In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. It allows us to connect with friends, family, and even strangers from all over the world. However, the question of whether social media is a blessing or a curse has sparked intense debate.
On one hand, social media provides numerous benefits. It enables us to share our lives, experiences, and ideas with a vast audience instantly. For students, it can be a great platform to collaborate on school projects, exchange study resources, and learn from each other. Moreover, it helps long-distance relationships stay strong as people can easily keep in touch through photos, videos, and messages.
On the other hand, social media also has its downsides. The constant stream of information can be overwhelming and distracting. Many people find themselves spending hours scrolling through their feeds, wasting precious time that could have been used for more productive activities. Additionally, the spread of false information is a major concern. Rumors and fake news can travel at lightning speed on social media, causing panic and confusion among the public.
Another negative aspect is the potential impact on mental health. Studies have shown that excessive use of social media can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and low self-esteem. People often compare their lives to the seemingly perfect lives of others they see online, which can make them feel inadequate.
In conclusion, while social media offers many advantages, we must also be aware of its drawbacks and use it responsibly. By setting limits on our usage and being critical of the information we consume, we can make the most of this powerful tool without falling victim to its negative effects.
8. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Social media is only beneficial to people.
B. Social media has both positive and negative aspects.
C. Social media is a curse and should be avoided.
D. Social media helps students with their studies only.
9. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a benefit of social media?
A. Enabling people to share their lives.
B. Helping long-distance relationships.
C. Spreading false information.
D. Providing a platform for students to collaborate.
10. Why can social media have a negative impact on mental health?
A. Because it makes people feel lonely, anxious, and have low self-esteem.
B. Because it takes up too much of people’s time.
C. Because it provides too much useful information.
D. Because it helps people connect with strangers.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards social media?
A. Totally positive. B. Totally negative.
C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.

Two years ago, as my then-9-year-old son, George, and I were preparing for a mom-son ski trip to Keystone, Colorado, I came up with a rule: We would say yes to everything that comes our way.
George is a picky eater and can be unwilling to try new things. According to him, it’s because he has fears, including heights, spiders and the dark. I was hoping to find a solution. So I borrowed the idea of a Yes Day, inspired by a movie I watched. Before the trip, George and I agreed we would say yes to everything, especially new ones.
Settled at our hotel, I took George to meet his snowboarding instructor. Though he had basic lessons in Connecticut, this was his first time on a larger mountain. While he learned, I skied by myself, choosing an easy green run on the first day. Inspired by George’s bravery on the chairlift (升降机) , I challenged myself to ski a more demanding blue run the next day. It was steep, but with careful turns, I made it down in one piece, feeling proud of conquering a new challenge.
Later that afternoon, when George and I were reunited, he asked if we could go in the outdoor hot tub (浴池). Mind you, it was a 20-degree day, and the only thing I hate more than being cold is being cold and wet! When I started to refuse, George reminded me of the rule.
Yes, it was cold, and yes, I was wet. But it was also refreshing to feel the cold air on my skin, and the warm water of the hot tub felt that much better once we got in. Getting out was a different story, but the experience was a delight as George and I braved it together.
Developing a sense of adventure helps us live life to the fullest — even if you sometimes wind up cold and wet.
12. Why did the writer start a “Yes Day” rule?
A. To conquer George’s ski fears.
B. To master new snowboarding skills.
C. To encourage George to try new things.
D. To win in snowboarding competitions.
13. Which of the following best describes George?
A. Confident. B. Courageous. C. Positive. D. Responsible.
14. What can we learn about the writer from paragraph 4&5?
A. She was eager to go in the outdoor hot tub.
B. She regretted breaking the rule with George.
C. She felt much better when she got out of the tub.
D. She found it rewarding to brave the experience.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Welcoming Yes: A Family Adventure
B. Family Ski Trip: Mountain Memories
C. Ski Challenges: Winter Wonders
D. Braving Winter: Family Unity

C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. C

【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. A

Besides, you can try to improve your listening and comprehension skills by listening to Chinese radio programs and watching Chinese TV shows and movies. This is also a fun way to learn about Chinese culture. Most importantly, practice makes perfect. Seize every chance to practice what you’ve learned. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes when you speak. The more you practice, the more fluent you will become.
I believe you’ll make great progress.
Best wishes.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

36-year-old Mary was a mother living in a small town in Cleveland with her 3-year-old twin sons, Jack and James. She worked hard to provide for her children, doing a few part-time jobs to make money. One Saturday morning, Mary was at home with her children, preparing breakfast for them when a fire broke out in the kitchen. Frightened, Mary took hold of Jack and rushed towards the front door. They made it to safety only to find James remained inside. Mary put Jack down and turned back to get James out, but she fell on the ground. Mary sat on the ground helplessly, her tears mixed with screams: “My kid is still in the house. Somebody help me!”
At that very moment, Simon, 52, a former army soldier happened to hear her cries and saw the terrible scene. He immediately ran to ask the crying mother where her kid exactly was. Mary said, “In the bedroom next to the kitchen.” The fire spread quickly and the house was filled with smoke. Simon looked around and saw a blanket hanging beside a pool full of water in the middle of the yard.

【答案】Without hesitation, Simon took action. He quickly grabbed the blanket and soaked it thoroughly in the pool of water. Wrapping the wet blanket tightly around himself, he lowered his head to avoid the thick choking smoke and rushed straight into the burning house. The high temperature burned his skin, and thick smoke made it hard for him to breathe, but he ignored the pain and kept moving forward. Guided by Mary’s repeated reminders, he struggled through the fire and finally spotted little James crying helplessly in the corner of the bedroom. He gently picked up the terrified boy and held him firmly in his arms.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. As soon as they got out of danger, Mary rushed over eagerly and held her son tightly, bursting into tears of relief. She kept thanking Simon repeatedly, who risked his own life to rescue her little son, for saving her child’s life. Seeing the mother and son safe and sound, Simon let out a long sigh of relief, ignoring his burnt hands and exhausted body. Soon the firemen arrived and put out the remaining fire completely. Thanks to Simon’s bravery and selflessness, the terrible accident ended without more losses, leaving everyone touched by this warm act of kindness.
