(2026·北京·高考真题)Smells are all around us. What we know as a scent (气味) is a collection of natural or artificial airborne chemicals released from objects. But smell is often overlooked and undervalued. So, as climate change and biodiversity loss threaten natural scents, many people may not even notice.
Whether or not we pay attention to the world’s “scentscape”, heat and pollution are causing it to shift. As temperatures rise, man-made substances release more scent molecules (分子), and biodiversity loss due to climate change threatens the plants that scent the environment. “If you go to a forest, you have a given environment and temperature. If that temperature goes a little bit high, the profile of the chemical components in the air changes,” since temperature can affect the amount of smell-carrying gas particles (粒子) released from substances, explains John Smith, a chemical engineer. “And therefore, the perception of how the forest smells changes.”
That effect extends beyond forests. Snow — already threatened by a warming climate — absorbs different chemicals from the atmosphere as temperatures rise, which changes its cold-clean scent. Warmer conditions can intensify smells, leading the snow to smell more unpleasant and potentially gather more pollutants.
Climate change is also quickening the loss of biodiversity, threatening to erase certain smells entirely. When plants disappear, their scents become more difficult to produce.
Some scents are linked to cultural heritage. A recent study reported that native communities in Peru noticed a change in the smell of the Amazon River due to industrial pollution. Over generations, communities became desensitised to increasingly smelly rivers, a sign of broader ecosystem degradation. At the same time, in some Amazonian belief systems, declining water quality and the unpleasant smells will lead to the dispersal (消散) of the river’s spiritual beings. The damage to the scentscape could result in harm to both health and spiritual practice.
Even though we have other valuable things endangered by climate change, like food access, there is also an element of cultural identity, cultural survival, and history. If we don’t look at it, we lose all the richness behind it.

(2025·北京·高考真题)The call to “know yourself” has been there since ancient times, but our sense of self doesn’t always match what others perceive. Considering the stories we tell about ourselves can help us to change our minds for better.
For many years, psychologists saw identity as a combination of someone’s values, beliefs, goals and social roles. Then, in the 1980s, Bob Johnson created the life story model of identity, in which he proposes that, as we go through life, these core features are built in with our memories to create a personal story through which we understand our lives.
Our life story is something that starts coming together in our teenage years, when we begin to organise our lives into chapters around key events or life changes, and begin to see ourselves as both the central character and, to a varying extent, the story’s author. People with more consistent stories tend to have a stronger sense of identity, and they feel their life has more meaning, direction and sense of purpose. Such people show greater overall life satisfaction, too.
Johnson has also investigated the link between well-being and certain story themes. He discovered that whether someone describes having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of a person’s mental health. Another key theme involves finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events. “People could talk about gaining knowledge or personal growth,” says Johnson. His research shows that this is often missing for people with mental health conditions. The good news is that there is evidence we can learn to change our own story.
Lisa Green, another researcher, sounds a few notes of caution (谨慎). For instance, hearing about the power of redemptive (拯救性的) stories, many people may feel forced to find a positive angle on horrible events. She says that Western culture already pushes people to look for the silver lining behind every cloud.
If you want to turn over a new leaf, though, one top tip is that it helps to choose a significant date that signals the start of a new “chapter”. Contrary to popular doubt, resolutions made on 1 January are more effective for this reason. So, whether your goal is saving money or getting fit, there is no better time to become the author of our own destiny (命运).

Here, norms (规范) were unwritten and rarely expressed clearly, but were well understood and taken to heart. Dishonest and violent behaviours were disapproved of; leadership, marriage and interactions with other groups were loosely governed by traditions. Conflict was often resolved in musical battles. Because arguing angrily leads to chaos, it was strongly discouraged. With life in the unforgiving Northern Canada being so demanding, the Inuit’s practical approach to morality made good sense.
