My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl’s writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda’s battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they’re also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters—Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse “night people” who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Fynn
There was a bit of me that didn’t want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There’s tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It’s a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what’s going on is horribly enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world’s population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.
1. Who does “I” refer to in the text?
A. Stephen King. B. Gillian Flynn.
C. Jo Usmar. D. Roald Dahl.
2. Which of the following tells about Mari and Eri?
A. Cosmopolitan. B. Matilda.
C. After Dark. D. The Stand.
3. What kind of book is Gone Girl?
A. A folk tale. B. A biography.
C. A love story. D. A horror story.

Anyone who has used AI programs like ChatGPT knows they are great at summarizing textbooks and writing standard cover letters, but can they also produce the kind of writing that moves us and speaks to our souls?
Journalist Vauhini Vara thinks the answer is yes. Defining creative writing mainly as “waiting for the right word,” she suspected that generative AI, with its instant access to every noun and adjective in the English dictionary, could be a helpful tool.
Although ChatGPT has been programmed to write in a plain, explanatory way, it can learn to mimic (模仿) other voices provided it has enough training data. “I think there is a misconception that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing in a poetic, literary style,” author Sean Michaels says. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well.”
For his novel Do You Remember Being Born?, in which a poet is approached by a tech company to co-author a collection of poems with their AI, Michaels created a custom version of ChatGPT he called “Moorerebot,” which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore, further lessening the distinction between human and machine.
However, the Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has been outspoken about his distaste for machine learning. Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional or profound, Kaufman would refuse to recognize this as art because it cannot establish a link between the reader and the author. “If I read a poem,” he said, “and that poem moves me, I am in love with the person who wrote it. I can’t be in love with a computer program.”
Since programs like ChatGPT allow anyone to produce competent prose (散文), the novels of tomorrow may be intentionally less polished, filled with grammatical errors and language styles that point to the limits of the human brain and the uniqueness of individuals. Far from a threat to the survival of creative writing or human creativity in general, AI, like the innovative technologies that came before it, may become a force of change and a source of inspiration.
4. What is Vara’s attitude towards using AI in creative writing?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Tolerant. D. Uncaring.
5. What idea does “Moorerebot” challenge?
A. AI is bad at writing poetically. B. AI harms critical thinking.
C. AI needs a large data set. D. AI will replace human poets.
6. Why does Kaufman dislike AI writing?
A. It lacks literary imagination.
B. It mimics other famous writers.
C. It fails to build interpersonal ties.
D. It produces unemotional content.
7. What change may we see in AI-inspired writing?
A. More individualized roughness. B. More creative literary forms.
C. More complicated story lines. D. More well-edited language styles.
B 5. A 6. C 7. A

根据原文第二段“Journalist Vauhini Vara thinks the answer is yes. Defining creative writing mainly as “waiting for the right word,” she suspected that generative AI, with its instant access to every noun and adjective in the English dictionary, could be a helpful tool.(记者Vauhini Vara认为答案是肯定的。她将创意写作主要定义为“寻觅恰当的词汇”,她认为生成式人工智能能够即时调取英语词典中的所有名词和形容词,会成为一个有用的工具。)”可知,Vara对人工智能应用于创意写作持积极支持的态度。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第三段““I think there is a misconception that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing in a poetic, literary style,” author Sean Michaels says. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well.”(作家Sean Michaels表示:“人们存在一个误区,认为ChatGPT这类大语言模型不擅长创作富有诗意的文学作品。事实上,它们可以轻松且出色地完成这类创作。”)”以及第四段“Michaels created a custom version of ChatGPT he called “Moorerebot,” which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore, further lessening the distinction between human and machine.(Michaels打造了一款名为“穆尔机器人”的定制版ChatGPT,该模型经过训练,能够模仿现实诗人玛丽安·穆尔的风格进行创作,进一步缩小了人机写作的差距。)”
根据原文第五段“Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional or profound, Kaufman would refuse to recognize this as art because it cannot establish a link between the reader and the author.(即便人工智能能够写出富有情感、意蕴深刻的内容,Kaufman也不会将其认定为艺术,因为它无法在读者和作者之间建立情感联结。)”
根据原文第六段“Since programs like ChatGPT allow anyone to produce competent prose, the novels of tomorrow may be intentionally less polished, filled with grammatical errors and language styles that point to the limits of the human brain and the uniqueness of individuals.(由于ChatGPT这类程序让所有人都能写出流畅通顺的散文,未来的小说或许会刻意弱化文字的精致度,保留语法瑕疵与独特的语言风格,以此体现人类思维的局限性与个体的独特性。)”

