When James Shapland spotted a gap in the market for a dog-friendly café that was half-way between a tiny, trendy coffee shop and a large chain, he started one himself, Coffi Lab — coffi is Welsh for coffee and the lab refers to Labradors (a breed of dog).
It’s not his first try in coffee shops. He sold his first business, Coffee #1, in 2011 for about £10 million to SA Brain, the Welsh brewer. However, he missed his business after the sale. He spent 2017 on a plan for a sourdough café, inspired by the success of the pizza chain Franco Manca, but shelved the idea because “the market seemed a little too good to be true”.
In 2020, he sensed an unmet need for cafés that had enough “space to take my labrador in”. His plan was to open coffee shops big enough for dogs and their owners, with friendly staff selling good food and coffee. Coffi Lab also donates the profits from the homemade dog biscuits it sells, plus first-day takings from each store it opens. So far, it has raised more than £100,000 for Guide Dogs charity and sponsored 11 dogs in training.
Coffi Lab now has 11 sites, with number 12 opening soon in Pontcanna, and three more over the next year in Wiltshire and Shropshire, all within 100 miles from its base in Cardiff. “I feel quite strongly about being able to visit frequently, so it’s not going to become a one-a-week blind expansion,” he said.
Coffi Lab began doing its own baking in 2023, when Shapland decided that buying in pre-packaged baked goods and sandwiches wouldn’t keep customers coming back. “When you do that, you end up with average food that you’re selling for £5 and it’s not what people want” — especially when they are paying £ 4 for a coffee.
34. What can we learn about Coffi Lab from the first two paragraphs?
A. It represents an emerging business.
B. It was modeled on a pizza chain.
C. It is a sub-brand of Coffee #1.
D. It began as sourdough café.
35. What does Coffi Lab do besides serving food and coffee?
A. Provide dog training sessions.
B. Run a dog welfare foundation.
C. Donate dog biscuits to charity.
D. Fund a dog charitable organization.
36. Which word best describes Shapland’s business approach?
A. Daring. B. Strategic. C. Idealistic. D. Traditional.
37. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?
A. Coffee prices have been rising.
B. Food shouldn’t cost more than coffee.
C. Food and coffee should be priced reasonably.
D. Customers expect better food for their money.
C
Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, identical in appearance. One came out of a supermarket box, meaning it was probably harvested when it was still unripe. By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks. The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.
Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages: they are convenient and still available even in winter months. But the two berries differ from each other in the same way that hearing music in a concert hall differs from listening to it on an old CD player. The home-grown fruit is an eatable case for making a home garden.
Your columnist, who long considered gardening a complete waste of time, advances this argument with great enthusiasm. Planting cool-weather greens, as gardeners across the north-east of America are now doing, can seem nonsense, since convenient, continuously well-stocked supermarket shelves are available all week. But the same could be said of cooking: there are many cheap and decent restaurants around, so why bother to make your own meals?
That attitude misconstrues the ultimate appeal of gardening: it mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce tomatoes and carrots of incomparable sweetness, and celtuce and herbs that taste like themselves rather than the plastic they are usually packaged in. While finding, let’s say, celtuce in the shops can take some time, effort, and expense, growing your own vegetables ensures a reliable supply.
On the other hand, a garden, especially in the early years, can produce little but frustration. Green hands may plant the wrong crops for their soil. And even expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to uncooperative weather.
No matter. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure-as with cooking. Writing or almost anything worthwhile — is in the work itself. To garden is to patiently, lovingly and diligently help life become strong and healthy, in the ground and above it.
38. What can we know about the supermarket strawberries?
A. They look distinct from home-grown ones. B. They give out pleasant and fresh smell.
C. They are picked days before fully grown. D. They are planted typically in winter.
39. What does the underlined word “misconstrues“ mean in paragraph 4?
A. Misinterprets. B. Transforms. C. Mistrusts. D. Highlights.
40. Why does the author mention the failures in gardening?
A. To warn readers not to take up gardening easily.
B. To advise readers to work in harmony with nature.
C. To make readers reflect on the methods of gardening.
D. To help readers have a whole picture of gardening.
41. What is the author’s opinion on gardening?
A. It’s a difficult and time-consuming process. B. Products of gardening make it worthwhile.
C. The time and efforts invested make it a delight. D. It reduces the cost of purchasing vegetables.
D
