Highland Cow Art
Highland cow art has become increasingly popular for its unique combination of rural charm and artistic variety. Artists such as Mark Gemmell, Domonique Brown, and Steven Brown create lively images of these famous Scottish animals through different styles — some realistic, some abstract, and some playful. Their works often show Scotland’s natural scenery and cultural traditions, making each painting a celebration of the region’s beauty. When choosing highland cow art for your home, consider the size and colors of the piece to ensure it fits well with your room. Whether you like detailed realism or striking abstraction, there is a style for everyone, adding special character to any space.
Styles and Techniques
Highland cow art covers a wide range of styles, from lifelike paintings to creative abstract works. Realistic techniques focus on careful details to show the texture (纹理) and personality of the cattle, while abstract methods use bright colors and imaginative shapes to create emotional effects. This variety not only shows the artists’ skill but also meets different personal tastes.
Realistic Painting Approaches
Creating lifelike paintings of highland cows requires excellent skills in layering (分层), blending (混合), and careful brushwork to truly capture their textures and expressions. Photorealism, one approach to realistic art, involves copying the animals with extreme precision, using special brush techniques to produce natural-looking textures and depth. To achieve this level of realism, artists must: first, carefully observe the animal’s body structure, colors, and proportions to ensure accuracy; second, apply multiple layers of paint to capture the complex details of fur and expressions; third, smoothly mix colors to create natural transitions and realistic shading.
21. What should be considered when choosing highland cow art for home decoration?
A. The artist’s reputation and fame. B. The size and colors of the artwork.
C. The historical value of the painting. D. The emotional effects of abstract styles.
22. What do realistic techniques in highland cow art emphasize?
A. The emotional effects of the cattle. B. The imaginative shapes of the cattle.
C. The texture and personality of the cattle. D. The bright colors of the cattle.
23. What is the first step in creating a photorealistic painting of highland cows?
A. Studying the animal’s body structure closely.
B. Mixing colors smoothly to create natural shading.
C. Applying many layers of paint to capture details.
D. Using special brushes to produce depth and texture.

Locust swarms (蝗虫群) can cover hundreds of square miles, and the insects consume vast amounts of vegetation, threatening global agriculture.
In a study, scientists identified a surprisingly simple strategy: using a nitrogen fertilizer-based (NFB, 基于氮肥的) method to help control the pests. Nitrogen is the main building block of proteins.
In Senegal, the potential new solution lies in intervening in how locusts sustain their swarming behavior. A high-carbohydrate diet is the key to locust swarming, as locusts rely on it to build up fat reserves that fuel population growth and long-distance migration. In contrast, high-protein, low-carb (碳水化合物) crops are far less appealing to the species, so planting such crops could help prevent swarming. In field tests, crop plots treated with nitrogen-based fertilizer produced high-protein, low-carb crops.
Over several months, in central Senegal, scientists worked with 100 farmers from two villages. Each farmer grew a grain called millet in two plots: one treated with commercial nitrogen fertilizer and the other untreated. The scientists then surveyed the fields for pest populations and crop damage three times throughout the growing season. They found that the fertilizer treatment significantly decreased pest populations and crop damage, while increasing millet yield.
Daniel Gebregiorgis, a climate scientist at the Department of Geosciences, Georgia State University, says that while the method for locust management is a promising solution, its widespread use may be challenging because outbreaks often occur in remote areas. Many locust management strategies also face difficulties with widespread application in places with limited connectivity. Daniel emphasizes that this new research is particularly significant since human-caused climate change is driving an increase in locust outbreaks.
Because of global warming, many regions receive above-average rainfall. Coupled with rising temperatures and wetter soil, conditions for locust reproduction are increasingly met. Increasing storm activity makes this climate shift the key factor behind locust outbreaks. Human activities like overplanting also contribute to locust swarms. These actions damage land and worsen soil quality, producing low-nitrogen soil that supports carb-rich plants — plants that help locusts grow and support long-distance swarms.
24. How did scientists control locusts?
A. By changing their food supply. B. By providing them with more protein.
C. By reducing their protein intake. D. By raising their carb consumption.
25. What is the function of paragraph 4?
A. To introduce the farming process. B. To prove the method’s efficiency.
C. To compare different crop yields. D. To describe farmers’ cooperation.
26. What is Daniel’s attitude to the wide adoption of the NFB method?
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Unclear. D. Uncertain.
27. What does the author think locust outbreaks reflect?
A. The harm of overplanting to soil. B. The overuse of chemical fertilizers.
C. The current severe climate crisis. D. The long history of human activities.