Researchers from the University of Florida studied what may cause people to choose unknown options over known ones, and they found that where the information comes from is important: when what you know comes from other people’s experiences, you’re more likely to explore new options.
They conducted a series of experiments. In one experiment, participants were asked to choose one of four squares on a computer screen. Each square, or button, hid an amount of money from 1 cent to 40 cents, and participants were told how much money was behind one of the squares in order to help them determine whether to explore and try another square in hopes of turning up more. Some participants were told the information came from another person taking part in the experiment; others were told it came from the computer.
Participants were almost twice as likely to explore an unknown button when the information about the known amount appeared to come from a player rather than the computer. As social beings, we consider other people’s experiences as part of our own, so we’re less likely to want to repeat them, even if the experiences are positive, the researchers find. It doesn’t seem to work the same way with computers.
Not surprisingly, the amount revealed also had an effect: participants were more willing to choose a different square — to explore, so to speak — when the known amount was low and less willing when it was high, no matter the source of the information. But when the revealed amount was in the middle, the human versus (与……相对) computer effect became particularly evident.
The idea that the individual decision about whether to venture out has a social component could have practical implications, the researchers write. “For those seeking to encourage exploration in others, our findings offer a simple intervention: highlight the fact that existing information is available because of previous explorers.”
8. What mainly influenced the participants’ decisions in the experiment?
A. The source of the information.
B. The time reserved for each task.
C. The number of options provided.
D. The reward for the correct choice.
9. At which known amount might the participants hesitate most?
A. 5 cents. B. 10 cents. C. 20 cents. D. 35 cents.
10. Why do the researchers write the words in the last paragraph?
A. To doubt social influence.
B. To show past explorers’ successes.
C. To demonstrate why people take risks.
D. To suggest how to drive experimentation.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why We Prefer Familiar Over Foreign
B. How Rewards Make Us Avoid Unknowns
C. Why We Go Where No One’s Gone Before
D. How Others Help Us Make Better Choices
A 9. C 10. D 11. C

根据第一段“Researchers from the University of Florida studied what may cause people to choose unknown options over known ones, and they found that where the information comes from is important: when what you know comes from other people’s experiences, you’re more likely to explore new options.(来自佛罗里达大学的研究者研究了什么可能致使人们选未知选项而非已知选项,且他们发现信息来自何处很关键:当你所知内容源自他人经历时,你更有可能去探寻新选项。)”以及第三段“Participants were almost twice as likely to explore an unknown button when the information about the known amount appeared to come from a player rather than the computer.(当已知金额的信息来自实验参与者而非电脑时,参与者探索未知按钮的可能性几乎翻倍)”可知,实验中信息来源是影响参与者决定的主要因素。
根据第四段“Not surprisingly, the amount revealed also had an effect: participants were more willing to choose a different square — to explore, so to speak — when the known amount was low and less willing when it was high, no matter the source of the information. But when the revealed amount was in the middle, the human versus (与……相对) computer effect became particularly evident.(毫不意外,披露的数额同样会产生影响:当已知数额较低时,受试者更愿意选择另一方格——可以说就是去探索未知;数额高时则意愿更低,无论信息来源于何处。但当披露数额处于中等水平时,人为信息与电脑信息带来的差异效应会格外明显。)”可知,中等数额报酬时,人们受信息来源干扰最大、决策最犹豫。结合1至40美分的区间,20美分为中间数值。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“For those seeking to encourage exploration in others, our findings offer a simple intervention: highlight the fact that existing information is available because of previous explorers.(对于那些想要鼓励他人进行探索的人来说,我们的研究结果提供了一个简单的干预方法:强调现有信息得益于前人的探索)”可知,研究者旨在给出方法,指导人们如何推动、激发他人的探索行为。
D
What we call “numerical competence” is important in life, including in the animal kingdom. Animals benefit from numerical competence in many aspects of their lives.
Honeybees count landmarks to estimate travel distances. You can train them using a feeder with sugar water. On the way to the feeder, you present a certain number of landmarks. For example, the feeder is located at one of five yellow lines on the wall of a flying path. The distance to the food reward varies, but the number of landmarks remains constant. In later trials of new paths, the bees search the area around the landmark they learned, even when the spatial layout or type of landmarks changes. Researchers have found that bees can count up to four objects.
Numbers are also important for hunting. When animals hunt together, the number of hunters is crucial, especially when the prey (猎物) is large, defensive, and capable of kicking hunters to death. This was investigated in wolves that hunt deer and bison (野牛). The probability of catching deer or bison depends on the size of the hunting party. In this case more is not necessarily better, probably because sometimes the wolves get in each other’s way. It seems that wolves know this: If their hunting party is small, they will go for a deer. If their hunting party is larger, they will try to catch a bison.
However, my favorite study about counting animals comes from another pack-living animal: the lion. In a study conducted in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, female lions were exposed to recordings of unknown female lions roaring (吼叫). The roars could be from one or three unknown female lions. The researchers then observed how the lionesses responded. The lionesses approached the loudspeaker with unknown female lions more often when they heard the roar of one lioness than when they heard the roar of three lionesses. This is not too surprising. However, there was more to it than that. The lionesses also took into account how many members of the pack were present. When they heard three strangers, they called for absent members of their own group.
12. What can be inferred about how the honeybees locate food?
A. They get confused by new signs.
B. They fly the same route each time.
C. They stop using signs after training.
D. They depend a lot on number counting.
13. Which describes the wolves’ hunting style?
A. Big team, big prey. B. Small pack, risky attack.
C. More wolves, more prey. D. Larger group, less success.
14. On which basis do the lionesses adjust their behavior?
A. The body shape of the strangers.
B. The loudness of the strangers’ roars.
C. The distance to their team members.
D. The composition of their own group.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Animals’ reactions to danger.
B. Animals’ adaptive math ability.
C. Animals’ partnership in the wild.
D. Animals’ learning competence.

