Old and historical cinemas are all around us and yet so unnoticed. A new photobook uncovers their often-overlooked beauty.
Loew’s Palace Theatre
Originally opened as the Poli’s Palace Theatre in 1922 by architect Thomas W. Lamb, it was one of a double theatre complex along with the neighbouring Poli’s Majestic Theatre. In 1934, both theatres were taken over by Loew’s and operated as film theatres. In the late 1970s, an attempt to turn the building into a Christian Revival Centre never succeeded. The theatre is presently vacant and awaiting restoration.

Originally founded as the Philadelphia Opera House in 1908, it was designed by local architect William H. McElfatrick, who was in charge of the design of 40 theatres in his career. The Philadelphia Opera House was designed for opera manager Oscar Hammerstein as his sixth opera house. In 1910, it was sold to the Metropolitan Opera of New York City and was renamed the Met. Through the 1920s, it showed silent films in addition to hosting various opera companies. In the late 1930s, it became a ballroom, and in the 1940s a sports area for basketball, wrestling, and boxing events. It finally closed in 1954 and was turned into a church.
Robin’s Theatre
Opened in 1923, it had 1,500 seats, and was designed by architects I. J. Goldston and Detroit-based C. Howard Crane. It was operated by The Robins Theatre Enterprises Co., a local company founded by Daniel Robins, who was an early partner of Albert Warner of Warner Bros. It closed in 1974 and was vacant until 2018, when it was renovated and reopened as a multipurpose venue in 2020.

Last year, Brazilian cyclist Marcos Santos was at the best time of his career (事业). He had just won a major regional race and was eyeing the national championships. But a motorcycle accident changed everything. The 24-year-old almost lost his left leg, leaving him unable to walk, let alone ride a bike. Doctors said his cycling career might have to come to an end.
Marcos, who was studying sports science at the University of São Paulo, was heartbroken. For the first several days, he lay in the hospital bed and thought about how to deal with the rest of his life. In the end, he chose not to give in. There were days when pain made training unbearable, and self-doubt threatened to beat him. But he pushed through, inspired by his love for the sport.
Coach Oliveira, who had trained Marcos for years, was amazed by his performance. “Marcos proves that if you have the courage to keep going, nothing is impossible,” he stated.
This year, Marcos made a remarkable comeback at the South American Adaptive Cycling Championships. C
The pleasure people get from a piece of music has been linked to its effects on our emotional responses and ability to form social connections. The degree of enjoyment differs from person to person, but little is known about why. To see if genetics (遗传学) can account for it, Giacomo Bignardi at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands and his colleagues conducted a new study.
The researchers looked at more than 9,000 twins from the Swedish Twin Registry. About 3,400 were identical (同卵的) and 5,600 non-identical. The former share the same genome (基因组), while non-identical twins share only half their genomes, which enabled the researchers to determine the effects of genes through comparison. Besides, all the twins in the study were raised in the same households and so grew up with similar environmental influences. This made it easier to sort out genetic contributions.
The researchers got the twins to complete the Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire, which focused on how much pleasure they get from music. For example, they were asked the extent to which they agreed with statements such as “when I share music with someone I feel a special connection with that person” and “in my free time I hardly listen to music”. The result showed that genes seem to play a significant role in influencing how much pleasure music brings, with the identical twins being more than twice as similar in this feature as the non-identical ones.
“While it’s fairly understandable that musical ability might have a genetic basis, which provides an easy explanation for why some people seem to have a talent for music, it’s obscure that the degree of pleasure from listening to music is influenced by genes, so it is inspiring that the study finds this effect,” says Peter Harrison at the University of Cambridge.
However, Nick Collins at Durham University, UK thinks differently. “Certain musical abilities and preferences may be influenced by genetics, but there are a large number of cultural elements in music development that are not addressed by genetics alone,” he says.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. How twins contribute to the progress of genetic research.
B. Why the researchers chose the twins as research subjects.
C. What makes the new study different from previous ones.
D. What inspired the researchers to conduct the new study.
29. What is the finding of the new study?
A. The secret of musical talent lies in our genes.
B. Our genes determine what kind of music we like.
C. Our genes can influence how much we enjoy music.
D. The pleasure that different people get from music varies greatly.
30. Which can best replace the underlined word “obscure” in paragraph 4?
A. easy to conclude. B. reasonable to assume.
C. impossible to prove. D. difficult to see.
31. What is Nick Collins’ attitude towards the research finding?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
B 29. C 30. D 31. B