The similarity of moral virtues across cultures is striking, even though the relative ranking of the virtues may vary with a social group’s history and environment. Typically, cruelty and cheating are discouraged, while cooperation, humbleness and courage are praised. These universal norms far pre-date the concept of any moralising religion or written law. Instead, they are rooted in the similarity of basic human needs and our shared mechanisms for learning and problem solving. Our social instincts (本能) include the intense desire to belong. The approval of others is rewarding, while their disapproval is strongly disliked. These social emotions prepare our brains to shape our behaviour according to the norms and values of our family and our community. More generally, social instincts motivate us to learn how to behave in a socially complex world.
The mechanism involves a repurposed reward system originally used to develop habits important for self-care. Our brains use the system to acquire behavioural patterns regarding safe routes home, efficient food gathering and dangers to avoid. Good habits save time, energy and sometimes your life. Good social habits do something similar in a social context. We learn to tell the truth, even when lying is self-serving; we help a grandparent even when it is inconvenient. We acquire what we call a sense of right and wrong.
Social benefits are accompanied by social demands: we must get along, but not put up with too much. Hence self-discipline is advantageous. In humans, a greatly enlarged brain boosts self-control, just as it boosts problem-solving skills in the social as well as the physical world. These abilities are strengthened by our capacity for language, which allows social practices to develop in extremely unobvious ways.

The reason is simple: we know of just one type of life and it’s challenging to do science with a sample size of one. The field of artificial life-called ALife for short — is the systematic attempt to spell out life’s fundamental principles. Many of these practitioners, so-called ALifers, think that somehow making life is the surest way to really understand what life is.
So far no one has convincingly made artificial life. This track record makes ALife a ripe target for criticism, such as declarations of the field’s doubtful scientific value. Alan Smith, a complexity scientist, is tired of such complaints. Asking about “the point” of ALife might be, well, missing the point entirely, he says. “The existence of a living system is not about the use of anything.” Alan says. “Some people ask me, ‘So what’s the worth of artificial life?’ Do you ever think, ‘What is the worth of your grandmother?’”
As much as many ALifers hate emphasizing their research’s applications, the attempts to create artificial life could have practical payoffs. Artificial intelligence may be considered ALife’s cousin in that researchers in both fields are enamored by a concept called open-ended evolution (演化). This is the capacity for a system to create essentially endless complexity, to be a sort of “novelty generator”. The only system known to exhibit this is Earth’s biosphere. If the field of ALife manages to reproduce life’s endless “creativity” in some virtual model, those same principles could give rise to truly inventive machines.
Compared with the developments of AI, advances in ALife are harder to recognize. One reason is that ALife is a field in which the central concept — life itself — is undefined. The lack of agreement among ALifers doesn’t help either. The result is a diverse line of projects that each advance along their unique paths. For better or worse, ALife mirrors the very subject it studies. Its muddled (混乱的) progression is a striking parallel (平行线) to the evolutionary struggles that have shaped Earth biosphere.
Undefined and uncontrolled, ALife drives its followers to repurpose old ideas and generated novelty. It may be, of course, that these characteristics aren’t in any way surprising or singular. They may apply universally to all acts of evolution. Ultimately ALife may be nothing special. But even this dismissal suggests something:perhaps, just like life itself throughout the universe, the rise of ALife will prove unavoidable.

The inability to engage with longer-term causes and consequences leads to some of the world’s most serious problems: climate change, biodiversity collapse, and more. (2022·北京·高考真题)“What would the world be if there were no hunger?” It’s a question that Professor Crystal would ask her students. They found it hard to answer, she wrote later, because imagining something that isn’t part of real life—and learning how to make it real—is a rare skill. It is taught to artists and engineers, but much less often to scientists. Crystal set out to change that, and helped to create a global movement. The result—an approach known as systems thinking—is now seen as essential in meeting global challenges.