根据文章第二段中的“In later trials of new paths, the bees search the area around the landmark they learned, even when the spatial layout or type of landmarks changes. (在后来对新路径的试验中,即使空间布局或地标类型发生变化,蜜蜂也会在他们学到的地标周围搜索)”以及“Researchers have found that bees can count up to four objects. (研究人员发现,蜜蜂最多可以数到四个物体)”可知,蜜蜂在新路径的试验中,能最多搜索到四个物体,可推理出蜜蜂在寻找食物时高度依赖对地标数量的计算。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中的“If their hunting party is small, they will go for a deer. If their hunting party is larger, they will try to catch a bison. (如果它们的狩猎队伍很小,它们就会去捕猎鹿。如果它们的狩猎队伍更大,它们就会尝试捕捉野牛)”可知,狼的狩猎风格是队伍越大,捕猎的猎物就越大。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中的“The lionesses also took into account how many members of the pack were present. When they heard three strangers, they called for absent members of their own group. (母狮们还会考虑自己群体中有多少成员在场。当它们听到三个陌生者的吼叫时,它们会呼唤自己群体中不在场的成员)”可知,母狮们会根据自己群体的成员构成来调整它们的行为。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段中的“What we call “numerical competence” is important in life, including in the animal kingdom. Animals benefit from numerical competence in many aspects of their lives. (我们所说的“数字能力”在生活中很重要,在动物界也是如此。动物在生活的许多方面都受益于数字能力)”、第三段中的“If their hunting party is small, they will go for a deer. If their hunting party is larger, they will try to catch a bison. (如果它们的狩猎队伍很小,它们就会去捕猎鹿。如果它们的狩猎队伍更大,它们就会尝试捕捉野牛)”以及最后一段中的“The lionesses also took into account how many members of the pack were present. When they heard three strangers, they called for absent members of their own group. (母狮们还会考虑自己群体中有多少成员在场。当它们听到三个陌生的吼叫时,它们会呼唤自己群体中不在场的成员)”可知,本文说的是“数字能力”在动物界很重要,狼会根据狩猎队伍的大小调整猎物的大小,母狮在听到三个陌生者的吼叫时,它们会呼唤自己群体中不在场的成员,可推理出本文主要讲述的是动物在野外生存中展现出的适应性的数学能力。

