Read about other people’s exciting travels around the world with these three books. Is That Bike Diesel, Mate?: One man, one bike and the first Lap Around Australia on Used Cooking Oil by Paul Carter There are lots of ways to travel around Australia. You could do it by plane, train or car. But author Paul Carter decided to tour the country on a homemade motorcycle that runs on cooking oil. Why? the author worked in the oil industry for many years, and was keen to explore alternative fuels. So, he bought the unusual bike from a group of Australian university students (who had built it themselves)and set off. On route, he has lots of amusing experiences. He almost dies in a crash and he even attempts to break the land speed record for a motorbike running . You Are Awful (But I Like You) Travels Through Unloved Britain by Tim Moore Travel writers usually go to the best destinations. But not Tim Moore. In the book, Tim travels to the worst places in the UK. Follow him as he heads to “the bleakest towns, the worst hotels and the scariest pubs”. And to make matters worse, he does it in the middle of winter. “My primary challenge was to have a good time in places that everyone had said I wouldn’t,” said the author. And he does meet lots of quirky characters and discovers that even Britain’s ugliest parts have an inner beauty. Coasting: A Private Voyage by Jonathan Raban In 1982, author Jonathan Raban bought a boat and navigated Britain. And this is the book about his adventure. Along the way he gets caught in a few storms, explores seaside towns and even takes his aging parents along for part of the journey. Raban also uses his time at sea to think about how 1980s Britain is changing under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. 1. What is special of Paul Carter’s travel? A. He breaks the land speed record. B. He uses an unconventional fuel. C. His aging parents accompanies him. D. His motorcycle almost dies in a crash. 2. What challenge does TimMoore face while traveling in the UK? A. Searching for alternative fuels. B. Surviving heavy storms at sea. C. Enduring the freezing cold in winter. D. Enjoying himself in unattractive places. 3. What do the three books have in common? A. They share practical travel advice for tourists. B. They compare different modes of transportation. C. They explore unique and challenging travel experiences. D. They offer alternative fuel sources and their applications. B Soon after Mr. & Mrs. Bacchus started farming their little patch of land, they faced a major problem — a plague of birds fed on their precious crops. Then, a man stopped on the road outside their house, and asked the couple if he could take photographs of the birds on the property. Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born. Today, the couple credit this man, the celebrated bird photographer Manu Espinosa, with changing their lives, and helping them persuade others of the vital importance of conservation in this region. Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species — nearly double the number found in all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK. As the business of birding grows, more and more farmers are switching their land from agriculture to bird reserves, benefiting not just the birds, but the country’s economy too. One notable example is the Ajila family, who have devoted themselves to preserving the long-wattled umbrellabird. On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists — work that he says is a better livelihood than farming. “Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation,” says Luis Jr., Ajila’s son. “We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations.” Since 2005, Angel Paz has transformed his former dairy farm into a bird reserve. At first, things didn’t go to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife — and the people who visit — flourish,” Angel Paz says. 4. What advice did the photographer give to the couple? A. Photographing the birds. B. Coexisting with the birds. C. Protecting their precious crops. D. Taking care of their property. 5. What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about? A. How Ecuador is geographically unique. B What distinguishes Ecuador’s biodiversity. C. What makes Ecuador a birding destination. D. How birding tourism is operated in Ecuador. 6 What have the Ajila family achieved? A. Helping other farmers shake off poverty. B. Combining profitability with sustainability. C. Applying new technology in modern farming. D. Changing the landscapes of their residential areas. 7. What can we learn from Ángel Paz’s story? A. Well begun is half done. B. It takes time to bear fruit. C The early bird catches the worm. D. The secret to success is adaptability. C Most people can recall a time when they were in a bad mood after a long day at work and the barista (咖啡师) gave them a warm smile? Or maybe they overheard their bus-mate speaking German and ended up filling the morning commute (通勤) with a stimulating conversation about an upcoming trip? Strangers are around you most of the day, and what if you spend time interacting with them? A new approach urges just that. The Atlantic examines the benefits of speaking to strangers by discussing the work of psychologist Gillian Sandstrom. She considered herself an introvert (内向的人) growing up. However, about a decade ago, she started experimenting with talking to strangers. It was awkward at the beginning, but eventually Sandstrom got better at making positive connections with or smiling at the people she passed every day, and it made