Solo travel,or traveling alone, wasn’t considered safe, ideal or fashionable for Indian women 25 years ago.But that didn’t stop Dr.Sudha Mahalingam. When she followed her husband on his work trips abroad, she used the opportunities to make her adventurous trips.
Two decades ago,Mahalingam quit her job in mainstream print journalism and switched careers to take up energy research.Soon after, she started receiving invitations to speak at international conferences in oil producing countries and the world of travel opened up to her.Today,at 70,she has visited 66 countries across six continents, which she shares on her blog Footloose Indian as well as in her book The Travel Gods Must Be Crazy.
Owing to a busy schedule of managing work and family,Mahalingam often had no time to organize her travel,so most of her early trips were sudden and unplanned. She landed in the Czech Republic without a valid(有效的) visa, faced the challenge of finding vegetarian food in China, got accidentally locked in a museum in Iran and was caught without proof of a yellow fever vaccination(疫苗接种) at the airport in Nairobi,Kenya.
Though Mahalingam sometimes travels with friends, most of her journeys are solo. Her most recent international adventure that stands out was her trip to Borneo in Southeast Asia.“There were crawlies(爬虫) everywhere and fallen leaves as high as one meter. You put your foot and won’t know if a snake would stick itself around your leg or whether a poisonous insect would bite you.It was pouring all the time.I have been to the Amazon rainforest as well but it was a cakewalk compared to Borneo,” she says.
Mahalingam has been addicted to different adventure sports too, including diving and hang-gliding.She also made a difficult journey to Everest Base Camp and,at the age of 66,went skydiving in Uluru,Australia.

A.To highlight the hardship of her Borneo trip.
B.To prove the wide extent of Mahalingam’s travels.
C.To emphasize the importance of the Amazon rainforest.
D.To tell the differences between Borneo and the Amazon Rainforest.
27.Which of the following best describes Mahalingam?
A.Creative. B.Courageous. C.Considerate. D.Demanding.

After meeting someone for the first time,do you see yourself as a humorous person who heats up the atmosphere?Or do you imagine all the ways you may have bored others? If you agree with the former description, you are in the minority. Many studies show the average people take a rather low opinion of their conversational abilities and the social impressions they leave when dealing with complicated interpersonal relationship. But on the contrary, chances are that we are often much more amiable than we think.
The mismatch(错配) between our thought of our social performance, and others’ opinions of us,is known as the “liking gap”.It may restrict our ability to form healthy relationships in our personal lives, and also get in the way of beneficial teamwork.Studies conducted by Erica Boothby and Gus Cooney psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania, show that the liking gap may simply arise from too much self reflection.“Too much self reflection causes terrible social experiences. We are so busy worrying about the impression we’ve given and analyzing every tiny thing that we might have said wrong, for example,a slip in tongue—that we don’t notice someone’s encouraging smile or the warmth in their eyes,” says Cooney.
“When you’re very young, you might just assume that if someone’s nice to me,then they actually feel that way about me,” says Boothby. But as we get older, however,we start to realize that people may cover up their annoyance or boredom.“There’s more uncertainty in relating someone’s actions to how they actually feel about you.” As a result,as adults,we second-guess others’ reactions.
A little self-awareness can,of course,be healthy.“It could make sense for me to call out some of my mistakes,so that I could correct them next time,” says Cooney. But many of us are far too pessimistic. And these judgement prevent us from connecting with people who may really appreciate us.So next time, don’t beat yourself up.Just walk up and have a lighthearted talk.
28.What does the underlined word “amiable” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Brilliant. B.Loose-tongued.
C.Tight-lipped. D.Likeable.
29.According to Cooney, what might too much self-reflection cause?
A.A terrible impression.
B.A reserved interaction.
C.Unnecessary self-criticism.
D.Unreal self-expectations.
30.What makes adults second-guess others’ reactions,according to Paragraph 3?
A.The fear of being misunderstood.
B.The awareness of social complexity.
C.The mismatch between promises and actions.
D.The differences between cultural backgrounds.
31.Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.Go easy on people around you.
B.Avoid unpleasant comments on others.
C.Stop underestimating your social skills.
D.Engage thoughtfully and respond appropriately.
D
Conversing with a friend just once during the day to catch up,joke around or tell them you’re thinking of them can increase your happiness and lower your stress level. These are among the results of a new study co-authored by University of Kansas professor Jeffrey Hall.
“This study was an attempt to define quality communication in the context of relationships,” Hall said.“The types of communication we chose to study were ones shown in past research to make people feel more bonded through conversation.” Over 900 study participants from five universities were directed to engage in one of the communication behaviors on a single day,and then reported back that night about their feelings and the quality of their day.
As it turned out,it didn’t matter which of these quality conversations someone had.The very act of intentionally reaching out to a friend in one of these ways was what mattered most.“There’s a lot of good research that says the number of interactions you have and the quality of interactions are both associated with being a less lonely, happier and more connected person,” said Hall. This study found that once is enough, but more is better.
The study also brought in Hall’s past research on different ways to connect in the era of social and mobile media. The study found high quality face-to-face communication was more closely associated with well-being than electronic or social media contact. The study also explained why quality communication makes people feel better. This supports the idea that we use communication to get our need to belong met, and,in doing so,it helps us manage our stress.
What is exciting about this research,Hall said,is that it shows there are a lot of good things that come along with just one good conversation with a friend. This drives home the point that making time for quality conversation makes our days better.
32.What is the new study mainly about?
A.Interpersonal skills. B.Communication behaviors.
C.Child development. D.Stress management.
33.What should be stressed in the interactions with friends according to the author?
A.The topic of communication. B.The purpose of communication.
C.The quality of communication. D.The form of communication.
34.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Our friends can provide emotional support for us.
B.The findings of past research on diverse ways to connect.
C.The good communication helps people benefit a lot.
D.The numerous advantages of face-to-face communication.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Negative Effects of Electronic Contact
B.Ways to Make Friends with Others
C.An Exciting Study on Stress Problems
D.The Power of Quality Communication

