If you’re chained to your phone and unhappy about it, you might consider receiving smartphone notifications (通知) at set intervals throughout the day 21 ________ as they come. Researchers at Duke University and Georgetown University found that study participants who received notifications set 22 (arrive) only three times a day reported better moods, higher productivity, and greater feelings of control over their phones. In comparison with participants who received notifications as usual and another group of participants who received no notifications at all, study participants also unlocked their phones 23 (often). In total, 237 smartphone owners living in India participated in the study. Participants downloaded an Android app developed by the researchers that regulated 24 delivery of phone notifications. Respondents also were asked to report in a daily diary various measures including: “concentration, distraction, stress, anxiety, mood, productivity, social connectedness, and work enjoyment — as well as phone-specific outcomes: feeling of being interrupted by notifications, sense of missing out on notifications, sense of control over phone, social pressure to respond to others, phone overuse, and intentional phone checking.” Participants 25 (inform) that they could always access their notifications by opening individual apps. And the authors give their further explanation, “In other words, we only controlled the delivery of notifications (e.g., to the lock screen), rather than preventing messages from being accessed at all.” “Compared to those in the control condition (notifications as usual), participants 26 notifications were set three-times-a-day felt more attentive, productive, in a better mood, and in greater control of their phones,” the researchers write, 27 (note) that this group also reported lower stress levels. “In contrast, participants who did not receive notifications at all harvested few of those benefits, but experienced higher levels of anxiety and ‘fear of missing out’ (FoMO).” They’ve released the app, called Daywise, for personal use through Google Play. But Daywise 28 (be only) available on the Android platform so far. “ 29 the Android app, iOS (short for Internetwork Operating System) doesn’t allow third party developers to control notifications to a degree we’d like for setting to work in a nuanced (细微的) manner,” Daywise creator Ranjan Jagannathan told us. “ 30 we’re able to do this flexibly enough, we will not be able to build a powerful version of Daywise for iOS. We are working for it.” Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A.drowned   B.carefully     C. tissue    D.captured     E. release     F. steadily     G. present       H. block    I. extremely      J. course    K. slightly The Villain in the Atmosphere The villain in the atmosphere is carbon dioxide. It does not seem to be a villain. It is not very poisonous and it is 31 in the atmosphere in so small a quantity — only 0.034 percent — that it does us no harm. What’s more, that small quantity of carbon dioxide in the air is essential to life. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and convert it into their own 32 , which serves as the basic food supply for all of animal life (including human beings, of course). In the process they 33 oxygen, which is also necessary for all animal life. But here is what this apparently harmless and certainly essential gas is doing to us: The sea level is rising very slowly from year to year. In all likelihood, it will continue to rise and do so at a greater rate in the 34 of the next hundred years. Eventually the sea will reach two hundred feet above its present level, and will be splashing against the windows along the twentieth floors of Manhattan’s skyscrapers. Naturally the Manhattan streets will be deep under water. Florida, too, will be gone, as will much of the British Isles, the crowded Nile valley, and the low-lying areas of China, India, and Russia. Many cities will be 35 , and much of the most productive farming land of the world will be lost. As the food supply drops, starvation will be widespread. And all because of carbon dioxide. But how does that come about? What is the connection? It begins with sunlight. Sunlight travels through miles of atmosphere to reach the earth’s surface, where it is   36 . In this way, the earth is warmed. At night, the earth cools by radiating heat into space in the form of infrared radiation. As the earth gains heat by day and loses it at night, it maintains a balance. However, carbon dioxide tends to 37 such radiation. This is called the “greenhouse effect” of carbon dioxide. We can be thankful that carbon dioxide is keeping us comfortably warm, but the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is going up 38 and that is where the villainy comes in. In 1958, when