Systems thinking is crucial to achieving targets such as zero hunger and better nutrition because it requires considering the way in which food is produced, processed, delivered and consumed, and looking at how those things intersect (交叉 ) with human health, the environment, economics and society. According to systems thinking, changing the food system—or any other network—requires three things to happen. First, researchers need to identify all the players in that system; second, they must work out how they relate to each other; and third, they need to understand and quantify the impact of those relationships on each other and on those outside the system.
Take nutrition. In the latest UN report on global food security, the number of undernourished (营养不良 )people in the world has been rising, despite great advances in nutrition science. Tracking of 150 biochemicals in food has been important in revealing the relationships between calories, sugar, fat and the occurrence of common diseases. But using machine learning and artificial intelligence, some scientists propose that human diets consist of at least 26,000 biochemicals—and that the vast majority are not known. This shows that we have some way to travel before achieving the first objective of systems thinking - which,in this example, is to identify more constituent parts of the nutrition system.
A systems approach to creating change is also built on the assumption that everyone in the system has equal power. But as some researchers find, the food system is not an equal one. A good way to redress (修正 ) such power imbalance is for more universities to do what Crystal did and teach students how to think using a systems approach.
More researchers, policymakers and representatives from the food industry must learn to look beyond their direct lines of responsibility and adopt a systems approach. Crystal knew that visions alone don’t produce results, but concluded that “we’ll never produce results that we can’t envision”.

The international scholars’ warning letter doesn't say exactly what collapse will look like or when it might happen. Collapseology, the study of collapse, is more concerned with identifying trends and with them the dangers of everyday civilization. Among the signatories(签署者) of the warning was Bob Johnson, the originator of the “ecological footprint” concept, which measures the total amount of environmental input needed to maintain a given lifestyle. With the current footprint of humanity, “it seems that global collapse is certain to happen in some form, possibly within a decade, certainly within this century,” Johnson said in an email.
“Only if we discuss the consequences of our biophysical limits,” the December warning letter says, “can we have the hope to reduce their speed, severity and harm”. And yet messengers of the coming disturbance are likely to be ignored. We all want to hope things will turn out fine. As a poet wrote,

(2026·北京顺义·二模)There’s a relatively new word doing the rounds in sustainability research: defossilization. Beyond expert circles, it isn’t necessarily obvious that eliminating fossil (化石) fuels does not mean phasing out carbon.
Defossilization means finding sustainable ways to make carbon-based chemicals. This carbon cannot come from the usual sources, such as coal, natural gas and oil. Alternative sources of carbon include the atmosphere and plants, as well as carbon in existing biological or industrial waste, such as used plastics or agricultural waste. In some cases, these chemicals will eventually return CO2 to the atmosphere through burning or biodegradation. In principle, this will occur as part of a circular process, rather than one that has added greenhouse gases.
The extraction (提取) of carbon from tough plant matter in crop waste is an alternative with potential that remains mostly unused. One major advantage is the fact that it can be produced without the use of extra land. But it is expensive to extract, and production timelines are long, both of which prevent its large-scale application.
Other potential sources of waste carbon include city and industrial waste, with used plastic among this. Current recycling methods break waste plastics into small pieces through melting, and then form small balls that can be used to make new products. For higher recycling rates to be achieved, chemical recycling methods will need to be further developed and scaled up.
CO2 captured from the air offers one of the largest potential channels for defossilization. The global chemicals industry could obtain one-third of its carbon needs from this source by 2050. Although the atmosphere holds nearly 900 billion tons of carbon (almost twice the amount in vegetation), estimates of CO₂’s future contribution vary widely. Some say CO2 will become the main material for chemicals, whereas others say its contribution will be insignificant.
To make useful carbon-based molecules (分子), CO2 must first be transformed into other molecules. This requires a considerable amount of renewable energy because CO₂ is highly stable. Capturing atmospheric CO2 is difficult and expensive, so some countries have not prioritized the technology—but this must change and needs a renewed focus on defossilization.