Networking online or in person involves talking to completely random strangers. But many of us don’t like talking to unfamiliar people. Why?We are always told not to talk to strangers. 36 It’s a good thing because we need to be aware of danger.
But the rule just doesn’t help when you’re trying to network as a grown-up. 37 I’m hoping this post will give you a few ideas.
Bear in mind that you are allowed to talk to strangers at networking events—in fact, you’re meant to.I like to think of it like being on a cruise ship where it’s almost impolite not to say hello to the passengers around you. 38 You are all there to meet and talk to each other. You are all strangers to each other. You are all there to make the best of the event.
So the first obstacle is your approach and it starts with looking around for someone to meet, making eye contact and then offering a smile.Smiling is the easiest thing to do,but so hard for so many people. However, when breaking the ice, smiling is all-important. 39 Test this for yourself;generally if you smile at people, they will smile back even if they don’t mean to.
40 This isn’t personal.Just say,“Have a nice day or evening and take care.” Let them go,and move forward.Exchange cards so you can connect with them later.Shake hands at the beginning or end of the interaction, depending on what feels natural.
A.People mirror smiles.
B.Offering instructions is my favorite opener.
C.As children, our parents drum that rule into our minds.
D.Smiling helps shorten the distance and build better relationships.
E.Remember, you have plenty in common with your fellow networkers.
F.So,how do you talk to strangers at an event when you’re there on your own?
G.Sometimes, you’ll come across people who may not be in the mood to converse.

第二节(满分25分)

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.
“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”
“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake not to invite Lucy to the party.”
“She never even talks to me!”
Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her to get to know everyone.”
“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!” Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!”
On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope(缰绳).
Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.
The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

W:I prefer tea to coffee, but whenever we visit Harry, he always gives us coffee.
M:I don’t like coffee, either. All I really want is a glass of cold water.
(Text 2)
W:Please drive a little faster.
M:Don’t you know I am a green hand? Besides, there is a policeman at the next crossroads.
(Text 3)
W:Hey, Andy, is there anything to eat? I’m starving.
M:No, I thought there was a frozen pizza, but it’s gone. Hmm, why don’t we get takeout?
(Text 4)
M:Mom, I’ve got a part-time job at a supermarket. Three hours a day weekdays and all day Saturday.
W:Congratulations, Tom. But are you sure you can handle it? What about your homework and your piano lessons?
(Text 5)
M:Did you rent that club for the party this April?
W:No, it was already booked through the end of next month. Maybe we can get it for the next party in August.
(Text 6)
M:Jenny, ⑥ I’m going to stop smoking.
W:Good for you, John. It has cost you a lot. But it is really difficult.
M:Yeah, that’s why I am telling you. My friends will laugh at me when I tell them. ⑥But I think you will help me.
W:Your parents ask you to stop it?
M:No.⑦ That’s because when I go running, I can hardly breathe.
W:I’ll help you. Whenever you want a cigarette, call me and I’ll take your mind off it.
M:Thanks, Jenny. I’ll do it.
(Text 7)
W:Dad, where are we going?
M:⑧First, we will go to the city centre and stop for something to drink. Then we will visit the University Museum.
W:Where are we going to have a drink?
M:There is a coffee shop round the corner. Can you see that big building at the end of the road?
W:Yeah. I can see it.
M:That is a bank. The coffee shop is opposite the bank.
W:Good. I will have hot chocolate.
MSamantha, stop! Wait for the lights to turn green. When crossing the road, you must always pay attention to what’s around you.