the carbon dioxide of the atmosphere first began to be measured 39 , it made up only 0.0316 percent of the atmosphere. Each year since, the concentration has moved upwards and it now stands at 0.0340 percent. It is estimated that by 2020 the concentration will be about 0.0660 percent. This means that in the coming decades, the earth’s average temperature will go up 40 . Winters will grow a bit milder on the average and summers a bit hotter. Little by little, the glaciers will retreat, and the polar ice caps will begin to melt. It is the melting of the ice caps that is the worst change and it is this that demonstrates the villainy of carbon dioxide. Something like 90 percent of the ice in the world is to be found in the huge Antarctica ice cap, and another 8 percent is in the Greenland ice cap. If these ice caps begin to melt, the sea level will rise, with the result that I have already described. III.Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. Why saving older animals is vital to species’ survival It’s not just humans who get wiser as they age — animals do too, according to a growing body of research. And 41 is not just a number: as animals get older they behave differently 42 their life experiences, gain richer knowledge of their environment, and often pass it on to younger members of their group, researchers say. The problem is, we are killing off these older creatures. “Earth’s old animals are 43 ,” researchers warned in a paper published in Science last month, which analyzed more than 9,000 peer-reviewed papers. Few make it to old age, and the ones that do are 44 to being hunted or harvested by humans, because they are the biggest or have, for example, the largest antlers, horns, or tusks. 45 the largest and most experienced animals can have significant consequences for group culture and social structures, researchers warn, as they argue for a new approach called “longevity conservation.” Much research on ageing has focused on negative health aspects, says the lead researcher, Keller Kopf. “That 46 idea about old individuals not being important for populations or for environments is really not the full story,” he says. The more he examined different groups of animals, the more he stumbled on remarkable instances demonstrating the 47 of older creatures. Primates, whales, elephants, and pack-hunting animals all have old individuals who carry vital 48 knowledge and maintain social structures, according to the paper. Older female elephants, for example, have a “social memory” of who is a friend or 49 , and are more sensitive to 50 dangers such as listening out for lions. The research shows that removing older individuals results in populations becoming more unstable over time, sometimes eventually 51 . Older birds can provide better food and care for their offspring, and deep-sea corals that can grow for thousands of years can provide shelter for marine mammals. Although older mammals may produce fewer offspring themselves, they help look after young ones. This is called the “ 52 hypothesis” of healthy populations, which was first studied in humans but has also been explored in elephants and orcas. “Older individuals are likely to 53 important cultural knowledge, so if our fishing practices are aimed at catching these individuals then the culture collapses,” says Kopf. “The trouble is once culture is lost it is very hard to regain. This would explain,” he adds, “why many fish populations have not 54 , even after fishing moratoriums (暂停).” Kopf’s paper refers to the importance of “cultural transmission” that not only recognises that animals have culture but that these individuals transmit their social learning to other individuals. The loss of old individuals can be a 55 factor for many species threatened with extinction, he continues. “It’s not currently recognized widely but the literature itself has shown that the loss of these old individuals can be a major contributor to the decline of those species.” 41.A.time B.success C.age D.happiness 42.A.depending on B.sticking to C.worrying about D.resulting in 43.A.on the rise B.in decline C.in demand D.out of control 44.A.vulnerable B.beneficial C.accustomed D.obliged 45.A.Trapping B.Protecting C.Taming D.Eliminating 46.A.abstract B.accurate C.simple D.faint 47.A.danger B.value C.mystery D.trace 48.A.cultural B.academic C.adequate D.basic 49.A.superior B.colleague C.enemy D.peer 50.A.potential B.immediate C.obvious D.permanent 51.A.thriving B.stabilizing C.spreading D.collapsing 52.A.species B.memory C.grandmother D.communication 53.A.absorb B.harbor C.advance D.digest 54.A.analyzed B.estimated C.managed D.recovered 55.A.balancing B.driving C.complicating D.limiting Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. A It was a cold night in Washington, D.C., and I was heading back to the hotel when a man approached me. He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I’d read the signs: “Don’t give money to beggars as most of them are swindlers.” So I shook my head and kept walking.   