When 16-year-old Maya first moved to the small town of Willow Creek, she felt like an outsider. As an outgoing and passionate artist, she struggled to connect with her reserved classmates, who seemed more interested in scrolling through social media than discussing art. One rainy afternoon, while she was sketching in the park, she noticed an elderly man sitting on a bench, staring at a painting of a sunset.
“That’s incredible,” Maya said, approaching him. “Did you paint it?” The man smiled and nodded. “I’m Mr. Thompson,” he said. “I used to be an educationalist, but I’ve always loved art.” Maya spent the next hour talking to him about her work, and he gave her valuable feedback on her sketches.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
32.The passage begins with two questions to ________.
A.introduce the main topic B.show the author’s attitude
C.describe how to use the Internet D.explain how to store information
33.What can we learn about the first experiment?
A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
34.In transactive memory, people ________.
A.keep the information in mind
B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer
D.remember how to find the information
35.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?
A.We are using memory differently.
B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memories than before.
D.We need a better way to access information.

How to Make Friends
Friends are so wonderful because they bring laughter, share adventures and comfort you in hard times. 36 Fortunately, once you know where to look and how to put yourself out there, making new friends doesn’t have to be hard. Here are some tips and strategies for building the friendships you deserve.
37 If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. If you just sit alone, friends might come to you, but that’s not likely because they might think you want to stay alone. For example, if you’re still in school, sit somewhere with other people. It doesn’t have to be a crowded table, but try to choose one with at least 2 other people.
Join an organization or club to meet new people. 38 You don’t necessarily need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. Some of the most rewarding friendships are between 2 people who don’t have much in common at all.
Make eye contact and smile. If you don’t present a friendly and inviting appearance, people are less likely to be receptive to your friendship. 39
Be reliable. When you say you’ll do something, do it. 40 If you embody this quality in your treatment of others, it will attract others who appreciate reliability and who will be reliable in return.
A.Make yourself available.
B.Look for opportunities to talk to people.
C.Show the good, unique qualities about yourself.
D.Be someone that people know that they can depend on.
E.But sometimes making new friends can feel really hard.
F.This is a great way to find other people who have common interests.
G.Look people directly in the eye when they are speaking to you and offer them a warm, friendly smile.

M: No problem. I spent a large amount of money on it, and I must say I’m really disappointed.
W: Sir, are you sure you were using it according to the instructions?
M: Not really. Why ask?
W: Because the power-saving function is not automatic. You see, there’s a small button here. You need to press it to enable the power-saving function. Now, do you still insist on returning it or would you like to give it another try?

M: Dave Carter is my best friend. We met when we were five years old because our parents were friends and then we ended up going to the same school. He works in a different city now, so I only see him on weekends and holidays. We know each other really well. We laugh a lot together and we enjoy the same things: football, going to bars and so on. When I’m feeling down or when I need to talk to somebody, I can always call him. Recently, I had some trouble with my girlfriend and he was a big help— he’s a really good listener. He just let me speak my mind while he listened. But he isn’t perfect! He’s always late! The last time I saw him was last weekend. We arranged to meet at four o’clock to play football, and he arrived at half past six! It was nearly dark! Oh, well, nobody’s perfect, right? He’s still a really good friend.

When Sarah first moved to a new city for university, she felt completely alone. She had left her friends and family behind, and her shy nature made it hard to meet new people. Her only companion was her laptop.
One evening, feeling particularly lonely, she came across a live stream of a virtual concert. A small band was playing indie folk music, and the chat room was filled with people from around the world. Tentatively, Sarah typed a message: “This song is beautiful.” To her surprise, the singer read her comment aloud and thanked her.
That moment changed everything. Sarah began attending the band’s weekly live streams. She became a regular in the chat, making friends with other listeners. They created a fan community where they shared not only their love for the music but also their personal stories. For the first time since moving, Sarah felt like she belonged.

Over the next few weeks, Maya and Mr. Thompson became close friends. He taught her about the principles of color theory and encouraged her to participate in a local art competition. Maya was initially nervous, but with Mr. Thompson’s support, she submitted a painting of the town’s old bookstore.
When the results were announced, Maya won first place. She ran to Mr. Thompson’s house to share the news, only to find that he had been admitted to the hospital with the flu. “I’m so sorry I can’t be there to celebrate with you,” he said over the phone. “But I’m incredibly proud of you.” Maya left the hospital with tears in her eyes, grateful for the unlikely friendship that had changed her life.

【答案】32.A 33.C 34.D 35.A

If you just sit alone, friends might come to you, but that’s not likely because they might think you want to stay alone. For example, if you’re still in school, sit somewhere with other people. It doesn’t have to be a crowded table, but try to choose one with at least 2 other people.(如果你想交朋友,首先你得想办法主动去接触他人,以便结识新朋友。
