Part of STEM learning is seeing and doing, and then recording and analyzing the results. But not all
online or homeschool programs are set up to accommodate science experiments or other STEM learning
activities.Let's take a look at a few mind-blowing labs that can help bring STEM topics alive for your child's
online school experience.
Weather Laboratories
To make learning about weather accessible and fun,the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA)created a lot of informative weather activities and virtual labs they recommend for
students and educators. In fact, their weather science content for kids features a Weather Lab application that
allows middle school students to predict weather patterns, and learn what happens when ocean currents and
air masses interact
Simulations(模拟)for Science and Math
It is a project of the University of Colorado Boulder and one of the richest single databases of online
science interactives and virtual labs.Investigate more than 150 physics, chemistry, math, biology, and Earth
science topics.Available in dozens of languages, the interactives are searchable by grade level, subject, and
accessibility
Space Exploration Simulations
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)features many STEM learning activities
for students in grades K-12.The interactive simulations are also gamified and make learning engaging and
fun for your child. The app allows users to explore the universe and unlock stories of trailblazing scientists
and their contributions to space exploration and science.

It was December 27th,2004 in Malaysia.People were in a holiday mood for various reasons. It was the
day after Christmas,a Sunday.On Penang Island,hotels were fully-booked by holiday-makers from home
and abroad. The Dillon family had come all the way from Europe to shelter from the coldness of winter.
They were up early to swim in the sea and eat a late breakfast in the Crystal Restaurant on Fisherman's Pier.
While enjoying their Asian breakfast in a room facing the water,Mr.and Mrs.Dillon saw a strange sight
through the glass windows.People on the beach were pointing at the sea which was crashing quickly into the
horizon. Some were excitedly picking up shells and fish that had been exposed (when a Japanese man
at the next table shouting"Tsunami!Tsunami!".He jumped from his seat, waving wildly to everyone else,
and rushed for the exit. The couple sensed that they were in danger.
Suddenly a huge wall of water came crashing through the restaurant windows, knocking over everyone.
The couple held their son's hands. However, the boy's little hand slid out of his parents and the waves tossed
him forcefully, leaving him in danger.Luckily, when his head was seen rising above the water,he was pulled
up in time.Just as forcefully, the waves pulled back, breaking whatever it could.Fortunately, everyone had
run onto drier ground. They rushed out to the street, shaken by the tsunami. The shocked boy burst into tears.

For a long time, psychologists believed in"catharsis theory,"or the idea that it's better to release
negative emotions than hold onto them. But back in 2002,Brad Bushman,a professor of communication at
the Ohio State University, published a study that questioned that logic, saying that venting ()"is the
worst thing you can do"when you're mad and it's "adding more fuel to the fire."
Focusing on a frustrating conversation can blow out of proportion relatively minor annoyances, which is
unhealthy, says Jesse Cougle,a psychology professor studying anger at Florida State University.
The problem is that when you're furious ()it feels better to shout angrily than it does to take
some centering deep breaths.Bushman has seen that in his research.Even though activities like hitting a
punching bag don't actually lessen anger,"75%of people report feeling better"after they do it,he says. The
same is often true for venting to a friend. It feels great to have someone support your perspective.
Can something that feels so good really be so wrong?Bushman says it's not always a bad thing to get
something off your chest.Talking through a negative feeling with the goal of understanding why something
bothered you and how to better respond in the future, such as with a therapist, can be beneficial,he says. But
venting becomes less helpful,Cougle says, when it's mean-spirited-when you repeat the same thing you've
done many times, keeping yourself stuck in that past anger without trying to move past it.
When you feel yourself getting stuck in the trap of venting, look for healthier coping strategies. If yoga
and meditation aren't your thing, try a quick shift in perspective.Bushman's research supports the
"fly-on-the-wall"technique,which challenges angry people to imagine themselves as a third party observing
the situation that made them angry. And finally, don't underestimate the impact of anger-that is,getting
angry when you're hungry.Science suggests it's a real phenomenon. So next time you feel yourself gearing
up for a venting session, think of grabbing a snack and taking a few deep breaths instead.
8.What is the traditional belief of venting?
A.Nothing can be worse than venting.
B.Venting may lead to worse emotions.
C.Letting anger out always works well.
D.Releasing negative feelings is logical.
9.What does the underlined word "that"in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The problem of venting while angry
B.The benefit of taking some deep breaths.
C.The temporary relief from venting anger.
D.The lessened anger after hitting something.
10.Why is the"fly-on-the-wall"technique mentioned in paragraph 5?
A.To challenge angry people.
B.To replace yoga and meditation.
C.To illustrate change in perspective.
D.To observe the situation as a third party.
11.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The psychological risk of venting and its influence.
B.The harm of venting anger and its coping techniques.
C.The science of hunger-related anger and its solutions.
D.The development of catharsis theory and its modern debates.

