The Trouble with Friends
On a daily basis, I teach kids. By “kids”, I mean teens to college-age, sometimes mid-twenties. Kids talk a lot about their friends, but don’t usually talk about their families. Sometimes I’m taken completely by surprise when, months into our knowing each other, a student mentions 1 (have) a twin. I suppose hearing the constant chatter about friends has made me consider my own, and how hard it can be 2 (maintain) these bonds as an adult. Mostly, what I notice is that I lose more friends than I make.
An obvious reason for that is marriage. Friends get married and their spouses become their 3 (close) friends. My husband is now the person I spend the most time with. I tell him everything because I trust him with my thoughts, 4 stupid they may be. I used to be the same way with friends, but when I tell friends something now, I must accept the possibility that they will tell their spouses, 5 I often greet but rarely know. A friendship is truly strained when you don’t like the spouse. Sometimes this new person is so far removed from 6 you imagined for your friend that you wonder if you knew your friend at all.
After marriage, a friend who used to discuss things with you stops doing so, and 7 (update) you only on definitive good news, never the bad, the ugly, or the in-progress. She saves all of that for her partner. In other words, you’re no longer included in the problem-solving. Of course, some matters belong first 8 the marriage: the stuff of intimacy, finance, family. Increasingly, my friends leave me out of these big conversations, and vice versa, but when 9 outcome is certain, we do update one another, which reminds us that we’re still friends, but with the friendship 10 (reduce) to a PowerPoint.

I Killed Color on My Phone
A few months ago, I began to be worried that I was devoting too many hours to online videos. So, when I read an article about the 11 of switching one’s phone to a black-and-white color mode, I figured I’d give it a try.
The result was shocking. The moment I switched, I no longer felt a(n) 12 need to look at my phone. The number of hours I spent per day on the phone dropped 40 percent, to four hours and 40 minutes per day — still embarrassingly high, but not the dizzying eight-plus hours I was 13 .
There are some small 14 to my black-and-white online life. Because the answer and decline buttons on my phone are both gray, I’ll sometimes hang up on a call I want to answer. Fortunately, these days, nobody minds if you just call them back. Besides, games weren’t as fun, so I started playing them on my pad and discovered that I liked the separation between work and play that it 15 : phone for boring stuff; pad for fun. And I’ve found that whenever I return to color, even 16 , I am desperate to turn it off again as quickly as possible. With my eyes no longer used to the brightness, I now find the phone’s colors to be too vivid, too 17 .
Two and a half months into this journey, my phone usage remains about four hours per day. And I’m pretty sure I’ll never go back to color on my phone. I feel like turning off color on my phone made me more aware and more 18 of the color and beauty in real life. Now that I am no longer turning to my phone for fun, I find myself 19 it out in other ways — reading more books, watching more movies, planning more gatherings with friends, hanging out with my kids. And those are things I do want to be 20 to.
III.Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
The first time I went to Europe alone I stayed at a youth hostel (旅社). Youth hostels have large dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds (双层床). They’re considerably cheaper than 21 hotels. I was in Paris for a week, and I had no idea what to expect. As I was going out to 22 the city on my first night, a young Japanese man asked if he could join me. We went to see Notre Dame, and my new friend taught me a Japanese word, “sugoi,” which means “awesome.” An elderly French woman we encountered on the street directed us to a subterranean party in a medieval (中世纪的) space where people danced to rock and roll songs.
This was the first time I experienced a great advantage of youth hostels: They are not only relatively cheap but also provide a great opportunity for the 23 .
In subsequent stays at youth hostels, I would meet the scion (后裔) of a rich New England family who was 24 to find meaning in his life, a lawyer going through a divorce, and a young African man looking for a girlfriend. I 25 to take trains over airplanes for the same reason: On trains, I talked with people from all walks of life — people who often shared their 26 of life with me.
Meeting people from different backgrounds provides a 27 opportunity. You can learn from those people. 28 , one of the great advantages of colleges in the United States is that students meet, work with, and engage in discussions with people from different geographic and cultural backgrounds.