Everyone relies on bias — otherwise known as cognitive (认知的) shortcuts — in their daily lives. For example, imagine you’re scrolling through your social media feed and immediately dismiss a news article because it comes from a source you don’t typically trust. This scenario highlights how automatic and unconscious the mental process can be.
These biases aren’t character flaws. Thousands of years ago, this type of quick decision-making ensured the safety of ancient humans. Although these mental shortcuts served us well long ago, they don’t always translate well to our complex modern world. For several decades, psychology researchers have been testing interventions to help people become aware of and minimize their biases.
A new systematic review published in Nature Human Behaviour offers the most comprehensive analysis of bias training to date. Researchers combined results from 54 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 11,000 students to determine whether educational interventions can reduce cognitive biases. The studies used a wide range of approaches, including games, online simulations, classroom instruction, video-based training, and group discussions. The analysis found that these interventions led to a small but significant reduction in biased thinking.
The most successful interventions from the studies focused on teaching specific cognitive strategies to neutralize (中立化) particular biases. These strategies include actively seeking out contradictory evidence when evaluating a claim and using structured checklists to avoid jumping to conclusions.
Interestingly, the research revealed that some biases are harder to avoid than others. For example, people are more likely to cling to stereotypes (成见), such as assuming that someone who wears glasses and reads a lot is a librarian. It remains unclear whether these lessons transfer beyond the classroom; just because someone can avoid confirmation bias in an online test doesn’t mean they will use those skills in the real world. Researchers said this gap between laboratory performance and real-world application represents the next frontier in bias research.
This field is important because cognitive biases can have far-reaching consequences in modern society, influencing medical diagnoses, public policy decisions, elections, and more. The take-home message: This review provides solid evidence that bias reduction is possible.
42. How did bias help ancient humans?
A. Strengthen mental process. B. Make quick and safe decisions.
C. Improve unconscious learning. D. Enhance social communication.
43. Which method is most effective for lessening specific biases?
A. Having group discussions. B. Watching an instructional video.
C. Thinking critically about an event. D. Conducting video-based experiments.
44. What remains a major challenge in bias research according to the text?
A. The lack of research funding. B. The absence of effective tools.
C. The gap between lab and reality. D. The unwillingness of participants.
45. What is the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Find New Ways to Train Our Brains
B. Bias Training Proves Ineffective in New Study
C. Stereotypes Remain the Biggest Challenge for Society
D. Evidence Grows That Cognitive Bias Can Be Reduced
Human behaviors are often interconnected. For example, consider the case of a woman named Jennifer Dukes Lee. For ten years, she never made her bed except when her guests dropped by the house. Occasionally, she managed to make her bed four days in a row. On the morning of that fourth day, when she finished making the bed, she also folded a few clothes lying around the bedroom. Next, she found herself washing dirty dishes. ____46____ She was experiencing the Domino Effect
What is the Domino Effect? The Domino Effect states that when you change one behavior, it will activate a chain reaction and cause a shift in related behaviors too. In the words of Stanford professor BJ Fogg, “You can never change just one behavior. ____47____ When you change one behavior, other behaviors also shift.”
The Domino Effect is not merely a phenomenon that happens to you. It is something you can create. ____48____ Here are three keys to making this work in real life:
Start with the thing you are most motivated to do. Start with a small behavior and do it consistently. This will not only make you feel satisfied, but also open your eyes to the type of person you can become. ____49____
Maintain momentum (动力) and immediately move to the next task you are motivated to finish. Let the momentum of finishing one task carry you directly into the next behavior. With each repetition, you will become more committed to your new self-image.
____50____ As you try new habits, focus on keeping them small and manageable. The Domino Effect is about progress, not results. Simply keep up the momentum. Let the process repeat as one domino automatically knocks down the next.
A. Celebrate your little progress.
B. Human behaviors are often tied to one another.
C. Break things down into smaller tasks when in doubt.
D. It doesn’t matter which domino falls first, as long as one falls.
E. This proves the role that creativity plays in the Domino Effect.
F. Her act of bed-making had set off a chain of small household tasks.
G. It is within your power to make a chain reaction of good habits happen.