Is there food on Mars?Almost certainly not.But astronauts need to eat every day,and sending food to
space is super expensive-one meal can cost $10,000.Thus,finding a way to feed them on the trip to Mars
is a really big challenge.
Now,UK-based researchers think they have the solution.Dr Rodrigo, the lead researcher, says
astronauts could grow their own food while flying to Mars. These researchers are carrying out a project for
astronauts to produce food in a smart and Earth-friendly way, using a few special cells (and mini cell
factories to create useful products.
The project has now been tested in space when a spaceship took cells into orbit. The cells were in a mini
space lab.It is like a small science lab in a box that lets scientists do experiments under microgravity,
without the usual limits of space research. In the space lab, cells grew and produced a particular vitamin
)"This material could be collected and eaten by astronauts in the space,"Dr Rodrigo said,"but the
space lab is hard to bring. So we need to rethink how it may look like."
Dr Rodrigo and his team hope even a short time in microgravity will show whether their cells can
produce different kinds of food, from milk products to ice cream. They also hope the technology will be
applied to a wide range of industries."In the future, when we build a base on the Moon,we'll need space labs
like this to help people live there for a long time,"he said.
12.What makes feeding astronauts on the trip to Mars challenging?
A.High cost of space meals
B.Limited space for food.
C.Long transportation time.
D.Uncertainty of cell growth.
13.What is the purpose of the project carried out by researchers?
A.To find food on Mars.
B.To create food in space.
C.To explore life on Mars.
D.To send astronauts to space.
14.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The role of vitamin in space.
B.The health problems of astronauts.
C.The design work of spaceship.
D.The test of the project in space lab.

A.Easy to bring to space.
B.Important for the Moon bases.
C.Expensive to build in space.
D.Difficult for humans to produce.

Shyness is a feeling of discomfort you may have in social settings, preventing you from reaching
personal or social goals. Are you a shy person?Does the thought of having a conversation with a stranger
make your stomach turn?16.Just like any undesirable characteristics, you can tackle shyness
with the right tools.
17
Socially anxious individuals frequently have negative thoughts running through their
heads."I look awkward,""No one is talking to me,"or"I am going to look like a fool,"are all these thoughts.
As you can probably tell, these thoughts are all negative and will only serve to keep you feeling shy and
self-conscious.You can break the habit of negative thoughts by becoming aware of when you are falling
victim to them and by challenging their logic.
Be approachable.Would you approach somebody with a bitter expression on their face or with their
head down on their desk? Not likely. Our body language can allow others to make assumptions about us
before we even speak.18.Sit leaning forward in the direction of the person you are
talking to,keep your legs and arms open, and maintain a relaxed posture.
Give sincere compliments )No need to be over the top. Some of the greatest conversations
started with"I like your shirt.Did you get it at that store?"19.
What's more,you are guaranteed
to walk away with a smile because complimenting others makes you feel good too.
Take small steps.Try to make progress in small, easily broken down, and identifiable steps. This gives
you something new to learn every time, and you can proudly keep track of progress.Keep doing things like
having conversations with new people and seeking out opportunities to connect with others.20.
A.Adjust your mindset.
B.Focus your attention outward.
C.Feelings like these are common and are easy to overcome with practice.
D.Open body language sends a message to others that you are willing to interact.
E.Celebrate small wins, whether it is giving a few compliments or not
F.They give others a positive impression of you because you made them feel good.
G.Your body language determines how people perceive you and how you perform.

Gideon and his mother were visiting the supermarket for their weekly shopping when he found a leather
wallet. He picked it up curiously and found there was a coffee bean pattern on the surface, which reminded
him of his own experience working part-time at a coffee shop during college.
Besides that,he found a significant amount of cash and a business card with a phone number on it.
Gideon had tolerated a poor life along with his mother. Each meal was the result of his mother's hard work.
Gideon had been struggling with unemployment while actively searching for a job
"Should I keep the wallet?"he wondered, the thought of financial relief crossing his mind."I could
surely use the money."Yet,a wave of guilt washed over him."But Mother would be annoyed if she knew,"
he thought, holding the wallet tightly.Noticing his hesitation,Gideon's mother asked what was wrong. He
told her about the wallet and his internal struggle. With a gentle but firm voice, she reminded him of the
values,"We don't keep what isn't ours,Gideon."
Gideon's face turned red with a mix of emotions."We have bills without steady income, and this could
be a turning point,"he responded. His mother acknowledged their difficulties but encouraged him to think
about the right thing to do,saying,"Returning it could bring you unexpected good luck."
Finally, with resolve,Gideon decided to call the number on the business card. The owner was an elderly
man who was very grateful when he met them to take the wallet back.He explained that the money inside
was prepared for his son Andrew, which was crucial for his new business-a coffee shop he was planning
to open.As Gideon walked away,he felt a sense of fulfillment(from doing the right thing, but he

Dear Mr.Brown,
I'm Li Hua from Class 1,Senior 2.I'm writing to share my thoughts regarding whether you should
provide detailed class notes after lectures.Honestly,I believe it would be greatly beneficial to us students if
you could do so.
One key reason is that if we have access to detailed class notes,we will be able to better process what is
being delivered. That way,we are likely to engage more actively in class interactions.Better yet, your
detailed notes ensure the accuracy of the information received, which will surely ease our concerns about
missing important points.
I'm really looking forward to seeing our class thrive with your helpful resources.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
A few days later,Gideon received an unexpected call.It was the elderly man from the supermarket. He
thanked Gideon again for returning the wallet and then asked,"Are you currently looking for work?"
Surprised,Gideon replied that he was.The man explained that his son Andrew was in the process of opening
a coffee shop and needed someone with experience in cafe operations."You clearly have integrity,"the man
said,"and I believe you'd be a great fit."He offered Gideon an interview. With hope rising in his heart,
Gideon accepted.
Gideon was promoted to manager of Andrew's coffee shop soon. After a successful interview and a few
months of hard work,Gideon became an essential part of the team. His knowledge from working in a cafe
before, combined with his honesty and strong work ethic, made him stand out. When Andrew saw how well
Gideon handled both customers and staff,he decided to promote him.Gideon felt proud and grateful. What
once seemed like a simple act of returning a lost wallet had opened a door to a new opportunity-one built
on trust,effort,and good fortune