But there is another advantage to this kind of socializing: It is rich in 29 . Like traveling to a new place, where you can’t really know what your experience will be like, meeting 30 strangers keeps you from falling into 31 expectations. You don’t know whether the people you meet will share your opinions, whether they’ll defer to (听从) you or 32 the conversation, or whether they’ll laugh at your jokes or make you laugh.
I think this may be part of the attraction of “ 33 box” socializing, where people sign up to be matched with strangers for dinner, say, or a hike. When you sign up for such an event, you don’t know what kind of conversations you might have, or how you might interact with the other people who sign up. But that is the point. Sometimes it is good to 34 the unexpected. If you have the chance, you might give it a try — meet someone surprising, but stay 35 , of course.

Section B
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Phonics, which involves sounding out words syllable (音节) by syllable, is the best way to teach children to read. But in many classrooms, this can be a dirty word. So much so that some teachers have had to sneak phonics teaching materials into the classroom. Most American children are taught to read in a way that study after study has found to be wrong.
The consequences of this are striking. Less than half of all American adults were proficient readers in 2017. American fourth graders rank 15th on the Progress in International Literacy Study, an international exam.
America is stuck in a debate about teaching children to read that has been going on for decades. Some advocate teaching symbol-sound relationships (the sound k can be spelled as c, k, ck, or ch), known as phonics. Others support an immersive approach (using pictures of a cat to learn the word cat), known as “whole language”. Most teachers today, almost three out of four according to a survey by the EdWeek Research Centre in 2019, use a mix called “balanced literacy“. This combination of methods is ineffective. “You can’t sprinkle in a little phonics,” says Tenette Smith, executive director of elementary education and reading at Mississippi’s education department. “It has to be systematic and explicitly taught.”
Mississippi, often behind in social policy, has set an example here. In a state once notorious for its low reading scores, the Mississippi state legislature passed new literacy standards in 2013. Since then Mississippi has seen remarkable gains. Its fourth graders have moved from 49th (out of 50 states) to 29th on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, a nationwide exam. In 2019 it was the only state to improve its scores. For the first time since measurement began, Mississippi’s pupils are now average readers, a remarkable achievement in such a poor state.
Mississippi’s success is attributed to implementing reading methods supported by a body of research known as the science of reading. In 1997 Congress requested the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Department of Education to convene a National Reading Panel to end the “reading wars” and synthesize the evidence. The panel found that phonics, along with explicit instruction in phonemic (音位的) awareness, fluency and comprehension, worked best.
Yet over two decades on, “balanced literacy” is still being taught in classrooms. But advances in statistics and brain imaging have disproved the whole-language method. To the teacher who is a proficient reader, literacy seems like a natural process that requires educated guessing, rather than the deliberate process emphasized by phonics. Teachers can imagine that they learned to read through osmosis(潜移默化)when they were children. Without proper training, they bring this to classrooms.
36.What has America been witnessing for decades?
A.An obsession with innovating teaching methodologies of reading.
B.An enduring debate over the approach to teaching children to read.
C.An increasing concern with many children’s inadequacy in literacy.
D.An ever-forceful advocacy of a combined method for teaching reading.
37.Why does Tenette Smith think a combination of teaching methods is ineffective?
A.Elementary school children will be frustrated when taught with several methods combined.
B.Phonics has to be systematically applied and clearly taught to achieve the desired effect.
C.Sprinkling in a little phonics deters the progress of even adequately motivated children.
D.Balanced literacy fails to sustain children’s interest in developing a good reading habit.
38.What does the author say Mississippi’s success is attributed to?
A.Convening a National Reading Panel to synthesize research evidence.
B.Placing sufficient emphasis upon both fluency and comprehension.
C.Adopting scientifically grounded approaches to teaching reading.
D.Obtaining support from Congress to upgrade teaching methods.
39.What have advances in statistics and brain imaging proved ineffective?
A.The teaching of symbol-sound relationships.
B.Explicit instruction in phonemic awareness.
