In a world filled with constant noise, the concept of silence holds remarkable benefits for both our mental and physical well-being.
Silence can have a calming effect on our minds. The absence of noise gives the brain more time to process information and therefore provides much-needed mental clearness. Reduced background noise can enhance focus and deepen our connection to our emotions and thoughts according to Psych Central article The hidden benefits of silence. There have been a variety of studies proving that silence can reduce stress levels. Silence achieves this by lowering cortisol (皮质醇) and adrenaline (肾上腺素), which encourages mindfulness, promotes self-awareness, and allows the brain to “reset” and gives a peaceful break from busy lives.
Physically, silence also plays a positive role. A 2013 study found that silence can increase the number of cells in the hippocampus (海马体) of the brain. Researchers studied mice and found that just two hours of silence a day contributed to cell development. Another study into the effects of music and silence conducted by the National Institutes of Health, which interspersed different musical styles with a period of two-minute silence, discovered that when this silence was introduced, the participants’ breathing frequency, heart rate, and blood pressure all decreased to below initial levels.

Silence in conversation enables us to listen more attentively, giving others the opportunity to share what they need to. Now it’s the perfect time to teach kids about growing things. Try one or more of these plant experiments for fun and learning.
Color carnations(康乃馨).
Fill a glass with water and color the water. Add a white carnation stalk(茎) and watch the plant become colorful as it “drinks” the colored water. This is a great, short experiment to show how plants absorb water.
Plant root vegetables.
Find out how root vegetables form underground by planting root vegetables in a clear container. First, fill the bottom of the container with small stones. Next, add potting soil and plant root vegetable seeds, trying carrots or onions, evenly. Keep the soil wet and enjoy watching the root form. Best of all, when the vegetable is done growing, you can eat it!
Study speedy sunflowers.
Sunflower seeds sprout(发芽) and grow quickly, making this the perfect flower for impatient children. These seeds can be started just about anywhere, even in a paper coffee cup or yogurt container. Kids love seeing the plant push its way out of the soil, wearing the seed’s outer part like a hat! Move your plant to a flower pot after it sprouts to observe the flower as it forms.
Make a grass basket.
Grass is another seed that grows quickly, Make a living basket by lining a basket with plastic and filling it with potting soil, Put grass seeds on top and water them lightly every day.
Growing plants is a great way to bring some learning — and a little sunshine — to your daily life. Try any of these inexpensive garden experiments for a fun project this spring.

My mother always told me, “You should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.” However, it seems like a tough mission to travel all across its expansive surfaces. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain $150. My best friends Trevor, Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad.
For a group of 20-year-olds, this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning, our 22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin. Eyes baggy from lack of sleep, we jumped on board as if it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to 3, 000 kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise.
The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night, we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it, the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise, a sea of golden grain fields dominated the landscape we were in the Canadian Prairies.
Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome (圆顶状物). And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm. Lightning was striking at an incredible rate. The spectacular and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.
Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Before the train adventure, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. That is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.
8. What has made the author’s train adventure across Canada a reality?
A. The encouragement given by his mother.
B. The discount ticket offered by Via Rail Canada.
C. The appeal of the scenic views in the country.
D. His great courage to challenge a tough mission.
9. What can we infer about the young people from Paragraph 2?
A. They left their parents for the first time in their life.
B. They never thought of having a train adventure.
C. They were hooked by the magic story of Harry Potter.
D. They were excited about the coming train journey.
10. What does “the glass bubble” in the fourth paragraph refer to?
A. The glass-domed train car. B. The sightseeing tour.
C. A state of excitement. D. A summer camp on the train.
11. What did the author learn from the train adventure across Canada?
A. The destination is what matters.
B. Adventurous journey attracts young people.
C. Enjoying a journey counts a lot.
D. The traveling experience is not real to him.

Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper — a little bird called a honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.
12. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees’ nest?
A. It’s small in size. B. It’s hidden in trees.
C. It’s covered with wax. D. It’s hard to recognize.
13. What do the words “the follower” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A bee. B. A bird.
C. Animals or people looking for honey. D. A beekeeper.
14. The honey guide is special in the way ______.
A. it gets its food B. it goes to church
C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees’ nests
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Wild Bees B. Wax and Honey
C. Beekeeping in Africa D. Honey-Lover’s Helper

Dave was in his car driving home. Work had been longer today than most days. His wife was expecting him home soon for dinner but he knew he would be late. Up ahead on the road there was a car that was pulled off to the side of the road. A gentleman in decent office clothing was standing at the tire (轮胎), looking quite confused.
“I should stop and help,” Dave thought. “But I’m already late... Maybe he can just call the policemen or a friend to come to get him.”
It was late November and in the mountains of Virginia it-was dark and cold. Dave already felt the guilt (内疚) of not stopping to help. “It’s cold... cell phone service is weak in these areas... what if he decided to walk... he can’t defend himself if an animal comes out of the woods.”
Led by guilt, Dave pulled in front of the broken down car and shut off his engine. “Need some help?” Dave yelled out. Now walking past the headlights he found a medium height older man, somewhere in his 60’s. “I have a flat tire. I’m a little ashamed to say I don’t know how to put on my spare tire.” Dave nodded. He put his hands in his jacket. “No worries. I’ll have you fixed up in no time. I own the car repair shop in town.”
Dave walked to the trunk of the car and took out the spare tire and tools. He took off the flat tire and placed the new one on quickly. “Could I give you some cash?” asked the old man. “No, I can’t take any cash. It was my pleasure to help. Now just promise me you will go straight home.” The old man laughed, “okay, fair deal. I promise, I’ll go straight home.” They shook hands and Dave turned around and started walking back towards his truck.
“This cold air...” he thought to himself, finding himself unwell. Dave felt his chest (胸部) tightening. He felt short of breath. He needed to sit down. He put his hand on his chest. He had to stop. The pain coming from his chest was so sharp. He felt breathless. Then his mind went blank.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段内容“The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房)…and this is when the honey guide takes its share.(蜂蜜向导其实并不喜欢蜂蜜,但它确实喜欢蜂巢里的蜂蜡。
根据全文内容,结合第一段中“In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper — a little bird called a honey guide.(然而,在非洲的部分地区,寻找蜂蜜的人和动物有一种奇怪而意想不到的帮手——一种被称为‘蜂蜜向导’的小鸟)”可知,本文主要介绍了一种帮助人们寻找到蜂蜜的鸟儿,D项“蜂蜜爱好者的帮手”为最佳标题。故选D。

【答案】
A few hours later, Dave came to himself, quickly realizing he was in the hospital. The white walls and the smell of medicine surrounded him, and a nurse explained that he had been brought in by an old man. Just then, the old man walked into the room, with his face showing relief. Dave remembered helping him with a flat tire on the road, but now felt confused about how he ended up here. The old man explained that after Dave left, he saw him collapse by his truck and immediately called for an ambulance.
“You had a heart attack,” said the old man, “and I actually am a heart doctor.” Dave was shocked to hear this. The old man continued that when he found Dave unconscious, his medical training kicked in. He performed first aid and kept Dave stable until the ambulance arrived. “Your kindness in stopping to help me might have saved your own life,” the old man said. Dave felt a rush of gratitude. It was then that he realized that small acts of help can create unexpected connections and make a big difference in others’ lives.
