An old farmer felt sad as he looked over his destroyed crops. A terrible storm swept (横扫) through the mountain the night before, and his once hopeful fields were now in a complete mess. His beans were all in the water. His neighbor, a kind young man named Thomas who lived near him, came to give a hand. “This is a disaster,” the farmer said. “My family has always been able to live on the harvests of the crops. I don’t know what to do now.”
Thomas thought for a minute. “I see this not as a disaster but as an opportunity (机会),” he said softly. The farmer looked at him in surprise. “How can this be an opportunity?” he asked. Thomas smiled. “Now you have an opportunity to try something new. You’ve always grown beans. Why not try planting different crops?” he said. The farmer thought about this. Thomas was right — he had become set in his ways. This disaster could push him to make his farm sustainable (可持续的) in new ways.
“You have given me hope again,” the farmer said. He clapped Thomas on the back. “Thank you for showing me the opportunity in this difficulty. My farm will be better for it.”
And so the farmer planted new crops and introduced more diversity (多样性) to his farm. Although the storm destroyed one harvest, it ended up saving more, for in every difficulty lies an opportunity, if we can see it.
29. Why did the farmer feel sad?
A. He had a fight with his neighbor Thomas. B. A terrible storm destroyed his crops.
C. His family refused to help him with the farm. D. He couldn’t find new crops to plant.

②A terrible storm destroyed the old farmer’s bean fields.
③The farmer understood difficulties could turn into opportunities.
④The old farmer felt sad and didn’t know what to do.
A. ②④①③ B. ②①④③ C. ④②①③ D. ④①②③

C. Opportunity in Difficulty D. A Kind Young Neighbour Thomas

Nature reserves provide the best home for wild animals with warm weather, water, plants and wetlands. Now, the AI system in reserves plays an important role in studying wildlife. Instead of using binoculars (望远镜), people can watch animals’ activities on big screens.
The AI system can be very helpful. First, it can recognize different animals by their tails, feet, or beaks and count their numbers. Second, it can record animals’ actions all day and night, which humans couldn’t do before. It also notices unusual behaviors. For example, if an animal moves strangely or lies still for too long, the system will warn researchers to help quickly. Besides, it keeps unauthorized (未经许可) people out of protected areas and teaches visitors about wildlife.
But there are still problems to be solved. For example, sometimes the AI system mixes up one animal with another. It might mistake plants for animals and provide wrong information for researchers. Also, because the system isn’t used everywhere in reserves, people still need to check some areas themselves. To improve the AI system, nature reserves are working with high-tech companies to make the system better and cover more areas.
Although the AI system isn’t perfect, it works faster and protects animals more effectively than old tools. Most importantly, it helps keep the natural ecosystem in balance.
37. What is the main use of the AI system in nature reserves?
A. To build warm homes for wild animals. B. To help study and protect wildlife.
C. To teach researchers how to use binoculars. D. To stop visitors from entering the reserves.
38. Which of the following is NOT an advantage (优点) of the AI system?
A. It can recognize animals by their body parts and count them.
B. It can record animals’ actions non-stop day and night.
C. It can always provide completely correct information for researchers.
D. It can warn researchers of animals’ unusual behaviors.
39. Which word is close to the underlined word “effectively”?
A. quickly B. successfully C. mainly D. loudly
40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The AI system has solved all the problems in nature reserves.
B. The AI system works more slowly than the old tools, like binoculars.
C. Nature reserves are working with high-tech companies to improve the AI system.
D. The AI system is used in every corner of the nature reserves now.

There might be a fire on the other side. Find another way out. Crawl (匍匐前进) on the floor if there is a lot of smoke. It is easier to breathe near the floor.
Get out and stay out. Never go back into a burning house. Go outside where it is safe and stay out once you are out. Don’t call 119 until you are safely outside. Always call 119 as soon as possible when you smell smoke or there is a fire.

Soon after, a beautiful woman named Lydia came to his home. They got married, and Lydia said she could make wonderful sails for him—but Chris must never watch her make them. Chris agreed, and Lydia’s sails made him rich quickly. As he got more money, he wanted to get more and became greedy. He made Lydia work harder and faster, even when she was tired.
One day, Chris forgot his promise (承诺) and opened Lydia’s weaving room door. He saw a crane weaving its feathers into a sail!
