Make a periscope

Use mirror (镜子) power to see around objects

What you need

●2 drink boxes     ●scissors or a knife    ●tape (胶带)

●glue     ●2 small mirrors

People started using periscopes in submarines (潜艇) in the 19th century to make it possible to see above the water. Light enters the top opening, and when it hits the first mirror, it’s reflected (反射) at a 90° angle (角度) down through the periscope. At the bottom, light hits the second mirror, and it is reflected a second time out of the periscope and into the user’s eye. Periscopes can also be used to look over at objects or around corners.

How to make it

1. Cut the top end off both of the drink boxes.

2. Place the open ends of the boxes so that they face each other, and join them together using strong tape.

3. Follow the shape of a mirror at one end of the long box and cut out a square hole. Then repeat at the other end of the box, on the opposite side.

4. Use glue to fix the mirrors inside the long box at a 45° angle. They should face each other.

★Make small changes to the positions of the mirrors until you can see a clear picture in the lower one.