W: By the way, is the book suitable for low level students who need to work on their English pronunciation and speaking skills?
M: This book is custom-made for them. The book includes written dialogues, and there’s an accompanying CD of every dialogue. So students can read along and listen at the same time.
W: Cool! I’d love to check it out when it’s on sale. Maybe I can even recommend it to some of my friends who are learning English.

6. What is the speaker’s second tip for a safe tree climbing experience?
A. Dressing properly.
B. Checking the weather.
C. Choosing the right tree.
M: Tree climbing, once an important part of childhood, is now disappearing. Nowadays, one-quarter of kids have never climbed a tree. Many schools ban the activity, fearful of the risk of injury to kids. Why should we care about tree climbing? Isn’t it, after all, a risky activity? Actually, the research data tells a different story. In 2016, researchers from the University of Phoenix surveyed 1,600 parents who let their kids climb trees. 94.84% of parents reported that their kids hurt a knee, elbow or skin, and less than 2% reported a broken bone. Your kid could break a bone from falling, but that can also happen on playground equipment or a bike. Climbing trees is great for your kids physically and emotionally.
But before you point your kids to climb the nearest tree, make sure your kids are prepared for a safe tree climbing experience with the following climbing tips. Firstly, check the weather. Never climb during a thunderstorm or in strong wind. And dress properly for the occasion. Your kids should wear well-fitting clothing and flexible shoes. Lastly, choose wisely. Hardwood trees like oak trees, or pines are usually stronger and make good climbing trees.

W: Where’s my burger? The app says delivered, but my stomach says liar. I’ve been staring at the door like a dog waiting for a treat.
M: Chill. It’s probably stuck in the lift again, the lift thinks it’s a fridge. It is slower than a snail on a rainy day, especially around dinner time.
W: That lift eats more food than I do. It should pay rent.
M: Remember last week when the pizza rode up and down like a VIP with a free ticket.
W: Yes, extra tour. Cold cheese, no tip!
M: I’ll call the rider. He is probably chatting with the guard about the weather.
W: Tell him I’m hungry enough to eat my own shoe, socks included.
M: He’s on his way. He says he took a selfie with the doorbell and smiled wide.
W: Great. My dinner’s now insta-famous, and I bet it is proud of itself.
M: And let’s be real. Next time we tip extra and beg for rocket delivery so they run up the stairs instead. No more lift chaos.

11. New York
12. 1,370 miles
13. cut through
14. thin screens
15. waiting list
M: Spike Aerospace is a company based in Boston, Massachusetts. It makes aircraft that are something out of a science fiction novel. The company says that its S512 supersonic business jet can fly from New York to London in just three hours. They claim that the jet can reach a maximum speed of 1,370 miles per hour, which is 1.8 times faster than the speed of sound. Now, passengers might be able to fly all over the world for a simple day trip and still be back home by bedtime. Although it was first introduced in a 2013 research paper, the plane has undergone some important changes that have made its actual production possible. The newly designed delta wings are how the plane is able to travel so fast, as their shape makes the jet lighter and better able to cut through pockets of warm air. The inside of the plane is called the multiplex cabin, and instead of windows for passengers to look out of, small cameras show images on thin screens on the wall. This means you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. Not just anyone will be able to fly on the S512 though, as it will likely cost around 80 million dollars for a single round trip. Spike Aerospace is set to start offering its service to the public in December of 2018. The waiting list has already grown to over 100 names, with each person having paid a deposit of 10 percent of the total.

A. that, that B. what, that C. that, what D. what, what
【答案】A

19. Lily doesn’t know ________ she and her friends can do to help the little boy ________ parents have left their hometown for making money.
A. that; whose B. how; who C. what; who D. what; whose

23. No sooner ________ to help him ________ to regret doing it.
A. she had agreed; when she started B. did she agree; than she started
C. had she agreed; than she started D. had she agreed; when she started

26. — Did you get lost on your way to the conference?
— No, I ________ the map in advance, so I knew exactly where to go.
A. was to check B. had checked C. was checking D. checked
27. New evidence was discovered by the police, the thief .
A. leading to, to be caught B. having led to, being caught
C. leading to, being caught D. having led to, to be caught
lead to sb. doing sth.
28. ________ the exam was, he managed to finish all questions with careful checking.
A. Difficult as B. Difficult while C. Difficult when D. Difficult that
【答案】A
29. The little boy still needed the ________ 20 dollars to do with the things ________.
A. remaining; remained to be settled B. remaining; remaining to be settled
C. remained; remained to settle D. remained; remaining to settled
30. By nine o'clock, all the Olympic torch bearers _________ the top of Mount Qomolangma, _______appeared a rare rainbow soon.
A. reached; which B. reached; on which
C. had reached; which D. had reached; above which