I wasn’t prepared for a reply, but with no hesitation, he followed me and said, “I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But I kept on walking.   The incident kept bothering me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he hadn’t been a real beggar. On a freezing cold night, no less, I assumed the worst of a fellow human being. Flying back to Anchorage, I couldn’t help thinking of him. I tried to reason my failure to help by supposing government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you’re not supposed to give money to beggars.   Somewhere over Seattle, I started to write my weekly garden column for The Anchorage Daily News. Out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean’s Cafe, a local charity service kitchen, feeds hundreds of hungry local people every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row of vegetables or flowers in their gardens for Bean’s?  Plant a row for Bean’s. It’s clean and simple.   We didn’t keep records back then, but the idea began to take off. Folks would fax me or call when they took something in. It’s food for the spirit and comfort for my conscience.   In April 1995, the Garden Writers Association of America(GWAA) held their annual meeting in Anchorage and after learning our program, Plant a Row for Bean’s became Plant a Row For The Hungry. The idea then was to have every member write or talk about planting a row for the hungry, which brought the program to national attention. As more and more people participated, new variations cropped up. Many companies gave free seeds to customers and displayed the logo for the program. Donations poured in. It was then that I could really stop feeling guilty. 56.The underlined word “swindlers” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ______. A.policemen B.writers C.cheaters D.beggars 57.Why did the author think he assumed the worst of a fellow human being? A.Because he didn’t show fair respect to a beggar treating him badly. B.Because he could have helped a hungry man but he passed by. C.Because he believed that no people begged because of real hunger. D.Because he thought that charity work was the government’s duty. 58.How did the author make up for what he had done? A.He set up a local kitchen to help the poor. B.He planted a row of vegetables for charity. C.He called on people to donate money to the Bean’s. D.He initiated the idea of Plant a row for Bean’s. 59.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.The beggar gave up the first time he was turned down by the author. B.The author invented the program inspired by the Anchorage Daily News. C.GWAA expanded the program concept and made it nationwide in 1995. D.The program was later taken over by some seeding companies. B Best Electronic Dictionaries Bottom line Perfect for Students: This pen is perfect for students who are learning other languages. A.designers trying to find inspirations for product design B.retailers manufacturing and selling a range of products C.experts reviewing and evaluating products for consumers D.consumers looking for the right product with good reviews C Is being bilingual good for your brain? Reams of papers have been published on the cognitive advantages of multilingualism. Beyond the conversational doors it can open, multilingualism is supposed to improve “executive function” — a loose concept including the ability to ignore distractions, plan complex tasks and update beliefs with new information. Most striking, numerous studies show that bilinguals experience a later onset of dementia, by around four years on average. But some of these studies have failed to replicate, leaving experts questioning whether the effect is real, and if so, what exactly it involves. The good news is that it is never too late to start learning a new language for brain benefits. A 2019 study showed that while moderate language learning in adults does not boost executive function, it does mitigate age-related cognitive decline. The biggest benefits seem to come to those who master a second language fully — usually because they speak two languages natively, or at least on a near-daily basis for a long time. A bit of university French, unfortunately, does not convey the same advantages as deep knowledge and long experience. Frequent language switching may be particularly important: studies of interpreters and translators provide some of the strongest evidence for a bilingual advantage, with them faster at repeatedly switching between math problems like simple addition and subtraction than monolinguals, suggesting better cognitive control. But there is “a forest of complex variables”, says Mark Antoniou of Western Sydney University. Bilinguals differ from monolinguals in many ways: a diplomat’s child raised abroad may have cognitive advantages unrelated to bilingualism. Yet in poorer regions, studies find multilingual people show the strongest benefits, with researchers suspecting that bilingualism exercises children’s brains where schooling is insufficient. Age also plays a role: the brain effects of bilingualism are stronger for young children and the elderly than for young adults. Bilingual kids outperform monolinguals in early cognitive development, though monolingual classmates may later catch up. One meta-analysis found 25 of 45 studies showed a bilingual advantage in children under 6, while only 17 did in those aged 6-12. At life’s other end, Ellen Bialystok of York University, a pioneer in the field, compares bilingualism’s cognitive protection to a slice of holey Swiss cheese: other brain - healthy habits like exercise are similar to piling slices, whose holes align differently, offering greater collective protection. All these studies, however, take for granted the undeniable mental superpower of language study: talking to people you could not otherwise understand. Even if you cannot be fluent from infancy, that alone is reason enough to learn a new language. 63.What does the word “mitigate” most probably mean in Paragraph 2? A.Accelerate. B.Relieve. C.Ignore. D.Cause. 64.What can we infer about the bilingual advantage? A.Basic second language learning can bring obvious cognitive benefits. B.Monolinguals are slower in solving simple math problems than bilinguals. C.Interpreters’ better cognitive control lies in frequent language shifting. D.Only with native-like fluency can people gain the bilingual advantage. 65.Which of the following statements is TRUE? A.Bilinguals always have cognitive advantages over monolinguals in all respects. B.Bilingualism can make up for the insufficiency of schooling in poor areas. C.Bilingual kids under 12 show a consistent cognitive advantage over monolinguals. D.Complex variables make it hard to confirm the real cause of bilingual advantages. 66.What does Ellen Bialystok intend to explain by comparing bilingualism to “holey Swiss cheese”? A.Different brain-healthy habits have completely different protective effects on the brain. B.The cognitive protection from bilingualism is far less than that from physical exercise. C.Bilingualism alone cannot provide complete cognitive protection for the brain. D.Bilingualism is the most effective way to protect the brain from cognitive decline. Today, I can sit still for hours with barely a shuffle. It turns out, however, that I may have been better-off before. Let s dig a bit more into the science. Fidgeting is defined as moving or acting impatiently or nervously. However, James Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, says it is better defined as a neurologically programmed rhythmic-movement of a body part. In other words, the fidget factor is an outward sign of a natural desire to move. While no evidence shows that fidgeting directly leads to a longer life, studies have shown fidgeting can help. For one, fidgeting may help us cope with stress. In one study, volunteers were put in a stressful situation, a simulated job interview followed by a mental arithmetic (算术) task. Researchers found those who fidgeted by displaying “displacement behavior,” such as scratching, biting their lips or touching their face, found the experience less stressful. Meanwhile, fidgeting may also help lower some of the other risks that come with a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Feet tapping while sitting, for example, can protect the arteries (动脉) in-legs-and potentially help prevent related diseases. “If you’re sedentary, that’s not good for you. But if you’re sedentary and fidget, it reduces your risk of long-term ill health,” says Janet Cade at the University of Leeds. The findings raise questions about whether the way we perceive people who fidget should change. Fidgeting is often seen as rude or an indication that someone is not paying attention. But if these simple movements are good for our health, maybe they should be indulged. 71.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V. Hearing that our school library plans to purchase new books and collect suggestions from teachers and students, I’m writing to recommend The Little Prince. This book tells a warm story about a little prince traveling across different planets. During his journey, he meets various strange adults and finally lands on Earth, where he makes friends with a pilot and learns the true meaning of love and responsibility from his rose. I strongly recommend it for two reasons. First, its simple but profound language helps us improve our English reading skills easily. Besides, it teaches teenagers to cherish the people around them and keep a pure heart, which brings us valuable spiritual inspiration. I believe it will be popular among students. Thank you for taking my advice into consideration. Yours sincerely, Li Ming 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $Section a short conversations directions. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. As a child, I was regularly told off for swinging on my chair, and fidgeting through story time. Eventually, I learned to resist the desire to fidget. 71._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V. We are working for it.” 此处为固定搭配set sth. to do sth.,意为“设置某物做某事”,本句中set to arrive only three times a day为过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰notifications。 23. 上文“study participants who received notifications set _____ (arrive) only three times a day reported better moods, higher productivity, and greater feelings of control over their phones”提到每日三次接收通知的参与者情绪更好、工作效率更高、对手机掌控感更强,因此他们解锁手机的频率比另外两组更低,要用比较级less修饰副词often,表示“频率更低”,故填less often。 24. 时间状语so far意为“到目前为止”,是现在完成时的标志词,主语是单数Daywise,故填has only been。 29. 结合后文“we will not be able to build a powerful version of Daywise for iOS”可知,此处构成not...until...(直到…… Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. 【答案】 31.G 32.C 33.E 34.J 35.A 36.D 37.H 38.F 39.B 40.K 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 故选A。 36. K。 III.Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. “It’s not currently recognized widely but the literature itself has shown that the loss of these old individuals can be a major contributor to the decline of those species.” 41.A.time B.success C.age D.happiness 42.A.depending on B.sticking to C.worrying about D.resulting in 43.A.on the rise B.in decline C.in demand D.out of control 44.A.vulnerable B.beneficial C.accustomed D.obliged 45.A.Trapping B.Protecting C.Taming D.Eliminating 46.A.abstract B.accurate C.simple D.faint 47.A.danger B.value C.mystery D.trace 48.A.cultural B.academic C.adequate D.basic 49.A.superior B.colleague C.enemy D.peer 50.A.potential B.immediate C.obvious D.permanent 51.A.thriving B.stabilizing C.spreading D.collapsing 52.A.species B.memory C.grandmother D.communication 53.A.absorb B.harbor C.advance D.digest 54.A.analyzed B.estimated C.managed D.recovered 55.A.balancing B.driving C.complicating D.limiting 【答案】 41.C 42.A 43.B 44.A 45.B 46.C 47.B 48.A 49.C 50.A 51.D 52.C 53.B 54.D 55.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 A. time时间;B. success成功;C. age年龄;D. happiness幸福。根据前文“It’s not just humans who get wiser as they age — animals do too”可知,此处围绕“年龄”展开,强调年龄不只是数字,符合语境。故选C。 42. A. depending on取决于、由于;B. sticking to坚持;C. worrying about担心;D. resulting in导致。结合下文“their life experiences, gain richer knowledge of their environment, and often pass it on to younger members of their group,”可知,动物行为的不同取决于它们的生活经历。故选A。 43. A. on the rise在增加;B. in decline在减少、在衰退;C. in demand有需求;D. out of control失控。根据前文“The problem is, we are killing off these older creatures.” 根据后文“because they are the biggest or have, for example, the largest antlers, horns, or tusks”可知,年长动物因自身特点,更容易成为人类猎杀的目标。故选A。 45. A. 根据第一段“I’d read the signs: “Don’t give money to beggars as most of them are swindlers(我看到标语上写着:“不要给乞丐钱,因为他们大多数都是swindlers)”可知,作者径直走开没有帮助那个乞讨者,因为认为他们是骗子。cheaters是近义词。故选C。 57.推理判断题。根据第一段“So I shook my head and kept walking.(于是我摇了摇头,继续往前走。)”以及第三段“The incident kept bothering me for the rest of the week. 【答案】63.B 64.C 65.D 66.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨双语能力对大脑是否有益,介绍其认知优势、影响因素及相关研究争议。 63.词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“A 2019 study showed that while moderate language learning in adults does not boost executive function, it does mitigate age-related cognitive decline.(2019年的一项研究表明,虽然成年人适度的语言学习不会提高执行功能,但它确实能mitigate与年龄相关的认知衰退)”可知,前后句为转折关系,前文说不会提高执行功能,转折后应是表达积极作用,即缓解认知衰退,由此猜测mitigate意为”缓解“,与relieve同义。故选B项。 64.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Frequent language switching may be particularly important: studies of interpreters and translators provide some of the strongest evidence for a bilingual advantage, with them faster at repeatedly switching between math problems like simple addition and subtraction than monolinguals, suggesting better cognitive control.(频繁的语言切换可能尤为重要:对口译员和笔译员的研究为双语优势提供了一些最有力的证据,他们在简单加减法等数学问题之间反复切换的速度比单语者更快,这表明他们的认知控制能力更好)”可推断,口译员更好的认知控制能力源于频繁的语言切换。故选C项。 65.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“But there is ”a forest of complex variables“, says Mark Antoniou of Western Sydney University. Bilinguals differ from monolinguals in many ways: a diplomat’s child raised abroad may have cognitive advantages unrelated to bilingualism.(西悉尼大学的马克・安东尼奥说,这里存在“大量复杂的变量”。双语者与单语者在很多方面都不同:在国外长大的外交官子女可能拥有与双语能力无关的认知优势)”可知,复杂的变量使得很难确定双语优势的真正原因。