her feel better. Strangers represent possible relationships and interactions. If you take the time to drop a warm smile or a kind word to a stranger, at worst this interaction couldn’t be reciprocated. At best, you can sometimes have an extended conversation with a stranger, learn something interesting from them, or make a new friend. Nicholas Epley, a psychologist at the University of Chicago conducted a study, in which participants spoke to strangers on public transportation during their morning commutes. Not only did the group speaking to strangers report having a more enjoyable commute, but conversations with seatmates lasted, on average, 14.2 minutes. According to Epley, loneliness was one of the most dangerous social stressors and was even more physically harmful than overweight. “It’s larger than air pollution and it’s larger than physical activity and exercise,” he said. Making connections with those around us could ease loneliness and its harmful impacts. Considering all the benefits of conversing with strangers, why not take advantage of being around people you don’t know? Flash a smile or start up a conversation, and you may make two persons’ day better. 8. Why does the author mention the examples in the first paragraph? A. To show the value of a warm smile. B. To find spots for talking with strangers. C. To put forward the communication methods. D. To introduce the topic of interactions with strangers. 9. What does the underlined word “reciprocated” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Evaluated. B. Remembered. C. Responded. D. Employed. 10. What can we learn from Epley’s study? A. Most commuters tend to talk with strangers. B. Physical activity helps to reduce loneliness. C. Social interactions make participants less stressed. D. Participants remove their negative emotions totally. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. Social interactions for stress relief. B. Benefits of interacting with strangers. C. Skills of getting along with strangers. D. Importance of talks during commutes. D We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done? The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams. These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport. 12. What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1? A. We should not be too optimistic about the future. B. Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems. C. It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones. D. It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles. 13. What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 2? A. payment B. income C. encouragement D. method 14. Which statement is true according to the passage? A. Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future. B. Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future. C. There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric. D. Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”. 15. What is the most suitable title for the text? A. Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go B. Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future C. Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make D. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases Career planning is a vital step towards achieving success and fulfillment in our lives. Throughout her practice, there have been many unusual cases. Some were quite sad and some were even funny. But most of all she remembered one time on a rainy day a little girl came to her with her little guinea pig (豚鼠). She was in tears and asked Jenny to save her beloved pet. “This is my only friend. I really love my Dorothy,” the girl said. Jenny examined the animal and realized that it was very ill. The pig looked young. Probably, it was already sick when it was sold to the girl. The vet saw many children’s tears, and each time she felt awful. But she always found the strength to say that she couldn’t save the pet. However, this time she looked at the girl and couldn’t say anything. Jenny saw how simply the girl was dressed and thought that her family didn’t make a lot of money. Therefore, the pig wasn’t just a pet for her, but a real treasure. “Tell me your phone number, so I can call you after the operation,” Jenny said. “I’ll give you my grandmother’s phone number, because I live with her. My parents were gone. Grandma said that they had gone somewhere far and for a long time. By the way, they gave me the pig before leaving,” the girl said. Jenny wrote down the number, and when the girl left the clinic, she burst into tears. She realized her parents had died and the girl didn’t know the truth yet. How could she tell her that her guinea pig was going to die? Jenny looked at the animal helplessly and wondered what she could do. Suddenly she came up with an idea. You could do it by plane, train or car. But author Paul Carter decided to tour the country on a homemade motorcycle that runs on cooking oil.(在澳大利亚有很多种旅行方式。 You Are Awful (But I Like You) Travels Through Unloved Britain by Tim Moore部分的“Follow him as he heads to “the bleakest towns, the worst hotels and the scariest pubs”. And to make matters worse, he does it in the middle of winter. “My primary challenge was to have a good time in places that everyone had said I wouldn’t,” said the author.(跟随他前往“最荒凉的城镇,最糟糕的酒店和最可怕的酒吧”。 New experiences. Interesting people. Read about other people’s exciting travels around the world with these three books.(冒险。 B Soon after Mr. B. What distinguishes Ecuador’s biodiversity. C. What makes Ecuador a birding destination. D. How birding tourism is operated in Ecuador. 