B
A 35. D 36. B 37. D
根据第一段中“When James Shapland spotted a gap in the market for a dog-friendly café that was half-way between a tiny, trendy coffee shop and a large chain, he started one himself, Coffi Lab — coffi is Welsh for coffee and the lab refers to Labradors (a breed of dog). (当James Shapland发现市场上存在一个空白, 即一种介于小型潮流咖啡馆和大型连锁品牌之间的宠物犬友好型咖啡馆时,他亲自创办了一家,名为Coffi Lab——coffi是威尔士语中“咖啡”的意思,而lab则指拉布拉多犬(一种犬类品种))”以及第二段中“He sold his first business, Coffee #1, in 2011 for about £10 million to SA Brain, the Welsh brewer. However, he missed his business after the sale. He spent 2017 on a plan for a sourdough café, inspired by the success of the pizza chain Franco Manca, but shelved the idea because “the market seemed a little too good to be true”. (2011年,他将自己的首家企业Coffee #1以约1000万英镑的价格出售给了威尔士酿酒商SA Brain集团。然而,出售后他却怀念起自己的事业。2017年,受披萨连锁品牌Franco Manca成功的启发,他着手规划一家酸面包咖啡馆,但最终搁置了这个想法——因为“市场前景好得有些不真实”)”可知,Coffi Lab是针对市场空白新创立的品牌,且是近年来推出的新型商业模式,因此可推断它代表一种新兴业态。故选A。
根据第三段中“Coffi Lab also donates the profits from the homemade dog biscuits it sells, plus first-day takings from each store it opens. So far, it has raised more than £100,000 for Guide Dogs charity and sponsored 11 dogs in training. (Coffi Lab还会将其销售自制狗狗饼干所获利润,连同每家新店开业首日的营业收入一并捐赠出去。截至目前,该品牌已为导盲犬慈善机构筹集超过10万英镑资金,并资助了11只正在接受训练的导盲犬)”可知,Coffi Lab除了提供食物和咖啡外,还为导盲犬慈善机构筹集资金并赞助训练中的狗,即资助一个狗狗慈善组织。故选D。
【36题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“He spent 2017 on a plan for a sourdough café, inspired by the success of the pizza chain Franco Manca, but shelved the idea because “the market seemed a little too good to be true”. (2017年,受披萨连锁品牌Franco Manca成功的启发,他着手规划一家酸面包咖啡馆,但最终搁置了这个想法——因为“市场前景好得有些不真实”)”以及第三段中“In 2020, he sensed an unmet need for cafés that had enough “space to take my labrador in”. (2020年,他察觉到市场对有足够空间能带拉布拉多犬进入的咖啡馆存在未被满足的需求)”和第四段中““I feel quite strongly about being able to visit frequently, so it’s not going to become a one-a-week blind expansion,” he said. (“我非常希望能频繁到访(旗下门店),所以Coffi Lab不会进行每周一家的盲目扩张。” 他说道)”可知,Shapland在创业过程中会进行市场调研,根据市场需求调整计划,并且注重扩张的合理性,说明他的商业方法是具有战略性的。故选B。
【37题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“Coffi Lab began doing its own baking in 2023, when Shapland decided that buying in pre-packaged baked goods and sandwiches wouldn’t keep customers coming back. “When you do that, you end up with average food that you’re selling for £5 and it’s not what people want” — especially when they are paying £ 4 for a coffee.
C 39. A 40. D 41. C
根据第一段中“One came out of a supermarket box, meaning it was probably harvested when it was still unripe. By the time it reached the plate it may have been off the vine for two weeks. (其中一颗是从超市的盒子里拿出来的,这意味着它可能是在尚未成熟的时候收获的。当它到达盘子的时候,它可能已经离开藤蔓两个星期了)”可知,超市里的草莓在完全长大前几天采摘。故选C。
【39题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“the ultimate appeal of gardening: it mistakes the product for the purpose”可知,这种态度错误地把产品当成了目的,即这种态度误解了园艺的最终吸引力。 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“On the other hand, a garden, especially in the early years, can produce little but frustration. Green hands may plant the wrong crops for their soil. And even expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to uncooperative weather.

