Two weeks earlier, my son, Ben, had got in touch. He'd moved to England with his mum when he was three and it had been 13 years since I'd last seen him. So imagine my delight when he emailed me saying he wanted to come to visit me.
I was thrilled! I arrived early at Byron Bay where we were supposed to meet. The bay was bathed in sunshine, and there was a group of kayakers around 150m off the shore. Getting a little closer, I realized one kayak was in trouble. "Something's not right!" I took off my T-shirt and dived into the water. I saw there were two instructors on board and a man lying across the middle. He was shaking violently. Linking arms with one of the instructors, I helped carry the young man out of the water. He was unconscious and as I looked at his face, something occurred to me. Those brown eyes were very familiar. "What's his name?" I asked the instructor. "Ben," he replied, and immediately I knew. That stranger was my son!
The instructors called for an ambulance. Fortunately, after a brief stay in hospital, Ben was well enough to be allowed to leave and later the family met up for dinner. We chatted about everything and then Ben turned to me. "I just want to say thank you," he said, "You saved my life!"
I still can't believe what a coincidence it was. I'm just so glad I was there in time to help my son.

Passage 1
Ben moved to England with his mother when he was three. It had been 13 years since I last saw him. I felt great delight when he said he wanted to visit me. I was thrilled. I arrived early at the meeting place. The bay was bathed in sunshine. As I got closer, I saw a kayak in trouble. Something was not right. I dived into the water. A man was shaking violently. Together with an instructor, I carried him out of the water. He was unconscious.
Passage 2
As I looked at his face, something occurred to me. His eyes were familiar. I asked his name. When the instructor said "Ben," I knew immediately — the stranger was my son! Fortunately, after a short stay in hospital, Ben was well enough to leave. We had dinner together. Ben turned to me and thanked me. He said I had saved his life. I couldn't believe it was such a coincidence.
Passage 3
Some moments in life seem too perfect to be true. They feel like a story written by fate itself. Meeting my son after 13 years was one of those moments. But what makes it even more remarkable is that I was there in time to save him. I didn't know he was in trouble, but I acted without thinking — and that instinct saved his life. This experience taught me that sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways. We may not understand the reason behind the coincidence, but we can be grateful for it. It reminded me of the importance of being present, of trusting our instincts, and of never underestimating the power of a simple act of kindness — because you never know who might need it or when the moment will come that makes everything clear.

Passage 1
Passage 2
Passage 3