6. What have the Ajila family achieved? C. The early bird catches the worm. D. The secret to success is adaptability. B 5. C 6. B 7. 由第一段中“Afterwards, he suggested that instead of trying to get rid of the birds, they should instead learn to live alongside them, and Maraksacha Reserve was born. 由第三段“Birding tourism is flourishing in Ecuador, with increasing numbers of specialist tour groups. Ecuador contains a variety of ecosystems at differing elevations, which helps explain why it’s among the top 10 countries in the world for bird diversity. The country is home to over 1,600 bird species — nearly double the number found in all of Europe — within an area just slightly larger than the UK. 由第四段中“On his land near Recinto, landowner Luis Ajila has switched from dairy farming to conservation, replanting trees and promoting the site to wildlife tourists — work that he says is a better livelihood than farming. (在累西托附近的土地上,土地所有者路易斯·阿吉拉(Luis Ajila)已经从奶牛养殖转向了保护,重新种植了树木,并向野生动物游客推广了该地——他说这项工作比农业更能维持生计)”和第五段中Luis Jr., Ajila’s son说的话“Wildlife tourism is much more profitable than farming, but that wasn’t our only motivation (野生动物旅游比农业更有利,但这不是我们唯一的动机)”“We aimed to protect not just the umbrellabird, but all the unique wildlife here, safeguarding them for future generations. 由最后一段中“At first, things didn’t go to plan: it took a month for the first visitor to arrive, and he paid just $10 for a four-hour tour. Since then, however, thousands of people have made the pilgrimage. “I have protected my home and its birdlife for almost two decades, and finally watched the wildlife — and the people who visit — flourish,” Angel Paz says. D 9. C 10. C 11. 根据第一段中“Strangers are around you most of the day, and what if you spend time interacting with them? A new approach urges just that. 根据划线词所在句“If you take the time to drop a warm smile or a kind word to a stranger, at worst (如果你花时间对陌生人报以温暖的微笑或说一句善意的话,最坏的情况)”可知,此处指对陌生人报以微笑或说善意的话,最坏的情况是得不到回应,由此推知,划线词reciprocated与responded意思相近,意为“回应”。 根据倒数第二段中“According to Epley, loneliness was one of the most dangerous social stressors and was even more physically harmful than overweight. Making connections with those around us could ease loneliness and its harmful impacts. 根据文章大意以及第一段中“Strangers are around you most of the day, and what if you spend time interacting with them? A new approach urges just that. B。 D We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. B Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future. Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. 根据第一段最后一句“But is that easier said than done?(但这说起来容易做起来难吗?)” 第二段第一句“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)” 根据划线词前一句“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power.(成本是另一个可能阻碍人们转向电力的问题。)”和划线词后的“such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. 文章第二段讲到“Currently, battery life is an issue (目前,电池寿命是一个问题)”以及“Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. 最后一段讲到“But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future (但是科林·赫伦警告说“电动汽车”并不意味着零碳排放的未来)”可知,A项“电动汽车将创造一个零碳的未来”是错误的。第二段还讲到“The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars (固态电池将带来巨大的飞跃,它将首先出现在手机和笔记本电脑中,然后才会发展为汽车)”可知,D项“首先将固态电池应用于电动汽车将是一次“大跃进””是错误的。根据第二段“Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.(一些国家还为电动汽车提供专用车道,超越可能陷入拥堵的传统汽车。)” 通读全文,尤其是第二段“The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off.(实现全球交通完全电动化的道路还有很长的路要走。)” 故选A。 Career planning is a vital step towards achieving success and fulfillment in our lives. But before doing it, she put the guinea pig to sleep, and went to the nearest pet store during lunchtime. She wanted to buy exactly the same guinea pig and give it to the girl. However, finding it wasn’t so easy. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Her grandmother understood everything the moment she saw the pet, but the girl didn’t notice the change. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 However, finding it wasn’t so easy. The sick pet was black with a white spot on the nose, which was uniquely uncommon. Her attempt to find one nearby in vain, a flush of disappointment swept over Jenny. However, at the thought of the girl’s misty eyes, Jenny continuously went to extraordinary lengths to find a matching pig. Fortunately, her persistent efforts paid off. In a store 8 kilometers away from her clinic, she found an identical pig. Hardly had she returned to the clinic when she called the girl, “Honey, good news for you. Dorothy has pulled through and you can take her home!” On hearing the news, the girl hurried to the pet store with her grandmother. Her grandmother understood everything the moment she saw the pet, but the girl didn’t notice the change. Eyes twinkling with excitement, tears of joy streamed down her cheeks. Meanwhile, grandma directed a meaningful look at Jenny, a great sense of gratitude flowing in her aged eyes, saying tearfully, “My dear doctor, you’ve really saved Dorothy and also protected her owner’s sunshine.” With her hands held tightly by grandma, Jenny truly realized a tiny gesture of kindness may brighten up someone’s life. Roses given, fragrance in hand. With her heart lightening up with happiness, Jenny was determined to keep kindness alive in her clinic and guard everyone’s “Dorothy”. 2. 续写线索:寻找无果——坚持不懈找到一只相似的豚鼠——打电话告知女孩——女孩兴奋——奶奶感激——感悟 3 词汇激活 行为类 ①寻找:find/search/pursue/seek ②保护:protect/safeguard/defend ③意识到:realize/be aware 情绪类 ①失望:disappointment/despair/discouragement/dismay ②喜悦:joy/delight/happiness 【点睛】【高分句型1】The sick pet was black with a white spot on the nose, which was uniquely uncommon.