When people feel stuck at work, they often assume the problem is a skill gap. They need more experience, better training, or another certification. But in many cases, missed opportunities have less to do with competence and more to do with how your personality patterns are showing up on the job. You can be very good at what you do and still be overlooked for what comes next.
Kelly is acknowledged as a dependable, organized, and helpful employee. When a task needs to get done, people trust her to handle it. But when leadership opportunities opened up, Kelly was never selected. When she asked for feedback, she was told that no one questioned her competence, but she wasn’t seen as someone who would lead change or set innovative new directions. Kelly’s personality hadn’t suddenly become an obstacle. It just mismatched what her desired role required.
Leadership in her organization demanded visibility, confidence, and innovation. Kelly’s quest for inbox zero took time away from big-picture thinking, and her tendency to wait until she was absolutely sure before speaking — once an asset — now worked against her. Advancement tends to require a different set of traits: comfort with uncertainty, influence, visibility, and strategic risk-taking.
It is possible to shift your traits so they fit your next step. Most people view personality as their underlying essence that explains how they think, feel, and behave. Yet this understanding of personality doesn’t line up with personality science. Instead, personality traits are a description of your patterns, not the cause of them. And people adjust how they think and behave all the time. This can happen when you’re thrown into a new role or environment that pulls for you to show up differently. In other words, personality is not set in stone. And you don’t have to wait for changes in your environment to draw new habits and thinking patterns out of you. You can intentionally try on new behaviors that better align with the roles you desire.
28. What can we learn from Kelly’s previous work strengths?
A. They held back her big-picture thinking.
B. They were seen as innovative by leaders.
C. They brought no benefit to her daily work.
D. They were ignored by her company leaders.
29. What does the underlined word “asset” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A financial property.
B. A leadership skill.
C. A work responsibility.
D. A valuable characteristic.
30. Which statement would the author probably agree with?
A. Environments determine personality.
B. Ability guarantees career promotion.
C. Behavioral adaptation is achievable.
D. Personality is the driver of behavior.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Competence in Career Development
B. Personality in Career Advancement
C. The Role of Skills in Career Success
D. Leadership Risks in Professional Growth