C.Efforts to end the reading wars.
D.The immersive approach.

As fall approaches, new students will arrive on college campuses with all kinds of things: luggage and school supplies, mini fridges and sports equipment. Experts suggest that parents and teenagers take proactive steps now to help plan for and preserve mental well-being during the big transition to college.
Connect early with the counseling center
Consider contacting the college’s counseling center before you arrive on campus. This is particularly important for those who already have an emotional disorder or other mental health concern.
Check to see if the counseling center provides off-campus referrals, and assemble a short list of potential providers to have in your back pocket ahead of arriving at school. This is a good practice for any student, as it may be necessary to seek outside support if the school’s counseling center develops a waiting list.
Embrace other types of support
There are many resources available to students besides the counseling center. Tutoring, peer advising, student activities and career services can all help support a student’s emotional well-being.
Connecting with other students is especially important, the experts said. Spend some time looking at the school’s extracurricular activities and clubs. Consider having a roommate even if you have the option of living alone, Mrs. Martin said. It can broaden your social network and help buffer stressors.
Practice basic wellness habits
In the summer before college, teenagers should take stock of how they’re eating, sleeping and socializing, the experts said, especially given that they may have formed some unhealthy habits during the pandemic. If a student’s basic needs are neglected, it becomes more difficult to cultivate a healthier mental state.
Learning how to support yourself and taking steps to become more independent can also make the college transition less jarring. Before arriving on campus, practice managing a budget; advocating for yourself with a teacher, doctor or coach; or spending time outside of your childhood home — perhaps with a relative, or at summer camp.
40.According to the passage, experts suggest the following ways EXCEPT ________ for students to be emotionally well.
A.living with their peers. B.developing good personal habits.
C.taking part in after-school activities. D.always seeking advice at school counseling centers.
41.The underlined word “jarring” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.
A.smooth. B.gradual. C.sudden. D.annoying.
42.The passage is intended for ________.
A.senior college students seeking advice on mental health.
B.university students majoring in psychology.
C.students heading to college in the coming autumn.
D.would-be college students suffering mental disorder.

For centuries, two of the most intriguing questions about Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” were “Who?” and “When?” A discovery made at Heidelberg University in 2005 pretty much answered both. A note written in a manuscript in the library confirmed the account of da Vinci’s first biographer, Giorgio Vasari: that the sitter was a merchant’s wife, Lisa Gherardini. The note also helped date the masterpiece to between 1503 and 1506.
A third conundrum —“Where?”— is still in dispute. But a French engineer, Pascal Cotte, declared that he and a collaborator had identified the landscape in the background of the painting. Mr Cotte believed that the artist was plausibly depicting a part of his homeland Tuscany — one that keenly interested him at the time. According to this theory, Da Vinci represented the area not as it was, but as, in an unrealised scheme, he intended it to be.
Mr Cotte, who was asked by the Louvre (where the “Mona Lisa” hangs) to create a digital image of the painting, is the inventor of the multispectral camera: a device that can detect not only the hidden drawing below the surface of an oil painting, but also any intermediate layers of work that may exist. It was among these, under what appears to be a pointed rock, that he found a preparatory sketch (草图) showing that Da Vinci intended it to represent a tower.
The landscape of the “Mona Lisa” also includes a huge overhanging cliff. That is similar to one that Da Vinci included in a sketch of a fortress (堡垒) fought over by Pisa and Florence in the war in 1503 (around the time he was painting “Mona Lisa”). The fortress with the nearby cliff — and a tower, known as the Caprona tower—all overlook the river Arno as it snakes from Florence to Pisa. All three also feature in drawings made by Da Vinci to illustrate a plan about which, says Mr Cotte, he became “obsessive”.
This involved diverting the river Arno to cut off Pisa’s water supply and give Florence access to the Mediterranean. In the early 1500s, with the two places at war, the idea was under active consideration. Mr Cotte argues that a channel winding through countryside at the right of the “Mona Lisa” is too wide to be a road and is instead the dried-up bed of the river Arno as Da Vinci envisaged it once his plan had been adopted.