B 43. C 44. C 45. D
根据第二段“Thousands of years ago, this type of quick decision-making ensured the safety of ancient humans.(数千年前,这种迅速做出决策的方式保障了古人类的安全)”可知,偏见使古代人类能够迅速且安全地做出决策。
根据第四段“The most successful interventions from the studies focused on teaching specific cognitive strategies to neutralize (中立化) particular biases. These strategies include actively seeking out contradictory evidence when evaluating a claim and using structured checklists to avoid jumping to conclusions.(这些研究中最为成功的干预措施在于教授特定的认知策略,以消除特定的偏见。这些策略包括在评估某一论断时主动寻找与之相悖的证据,以及使用结构化的检查清单来避免匆忙下结论)”可知,对于减少特定的偏见而言,对某一事件进行批判性思考最为有效。故选C。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Researchers said this gap between laboratory performance and real-world application represents the next frontier in bias research.(研究人员表示,实验室测试结果与实际应用效果之间的这种差异,是偏见研究领域的下一个重要课题)”可知,偏见研究中仍存在的一个主要挑战是实验室环境与实际情况之间的差距。
根据第一段“Everyone relies on bias — otherwise known as cognitive (认知的) shortcuts — in their daily lives. For example, imagine you’re scrolling through your social media feed and immediately dismiss a news article because it comes from a source you don’t typically trust. This scenario highlights how automatic and unconscious the mental process can be.(在日常生活中,每个人都会依赖某种偏见——也就是所谓的认知捷径。
F 47. B 48. G 49. D 50. C
根据上文“Human behaviors are often interconnected. Next, she found herself washing dirty dishes.(人类的行为通常是相互关联的。
根据上文“You can never change just one behavior.(你永远不可能仅仅改变一种行为)”可知,此处讲述的是不可能仅仅只改变一种行为,结合下文的“When you change one behavior, other behaviors also shift.(当你改变一种行为时,其他行为也会随之改变。),说明行为之间是相互联系的,所以B选项“人类的行为常常是相互联系的”讲述的内容符合语境。故选B。
【48题详解】
根据上文“The Domino Effect is not merely a phenomenon that happens to you. It is something you can create.(多米诺效应不仅仅是一种发生在你身上的现象。这是你可以创造的东西)”以及后文“Here are three keys to making this work in real life(以下是在现实生活中实现这一目标的三个关键)”可知,本句主要说明了多米诺效应可以用于创造哪种东西,后文给出三个关键。故G选项“你有能力使好习惯产生连锁反应”符合语境。故选G。
【49题详解】
根据上文“Start with the thing you are most motivated to do. Start with a small behavior and do it consistently. This will not only make you feel satisfied, but also open your eyes to the type of person you can become.(从你最有动力去做的事情开始。从一个小的行为开始,并坚持下去。这不仅会让你感到满足,还会让你看到你可以成为什么样的人)”可知,上文提到从小的行为开始,并且坚持下去,说明开始的行为最重要,而不是具体哪一个行为重要,故D选项“哪个多米诺骨牌先倒下并不重要,只要有一个倒下就行”符合语境。故选D。
【50题详解】
根据后文“As you try new habits, focus on keeping them small and manageable. The Domino Effect is about progress, not results. Simply keep up the momentum. Let the process repeat as one domino automatically knocks down the next.(当你尝试新的习惯时,注意保持它们小而易管理。多米诺骨牌效应关乎的是进展,而不是结果。只要保持这种势头就可以了。让这个过程重复,因为一个多米诺骨牌会自动击倒下一个)”可知,后文提到保持习惯小而易管理,即把事情拆分成小的任务,更好完成。故C选项“当你有疑问的时候,把事情分解成更小的任务”符合语境。故选C。

Since food fuels our bodies for daily activities and impacts our cognitive functions, cultivating sensible dietary habits plays a pivotal role in optimizing our health. Accordingly, emphasis should be placed on a diversified intake of nutrients. Furthermore, we should cut down on highly processed snacks and sugary drinks, which are often packed with hidden calories.