Are you worried about your data being stolen on public WiFi? Concerned about devices being hacked on public charging points? Hesitant about scanning that QR code? Don’t be: these are fears based in myth. Experts have written an open letter to “correct a set of persistent myths about digital risk to everyday people and small businesses”.
Top of the list is to “avoid public WiFi”, which many credible sources still say is unsafe. In October, Google offered advice in a report on text scams — avoid using public WiFi whenever possible, as these networks can be insecure and easily used by attackers. But the experts say that “large-scale attacks via public WiFi are exceptionally rare today. Modern products use encryption (加密) technologies to protect your traffic even on open networks and operating systems, and browsers now warn users about untrusted connections”.
They also break the myth of avoiding QR codes — “there is no evidence of widespread crime originating from QR-code scanning itself” — and the myth of turning off Bluetooth and contactless capability — “wireless attacks in the wild are extraordinarily rare and typically require specialized hardware and physical nearness.”
If you regularly change your password or clear cookies (缓存), then don’t bother, the experts add. Deleting cookies “doesn’t meaningfully improve security or stop modern tracking.” Changing your password often leads to weaker passwords and reuse across accounts, which are security “no-nos”.
The letter is the brainchild of Bob Lord, former security chief for Yahoo and Twitter, who has been annoyed by “hacklore” for some time. He said someone sent him an article that talked about public WiFi, QR codes, USB charging stations and a few other things. And he said, “I need to turn my eye-rolling into something productive and to share it with the world.” Lord emphasized that the advice in the letter was aimed at the public but high-risk individuals such as activists and officials would need tailored protections. The protections that do matter for everyone, according to the letter, are: keeping your devices and apps updated; enabling multi-factor identity confirmation on sensitive accounts; starting to use passkeys, a new sign-in technology that is replacing passwords.
32. What is the main purpose of the experts’ open letter?
A. To warn of digital threats.
B. To correct wrong ideas about online risks.
C. To advise against using the public network.
D. To introduce advanced security technology.
33. What do experts say about public WiFi today?
A. It should be avoided by all means.
B. It is safe for sending important messages.
C. Serious attacks through it are very uncommon.
D. Its risks have increased due to modern technology.
34. What is considered really important for online safety?
A. Changing passwords very often. B. Turning off all wireless functions.
C. Updating software and using passkeys. D. Following the advice for high-risk groups.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Public WiFi: A Common Danger
B. How to Protect Our Data in Public?
C. Are Some Common Online Fears Myths?
D. Security: A Top Priority in the Digital Age

This morning, I asked Mom to take me to the pool. But she reminded me I’d watch kids for her as she got a job interview at the radio station. Still, I asked, “Couldn’t Julie watch them instead?”
“She can help, Jess, but she’s only ten. I’ll feel better with a fifteen-year-old in charge, honey.” Mom gave me a hug and off she went.
So there I was, stuck watching my five year-old sister Lyssa and three-year-old brother Dougie. I usually don’t mind watching the kids, but the problem was our little rented trailer house(拖车房屋). It’s like living in a barbecue cooker in hot days. Well, as is said, “What is, is.” and I decided to make the best of it.
We moved out into the front yard and I filled a paddling pool for the kids. I noticed that the sky looked a little strange — greenish-yellow, with gray clouds rising for miles — but I didn’t think anything of it. As kids jumped in the pool, I settled down to read my magazine. I put on headphones and turned the volume up loud enough to block out their noise. Before long I got lost in a cool story.
I was almost at the end when Julie came over to me, dropping water on my article. I took my headphones off, “Hey, what’s wrong with you? ” She pointed upwards. That’s when I saw the sky and about fell off my chair. Not only had the clouds moved toward us, they were swirling(打旋). I hadn’t realized how much the wind had picked up. A huge, gray-black funnel(漏斗)snaked down from the sky to the ground—a real, live tornado! And it headed our way at a high speed!
Though I had learned about tornado safety, at that moment, the only thing I could remember was that a tornado develops fast and that trailer houses are the worst place to take shelter. I tried hard to remember other safety tips. Get low. Yeah. If you’re caught outside, find the lowest spot. Scanning around, my eye stopped on a line of bushes.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
There was a ditch(沟渠)there for shelter, a hundred yards off.

M: Absolutely. A study published in Child Development found that children who regularly take on household responsibilities are more likely to be ambitious and independent adults.
W: That makes sense, but how do I get them to do chores without constant arguing?
M: The key is to match tasks to the child’s age. For younger kids, start with small jobs — like having a 2 or 3-year-old put away toys. Around 10 or 11, they can handle changing bedsheets.
W: And how do I keep them motivated?
M: Start by making chores fun, turning them into a game. Also, praise their effort — a star chart can work well. But most importantly, and this is often overlooked. Be the example you want your children to follow.

