Taking a nap is a good way for students to relax after lunch. To make it more comfortable, many middle and high schools use foldable(可折叠的)desks and chairs. However, not all of these desks and chairs are well designed—some are the wrong size or shape, and their poor design may even cause discomfort or harm to students.
To solve this,a new national rule was rolled out on Sept.2.It explains clearly how to make and use foldable desks and chairs correctly.
In primary schools, desks should be between 45.5 and 73 centimeters tall.In middle schools, they should be between 56.5 and 79 cm tall.Chairs should be at least 36cm wide to help students sit well. For naps, the chairs can be turned into a bed.A bed should be at least 105 cm long, and the backrest(靠背)should lean back more than 135 degrees.
The desks and chairs must also be strong. For example,a chair can be folded up to 10,000 times. They should also be easy to clean. If ink gets on them, students should be able to clean it with an eraser.
The new rule will take effect on Feb.1 next year. Before that, experts said that schools still need to think about a few things. For example,do the new desks fit in different classrooms? And are they good for classes with many students?

Happiness is a feeling that lights up your eyes, makes your steps light and makes you want to sing for no reason.Everyone wants to be happy. But sometimes,a guest comes in without an invitation. It's unhappiness.Don't let it get you down.Send it away!
When you are happy, the world feels like a better place. As the saying goes,“When you smile, the world smiles with you;when you cry,you cry alone.”Wearing a smile will make you more charming(迷人的)and help you to win lots of friends.A good mood always gives you hope, which makes problems easier to work out.
No matter how happy you are,it's normal to feel angry and sad sometimes.Life is full of ups and downs. We can't change the way life is,but we can do our best to change a bad situation into a good one.To do this,it's good to know some of the factors(因素)that influence happiness.
One of the biggest factors is the social relationship.People who are close to their family and friends are happier than those who don't have those relationships.Talking and sharing are good ways to relax and build confidence.Knowing someone is there for you will make you braver and more outgoing.
Another factor is work or school. If you enjoy school, even if you have lots of homework or extra classes, you will still feel that your school life is meaningful and happy. But if you hate school, your negative attitude(消极的态度)may cause you to feel bored and upset.
A third factor is your attitude towards life. How do you feel if you fail an exam?Maybe you think it's unfair because you always study hard and should have got a good mark. You can't stop blaming(责怪)yourself.Or,maybe you accept it.You go through the paper carefully, find out why you made stupid mistakes, and tell yourself,“Take it easy!I'll do better next time!”Your attitude makes a big difference.

According to a new study by scientists from the University of Chicago in the US,English-speaking children start making their own sentences at about 2.5 years old.To do this, kids need to first understand the rules of the language. For English, one important rule is that determiners(限定词),like“a”and“the”,go in front of nouns.
Every four months, the scientists recorded 64 English-speaking children talking with their parents. The scientists found that at around 30 months later, kids started-using both“a”and“The”in-front of the same noun, for example,“dog”.This showed that they understood the determiner-noun language pattern(模式).What's more, they were using the pattern to create more expressions their parents-had never said.
But the recording cannot cover everything the kids hear and say each-day.So -the scientists developed an AI model to double check their findings.Like a human child, the model could find language patterns in the recordings and predict the words to come.“For the most part,it does what the kids-do,”Susan Goldin, one of the scientists, told Neuroscience News. The team then wanted to see when the model produced its first new determiner-noun phrase. The result was the same as the study on-kids.

Friendship Among Elderly People in China
In recent years, more and more elderly people in China have been building strong friendships, which bring them joy and support in their later lives.
Ms.Wang,72 years old, lives in Beijing. She made friends with three other women—Ms.Li,Ms.Zhang,and Ms.Zhao—at a community garden five years ago.Every morning, they meet at the garden to do tai chi(太极)together. After that, they sit on a bench and chat about their daily lives—their children, their grandchildren,or interesting things they saw on TV.“Before I met them,I felt very lonely,"Ms.Wang said.“My children work in other cities,so I live alone. But now,I look forward to every morning because I know I will see my friends.”
These four friends also help each other in many ways.Last year,Ms.Li fell and hurt her leg.Ms.Wang,
Ms.Zhang, and Ms.Zhao took turns visiting her and bringing her meals. They also helped her clean her house and take care of her plants.“They are like my family,”Ms.Li said.“I don’t know what I would have done without them.”Another group of elderly friends in Shanghai has a different way of staying connected. They formed a“book club”three years ago.Every Saturday afternoon, they meet at a community center to read and discuss books. Most of the books they read are about Chinese history or traditional culture.“Reading together helps us learn new things, and discussing the books brings us closer,"said Mr.Chen,78 years old.“We also share our own stories and experiences while talking about the books. It's very interesting."
These friendships are not just fun—they also have many health benefits.Studies show that elderly people with strong friendships are less likely to feel lonely or depressed(抑郁的).They also have better physical health, because they are more active and take better care of themselves when they have friends to support them.
Many communities in China are now encouraging elderly people to make friends. They organize activities like tai chi classes, book clubs, and craft workshops. (C)请阅读下面语篇,根据其内容回答问题。
In the past, connecting(与……有联系)with friends meant spending time with them in person(亲自).But now it is different.
Know More
In the past, people connected with friends in simple ways. They often met friends face-to-face.They would go to their friends' homes to play or chat.Sometimes, they would meet at places like parks or small shops. They could talk and have a good time together.
With the development of the technology(科技),people's life has changed greatly.Today, most young people like to connect with their friends online better. They think it is a good way to connect with their friends. However, some people think connecting with friends online may make them lose their real-world friendships(友谊).Do you agree with it?Here are some ideas.
Agree
Technology hurts friendships. When we communicate with our friends in front of a screen,it's easier to misread(误解)their tones(语气)or body language. We might think our friends are smiling while they're upset.
A friend might send a text message as a joke that says,“You're the worst friend!”But our feelings might be hurt because we think he's serious.
Disagree
I'm Frank.I don't think technology hurts friendships.In fact,it can make them stronger.
For example,my best friends live in California where I used to live. The last time I met them in person was three years ago.But I talk to them online every week.It feels like they're right here with me.Without technology,we can't be such close friends.

1.What is the new national rule about?
2.What are two requirements(要求)for the desks and chairs besides(除了)size and shape?
3.Do you want to take a nap with such desks and chairs? Why or why not?

Do you smile a lot or wear a long face most of the time?

When babies are really young, they like to copy what their parents say.But at some point, they start becoming“creators”.So when does the change happen?
The findings can further scientists' understanding of language learning. They can also help teach kids with special needs, such as those learning sign language.
1.At what age do English-speaking children start making their own sentences?
2.What do you think of the findings? And why?
3.How did the scientists record the children's language development?
4.Why did the scientists develop an AI model to double check their findings?
5.When did the AI model produce its first new determiner-noun phrase?

These activities give elderly people a chance to meet others and build new friendships.“We want to help elderly people live happy and healthy lives,” said a community worker in Guangzhou.“Friendship is an important part of that.”

According to experts, staying connected online is not enough to build true friendships. Spending time together face-to-face is quite important, especially when people are in trouble. During the hard times, people don't need someone who likes their pictures or posts. What they really need is someone who can offer them help.
1.What did connecting with friends mean in the past?
2.Why do some people think technology hurts friendships?
3.Where do Frank's best friends live?
4.What do experts think is important to build true friendships?
5.What do you think people need when they're in trouble? And how do you help your friend in trouble?
6.What is important to build true friendship according to experts?
7. Do you want to connect with your friends online or in person? Why?