It never was. But if Mr Cotte’s theory is right, it might just explain why “Mona Lisa”, a Florentine, wears such a contented smile.
43.Mr Cotte reached his conclusion about the “Mona Lisa” by __________.
A.referring to the note written in a manuscript
B.comparing the pointed rock with the tower in the painting
C.analyzing the tower in the hidden layer of the painting
D.comparing the landscape in the painting to paintings in the late 1500s
44.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Da Vinci’s plan gained attention because of the war.
B.People from Florenceout off the water supply in Pisa.
C.Da Vinci was obsessed with painting cliffs and rivers.
D.A tower, a cliff, and a fortress are shown at the right of the “Mona Lisa”.
45.What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “envisaged”?
A.Diverted. B.Painted. C.Imagined. D.Recorded.
46.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Why did the “Mona Lisa” smile?
B.The techniques behind the “Mona Lisa”.
C.What makes the “Mona Lisa” charming?
D.Where did the “Mona Lisa” smile?

Is necessity the mother of invention?
One common view regarding inventions is expressed in the saying “Necessity is the mother of invention.” That is, inventions supposedly arise when a society has an unfulfilled demand: some technology is widely recognized to be unsatisfactory or limiting. 47 Some inventor finally comes up with a solution superior to the existing, unsatisfactory technology. Society adopts the solution if it is on par with the society’s values and other technologies.
48 In 1942, in the middle of World War II, the U.S. government set up the Manhattan Project with the explicit goal of inventing the technology required to build an atomic bomb before Nazi Germany could do so. That project succeeded in three years, at a cost of $2 billion.
Familiar cases like this deceive (欺骗) us into assuming that other major inventions were also responses to perceived needs. However, many or most inventions were developed by people driven by curiosity, in the absence of an initial demand for the product they had in mind. 49 Only after it had been in use for a considerable time did consumers come to feel that they ‘needed’ it. Still other devices, invented to serve one purpose, eventually found most of their use for other, unanticipated purposes. It may come as a surprise to learn that these inventions in search of a use include most of the major technological breakthroughs of modern times, ranging from the airplane and automobile, to the internal combustion engine and electric light bulb. Thus, invention is often the mother of necessity, rather than vice versa.
A good example is the history of Thomas Edison’s phonograph (留声机), the most original invention of the greatest inventor of modern times. When Edison built his first phonograph in 1877, he published an article proposing ten uses to which his invention might be put. They included preserving the last words of dying people, recording books for blind people to hear, announcing clock time, and teaching spelling. 50 Only after about 20 years did Edison reluctantly admit that the main use of his phonograph was to record and play music.
Even inventions that meet the need for which they were initially designed may later prove more valuable at meeting unforeseen needs. While James Watt designed his steam engine to pump water from mines, it soon was supplying power to cotton mills, then (with much greater profit) propelling locomotives and boats.
A.Once a device had been invented, the inventor then had to find an application for it.
B.Some inventors follow the trends of the times, focusing primarily on being innovative and unconventional.
C.Would-be inventors, motivated by the prospect of money or fame, perceive the need and try to meet it.
D.Quite a few inventions do comply with this commonsense view of necessity as invention’s mother.
E.Although things have been invented through technological innovation, there are still many imperfect aspects that need to be improved through user trials.
F.Reproduction was not high on his list of priorities.
IV. Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Building a Greener Future
Which is more important when designing a building: beauty or function?
At the start of the twentieth century, Louis Sullivan, one of the creators of modern architecture, said that ‘form follows function’. However, many people disagree with this and feel that beauty is a more important factor in architectural design. In the modern world, it seems that most architects combine both ideas: aiming to create buildings which are both functional and beautiful.
The reason for creating a building in the first place is clearly very important. For example, when building an airport terminal, you need to think of the needs of passengers as well as planes. Passengers want to get to their plane as quickly as they can, and planes need to be parked in the most efficient way possible.