【16题详解】
根据上文“Do you find yourself making the same mistakes in your writing over and over again?(你是否发现自己在写作中总是重复犯同样的错误呢?)”以及后文“An error log is a personalized document that lists your mistakes and how to correct them. When you receive feedback about a mistake in your writing, you create an entry in your error log that includes the error and how to correct it. By using an error log, you can develop a plan to catch and correct errors before submitting your assignment.(错误日志是一种个性化的文档,其中列出了你的错误以及如何纠正这些错误。当你收到关于自己写作中错误的反馈时,你可以在错误日志中添加一条记录,其中包括错误内容以及如何纠正的方法。通过使用错误日志,你可以制定一个计划,在提交作业之前发现并纠正错误)”可知,第一段提出问题:你是否发现自己在写作中反复犯同样的错误?紧接着空后解释了什么是“错误日志”。选项A“错误日志对此很有用”起到了承上启下的作用,指出错误日志正是解决这个问题的有用工具。故选A。
根据后文“Most people tend to repeat the same errors. As you add entries to your log, you will likely see a pattern emerge.(大多数人往往会重复同样的错误。当你在日志中添加记录时,很可能会发现其中存在某种规律)”以及“Then, as you edit your work, you can focus especially on checking and correcting these errors. By concentrating on a smaller number of repeated errors, you will reduce the overall number of mistakes in your writing as you master the areas that are most challenging to you.(然后,在编辑作品的过程中,你可以特别专注于检查和纠正这些错误。通过集中精力处理那些重复出现的错误,你就能在掌握对你来说最具挑战性的部分时,减少整体的错误数量)”可知,第二段主要阐述了错误日志的具体好处(发现模式、集中精力纠正)。选项B“以下是错误日志如何发挥作用的示例”作为本段的主题句,引出下文关于错误日志如何发挥作用的具体说明。故选B。
【18题详解】
根据上文“Most people tend to repeat the same errors. As you add entries to your log, you will likely see a pattern emerge.(大多数人往往会重复同样的错误。当你在日志中添加记录时,很可能会发现其中存在某种规律)”以及后文“Then, as you edit your work, you can focus especially on checking and correcting these errors. By concentrating on a smaller number of repeated errors, you will reduce the overall number of mistakes in your writing as you master the areas that are most challenging to you.(然后,在编辑作品的过程中,你可以特别专注于检查和纠正这些错误。通过集中精力处理那些重复出现的错误,你就能在掌握对你来说最具挑战性的部分时,减少整体的错误数量)”可知,空前说你会看到一种模式(pattern)出现,空后说然后你可以在编辑时特别关注并纠正这些错误。选项G“你可以找出自己最常犯的2到3个错误”具体说明了这种模式是什么,即识别出你最常犯的两三个错误,与上下文衔接紧密。故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Now, let’s see how to start your own error log.(现在,让我们来看看如何开启自己的错误日志吧)”以及后文“When you discover you have made an error, add it to your chart, along with the correct way to write the sentence. When your error log has several entries, look for patterns. Choose 2 — 3 errors that you make most frequently. These will become your focus areas.(当你发现自己犯了错误时,将其记录在你的图表中,同时也要注明正确的写法。

I had stopped at the Swindon services (服务区) while on my way back to London. As I drove up the slip road, I spotted a man with a backpack and his thumb (拇指) out. I pulled over and lowered the window.
“Which way are you heading?” I asked. “I’m going back to London.”
“Ah, that would be grand,” came his immediate reply. He opened the door and lifted his backpack on to the back seat. “I’m Brendan,” he said with an easy smile and a rich Irish tongue. “I was getting a bit desperate. I've had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”
“I haven’t eaten in days,” said Brendan. “I’m trying to get home.”
I’ve always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers I used to be a motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars. Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all the miles I was doing.
As we headed cast along the motorway, Brendan told me how he came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also about the two recent family tragedies that had ruined him and pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.
Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (不入网的) lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he’d been mugged (抢劫).
“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had all my money in it. I’ve been sleeping out since then. I haven’t eaten in days. I’m hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can then get myself home to Ireland.”
It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping a man who'd clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do.
Para.1:
As we were approaching the Heathrow turn-off (希思罗机场岔道), I had an idea.

Para.2:
Before he left to buy his air ticket, he gave me a huge hug.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As we were approaching the Heathrow turn-off (希思罗机场岔道), I had an idea. “Why don’t I just drop you at the airport now?” I said. “I’ll buy you a ticket and you can fly home.” “That’s so kind of you,” he replied. Then, after a pause, “and please don’t worry. I’ll definitely wire you the money when I get home.” I pulled onto the airport avenue and soon dropped him off outside the terminal building. I went to a cash point, got out 10 shiny new 20 notes and handed them over. He took the money and thanked me again and again.
Before he left to buy his air ticket, he gave me a huge hug. He took my phone number and said he’d call as soon as he could to arrange the transfer. I bid farewell to him without any real idea whether I’d ever see the man or the money again. As I drove the final miles to my own house in London, I felt happier thinking about Brendan. He asked for help, for a lift to get home, and in good faith I gave them to him. Nothing is better than helping others. Giving is receiving.

C