M:I can’t deny it. I would lose my head if it weren’t placed on my shoulders.
W:I’ll never forget the time you went fishing and forgot to take your fishing pole.
M:I won’t forget it either, but that’s not the most memorable example of my forgetfulness.
W:How about the time you started to leave without wearing any trousers?
M:No, that’s not it.

M:Wellthe day we were supposed to get married was such a beautiful day that I forgot all about the wedding and went fishing instead.

M:Don’t mention it. The rain is pouring down outside! I had to wait forty minutes to catch a taxi to work. When I got to the office, my pants were dirty. Luckily I always keep an extra pair here!
W:Ah, sorry to hear about your troubles! The weather in London is so different from that in the south of France! We have perfect weather here. A light wind is coming in through the windows of my hotel from the sea right now. I’m watching little boats pass by, and dolphins jumping in the water every morning. Today, there were at least ten of them playing together right outside my window! It’s so nice to be away from my computer.
M:OK. Enjoy your vacation. Thanks for calling me. It is really nice hearing your voice, but I really have to get some work done today.
(Text 10)
M:Hi, everyone. Are you familiar with the culture of afternoon tea? Let’s sum up a few things you need to know about this traditional English custom. While the tradition of drinking tea dates back to about 3,000 BCE in China, it was not until the middle 17th century that the concept of “afternoon tea” first appeared in the UK. In 1840, Anna Maria Russell, started asking for a tea tray with butter, bread and cakes at 4 pm every day, as she found she was hungry at this time and the evening meal was served late at 8 pm. Traditional afternoon tea, which is typically served between 4 pm and 6 pm, is technically a small meal, not a drink. It consists of a selection of sandwiches, fruit jam and cakes. Of course, tea or coffee, served with milk and sugar, is also provided. When you drink your tea, take small sips rather than “glugging” it down. Similarly, the food served should be eaten in a particular way as well. Sandwiches are eaten first, followed by the sweet snacks, such as cakes. If you take milk with your tea, pour the tea first and then add milk.

Dear teachers and students,
I think good friends should be honest. This is the best quality I want.
A good friend is like a mirror and lets you know what is happening. For instance, when I was upset that I got a low mark in the maths test, my best friend reminded me that I had spent too much time playing games on my phone instead of studying. Besides, I was lazy, never finishing my homework on time. At first I was angry, but then I realized that she wanted me to be serious about my study. If she didn’t tell me the truth, I would never realize the reason why I failed in maths.
Thank you for your listening!
第二节
Lucy’s present was the very last to be opened. Worrying that it would ruin the party, Madison grabbed the present reluctantly and ripped open the gift-wrap paper. Inside was a delicately hand-made lead rope! Shocked, she widened her eyes, covering her hands over her mouth. “It’s a lead rope for your horse Star. I made it by myself!” Madison pulled it out of the box and placed it on her lap, amazed at its beauty. Lucy added, “I heard you talking about your horse at school. That’s when I got the idea to make you a lead rope.”
Deeply moved by what she said, Madison held the lead rope tightly in her hands. It was, by far, her very favorite birthday present of the day. She suddenly felt so bad because she had been so mean to Lucy. With tears swirling in her eyes, she blinked hard to fight them back, feeling a mixture of regret and gratitude. “Thanks so much for this lead rope. I love it! Would you like to join us and be our friends?” Lucy nodded cheerfully. Madison put her arms around Lucy’s shoulders, both smiling. With applause and laughter echoing through the house, Lucy joined the other girls to enjoy the party.