B 22. C 23. A

A 25. B 26. D 27. C
根据第二段“In a study, scientists identified a surprisingly simple strategy: using a nitrogen fertilizer-based (NFB, 基于氮肥的) method to help control the pests. Nitrogen is the main building block of proteins.( 在一项研究中,科学家们发现了一种出人意料的简单策略:采用基于氮肥的方法来控制这些害虫。氮是蛋白质的主要构成成分。)”以及第三段中“A high-carbohydrate diet is the key to locust swarming, as locusts rely on it to build up fat reserves that fuel population growth and long-distance migration. In contrast, high-protein, low-carb (碳水化合物) crops are far less appealing to the species, so planting such crops could help prevent swarming.( 高碳水化合物的饮食是蝗虫集群的关键,因为蝗虫依靠这种饮食来积累脂肪储备,以支持种群的增长和长距离迁徙。相比之下,高蛋白、低碳水化合物的作物对这种物种的吸引力要小得多,因此种植这类作物有助于防止蝗虫集群现象的发生。)”可知,科学家通过施用氮肥让作物变成高蛋白、低碳水,而蝗虫依赖高碳水饮食群聚繁殖,这种作物对它们毫无吸引力。本质是改变蝗虫的食物供应来抑制群聚。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Each farmer grew a grain called millet in two plots: one treated with commercial nitrogen fertilizer and the other untreated. The scientists then surveyed the fields for pest populations and crop damage three times throughout the growing season. They found that the fertilizer treatment significantly decreased pest populations and crop damage, while increasing millet yield.( 每位农民在两个地块种植一种叫做小米的谷物:一个地块使用商业氮肥处理,另一个地块未使用氮肥。然后,科学家在整个生长季节对这些田地进行了三次调查,以监测害虫数量和作物受损情况。他们发现,施肥处理显著降低了害虫数量和作物受损程度,同时提高了小米的产量。)”可知,第四段完整呈现了塞内加尔的田间对照试验过程与结果:施氮肥的地块害虫数量、作物损害显著减少,同时产量提升。其核心作用是用实证数据证明氮肥法防治蝗虫的有效性。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Daniel Gebregiorgis, a climate scientist at the Department of Geosciences, Georgia State University, says that while the method for locust management is a promising solution, its widespread use may be challenging because outbreaks often occur in remote areas.( 佐治亚州立大学地球科学系的气候科学家丹尼尔·格贝雷吉奥西斯表示,虽然这种蝗虫管理方法是一个很有前景的解决方案,但其广泛应用可能会面临挑战,因为蝗灾往往发生在偏远地区。)”
根据文章大意以及最后一段中“Because of global warming, many regions receive above-average rainfall. Coupled with rising temperatures and wetter soil, conditions for locust reproduction are increasingly met. Increasing storm activity makes this climate shift the key factor behind locust outbreaks.( 由于全球变暖,许多地区降雨量超过平均水平。再加上气温上升和更湿润的土壤,蝗虫繁殖的条件越来越具备。风暴活动的增加使这种气候变化成为蝗灾爆发的关键因素。)”可知,作者核心观点:人为导致的气候变化是蝗虫爆发增多的主要驱动力。全球变暖带来的异常降雨、升温、土壤湿润,为蝗虫繁殖创造了完美条件。
C
A 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第三段中“Kelly’s quest for inbox zero took time away from big-picture thinking , and her tendency to wait until she was absolutely sure before speaking (凯利执着于清空收件箱,这占用了她进行宏观思考的时间;而且她总习惯等到完全有把握才开口发言)”可知,凯莉过去的工作优势(如追求收件箱清零、说话前力求绝对确定)反而阻碍了她的宏观思考。故选A。
根据第三段中“Kelly’s quest for inbox zero took time away from big-picture thinking, and her tendency to wait until she was absolutely sure before speaking — once an asset — now worked against her. (凯利执着于清空收件箱,这占用了她进行宏观思考的时间;而且她总习惯等到完全有把握才开口发言——曾是一项asset——如今反倒对她不利)”可知,这种倾向曾经对她有利,是一种有价值的特质,但现在反而对她不利。因此asset在此意为“有价值的特性”。故选D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“You can intentionally try on new behaviors that better align with the roles you desire. (你可以有意识地尝试新的行为方式,使其更符合你向往的职位要求)”可知,作者认为人们可以有意识地调整行为,行为适应是可以实现的。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“But in many cases, missed opportunities have less to do with competence and more to do with how your personality patterns are showing up on the job. (但在很多情况下,错失机会与能力的关系并不大,更多是源于你在职场中展现出的性格模式)”可知,文章开头指出职场困境常与性格模式有关,接着用凯莉的例子说明性格与职位要求不匹配会影响晋升,最后强调性格可以主动调整。文章主要围绕职业发展中性格特点带来的影响展开,B选项“Personality in Career Advancement (职业晋升中的性格)”最适合作为文章标题。故选B。
D

