My reason for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish: I could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had been addicted to this cassette (磁带) on our previous summer’s road trip.
As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book — Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem, I thought. So I put Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and fought in their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen.
We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip. I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复) electricity after a storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with rubbish washed up by the storm. When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip. He answered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.”
Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I’m beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.
24.Why did the author start reading in the car?
A.She wanted to have a better journey.
B.She wanted to keep a family tradition.
C.Her children were addicted to reading.
D.Her children were tired of the cassette.
25.How did the children react after the author read a few lines?
A.They kept fighting. B.They repeated the rhythm.
C.They soon became quiet. D.They read together aloud.
26.What can we learn about the author’s family trip to the beach?
A.The family were caught in a storm.
B.The kids enjoyed Mom’s reading on the road.
C.The family had a good time on the beach.
D.The kids thought time had passed too quickly.
27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Better Traveling than Reading
B.Books that Changed My Children
C.Road Trips Full of Challenges
D.Reading Makes Great Road Trips

I learnt an important lesson from one of my patients. When I first met Linda, she was only six years old, beautiful and energetic. She had an accident when she fell into the fire on a camping trip, leaving30%of her skin surface damaged.
Linda would require several weeks in the hospital and three additional surgeries. Between each operation, nurses daily took her for disinfection (消毒).
Overnight, the dressings (敷料) would stick to the wound and have to be pulled away. Each step was more painful for Linda than the previous one. For an adult, the agonizing (折磨人的) pain and daily fear prove overwhelming. For a child, it has an impact forever. Linda’s life would never be the same.
I took care of Linda for the next several years, treating her scars and freeing areas of tightness in her face and neck. Over that time, her scars faded and her appearance improved significantly. Eventually, her family moved away and I lost track of her.
Years later, at a national meeting, I ran into a plastic surgeon I knew who told me he had met a former patient of mine. It was Linda. She was doing extremely well and she was his colleague and not his patient. Linda had become a nurse and worked with him in a burn unit.
She was the nurse the patients most often asked to clean their wounds and change their dressings. Her compassion (同情心) and her courage in returning to a burn unit inspired their confidence and reduced their fears. Linda turned her pain into compassion. She devoted every day of her life towards helping others overcome their pain.
Physicians can be frustrated and overwhelmed when we don’t have enough time in a day to complete everything we need to do. Linda taught me the importance of slowing down. Among the best gifts we, as physicians, can give our patients, whether in the exam room or at the bedside in the hospital, is to take the time to show the compassion we feel.
28.Which of the following words can best describe Linda according to the story?
A.Outspoken. B.Well-behaved. C.Painful. D.Strong-minded.
29.What step could cause unbearable pain for Linda?
A.Pulling away the dressings. B.Going through disinfection.
C.Treating the scars. D.Freeing the areas of tightness.
30.What can help doctors reduce their patients’ fears according to the passage?
A.Experience. B.Patience. C.Compassion. D.Friendliness.
31.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Linda was thankful for the author’s compassion.
B.Linda was mostly trusted by her colleagues.
C.Linda’s experience led her to be a nurse.
D.Gifts make patients confident in operations.

Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body, say experts in children’s nutrition. And taking in those morning calories are worth it, even for people concerned about their weight, a new study finds. Middle-school students who ate breakfast were more likely to have healthy weights than those who skipped breakfast. This was true even for students who ate two breakfasts-one at home and one at school.
“Not skipping breakfast sets you up to not overeat later in the day,” concludes Marlene Schwartz. This psychologist studies obesity (肥胖) and directs the Rudd Center for Obesity & Food Policy at the University of Connecticut in Hartford.
Breakfast is considered so important that many schools now serve it as well as lunch. But at least one study has found that a lot of these kids who take part can end up eating two breakfasts, Schwartz says. People became concerned that kids who ate breakfast at home and at school might become obese.
In fact, Schwartz now says, that's not what her data have turned up.
Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools—in fifth, sixth and seventh grades -were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34 to 44 percent of all students said they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17 percent, or almost one in every six kids, regularly ate breakfast at school. On the whole, about one in every 10 kids reported downing breakfasts both at home and at school.
Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For instance, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade,22 percent of the studied kids skipped breakfast frequently.
Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight.
32.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Breakfast is more important to your brain.
B.Eating two breakfasts is better than eating one.
C.Eating breakfast mightn’t cause kids to gain weight.
D.People concerned about their weight should skip breakfast.
33.What’s the possible result of skipping breakfast according to the passage?
A.Being more popular. B.Putting on weight. C.Becoming thinner. D.Being sick.
34.What can we learn about Schwartz’s study?
A.It took her four years to finish her study.
B.Eating habits remained the same as the kids got older.
C.Three different grades’ students took part in her study.
D.The number of students who ate breakfast at home was smaller.
35.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Breakfast is more important than lunch.
B.Eating habits should change as the kids grow.
C.Kids who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight.
D.It is important to develop a good habit of eating two breakfasts.

