Carnival: One Day in Rio
Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the highlights. He did not let me down.
Well, the carnival is most definitely all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its roots in Africa. Lots of Africans were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being colonized, so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals. It’s the kind of music that you can’t help dancing to, and I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging almost involuntarily.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade, the icon of Brazilian culture, inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship title, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come. So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the Sambadrome. We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.
24.What was the main cause for the author’s tension in the beginning?
A.The doubts about the visit. B.The nervousness over the crowd.
C.The inability to find a local guide. D.The anxiety about visiting a new country.
25.What can we learn about samba from this passage?
A.Samba has its roots in America.
B.Samba is not the taste of the writer.
C.Samba has a long and mixed culture.
D.Samba music is usually slow and soft.
26.The author didn’t regret missing the parade because ________.
A.she met some amazing local people
B.she didn’t have the tickets for the parade
C.she celebrated the festival in a local way
D.she enjoyed the carnival by making her own parties
27.According to the passage, which of the following words can best describe Ronnie?
A.Modest and determined. B.Humorous and ambitious.
C.Creative and sympathetic D.Reliable and considerate.

Thousands of years ago, New Year’s Eve fell on October 31, and in some European countries, like Ireland, it was a special day for the sun god. To celebrate the coming of a new year and to scare ghosts away, people would get together and wear scary costumes (装束).
Most Europeans followed this old tradition even after they became Christians in 312 AD.As Christian practices became more and more important in most European cultures, Europeans began to see the importance in holding a special day for saints (圣人). Saints are Christians who have died but are still given special respect. Each saint is given a special day, so that Christians can celebrate the saint’s life every year.
In 609 AD, the number of saints had grown too large for each of them to have a special day on the calendar, so the church set a day, May 13, to celebrate every saint's life. It was called “All Saints’ Day”. In 835 AD, this day was moved to November 1. Later, October 31 was named “Halloween” in Ireland. This word means “the evening before the day for all saints”. It was about this time that people began going to church on both Halloween and All Saints' Day.
Today, most people don’t know much about All Saints’ Day or the history of Halloween. However, the old tradition of dressing up in scary costumes has been kept to this very day, which makes Halloween a fun evening for children.
28.New Year's Eve used to be celebrated on _____.
A.October 31 B.December 25 C.May 13 D.November 1
29.How did All Saints’ Day first begin?

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms?
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.” This is a way of saying “Keep off the grass” Or “people mountain, people sea”, which means “very crowded”.
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish, if all you know is “good good study, day day up”, you will be considered “out man”.
Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as “smilence”, a combination by the English word smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs, products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors. Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years. “I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners, it’s actually quite charming to see them. I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture.”
However, Chinglish will probably become a “cultural relic” in the near future. Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. “It is very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries,” a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it’s Chinese’s turn.
31.Which one of the following can be called Chinglish according to the examples?
A.English words which get new Chinese meanings.
B.The Chinese words which are difficult to translate.
C.The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.
D.The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.
32.What does “smilence” most probably mean?
A.Laughing at somebody.
B.Knowing little about speech.
C.Smiling without being noticed.
D.Saying nothing but to smile.
33.What is Swire’s attitude to Chinglish?
A.It helps him to learn Chinese well.
B.It seems part of Chinese culture.
C.It can show the humour of Chinese.
D.It will attract more foreign tourists.
34.Why is Chinglish likely to become a “cultural relic” in Beijing?
A.Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.
B.Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C.Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
D.Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.