It’s easy to give in to the winter hibernation (冬眠) urge — but countless studies have shown that outdoors activity is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of anxiety, depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). ____36____ Here’s how to make the best use of our natural health service.
Starting small.
“Sometimes getting out and running 5km was like climbing Everest. It would take me all day just to find the energy to get out,” says Alex Staniforth, a mental health campaigner. ____37____ Try opening a window, sitting by natural light, or bringing nature indoors with plants. When you’re ready, aim for short, achievable goals like a five-minute walk. You don’t need hours. Aiming for regular activity is key.
____38____
Mental health and fitness coach Gareth Jones emphasized that good planning and structure are crucial. “If you know you’re struggling with motivation, laying out all your kit — from your socks all the way up to the food you’re going to take — can be helpful,” he says. “____39____ You might want to get out when you get to the front door — but if you have to go and search for your trainers because they’re lost under the stairs somewhere, you may not feel like going out at all.”
Group support.
Social commitments can also act as motivation for people with depression and anxiety. Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help. ____40____ “People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth. “It doesn’t matter where people are now in their lives, they’ve had to work to get there. And you’ll get there too.”

It would take me all day just to find the energy to get out,” says Alex Staniforth, a mental health campaigner.( “有时候出去跑 5 公里就像攀登珠穆朗玛峰。 G选项“If this sounds familiar, remember even small steps can bring benefits.( 如果这听起来很熟悉,请记住即使是小的行动也能带来好处。)”
下文“Mental health and fitness coach Gareth Jones emphasized that good planning and structure are crucial.( 心理健康和健身教练加雷斯·琼斯强调,良好的规划和结构至关重要。)”

上文“Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help.( 身边有其他人的陪伴——无论是加入一个俱乐部还是与朋友一起参与某项活动——真的很有帮助。)” 下文““People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth.( “人们会在社交媒体上迅速晒出自己的成就,但你看不到的是背后的积累过程,”加雷斯说)”引用加雷斯的话,指出社交媒体上展示的只是别人的成就,看不到背后的付出,不要盲目比较。C 选项“However, don’t compare yourself to others.( 但是,不要拿自己和他人作比较。)”

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
There was a ditch(沟渠)there for shelter, a hundred yards off.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But in a couple of minutes, the tornado was over.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 There was a ditch (沟渠) there for shelter, a hundred yards off. I quickly gathered the kids, yelling, “Run to the ditch! As fast as you can!” The wind howled, and debris flew everywhere. Julie held Dougie’s hand tightly, and I grabbed Lyssa. We ran with all our might. The force of the wind pushed against us, making each step a struggle. When we reached the ditch, we huddled together. I covered the kids with my body, praying the tornado would pass. The noise was deafening, like a thousand trains roaring. I could feel the ground shaking beneath us.
But in a couple of minutes, the tornado was over. The howling wind gradually died down, and the debris stopped flying. I slowly lifted my head and looked around. The world seemed a bit surreal. Trees were uprooted, and parts of the trailer were scattered. We climbed out of the ditch. The kids were shaken but unhurt. I felt a huge sense of relief wash over me. As we made our way back to the damaged trailer, I knew we were lucky to be alive. And I was proud of us for handling the terrifying situation so bravely.
