Zhang Xue excitedly waved the red flag. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for 20 years...We have won!” On March 28th, Chinese company ZXMOTO won the championship at the Portuguese round of the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) with an advantage of nearly four seconds, becoming the first Chinese manufacturer to win an international motorcycle event for medium and large models. This victory is a historic breakthrough (突破) and ended the 37-year monopoly (垄断) of European, American, and Japanese motorcycle brands in the WSBK race.
At the WSBK viewing carnival (嘉年华) on Chongqing’s Guangyang Island, Zhang Xue was moved to tears of joy. After winning the championship, he posted a video saying, “Sometimes, when you do something, you’re not aiming for the result but doing it out of love. Maybe the result will truly be different.”
It took Zhang Xue 20 years to reach this moment. In 1987, Zhang Xue was born in a small mountain village in Huaihua, Hunan. As a child, he loved motorcycles. After graduating from junior high school in 2003, he became an apprentice (学徒) at a motorcycle repair shop. At the age of 17, he opened his own repair shop. Over the following 20 years, his entire life revolved around motorcycles: he was a full-time racing driver, worked for a motorcycle company, fixed and sold motorcycles, and eventually started his own business to build motorcycles.
There was only one thing in his mind: motorcycles. He didn’t think about anything else. Many employees of ZXMOTO come from different industries, and some come to Chongqing from all over the country, mostly because of Zhang Xue. Netizens call him the “Lei Jun of the motorcycle circle” — a popular blogger with millions of fans in the motorcycle circle and a “motorcycle tycoon” who builds motorcycles.
4. What achievement did ZXMOTO make?
A. A first prize in small-model races. B. An end to 20 years of foreign control.
C. A full success in European rounds. D. A breakthrough for China in WSBK.
5. What did Zhang Xue express in his video?
A. Love may lead to success. B. Success may happen by chance.
C. Process matters over outcome. D. Hard work makes life meaningful.
6. What does the underlined phrase “revolved around” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Worried about. B. Centered on. C. Prepared for. D. Began with.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Zhang Xue?
A. Talented and competitive. B. Patient and cheerful.
C. Strong-willed and focused. D. Creative and easy-going.

A new study carried out among teenagers in a high school theater program showed how teens learned about how to use positive emotions to drive their work. Students also used strategies to manage their own and others’ bad emotions. The research was carried out through interviews (访谈) with the students during a three-month theater program. This study showed how school theater programs can support the development of “emotional intelligence” in teenagers.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get an in-depth understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical. Two adults who guided the production were also interviewed every two weeks. What’s more, the researchers observed the rehearsals (排练) weekly.
During the rehearsals, teenagers reported emotional experiences, including sadness, anger, anxiety, and excitement. The program provided culture that helped them learn to deal well with the events and feelings connected to these different emotions, the researchers found. The adults led by example, helping the teens develop strategies to manage strong emotions.
“The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with incomplete emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, teenagers learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional learning.”
8. What did the new study find?
A. Theater programs are popular among high schoolers.
B. Doing theater helps teenagers with emotional growth.
C. Emotional skills are important to student success.
D. High school teaching is a performing art.
9. How did the researchers get information for the study?
A. By holding interviews. B. By preparing a musical.
C. By teaching at the local school. D. By reviewing students’ performances.
10. What role did the adults play in the theater program?
A. They experienced the same emotions as the teens.
B. They were close observers of the program.
C. They provided models for the students.
D. They were in control of the new study.
11. What is Reed W. Larson’s attitude towards the theater program?
A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Worried. D. Supportive.

Friendship is very important for your child. But do you know how to teach a child to make friends?
Teach your child to follow rules and limits. Playing games is one way to find friends with similar interests. Your child will feel more confident making friends if he knows the rules for the games and can join in actively.
Give your child opportunities to play with other children of his age. Talk about how to behave himself at a birthday party. Listen to his feelings and help him think of ideas for how to respond to each situation.
Teach your child conversational and listening skills such as eye contact, nodding and asking questions about what the other person is saying. Help him understand and clearly express himself using feeling words, such as excited, happy, sad, angry, nervous or calm.
Encourage your child to accept others as they are, not as he wishes them to be. Make a habit of being helpful to your child and teach him to do the same for others. In other words, whether your child makes friends easily or slowly, teach him that the best way to make friends is to be the kind of friend he would like to have.
When you teach your child to make friends, you build a basis of good character by teaching him about sharing and taking turns, kindness, patience, respect, gratitude, clear communication and cooperation.
12. If a child wants to make friends in games, teach him to _________.
A. help other children B. be more confident

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

Dear Hans,
Balancing studies and extracurricular activities is really challenging in high school. However, don’t worry. I have some useful suggestions to help you manage both well.
First, set specific time periods for studying each subject and for various extracurricular activities. This way, you can make sure neither gets neglected. Second, list out the things that need to be done first. If a test is coming up, spend more time studying. Finally, learn to say no. Avoid signing up for too many activities. Choose the ones you truly enjoy and that help you grow.
I hope these suggestions are helpful to you.
Yours,

【答案】Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However, it was soon that they realized that they couldn't solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their idea among youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges are and what advice they have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added, “keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.