Beauty, however, is also clearly important when constructing a building. Living or working in an ugly place creates a depressing and uninspiring environment. In contrast, an attractive building can make people feel happier and increase their motivation to work. There is also a wider responsibility to society which architects have to consider. Beautiful, well-constructed buildings are a symbol of a civilized society.
In theory, there seems to be no reason why architecture cannot be both functional and beautiful. Yet in practice, this can cause problems. The Modern International style of the 1920s and 1930s, an example of which is the Guggenheim Museum in New York, was supposed to combine beauty with function. Many consider the museum’s white spiral ramp beautiful, but there have been complaints that it is impractical, as it is difficult to stand back to view the art. Also, the ramp is so narrow that it can become overcrowded. It seems that even this celebrated design has problems with functionality.
If architects focus only on function, buildings may be cold, ugly and uninteresting. On the other hand, if they focus only on making it look beautiful, the building may be completely impractical. Therefore, combining these two ideas is necessary to create the perfect piece of architecture.

1.having 2.to maintain 3.closest 4.however 5.whom 6.what 7.updates 8.to 9.the 10.reduced
mention doing sth.
根据“how hard it can be”可知,此处用固定句型“it can be+形容词+to do sth.”
空处作修饰friends的定语,结合下一句的“My husband is now the person I spend the most time with.”

根据下文“I figured I’d give it a try.(我就决定试一试)”可知,此处是指作者读到了这种模式的“好处”,所以才决定试一试。
根据下文“I spent per day on the phone dropped 40 percent, to four hours and 40 minutes per day(我每天花在手机上的时间减少了40%,降至每天4小时40分钟)”可知,作者减少了看手机的时间,说明对看手机已经没有“迫切的”需求了。

根据第三段“America is stuck in a debate about teaching children to read that has been going on for decades.(美国陷入一场关于儿童阅读教学方式的争论,这场争论已经持续了数十年。)”
根据第三段“ “You can’t sprinkle in a little phonics,” says Tenette Smith, executive director of elementary education and reading at Mississippi’s education department. “It has to be systematic and explicitly taught.”(密西西比州教育厅初等教育与阅读项目主管特内特・史密斯表示:“自然拼读教学不能零散穿插,必须形成体系,并且进行清晰直白的专项讲授。”)”
根据第五段“Mississippi’s success is attributed to implementing reading methods supported by a body of research known as the science of reading.(密西西比州阅读教育取得的成效,归功于推行了一套有大量研究支撑、名为阅读科学的阅读教学方法。)”
根据第三段“Others support an immersive approach (using pictures of a cat to learn the word cat), known as “whole language”.(另一派支持沉浸式教学法,也就是所谓的“全语言教学法”,例如借助猫咪图片学习cat这个单词。)”以及第六段“But advances in statistics and brain imaging have disproved the whole-language method.(但统计学与脑成像技术的进步已经推翻了全语言教学法。)”

Connect early with the counseling center部分第一段中“Consider contacting the college’s counseling center before you arrive on campus. (考虑在到校前就主动联系学校的心理咨询中心)”、Embrace other types of support部分第二段中“Spend some time looking at the school’s extracurricular activities and clubs. Consider having a roommate even if you have the option of living alone, Mrs. Martin said. It can broaden your social network and help buffer stressors.