(2026·北京丰台·二模)Whales are some of the most highly intelligent species on Earth. Each species of whale has a distinct communication system that often varies within populations. Since humans have been researching and observing these forms of communication, a question has surfaced: Could humans one day engage in acoustic (声学的) interactions with whales? And what could these interactions reveal about non-human intelligence? Researchers from the University of California and the Alaska Whale Foundation have been exploring whale-to-human communication with humpback whales, and they’ve come up with some fascinating conclusions.
When scientists recorded a humpback whale contact call, known as a whup, and played it underwater around their research vessel, they were surprised when a whale named Twain became a more than willing participant in the call-and-response exchange. Scientists produced a single sound, or whup call, that Twain would then respond with her own whup call to them, a “conversation” described in their PeerJ paper.
“It might loosely translate to ‘hello’ or some sort of greeting call for when animals come together or just to signal that individuals are in a certain location,” says Dawson Hubbard, study author and animal behaviourist with Whale SETI. In this case, it was as if Twain was either saying “hello” to scientists or “I’m over here.” But in both instances, she was responding to and engaging with whale signals that humans produced.
Of course, whether whales want to communicate with humans varies by the temperament of the whale and by the situation. Just like some humans are more extroverted than others, this could also be true for whales, although this would need more research to understand. Twain circled around the scientists’ boat and was in proximity to its speakers. Permit limitations only allow for researchers to produce the sound for 20 minutes, but once they stopped, Twain continued to produce more signals before leaving. “What’s cool about Twain is that she could have left at any point, as it wasn’t a caged environment where she couldn’t leave, so she was choosing to be close to us,” says Hubbard.
Often, a willingness to communicate with humans would be food-mediated, but in this case, it wasn’t. There have also been other examples. Gray whales in the San Ignacio lagoon in Mexico, for example, are famously friendly. In fact, some gray whales regularly approach boats and allow visitors to have gentle contact with them.
According to the Oceanic Society, this behaviour isn’t shared amongst all gray whales, and in fact, this species of whale was almost hunted to extinction just a generation ago. But the behaviour may have been passed down through generations, and some gray whales in this population voluntarily approach humans. In the end, these and other encounters show that, in some cases, individual whales appear willing to engage with humans. And the more we learn about their mode of communication and what they are saying to us, the more we can learn about them.

Upon reflection, Scholl realized that there was a key difference between the two men’s messaging: the former used a junky built-in microphone on an old laptop, whereas the latter called in from a professional-grade home-recording studio. Scholl began to suspect that it was the sound quality, rather than the content of their arguments, that had swayed his judgment.
Ample research has shown that factors such as confident tones or accents influence how others perceive the speakers. In a hope to see whether this tendency would hold when the only difference was technological distortion, Scholl and his team created audio recordings in which a human voice read one of three scripts. Each script dealt with a different topic: the reader posed as a job applicant, a potential romantic partner or someone describing a car accident. Some recordings were clear; others were manipulated to sound tinny (尖细的) . “If you spend time on Zoom, you probably know tons of people who sound like this,” Scholl says. The researchers recruited 5,000 people online, each of whom listened to one script and then answered simple questions about their judgment of the speaker by rating on a continuous scale.
Across all three scripts, participants consistently rated the tinny voices as less hirable, credible and intelligent. The findings speak to the “deep power of perception,” Scholl says, and its ability to make us behave irrationally. “Everybody knows that this kind of auditory manipulation does not reflect on the person,” he says. “But our perception is operating, in some ways, autonomously from higher-level thought.”
Nadine Lavan, a psychologist at Queen Mary University of London, says the findings are somewhat expected. “But this doesn’t mean the results are not important,” she says. The study raises questions, she continues, about how much of an effect microphone quality may have in more complicated real-world settings. For example, abstract ratings of being hirable are informative, but real-life decisions include much more complex trading off of different factors.
