Enjoy the challenges of a new term
The new term is finally here, which means, of course, it’s time to return to school.
For many students across China, that also means having to leave home for the next several months and move into a school dormitory.
Being away from our family for a long time, however, often leads to homesickness, a feeling that most students have experienced at some point.
A study by the UK’s National Union of Students found that up to 70 percent of UK students living away from home experience homesickness within their first few weeks of being away.
But homesickness isn’t just a feeling of sadness that happens in our mind; it can also affect us physically.
“You feel homesick in your stomach—it’s an unease in which you feel uncomfortable, nervous, stressed because you’re in a place or situation that’s not familiar,” Joshua Klapow, a professor of public heath at the University of Alabama, USA, told Huff Post.
According to Klapow, the body reacts physically when it’s placed in an unknown situation such as being separated from one’s familiar surroundings for a long time.
“It’s an evolutionary(进化的) thing that makes us protect ourselves from danger when something is unknown,” he told the HuffPost.
“When we think about home, we know that the sense of unknown … is not happening there, so we want to return.”
So, how can we overcome these physical reactions?
Ruth Hardy of the Guardian offered advice for students who are feeling the effects of being away from the safety of home.
“Try and establish routines (常规) quickly. This can make your new environment feel more stable and will hopefully make you feel more settled,” she wrote.
Making friends with others who are in your situation is also a great way to feel less homesick, according to Hardy.
The most important thing to remember, however, is that homesickness is completely normal and is nothing to be ashamed of.
And once it’s gone, you’re free to enjoy the adventures and challenges of a brand-new school year.

B
My son was entering senior high school. He was a bit anxious because he knew his best friend would not be in his new class. I explained to him that even though his best friend would not be in his class, he would still have some of his old classmates from junior high school.
On the first day of school when the class list was posted, I was shocked! My son, had zero former classmates in his class. None. Not one.
How could this happen?
I asked my friend who works for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. She explained, “Many highly populated schools often shuffle(改组)the kids to encourage new friendships—they design it as a strategy.” If schools are actively trying to place two best friends in different classes simply to shake things up, I think it is a blunder.
I was lucky enough to attend the same primary school all the way through. I was in a small class and our group of students moved through each grade together. We felt like brothers and sisters. It was wonderful.
While it may be good to shake things up a bit in the older grades, it seems almost cruel(残忍的) to separate good friends in the younger grades without good cause.
One mom named Karen says that her son is always starting a new grade without any close friends. At first, she thought it was a good idea. Then she realized one thing—her son does not have a “best friend”, which makes her a bit frightened. In fact, she thinks that he does not have any close friends because his classmates are always changing.
Part of a school’s responsibility is to provide safe and comfortable space for children to learn and grow. If that environment is always changing—causing terrible results—perhaps it is time to rethink this practice.

B.To discuss the importance of good friends.
C.To explain how friendships are developed at school.
D.To show the advantage of having familiar classmates.
8. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Concerns for Senior High Students

In an online class, developing healthy patterns of communication with professors is very important. 9 While I have only listed two of each, there are obviously many other situations that can arise. Students should be able to extend the logic (逻辑) of each to their particular circumstance.
Do’s
• 10 Questions about subject content are generally welcomed. Before asking questions about the course design, read the syllabus (教学大纲) and learning management system information to be sure the answer isn’t hiding in plain sight.
• Participate in discussion forums (论坛), blogs and other open-ended forums for dialogue. 11 Be sure to stay on topic and not offer irrelevant information. Make a point, and make it safe for others to do the same.
Don’ts
• Don’t share personal information or stories. Professors are not trained nurses, financial aid experts or your best friends. If you are in need of a deadline extension, simply explain the situation to the professor. 12
• Don’t openly express annoyance at a professor or class. 13 When a student attacks a professor on the social media, the language used actually says more about the student. If there is truly a concern about a professor’s professionalism or ability, be sure to use online course evaluations to calmly offer your comments.
A. That’s what they are for.
B. Turn to an online instructor for help.
C. If more information is needed, they will ask.
D. Remember that online professors get a lot of emails.
E. Below are some common do’s and don’ts for online learners.
F. Everyone has taken a not-so-great class at one time or another.
G. Ask questions, but make sure they are good, thoughtful questions.

Dear John,
I am Lihua, a senior high school student. I’m sorry to hear that loneliness prevails in your school life. Now I’d like to offer you some suggestions.
In order to adjust to the new surroundings, you can take an active part in class and after-school activities, which can help you communicate with your classmates. I think it would be more beneficial if you could share what you are really good at. It’s easier to make friends when you have similar interests. Besides what are mentioned above, it’s necessary to smile to others and you are sure to get a smile in return.
I will be glad if you find my suggestions useful. Hope you can make some good friends soon in China.
Best wishes!
Yours, Li Hua