根据画线词的上文“Learning how to support yourself and taking steps to become more independent (学会独立自理并逐步提升自主能力)”和下文“Before arriving on campus, practice managing a budget; advocating for yourself with a teacher, doctor or coach; or spending time outside of your childhood home — perhaps with a relative, or at summer camp. (在入校前,你可以尝试练习这些生活技能:管理个人预算、向老师、医生或者教练表达自身需求,或是离开成长环境独立生活——比如暂住亲戚家,或是参加夏令营)”可知,练习管理预算、表达自身需求等生活技能,从而培养独立性的目的是减少适应大学生活时面临的剧烈冲击,画线词jarring意思应该是“突兀的,不协调的”,与sudden“突然的”语义最接近。故选C项。
42.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“As fall approaches, new students will arrive on college campuses with all kinds of things: luggage and school supplies, mini fridges and sports equipment. Experts suggest that parents and teenagers take proactive steps now to help plan for and preserve mental well-being during the big transition to college. (随着秋季临近,新生们将带着各式各样的物品涌入大学校园:行李箱和学习用品、迷你冰箱和运动装备。专家建议,家长和青少年现在就应该采取积极措施,帮助规划和维持心理健康,以应对大学阶段的重大过渡)”可知,文章提供的心理健康准备指南主要针对的是秋季即将入学的大学新生,以帮助他们平稳适应大学生活。故选C项。

【答案】43.C 44.A 45.C 46.D
根据第三段中的“It was among these, under what appears to be a pointed rock, that he found a preparatory sketch (草图) showing that da Vinci intended it to represent a tower.(正是在这些涂层中,在一块看似尖石的下方,科特发现了一幅预备草图,显示达·芬奇原本打算将其画成一座塔。)”
根据倒数第二段中的“This involved diverting the river Arno to cut off Pisa’s water supply and give Florence access to the Mediterranean. In the early 1500s, with the two places at war, the idea was under active consideration.(该计划涉及改道阿尔诺河,以切断比萨的水源供应,同时让佛罗伦萨获得通往地中海的通道。16世纪初,这两个地方正处于战争状态,这一计划当时正在被积极考虑。)”可知,达·芬奇的计划因战争而受到关注。
45.词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段中的“once his plan had been adopted(一旦他的计划被采纳)”和最后一段“It never was.(但这一计划从未实现。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“A third conundrum—“Where?”—is still in dispute. But a French engineer, Pascal Cotte, declared that he and a collaborator had identified the landscape in the background of the painting. Mr Cotte believed that the artist was plausibly depicting a part of his homeland Tuscany—one that keenly interested him at the time.(第三个谜题——“画中背景是何处?”——至今仍存在争议。但法国工程师帕斯卡·科特(Pascal Cotte)宣称,他和一位合作者已识别出画中背景的风景。科特先生认为,这位艺术家很可能是在描绘他的家乡托斯卡纳的一部分——当时他对此地极为感兴趣。)”和第四段中的“The landscape of the “Mona Lisa” also includes a huge overhanging cliff.(《蒙娜丽莎》的背景中还包括一座巨大的悬岩。)”

【答案】47.C 48.D 49.A 50.F
根据上文“That is, inventions supposedly arise when a society has an unfulfilled demand: some technology is widely recognized to be unsatisfactory or limiting.(也就是说,当一个社会存在未被满足的需求时,发明就会出现:某些技术被广泛认为是不尽如人意或具有局限性的)”以及下文“Some inventor finally comes up with a solution superior to the existing, unsatisfactory technology.(最终,一些发明家会想出一个比现有的、不尽如人意的技术更好的解决方案)”可知,此处应衔接“未被满足的需求”与“发明家解决需求”,C选项“Would-be inventors, motivated by the prospect of money or fame, perceive the need and try to meet it.(未来的发明家们,受金钱或名声前景的激励,察觉到这种需求并试图满足它)”中的the need指代上文的unfulfilled demand, try to meet it引出下文“想出解决方案”,符合语境。故选C项。
48.根据下文“In 1942, in the middle of World War II, the U.S. government set up the Manhattan Project with the explicit goal of inventing the technology required to build an atomic bomb before Nazi Germany could do so. That project succeeded in three years, at a cost of $2 billion.(1942年,二战中期,美国政府启动了曼哈顿计划,明确目标是在纳粹德国之前发明制造原子弹所需的技术。该项目历时三年成功,耗资20亿美元)”可知,该例子是为了证明“需求催生发明”这一观点,因此上文应先提出“有部分发明符合这一观点”,D选项“Quite a few inventions do comply with this commonsense view of necessity as invention’s mother.(相当多的发明确实符合“需求是发明之母”这一常识性观点)”中的this commonsense view指代前文核心观点,下文例子正是对该句的佐证,符合语境。故选D项。