Assuming the findings do hold in the real world, Scholl says the take-away lesson is clear: “You should really find out how you sound to other people online. And if you don’t sound good, take some remedial action,” he says.

When those soundwaves enter your ear, they make tiny membranes, bones, and hair cells inside vibrate, which triggers electrical signals that your brain interprets as sound.
But when that sound is extremely loud or frequent,it can actually harm the human body. “You can be exposed to so much sound that it destroys your hearing,” says Erica Walker, an epidemiologist at Brown University. As volume increases, the length of time during which you’re exposed to it should decrease.
It’s one thing to leave a concert with ringing ears or to be surprised by a sudden loud noise, but how does that actually affect your health? “When that stress response is stimulated, you start to breathe faster. Your heart rate starts to increase,” says Walker.
If this happens once or twice it might not be that big of a deal, but over time, constant stimulation of your body’s stress response, or long-term noise exposure, can make you more likely to develop serious health problems. According to one estimate, long-term noise exposure leads to 48,000 new cases of heart disease in Europe each year and affects the quantity and quality of sleep for 6.5million people. Noise can raise your blood pressure and heart rate even while you sleep.
But there can also be a psychological aspect, especially if people feel like they have no control over the noise they are exposed to. This can lead to mental health harms, such as increased anxiety and depression, says Walker.
When it comes to sleep, noises don’t have to be nearly as loud to cause problems. According to Jackson, sounds as low as 30 to 40dB can cause a person to toss and turn or wake up. However, sounds in this range are only associated with modest health effects. It’s really when you see night noises in the range of 40 to 55 dB or more that negative health effects are observed.
To keep noises from ruining your sleep studies suggest playing white noise through the night can help mask other sounds. Experts also suggest modifying your bedroom to safeguard against nighttime noise. “Add soft surfaces that help block or lessen noise, such as wall decorations, acoustic tiles, or a thicker bedroom door,” says Jackson.
However, the best way to fight back against noise pollution is to focus on the source. We need to think about how to change that going forward.

These two decisions feel completely different. One is a free decision that involves consideration based on your personal preferences, while the other is a forced decision that involves simply recognizing and picking the only available option. Neuroscientists have long assumed free decisions rely on different processes in the brain compared to forced decisions. But our latest research shows our brains actually make these decisions in surprisingly similar ways.
Decades of research have shown that, to make decisions, our brains gradually gather evidence for each option over time. By measuring electrical brain activity, researchers have identified a brain signal that reflects this accumulation of evidence during simple decisions. Like a loading bar building to 100%, the signal gradually rises to a particular level before a decision is made. Rather than climbing steadily towards one option, the signal fluctuates back and forth between the alternatives. This partly explains why we aren’t always consistent with our choices, even when our preferences are stable. This signal has been identified for forced decisions. But what about open-ended choices?
To answer this question, we recorded people’s brain activity while they chose between sets of coloured balloons. They viewed either two balloons of different colours to freely choose between, or a single balloon they were forced to pick. For both free and forced decisions, the brain activity unfolded in a strikingly similar way. The signal rose steadily to the same peak level before a choice was made, climbing faster for quick choices and slower for longer ones.
One might assume the brain forms free and forced decisions similarly, suggesting decision-making may be more automatic than it feels. This echoes Benjamin Libet’s experiments in the 1980s, which show brain activity begins ramping up before people are even consciously aware of their intention to act. But while the process may be automatic, what the brain is accumulating tells a different story. The evidence it weighs up is drawn entirely from who you are — your preferences, your goals, your experiences. Two people may go through the same neural process and land on the same choice, and yet arrive there for completely different reasons.
So rather than asking whether our choices are truly free, perhaps the better question is what it really means for a choice to be yours. Gruber’s team is working to develop a translation tool, which would transform sperm whale sounds into human words. One result of the research might be a world in which humans “undeniably understand” these creatures’ experience from their own perspectives, and this might breathe new life into whale conservation.