The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!”
Our house was situated just a stone’s throw away from theirs, separated by a stretch of land covered in the most vibrant rosebushes. The rosebushes served as a fence between our house and theirs. I was eleven at the time and the oldest of six active girls. Despite the warnings, my sisters and I would often find ourselves drawn to the allure of mischief. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, far from the reach of Jack and Ruby’s watchful eyes, but we secretly delighted in annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose.
The day of the incident was like any other, filled with the laughter and energy of youth. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose emerged. Her voice, usually reserved, now echoed through the yard, laden with pain and fury, “Look at what you’ve done to our roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!”
Scared to death, my sisters and I quickly ran back into our house. Breathlessly, I told Mom what had happened. Mom responded with a mixture of anger and disappointment, “Girls, how many times have I told you not to play softball near those bushes? Come and help me fix them right now, ” she commanded. “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple, we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom rushed out of the house without saying a word. Out we rushed immediately to follow her to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked closer. She looked sad. There is only one restaurant in the village, and it’s been serving delicious food and drinks for more than two centuries! If you look closely, you may be able to tell what makes this village different. Do you see how all the houses are much higher than we might expect? That’s because Hilden is home to some of the tallest people in all of England! Both men and women are about 25% taller than most others, and the tallest man in the village right now is seven and a half feet tall! That’s taller than most NBA players! No one is sure why everyone in Hilden is so tall, but we’re going to find out. Stay with us, won’t you? This is going to be interesting...

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.B 27.D
故选A。
根据第二段中的“But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen.(但读了几行之后,孩子们被文字的韵律吸引,开始认真倾听)”可知,作者读了几行后,孩子们开始倾听,也就是很快安静了下来。故选C。
根据第三段中的“When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip.(当我们回到家后,我问儿子这次旅行中他最喜欢的是什么)”以及作者儿子的回答“The book you read in the car.(你在车里读的那本书)”可推知,孩子们十分享受母亲在路途中的朗读时光。故选B。
根据最后一段“Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I’m beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.(如今孩子们已是青少年,公路旅行仍有挑战,但我们依旧在周游全国的旅途中坚持朗读。我渐渐发现,大声朗读不仅仅是帮我们打发时间,至少在那段时光里,我们没有沉浸在各自的电子世界中,而且或许我们还开启了一项能传承给下一代的美好传统)”可知,旅行时车内朗读这一做法打破了家人间的电子隔阂,成为能传承的珍贵家庭传统。D项表示“阅读让公路旅行变得精彩”,既概括了阅读与公路旅行的核心关联,又体现出阅读为旅途带来的美好改变,能作为本文的标题。故选D。
C
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 31.C
根据文章第三段“Overnight, the dressings (敷料) would stick to the wound and have to be pulled away. Each step was more painful for Linda than the previous one. For an adult, the agonizing (折磨人的) pain and daily fear prove overwhelming. For a child, it has an impact forever. Linda’s life would never be the same.
根据文章第三段中的“Overnight, the dressings (敷料) would stick to the wound and have to be pulled away. Each step was more painful for Linda than the previous one.(一夜之间,敷料就会粘在伤口上,必须把它拿开。琳达每走一步都比前一步更痛苦。)”可知,用来保护伤口的敷料在夜里会粘在伤口上,揭开敷料的过程对琳达来说十分痛苦,故去掉敷料可能会导致无法忍受的疼痛。故选A。
根据文章最后一段中的“Among the best gifts we, as physicians, can give our patients...is to take the time to show the compassion we feel.(作为医生,我们能给病人最好的礼物之一,无论是在检查室还是在医院的床边,就是花时间表达我们的同情。)”及倒数第二段中的“Her compassion (同情心) and her courage in returning to a burn unit inspired their confidence and reduced their fears.(她的同情和回到烧伤病房的勇气鼓舞了他们的信心,减少了他们的恐惧。)”

根据第一段第二句话“And taking in those morning calories are worth it, even for people concerned about their weight, a new study finds. Middle-school students who ate breakfast were more likely to have healthy weights than those who skipped breakfast.(一项新的研究发现,即使对那些关心自己体重的人来说,早晨摄入这些卡路里也是有必要的。吃早餐的中学生比不吃早餐的中学生更有可能拥有健康的体重。)”可知,关心体重的人也需要吃早餐,吃早餐的中学生比不吃早餐的中学生更有可能拥有健康的体重,由此推知,吃早餐可能不会导致孩子体重增加。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段第一句话“‘Not skipping breakfast sets you up to not overeat later in the day,’ concludes Marlene Schwartz. (玛琳·施瓦茨总结道:“不错过早餐会让你在一天中晚些时候不会吃得过多。”)”可推知,如果不吃早餐,晚些时候可能会吃的更多,从而导致肥胖。故选B。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段第二句话“Over three years, students from 12 different schools — in fifth, sixth and seventh grades — were asked about their breakfasts.

And it wasn’t her nose that was red-it was her eyes.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ruby walked over to my mother, we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said. “We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will fix them and help weed the roses. ” My sisters and I looked at each other in horror, but Ruby smiled through her tears. “I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees examining the damaged bushes together.
A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge.
