Not saying a word, Avonna walks towards the door. Her mom asks, “Where are you going?”
Avonna replies, “It’s none of your business.” “You promised to put away your clothes first; the clothes are still on your bed. Please finish that task before you leave,” her mom says. Avonna shouts, “They are my clothes; I can do what I want with them. You are too hard on me. I hate you!” She runs into her bedroom.
“You can neither go out nor watch TV today,” her mom shouts back.
This happens in different homes. Teenagers, just like adults, get angry generally when they don’t get their way. Many things can drive them mad. How should parents deal with their teenagers’ anger?
Parents should deal with their own anger properly in front of their children. What are some good ways to do that? They should tell themselves, “I’m getting angry. I will take a break.” or “I can’t talk to you right now; I’m really unhappy so I’m going to wait until I’m calm.”
Allow teenagers to express their anger. The best way to remove (去除) anger is to discuss it, find the reason, and see what changes can be made to correct it. When a kid is told to go to his room until he “is over with his anger”, the anger often comes out later.
When a fight happens, several things are easy to notice: Parents are often very tired and teens are very angry. Many angry kids choose to talk to another adult or a counselor (咨询师) rather than talk to their parents. Finding a wise person can help parents find a way to help the whole family learn to communicate better.

A. Keeping silent can help remove anger.
B. Parents should never get angry at home.

14. According to the material, to deal with a teen’s anger, _________.
A. parents can buy him or her a present B. parents can take him or her to the hospital

Now we can use many things to communicate. But how did people communicate in the past? Here are some interesting answers to this question.
Ancient Chinese people used poems to communicate. Many poets (诗人) would share their thoughts in their poems. So two poets would often become friends after reading each other’s poems.
There’s another way to send messages without making a sound or using words. This is called visual (视觉的) communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke (烟). A long time ago, soldiers (士兵) along the Great Wall of China used smoke to tell others about the war. When they found the enemy (敌人) from their watchtowers, they would start a smoky fire. If soldiers in other towers saw the smoke, they would also light fires. In this way, news of the enemy’s arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They often use a whistled (口哨的) language called El Silbo, which comes from the Spanish language. The sound of whistling can be heard from up to five kilometers away. El Silbo can carry all kinds of messages. El Silbo is used much less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it.
36. 请根据短文内容填空,每空一词。

Stories Behind Chinese Tastes
More than Food
Chinese food is not only about food—it also carries stories from China’s long history. From delicious main courses to desserts, each dish is like a storybook. There is a “tasty” tale behind its rich flavours and ingredients.
Let’s explore the origins of some famous Chinese dishes.
Dumplings as Medicine
Dumplings are one of China’s best-known foods. Their history goes back over 1800 years. One story says they were first used as medicine.
In the late Eastern Han Dynasty, many people were poor and often had frostbitten (冻伤的) ears in winter. A famous doctor Zhang Zhongjing wanted to help. On the Winter Solstice (冬至), he set up a tent and boiled mutton, Sichuan pepper and herbs in a big pot. Then he wrapped them in dough skins (面皮) shaped like ears. He gave them to people to eat, and their ears got better.
Today, dumplings are a kind of traditional food on the Winter Solstice and during the Spring Festival.
A Happy, Fishy Accident
Stinky mandarin fish (臭鳜鱼) is a famous dish from Anhui Province. One story says this dish came from an accident and innovation.
Long ago, merchants (商人) carried fish home from the Yangtze River. To keep the mandarin fish fresh, they used salt. However, when they got home, the fish didn’t smell fresh at all! One merchant’s wife didn’t want to waste the fish, so she cooked them using local cooking methods. To her surprise, the fish tasted soft and delicious.
The dish became popular because of its unique flavour. Also, “fish” sounds like “plenty” (余yú) in Chinese and “mandarin fish” sounds like “wealth” (贵 guì). So stinky mandarin fish brings the wish for “wealth and plenty”.
Cakes of Victory
The dingsheng cake is a popular snack in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. It is made with rice flour and comes with sweet fillings such as red bean paste.
When Yue Fei led his army to defend the country against the enemies, local people would offer them dingsheng cakes when they returned. The Chinese characters “定胜” on the rice cakes mean “must win” in English, and people also sent them to soldiers to wish them a victorious return.
Today, the cake is a symbol of good luck. People give it to students before exams or to older people on birthdays.
We Are What We Eat
These are the stories behind some of China’s best-known foods. These dishes not only offer delicious tastes, but also carry centuries of cultural traditions. They show the deep relationship between Chinese people and their food. The deeper you look into China’s food culture, the more amazing stories you will uncover.
For Chinese people, food is not only for eating—it also keeps our hopes and dreams alive.
38. Read the passage and complete the food card with information from the text.