Consider, for instance, the problem of ocean noise pollution. Massive marine mammals such as sperm whales depend on highly-specialized echolocation systems to search for food and navigate the vast, lightless zones of the ocean and their highly-developed cerebral neural systems support near-constant communication with companions in their social groups. Thus, sound constitutes an irreplaceable and life-sustaining sensory core for them. Growing human noise — oil and gas exploration, construction, and most of all, ship engine noise — is a clear harm, disturbing the basic activities of sperm whale life.
While the evidence of harm is obvious, current laws are far from functional. Existing regulations (法规) provide a legal framework for preventing harm, but noise-related harm is mostly ignored. This is exactly where the breakthrough lies. What if whales were documented not only struggling to make themselves heard above the noise, but actually talking about it? So, as climate change and biodiversity loss threaten natural scents, many people may not even notice.
Whether or not we pay attention to the world’s “scentscape”, heat and pollution are causing it to shift. For many years, psychologists saw identity as a combination of someone’s values, beliefs, goals and social roles. Then, in the 1980s, Bob Johnson created the life story model of identity, in which he proposes that, as we go through life, these core features are built in with our memories to create a personal story through which we understand our lives.
Our life story is something that starts coming together in our teenage years, when we begin to organise our lives into chapters around key events or life changes, and begin to see ourselves as both the central character and, to a varying extent, the story’s author. People with more consistent stories tend to have a stronger sense of identity, and they feel their life has more meaning, direction and sense of purpose. He discovered that whether someone describes having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of a person’s mental health. Another key theme involves finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events. “People could talk about gaining knowledge or personal growth,” says Johnson. His research shows that this is often missing for people with mental health conditions. The good news is that there is evidence we can learn to change our own story.
Lisa Green, another researcher, sounds a few notes of caution (谨慎). Permit limitations only allow for researchers to produce the sound for 20 minutes, but once they stopped, Twain continued to produce more signals before leaving. “What’s cool about Twain is that she could have left at any point, as it wasn’t a caged environment where she couldn’t leave, so she was choosing to be close to us,” says Hubbard.
Often, a willingness to communicate with humans would be food-mediated, but in this case, it wasn’t. There have also been other examples. These two decisions feel completely different. One is a free decision that involves consideration based on your personal preferences, while the other is a forced decision that involves simply recognizing and picking the only available option. Neuroscientists have long assumed free decisions rely on different processes in the brain compared to forced decisions. But our latest research shows our brains actually make these decisions in surprisingly similar ways.
Decades of research have shown that, to make decisions, our brains gradually gather evidence for each option over time. By measuring electrical brain activity, researchers have identified a brain signal that reflects this accumulation of evidence during simple decisions. Like a loading bar building to 100%, the signal gradually rises to a particular level before a decision is made. Rather than climbing steadily towards one option, the signal fluctuates back and forth between the alternatives. This partly explains why we aren’t always consistent with our choices, even when our preferences are stable. This signal has been identified for forced decisions. But what about open-ended choices?
To answer this question, we recorded people’s brain activity while they chose between sets of coloured balloons. They viewed either two balloons of different colours to freely choose between, or a single balloon they were forced to pick. For both free and forced decisions, the brain activity unfolded in a strikingly similar way. The signal rose steadily to the same peak level before a choice was made, climbing faster for quick choices and slower for longer ones.
One might assume the brain forms free and forced decisions similarly, suggesting decision-making may be more automatic than it feels. This echoes Benjamin Libet’s experiments in the 1980s, which show brain activity begins ramping up before people are even consciously aware of their intention to act. But while the process may be automatic, what the brain is accumulating tells a different story. The evidence it weighs up is drawn entirely from who you are — your preferences, your goals, your experiences. Two people may go through the same neural process and land on the same choice, and yet arrive there for completely different reasons.
So rather than asking whether our choices are truly free, perhaps the better question is what it really means for a choice to be yours.