49.根据上文“However, many or most inventions were developed by people driven by curiosity, in the absence of an initial demand for the product they had in mind.(然而,许多或大多数发明是由好奇心驱使的人开发的,他们心中的产品最初并没有需求)”以及下文“Only after it had been in use for a considerable time did consumers come to feel that they “needed” it.(只有在使用了相当长的一段时间后,消费者才开始觉得他们“需要”它)”可知,此处应衔接“发明先出现,后找到需求”,A选项“Once a device had been invented, the inventor then had to find an application for it.(一旦一种设备被发明出来,发明者就必须为它找到应用场景)”中的invented承接上文inventions were developed, find an application引出下文“消费者逐渐产生需求”,符合语境。故选A项。
50.根据上文“When Edison built his first phonograph in 1877, he published an article proposing ten uses to which his invention might be put. They included preserving the last words of dying people, recording books for blind people to hear, announcing clock time, and teaching spelling.(1877年,爱迪生制造出第一台留声机时,他发表了一篇文章,提出了他的发明可能的十种用途。其中包括保存临终者的遗言、为盲人录制可听的书籍、报时和教拼写)”以及下文“Only after about 20 years did Edison reluctantly admit that the main use of his phonograph was to record and play music.(大约20年后,爱迪生才不情愿地承认,他的留声机的主要用途是录制和播放音乐)”可知,此处应体现爱迪生最初提出的用途中没有“录制和播放音乐”,F选项“Reproduction was not high on his list of priorities.(音乐复制在他的优先事项列表中并不靠前)”中的Reproduction指代“录制和播放音乐”,呼应下文的主要用途,符合语境。故选F项。
51.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There is a question that which is more important when an architect designs a building: beauty or function.(要点一) Function is important because it makes the buildings more practical.(要点二) However, beauty is also important because an attractive building can make people feel better.(要点三) It seems that buildings can be functional and beautiful in theory but not in practice.(要点四) Therefore, the perfect building should combine beauty and function.(要点五)

①There is a question that which is more important when an architect designs a building: beauty or function.
②Function is important because it makes the buildings more practical.
③However, beauty is also important because an attractive building can make people feel better.
④It seems that buildings can be functional and beautiful in theory but not in practice.
⑤Therefore, the perfect building should combine beauty and function.
【点睛】[高分句型1] There is a question that which is more important when an architect designs a building: beauty or function.(运用一个复杂的主从复合句提出文章的论点,对第一段和第二段进行了高度概括,“that”引导的同位语从句讲述了论点,“when”引导的时间状语从句概括了第二段内容。)
[高分句型2]:However, beauty is also important because an attractive building can make people feel better.(主从复合句概括了第四段内容,其中“however”的使用与前一论点构成转折关系,“because”引导原因状语从句,表达非常高级。)
[高分句型3]:It seems that buildings can be functional and beautiful in theory but not in practice.(用一个复杂的主从复合句概括了第五段内容。
V. Translation
Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Do you know who should be to blame for this serious accident?
翻译为Do you know...?know后面跟who引导的宾语从句;“应该”用情态动词should,“为……负责”用be to blame for表示,情态动词后用动词原形,“这次严重的事故”翻译为this serious accident。 Do you know who should be to blame for this serious accident?
(which) (汉译英)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
This app, which is easy to operate and powerful, is deeply loved by young people.
的喜爱”可用动词短语be deeply loved by,“年轻人”可用名词短语young people;从句中which代替先行词this app作主语,“操作简便”可用形容词短语be easy to do和动词operate搭配,“功能强大”可用形容词powerful。
____________________________________________________________________________________________
The second time we met, he sent me a newly-published book, with a letter of thanks enclosed.
The second time we met, he sent me a newly-published book, enclosing a letter of thanks.
The second time we met, he sent me a newly-published book, with a letter of thanks enclosed./The second time we met, he sent me a newly-published book, enclosing a letter of thanks.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
In the modern society of information, many people are buried in processing endless data, often neglecting deeper thinking.
