.” Ashwin could not refuse the assistance since he wanted the children to become someone important. He agreed to send them to the city. Paragraph 2: Ashwin’s children then got educated and did well. Each vacation they went home to visit their parents. Ashwin often reminded them, “Never do anything at the cost of someone else.” The children remembered the advice and followed it. Years later, they became successful.