根据第二段“The researchers looked at more than 9,000 twins from the Swedish Twin Registry. This made it easier to sort out genetic contributions.(研究人员观察了瑞典双胞胎登记处的9000多名双胞胎。
根据第三段“The result showed that genes seem to play a significant role in influencing how much pleasure music brings, with the identical twins being more than twice as similar in this feature as the non-identical ones.(结果表明,基因似乎在影响音乐带来的快乐程度方面发挥着重要作用,同卵双胞胎在这一特征上的相似性是非同卵双胞胎的两倍多。)”
根据划线词上文“While it’s fairly understandable that musical ability might have a genetic basis, which provides an easy explanation for why some people seem to have a talent for music.(虽然音乐能力可能有遗传基础是相当容易理解的,这为为什么有些人似乎有音乐天赋提供了一个简单的解释。)可知,“obscure”所在的部分与上文是转折关系,上文说音乐能力有遗传基础是容易理解的,那么可推测出“obscure”的意思应该是“不容易看出”或“难以察觉”。故选D。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Certain musical abilities and preferences may be influenced by genetics, but there are a large number of cultural elements in music development that are not addressed by genetics alone.(某些音乐能力和偏好可能受到遗传学的影响,但在音乐发展中存在大量文化元素,这些元素并非仅由遗传学所能解释。)”
D
As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push to make them genderless. “People are stereotyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered objects in very traditional ways,” says Ashley Martin, a Stanford associate professor of organizational behavior. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this. Yet as Martin has found in her work, gender is one of the fundamental ways people form connections with objects, particularly those designed with human characteristics.
In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self-driving car known as “Miuu.” It was found that gender increased users’ feelings of attachment to these devices and their interest in purchasing them. For example, participants said they would be less likely to buy a genderless voice assistant than versions with male or female voices.
While gendering a product may be good marketing, it may also strengthen outdated or harmful ideas about power and identity. The stereotypes commonly associated with men, such as competitiveness and dominance, are more valued than those associated with women. These qualities, in turn, are mapped onto products that have been assigned a gender.
Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object’s name was meant to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a “he” or “she.”
Martin sees a silver lining, however: She believes that anthropomorphism (拟人化) “provides an opportunity to change stereotypes.” When women are put into positions of leadership like running companies, it reduces negative stereotypes about women. Similarly, anthropomorphized products could be created to take on stereotype-inconsistent roles — a male robot that assists with nursing or a female robot that helps do calculations, for instance.
32. What is the purpose of making new technologies genderless?
A. To reduce stereotypes. B. To meet public demand.
C. To cut production costs. D. To encourage competition.
33. What were the participants probably asked to do in the study?
A. Design a product. B. Respond to a survey.
C. Work as assistants. D. Take a language test.
34. Why is it difficult to create genderless objects?
A. They cannot be mass-produced. B. Naming them is a challenging task.
C. People assume they are unreliable. D. Gender is rooted in people’s mind.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The quality of genderless products. B. The upside of gendering a product.
C. The meaning of anthropomorphism. D. The stereotypes of men and women.
A 33. B 34. D 35. B
根据第一段中“‘People are stereotyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered objects in very traditional ways,’ says Ashley Martin, a Stanford associate professor of organizational behavior. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this. (斯坦福大学组织行为学副教授阿什利·马丁说:“人们以非常传统的方式对有性别的物品形成刻板印象。”完全去除物品的性别似乎是解决这个问题的简单方法)”可知,人们对有性别的物品存在刻板印象,让新技术无性别化的目的是减少这种刻板印象。故选A项。
根据第二段中“In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self driving car known as ‘Miuu.’ (在她的研究中,马丁让参与者对数字语音助手和名为‘Miuu’的自动驾驶汽车的男性、女性和无性别版本的喜爱程度进行评分)”可知,参与者被要求对不同版本的产品进行评价,这类似于对调查做出回应。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult.
Metropolitan Opera House

With the support of his family and coaches, he began a long and hard process. Every day, he received physical treatment, relearning basic movements. “It was the darkest time of my life,” he said.
Slowly, Marcos made progress. He found adaptive cycling, which uses specially designed bikes for disabled (残疾的) athletes. With a newfound hope, he combined his study with intense training on his adapted bike. His professors encouraged him, providing flexible study schedules so he could focus on recovery and training.
Though he didn’t win, his presence on track was a victory in itself. “I’m hack the bike, that’s all that matter. If my story can give hope to others facing similar problems, that would mean everything,” Marcos shared.
24. What happened to Marcos last year?
A. He suffered serious leg injuries.
B. He took a totally different career path.
C. He performed worse than expected.
D. He won the national cycling championship.
25. How did Marcos originally react to his injury?
A. He decided to give up cycling.
B. He turned to his family and coaches.
C. He was at a loss what to do.
D. He immediately started training again.
26. Why did Marcos return to competitive cycling?
A. To become a cycling coach.
B. To prove an athlete should aim high.
C. To test the limits of adaptive cycling technology.
D. To inspire others to face their challenges bravely.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Marcos?
A. Creative and confident. B. Energetic and careful.
C. Patient and humorous. D. Responsible and determined.