故选D项。 66.推理判断题。根据第六段中的“Ellen Bialystok of York University, a pioneer in the field, compares bilingualism’s cognitive protection to a slice of holey Swiss cheese: other brain-healthy habits like exercise are similar to piling slices, whose holes align differently, offering greater collective protection.(该领域的先驱、约克大学的艾伦・比亚利斯托克将双语能力的认知保护比作一片有洞的瑞士奶酪:其他有益大脑健康的习惯,如锻炼,就像叠放奶酪片,它们的洞排列不同,能提供更强的集体保护)”可推断,艾伦・比亚利斯托克想通过这个比喻说明,仅靠双语能力无法为大脑提供完全的认知保护,需要结合其他有益大脑的习惯。故选C项。 Section C Directions: Read the following passages. Summary Writing Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. As a child, I was regularly told off for swinging on my chair, and fidgeting through story time. Eventually, I learned to resist the desire to fidget. 71.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 I was told not to fidget in my childhood, but these small movements carry benefits. Defined as restless movement, fidgeting actually reflects our natural urge to move. Fidgeting may relieve stress and promote longevity as simple movement mitigates the diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, we should shift our attitude and recognize its hidden health value in these actions. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍说小时候作者被告知不要动来动去,但这些细微的动作其实有益健康。所谓“小动作”,即不安的肢体活动,实际上反映了我们天生的运动欲望。适度的小动作有助于缓解压力,并延长寿命,因为简单的活动可以减轻久坐生活方式带来的各种疾病。因此,我们应该转变观念,认识到这些行为背后隐藏的健康价值。 【详解】1. 要点摘录 ①As a child, I was regularly told off for swinging on my chair, and fidgeting through story time. It turns out, however, that I may have been better-off before. ②Fidgeting is defined as moving or acting impatiently or nervously. All kinds of myths surround the lives of well-known people. Most people are familiar with the works of William Shakespeare, one of the greatest English writers of the 16th and 17th centuries. Yet how many know Shakespeare, the person, the man behind the works? After centuries of research, scholars are still trying to discover Shakespeare’s personal history. It is not easily found in his writings. Authors of the time could not protect their works. An acting company, for example, could change a play if they wanted to. Nowadays, writers have copyrights that protect their work. Many myths arose about Shakespeare. Some said he had no formal education. Others believed that he began his career by tending the horses of wealthy men. All of these myths are interesting, but are they true? Probably not. Shakespeare’s father was a respected man in Stratford-on-Avon, a member of the town council. He sent young William to grammar school. Most people of Elizabethan times did not continue beyond grammar school; so, Shakespeare did have, at least, an average education. Some parts of Shakespeare’s life will always remain unknown. The Great London Fire of 1666 burned many important documents that could have been a source of clues. We will always be left with many questions and few facts. Questions: 11.What does the speaker say about William Shakespeare? 12.What do we learn about Shakespeare’s father? 13.Why does the speaker say parts of Shakespeare’s life will remain a mystery? 14-16【答案】ABB 【听力材料】 Wherever you go and for whatever reason, it is important to be safe. While the majority of people you will meet when travelling are sure to be friendly and welcoming, there are dangers. Theft being the most common. Just as in your home country, do not expect everyone you meet to be friendly and helpful. It’s important to prepare for your trip in advance and to take precautions while you are travelling. As you prepare for your trip, make sure you have the right paperwork. You don’t want to get to your destination, only to find you have the wrong visa, or worse, that your passport isn’t valid anymore. Also, make sure you travel with proper medical insurance, so that if you are sick or injured during your travels, you will be able to get treatment. If you want to drive while you are abroad, make sure you have an international driver’s license. When you get to your destination, use official transport. Always go to bus and taxi stands. Don’t accept rides from strangers who offer you a lift. If there is no meter in the taxi, agree on a price before you get in. If you prefer to stay in cheap hotels while travelling, make sure you can lock the door of your room from the inside. Finally, remember to smile. It’s the friendliest and most sincere form of communication, and is sure to be understood in any part of the world! Questions: 14. W: Ah, I don’t know. What’s the difference? M: Well, the 45 costs 15 pounds more. W: Mm, so what’s the total price then? M: It’s 387 pounds. W: Does that include value-added tax? M: Oh, I’m not sure. Most of the prices do. Yes, I think it does. W: Mm, what are the boards actually made of? M: Oh, I don’t know. I think it’s a sort of plastic stuff these days. It’s white anyway.