Chinese birthday celebrations form a meaningful tradition that honors life’s journey. Deeply influenced by Confucian respect for elders and Taoist harmony with nature, these customs go beyond simply marking time. 35 They represent wishes for good fortune, prosperity, and the continuation of life.
36 It determines traditional birthday dates and is built into the Chinese way of counting age. Unlike the Western age system, Chinese way of counting age typically considers a person a year old at birth and gains another year with each Lunar New Year, reflecting the cultural emphasis on natural cycles.
The most symbolic customs include eating “longevity noodles” representing a long life, and sharing red eggs symbolizing happiness and new life. While tradition remains necessary, there is also room for new elements. Modern celebrations often include cakes, yet they are often decorated with peaches — a traditional symbol of a very long life. 37
Significant milestones receive special attention. 38 The first birthday features the Zhuazhou custom, in which a child selects objects believed to predict their future. The 12th birthday marks the end of childhood, and today, the 18th birthday is the popular time to celebrate becoming an adult. Later milestone birthdays include 30, 40, and 50. The 60th birthday, which completes a full zodiac cycle, is celebrated with a large family celebration. Birthdays at 70 and beyond honor longevity.
39 Women traditionally do not celebrate their 30th, 33rd, and 66th birthdays. Men might avoid celebrating their 40th birthday and instead remain 39 for another year.
Through these meaningful customs, Chinese birthday culture beautifully connects celebration with a deep respect for life’s journey.
A.Certain birthdays are considered unlucky.
B.Respect for others is a key part of Chinese culture.
C.Rather, they serve as meaningful cultural expressions.
D.Central to these celebrations is the Chinese lunar calendar.
E.A baby’s first month is marked with the “red egg” ceremony.

G.The emphasis on harmony can be seen in many aspects of family life.

A.Many saints in Europe, wanted such a holiday.
B.Christian rules required this kind of celebration.
C.There were too many saints to celebrate one by one.
D.Children didn't have any kind of holiday for themselves.
30.The word “Halloween” refers to _____.
A.the scary costumes people wear on All Saints’ Day
B.the evening before the day for all saints
C.a tradition in European countries
D.a special day for the sun god
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B

29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In 609 AD, the number of saints had grown too large for each of them to have a special day on the calendar, so the church set a day, May 13, to celebrate every saint's life. It was called “All Saints’ Day”. ”(公元609年,由于圣徒的数量太多,他们无法每个人在日历上都有一个特别的日子,所以教堂定了一天,5月13日,来庆祝每个圣徒的生命。它被称为“万圣节”。)可知,C选项“有太多的圣徒,没法一个接一个地庆祝。”是All Saints’ Day开始的原因。故选C项。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In 835 AD, this day was moved to November 1. Later, October 31 was named “Halloween” in Ireland. This word means “the evening before the day for all saints”.”(公元835年,这一天被改到了11月1日。后来,10月31日在爱尔兰被命名为“万圣节”。这个词的意思是“所有圣徒的前夜”。)可知,“万圣节”意为“所有圣徒的前夜”。故选B项。

【答案】31.C 32.D 33.B 34.A
【导语】本文为一篇说明文。如今,世界英语不单单受美式英语和英式英语的影响,英语词汇和汉语语法的结合还导致了越来越多的“中式英语”的出现。
【详解】31.推理判断题。根据第四段“Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as “smilence”, a combination by the English word smile and silence.(现在,更多的中式英语词汇被创造出来,例如,一个汉语成语被翻译成“smilence”,由英语单词微笑和沉默组合而成。)”可知,文中举的中式英语的例子都是把英语词汇按照汉语语法表达出来,与C选项描述相符。故选C项。
32.词句猜测题。根据第四段smilence一词后的内容“a combination by the English word smile and silence(是由英语单词“微笑”和“沉默”结合而成的)”可知,smilence是把“微笑”和“沉默”结合,即表示“笑而不语”。故选D项。
33.推理判断题。根据第五段中Swire说话的内容“I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture. (我认为如果中国的英语翻译都很完美,那么中国文化就会丢失一些东西)”可知,他认为中式英语是中国文化的一部分。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. “It is very ridiculous to sec Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries,” a Beijinger said.(北京已经制定了一项全面计划,在五年内提高外语服务和纠正中式英语。一个北京人说道:“在一些景点看到中式英语的标语是很可笑的。并且它们也是中国人与其他外国人交流的障碍。”)”可推知,所以所谓的中式英语会成为文化遗迹就是指,在政府的政策下会逐渐消除中式英语,尤其是那些标语。故选A项。
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
F.This mix of old and new reflects the living nature of the tradition.
G.The emphasis on harmony can be seen in many aspects of family life.

A.The doubts about the visit. B.The nervousness over the crowd.
